The Lamplighters' The Lamplighters / Opera West Foundation is a community theatre providing training and performing experience in the art of light opera. We •
promote the tradition of classic English musical comedy with particular emphasis on the works of Gilbert and Sullivan
•
provide training in all aspects of musical and theatrical experience, for both performers and technical personnel
•
provide a showcase for talented performers, directors, designers, musicians, writers, and technicians, leading to the advancement of professional careers
•
provide broadly based musical and theatrical opportunities for both amateurs and young professionals
•
present fully staged productions with full orchestra at affordable prices for audiences of all ages.
The Lamplighters specializes in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan : however, we also regularly present light operas and musicals from European and American repertoires. We also produce an original piece known as The Gala, which is written and produced by the company each year. The Lamplighters first opened in San Francisco in 1952 in a 50 seat house and has been playing continuously in the city ever since. The company began as an all-volunteer effort everyone building sets, making costumes, running lights, and performing to the accompaniment of two pianos. Over forty years and two thousand performances later. The Lamplighters are proud to still be San Francisco's only year round, community based musical theatre company. There is a great deal of crossover talent among the technical crew, stage performers, and trustees as well as staff. We are also delighted that we have second and third generation Lamplighters all working together for the sheer fun of producing these classics of musical comedy. Over the past 42 years we have evolved into one of San Francisco's foremost community theatres. We have made some changes along the way : we have a 21 piece professional orchestra, professional management, and professional design heads.
Introducing our Adjudicator David Turner was almost bom in the theatre. His father was a professional Stage Manager and his mother ran theatrical "digs". As a result he grew up in the world of touring ballet companies, variety acts, classical plays and musical revivals. He studied for the theatre with Elsye Bicheno and made his first stage "appearance" as the back end of Connie the Cow in pantomime, but soon graduated to leading roles, playing such diverse characters as Gratiano in the "Merchant of Venice", Mortimer Brewster in "Arsenic and Old Lace", and Phillip in Rattigan's "The Deep Blue Sea". He has directed major productions in all parts of the British Isles working in many large important theatres and has over two hundred productions to his credit. David is Britain's most experienced adjudicator in Musical Theatre. We are delighted at his retum to Buxton this year. Certainly his "critiques" last year endeared him to our audiences and identified him very clearly as a sensitive and knowledgable man of the theatre. He has also adjudicated at the Intemational Festival of Light Opera in Waterford on four separate occasions in 1978, 1981, 1983 and 1988, and at the Northem Ireland Festival of Light Opera in 1986 and 1987, as well as adjudicating at the Welsh Intemational Festival of Musical Theatre in Newport in 1990, 1991, and 1992. When author Harold Purcell rewrote his famous wartime musical success "The Lisbon Story" he offered David the opportunity to direct the first production. In 1980, in celebration of the centenary of its first performance, David directed a production of "The Pirates of Penzance" in Penzance with a cast made up entirely of Comish players. Also in 1980 he was appointed to the Connaught Theatre, Worthing where during his six years as Director of this famous repertory theatre he produced and directed over seventy major productions including "The Taming of the Shrew" with Nyree Dawn Porter, "South Sea Bubble" with Barbara Murray, "A Song at Twilight" with Michael Denison and Dulcie Gray and "Gypsy" with Dora Bryan. As a result of a visit to New York, David secured the performing rights of Emest Thompson's plays and subsequently presented European premieres of "On Golden Pond" starring Eleanor Summerfield and Paul Maxwell and the "West Side Waltz" with Faith Brook. David directed a number of highly successful musicals at the Connaught Theatre, in particular "The Sound of Music" starring Isla St Clair and Edmund Hockridge, "The King and I " starring Mary Wynter and Loma Dallas, and "Perchance to Dream" starring Patrick Mower. In 1985 for the Connaught's Golden Jubilee, David directed a special presentation of "Dear Octopus" with an all star cast led by Dame Anna Neagle, Dora Bryan, Margaretta Scott and Lockwood West. David directed the premiere of William Douglas Home's new controversial play "And as for Jonathan" and received national critical acclaim. In 1987, Sir Peter Saunders invited David to direct a new production of the world's longest running play "The Mousetrap" at London's St Martin's Theatre and the following year appointed him General Manager of the Peter Saunders organisation, a position he still holds. David has directed "The Mousetrap" on two further occasions. David's work with students and amateurs has been exceptional and at least twenty young actors are now in the professional theatre as a result of his efforts. He holds the NOD A Silver Medal for his voluntary work in this field. Despite his professional commitments he is occasionally able to direct for an amateur company. David is a member of the Society of London Theatre, serves on the Steering Committee of the Arts and Entertainment Technical Training Initiative and the Directors Training Council. He is Vice President of the Waterford Intemational Festival of Musical Theatre, President of the Masque Theatre Company in Sussex, President of the Stage Fright Theatre Company in Ireland and a life member of the York Operatic Society.
The Festival Musical Director The Festival is fortunate to have secured the services of JAMES NEWBY once again as its Musical Director. He is a formidable musician and a Musical Director renowned across the North of England. Jim's early years revealed a performer both as a vocalist and accomplished pianist. Later work added expertise in percussion and study with Brian Priestman in conducting and composition. A breadth of experience was enjoyed with choirs, orchestras and dramatic and operatic companies ranging from jazz to opera. He has directed over 500 performances as a theatre conductor and has been the winner of the "Best Musical Director" award at festivals in Wales and Ireland. An accompanist, teacher, consultant, composer and arranger, he has written an opera and arranged many commissioned orchestrations and currently supplies these to the music world. He has directed Pendle Opera for several years including. La Boheme, Macbeth, Martha, Magic Flute and La Traviata. Jim has been the conductor of the West Yorkshire Orchestra for many years and has been musical director of the Savoyards Appreciation Society since their formation 20 years ago. Another facet of Jim's musical ability is that of orchestration. Many of the Festival Productions feature his orchestrations, including the Festival show which he will conduct, and "The Sorcerer".
