Lamplighters Music Theatre is extraordinarily grateful to all its donors. You are truly the oil in the lamp that keeps The Lamplighters shining brightly. Every gift makes a difference. Thank you!
We sincerely regret any omissions or errors. Please contact Argo Thompson, Development Director at (415) 227-4797 or athompson@lamplighters.org if you wish to have a listing corrected or clarified.
If You Want To Know Who We Are:
The primary mission of Lamplighters Music Theatre is to present high quality and distinctive productions of classic music theatre, especially the works of Gilbert & Sullivan, for a diverse audience of people of all ages, and to promote understanding and appreciation for a repertoire that occupies the middle ground between popular theatre and classical music and grand opera.
As part of our mission, we endeavor to create a theatre company that:
❖ Showcases the talents of San Francisco Bay Area performers, directors, designers and theatre artisans, assisting in the advancement of professional careers.
❖ Provides performance and training opportunities in the unique style of classic music theatre for professional singers and actors as well as emerging artists and young performers.
❖ Promotes access to and appreciation for Gilbert & Sullivan through youth training programs, school programs and other forms of educational and community outreach.
Founded in 1952, The Lamplighters are recognized as one of the top Gilbert & Sullivan companies in the world. Our repertoire includes all the surviving works of these creative geniuses, as well as a select group of comic operas and classic musicals of equivalent musical and literary quality, such as My Fair Lady, The Merry Widow, and Candide.
Critically acclaimed artistic successes for The Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category. The hallmarks of a Lamplighters production are lavish costumes and sets, live orchestra, excellent comic acting, and gorgeous unamplified singing that showcases the beauty and purity of the human voice.

A 20-year-old treaty states that Princess Ida and Prince Hilarion are to marry when they come of age. That time has come, but Ida refuses to honor a commitment made on her behalf when she was an infant, and has gone off to the country to start a women’s university. There she teaches an interesting variation on Darwin’s theory: that man -- not woman, just man -- is descended from apes, and is thus inferior to woman. The Prince, on the other hand, is an unabashed romantic, and decides to woo Ida and win her love. He and two friends make their way to the university, where they disguise themselves as women in order to enroll and get close to her…
When you’re in love you just want to share the joy so Alexis hires a sorcerer to spike the punch at his engagement party with a love potion. It doesn’t work out so well … except for those of us who love Gilbert’s humor and Sullivan’s melodies! This jewel box production brings the wonderful Lamplighters Orchestra onstage and showcases Melissa Wortman’s gorgeous costumes.
