The Story group of contadine (peasant girls) are waiting for two of the most popular and charming gondoliers, singing sensations Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri, who are coming to the piazzetta in Venice to choose their brides. By a sort of blindman's bluff, the two brothers choose Tessa and Gianecca, after which the whole company happily dances off to the double wedding. The Duke and Duchess of PlazaToro arrive from Spain, weary and rather seasick, with their daughter Casilda and their servant Luiz. The Duke reveals to Casilda the purpose of their visit to Venice: when she was a baby, Casilda was married by proxy to the infant son and heir of the king of Barataria, whose recent death now calls for the succession of his son. They have come to Venice at the instruction of Don Alhambra, the shadowy power behind the throne of Spain, who has cold them that they will find Casilda's husband here. Due to political complications, Don Alhambra had stolen the

infant prince and sent him off to Venice to be raised by an old gondolier as his own son . Unfortunately , the old gondolier had a taste for grappa and never could quite tell which was his own son and which the prince in hiding, and the old man died without ever making it clear which was which. The brother s are, of course, Marco and Giuseppe Palmieri. In order to make a positive ID , Don Alhambra has sent for Inez (Luiz' mother), who nursed the infants. Marco and Giuseppe return to the piazzetta with their new brides Gianetta and Tessa. Don Alhambra tells them that one of them is the King of Barataria. Appalled to realize that one of the gondoliers is a bigamist , Don Alhambra decrees that the cwo kings must depart for Barataria at once, there to reign jointly until Inez arrives to clear up the confusion, and that no women will be permitted at the Baratarian court umil the question of identity is resolved. With some reluctance, Marco and Giuseppe overcome
their republican scruples and set off for Barataria, with all their gondolier friends coming along. The second act opens three months later, at the royal court of Barataria, where the brothers Palmieri are conducting an experiment in a sort of socialist monarchy. While it's fun to be kings, they miss their wives. Back in Venice, the women have taken matters into their own hands , chartered a boat , and now they arrive in Barataria, much to the delight of the men. Don Alhambra is not pleased with this turn of events and whisks the recently-arrived Inez off for interrogation to jog her memo ry. He is forced co tell the cwo couples that neither Tessa nor Gianecta will be queen, and that in face one of chem is not married at all. This, understandably, causes a spat. The Duke and Duchess arrive with Casilda. Casilda is no more eager to marry Marco or Giuseppe than they are to marry her. Inez, post-interrogation, finally sets the record straight, and all ends happily.
Director's Note bout eight or nine years ago, and I were legal secretaries together at a big downtown firm . We would often trade emails on matters Gilbertian and theatrical, and we once had fun casting an updated version of The Merry Widowwith film stars of the 60s. For me, this decade has always had associations of frivolity and idealism; as a girl growing up in a small town in Maine I was relatively unaffected by the more serious political
A Barbara Heroux
issues of the time. I was dying to be a Mouseketeer, and although I lived on Maine 's coast, the California beaches where Frankie & Annette hung out seemed a different sort of world altogether from the slate-sanded beach just minutes from my front door. I got the idea to re-set The Gondoliers about four years ago, when it again became a candidate for the Lamplighter season. The Venetian guys and girls with their "dolce far niente" and
"live-for-now" philosophy seemed to me another version of the Beach Parry gang, while the Spaniards evoked the world-weariness of Federico Fellini films. Add to this the instantly recognizable style of the late 50s to mid 60s, and the combination was, I thought, a potent one. The point? As Gilbert says in "Try We Lifelong," "Life's a pleasant institution, Let us rake it as it comes." We hope you find "too much happiness" in our endeavors!
