Our Spring Party and Fundraiser
Gilbert & Sullivan’s subversive political satire on how a government SHOULD be run. Featuring a shepherdess the lords all want to marry, her beloved who is half man, half fairy, the tour de force “Nightmare Song,” and a band of feisty fairies doing battle with a dim-witted Parliament. Lamplighter principals will perform the work in its entirety, bringing the orchestra on stage to join the party. Sing along with any and all parts. Costumes are encouraged!

The Story Twenty years before our story begins, the Duke and Duchess of PlazaToro arranged for their baby daughter Casilda to be married to the infant heir to the throne of Barataria. Shortly thereafter, the baby bridegroom disappeared, abducted for reasons of political safety, and was taken to Venice by the Grand Inquisitor, Don Alhambra del Bolero, where he was brought up incognito as the son of a gondolier. As the result of an insurrection, the throne of Barataria is now vacant, and the Duke and Duchess are coming to Venice to meet with Don Alhambra, find the disguised King of Barataria, and install their daughter as Queen. As the curtain rises, a group of contadine (peasant girls) are waiting for the two most eligible gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, to come and choose their brides from among them. By a sort of blind man’s buff, the two men choose Tessa and Gianetta, all the other gondoliers pair up with all the other contadine, and they dance off happily to the altar. The Duke of Plaza-Toro and entourage arrive in Venice, bedraggled after a laborious voyage. The Duke tells Casilda about her childhood marriage and she sadly renounces Luiz (her father’s servant, with whom she is secretly in love). Don Alhambra arrives and reveals a complication: the disguised King of Barataria is either Marco or Giuseppe, but he is not sure which. He will send for the nurse who took care of the infant prince (she lives far away, in the mountains); when she arrives, she will be able to tell them which one it is. Meanwhile, Giuseppe and Marco are to go to Barataria at once and rule jointly until the matter is straightened out. The two gondoliers are overjoyed at the prospect, regretting only the mysterious requirement that they leave their new wives behind (the marriage to Casilda has not been mentioned to them). Vowing to reign according to principles of absolute equality, they leave for Barataria, taking all of their friends with them as political appointees. Act II is set in Barataria, where Marco and Giuseppe’s new government is a model of democracy: all departments rank equally, and everybody is at the head of his department. Everything is going well, except that they miss Gianetta and Tessa. Suddenly the women arrive, impatient with waiting behind in Venice. General happiness now reigns, and they dance a cachucha. The arrival of Tessa and Gianetta forces Don Alhambra’s hand, and he tells Marco and Giuseppe that one of them - whichever is the King of Barataria - is already married to Casilda. This revelation is a heavy blow to Tessa and Gianetta. Not only will neither of them become queen, but one of them is actually not married at all. The Duke and Duchess arrive with Casilda. They are now splendidly dressed, as the Duke has raised money by incorporating himself and selling shares. Unimpressed with the two gondoliers, the Duke attempts to teach them etiquette. Casilda misses Luiz and can’t imagine marrying either of the two gondoliers. The Duchess reassures her daughter that a strong-willed woman can turn even the most unpromising material into an acceptable husband. At length the nurse, Inez, arrives and discloses the truth...

Glossary
With thanks to The Gilbert & Sullivan Lexicon by Harry Benford, here’s a little help with some of the more obscure Victorian references you’ll hear in The Gondoliers. Mr. Benford’s lexicon is on sale at the Lamplighters store in the lobby along with other fun stuff. Barataria: An imaginary island kingdom, whose name comes from Cervantes’s Don Quixote, and which derives from the Spanish “barato” (cheap).
Limited company: Equivalent to a US corporation in that shareholders can’t lose more than their investments if the enterprise fails.
Semi-state: Attire suitable for ordinary ceremonial occasions, but skipping the crowns and ermine capes.
O, ciel!: O, heaven!
Servitori umilissimi: We are your most humble servants.
Colors nailed unto the mast: Refusing to surrender; can’t lower the flag.
Paladin: A chivalrous knight.
Contadine: Country girls, peasant girls.
Per chi questi fiori bellissimi?: For whom are these beautiful flowers?
Shalloo humps! and Shallow hoops!: Probably a transcription of a drill sergeant’s barked orders, such as “Shoulder arms!”
Per voi, bei signori, O eccellentissimi!: For you, you handsome and charming men!
Shovel hats: clerical hats with broad brims sticking out like shovels.
Peruke: A periwig; a fashionable tailored wig.
Small beer: Trivial or petty; small potatoes.
Contradicente: Contradicting. Coutts: London bank dating from the 17th century; bankers to the royal family. Dolce far niente: Sweet idleness. The Ducal Palace: The ancient residence and office of the Doge, the chief magistrate of the Venetian Republic. Duke of Plaza-Toro, Count Matadoro, Baron Picadoro: Note that all of the duke’s titles have something to do with bull. Dunder-headed: Foolish. Fancy: The personification of whimsical thought. Floated at a premium: The shares of stock in the company are commanding more than the nominal price on the stock market. Gondolieri, carissimi! Siamo contadine!: Dearest gondoliers, we are only peasant girls! Grand Inquisitor: The presiding officer in a court of inquisition, the purpose of which was to root out disbelief and heresy within the population, assuming a person guilty until proven innocent. Grandee: A nobleman of the highest rank. Halberdiers: Guardsmen armed with halberds (combination spears/axes). Having passed the Rubicon: Having gone too far to turn back.
Preme, stali!: Shouts of communication between gondoliers; used somewhat like turn signals on cars. Quarterings: The number of families included in one’s coat of arms.
With ninetyfive quarterings, you would need a magnifying glass to appreciate the full extent of the Duke’s family connections. Rhenish: From the vineyards of the Rhine. Scramble money: A scattering of coins on the sidewalk, usually resulting in a mad competition to gather them.
Soupçon: French for ‘suspicion’. Stipulated for a trifle on account: wanted a down payment. Stripling: A boy on the verge of manhood. Titivating: Putting all the finishing touches on one’s personal appearance. Vagary: A caprice. Vespers: Church bells announcing evening service of a Roman Catholic church. Weary lagooning: Short for “weary of propelling our gondolas on the lagoon”.

The Lamplighters Orchestra
If you want to know who we are... The mission of Lamplighters Music Theatre is to share our enthusiasm and love for the works of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan through productions of their comic operas and of other works of comparable wit, literacy and musical merit. Our company strives to enrich the lives of current and future theatre-goers with productions of the highest artistic quality, and to offer performance opportunities in the unique style of classic music theatre to established and emerging artists alike. Through youth training, programs in schools and community outreach, the Lamplighters aspire to develop young talent and encourage people of all ages to explore the comic appeal and deep musical rewards of this repertoire. Critically acclaimed artistic successes for the Lamplighters include honors for Best Production and Best Director at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival in Buxton, England, and local awards in nearly every performance, direction, and design category. The hallmarks of a Lamplighters production are lavish costumes and sets, live orchestra, excellent comic acting, and gorgeous unamplified singing that showcases the beauty and purity of the human voice.
