— THE STORY — The action takes place in Sweden at the turn of the last century. The lawyer Fredrik Egerman is having a mid-life crisis as his 18-year-old trophy wife maintains her virginity after a year of marriage. At the same time, Fredrik’s son, the melancholy young theology student Henrik, has fallen in love with his own step-mother, who is one year his junior. Meanwhile, Desireé Armfeldt, a highly successful but world-weary stage actress of beauty and talent is involved with the brutish, buffoonish and utterly self-absorbed Count Carl Magnus, the husband of the cynical, frustrated, and wry Countess Charlotte. When Desireé notices her former lover Fredrik in the audience of her most recent touring production, her interest in him is immediately rekindled. All parties meet for a “Weekend in the Country” at the estate of Desireé’s mother, Madame Armfeldt, a wealthy and very sardonic former courtesan. There, with everyone in one place, over the course of the evening the beautiful Midsummer Night smiles on everyone in the little comedy: the naïve young, the fools in their mid-life, and the old who have gained wisdom. The tangled web of romantic involvements, mistakes and missteps resolves itself in a rapid progression of comedic twists and turns. In this growth from innocence through foolishness to wisdom, each character learns that ultimately, despite all its frustrations, only love matters. —Rick Williams

— STAGE DIREC TOR'S NOTES — Why A Little Night Music? This is a question I’ve heard frequently in the past year. I would compare the overall experience of A Little Night Music to that of a Mozart opera or a Shakespeare play; it is a beautiful, profound, and sometimes painful commentary on the human condition, but it is also enormously funny and saturated with wisdom. Here are deliciously flawed and human characters, perplexed by love and desire. They are trying, as the character Désirée Armfeldt puts it, “to seek a coherent life” to replace the “muddle” that confuses and torments them. Few composers are as unpredictable in their choice of sources. Sondheim’s musicals have been inspired by ancient Roman farce, Grimm’s fairy tales, byways of American history, and even a Seurat painting (Sunday in the Park with George, 1984). So it is no surprise that Sondheim chose Ingmar Bergman’s period romantic comedy film, Smiles of a Summer Night (1955), as inspiration for A Little Night Music. Besides being a polymath and guru of contemporary musical theatre, Sondheim is a lover of puzzles, particularly crosswords, and often challenges himself with musical and linguistic problems. In adapting Smiles of a Summer Night, he found a puzzle in representing elegant, turn-of-the-century Sweden in musical terms. The solution lay in the forms of Viennese operetta and its most notable component: the waltz. The plot deals most felicitously with threes: three smiles of the summer night, three generations of the Armfeldt family, and love triangles. Sondheim’s score boasts a coherent musical structure that is firmly rooted in the Viennese operetta, working within and playing off of this structure throughout. —Dennis M. Lickteig, Stage Director 4

TRIAL BY JURY

March/April 2019 A flirtatious cad, a jilted bride, and a lecherous judge hilariously skewer English law and the human condition in the one act operetta, TRIAL by JURY. We follow this with a Lamplighter original show, TRIAL by JURY DUTY, which follows the same characters AFTER the end of the original show. Happily ever after ... or not so much?

HMS PINAFORE August 2019

The story of a lowly sailor's love for his Captain's daughter, and their brave defiance of her father's demand that she marry the buffoonish but highly born First Lord of the Admiralty. With Sullivan's infectious music, and Gilbert's witty and satirical script and lyrics skewering the entrenched class system of England, a rousing good time is guaranteed for all.
