The Story
On a fine morning in the village of Rederring, early in the 19th Century, the town’s corps of professional bridesmaids bemoan the fact that Rose Maybud, the prettiest girl in the village, is so prim and proper that all the young men are afraid to court her. Until she gets married, it seems that no one else will, and the bridesmaids will remain both idle and single. They try to convince Dame Hannah to marry, but Hannah explains that as a young woman she had had her heart broken when she learned that her betrothed was none other than Sir Roderic Murgatroyd, Baronet of Ruddygore. Hannah tells the breathless girls of the Witch’s Curse on the House of Ruddygore. Centuries ago, the first Baronet, Sir Rupert, had condemned a witch to death. As she was burning at the stake, she called down a curse on Sir Rupert and all his descendants: Each Lord of Ruddygore must commit a crime every day of his life. If he fails to do so, he perishes that very day, in “inconceivable agony.” Of course no self-respecting young lady could marry a man with such a curse on his head, and so Hannah left Roderic and never saw him again. Roderic died ten years later; his nephew, Sir Despard Murgatroyd, inherited the title Baronet of Ruddygore -- and the curse. A prosperous young farmer, Robin Oakapple, is in love with Rose but between his shyness and her extreme propriety the courting isn’t going very well. Robin’s faithful servant, Old Adam, sees that they are alone and calls Robin by his rightful title: Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd. Robin is the rightful Baronet of Ruddygore but fled his home at an early age to avoid the curse and is living under an assumed name. Old Adam tells Robin that his foster-brother, Richard Dauntless, has arrived home after ten long years at sea. Robin tells Richard (or Dick) of his love for Rose. Dick offers to woo her for Robin, who happily accepts. But when Dick sees Rose, all thoughts of speaking on Robin’s behalf evaporate, and soon Dick has proposed to Rose himself, bringing great joy to the bridesmaids and great grief to poor Robin. When Rose learns that Dick was supposed to be speaking on Robin’s behalf, she manages to let Robin know that she really prefers him, and happily leaves Dick for Robin. Mad Margaret, “a caricature of theatrical madness,” arrives on the scene. She is convinced that Sir Despard (formerly Margaret’s beloved) is in love with Rose, and Margaret is prepared to take drastic action to keep them apart. Rose attempts to convince Margaret that it is Robin whom she will soon be marrying. Meanwhile, Sir Despard arrives to commit today’s crime: “Carry off Rose Maybud.” He is interrupted by Dick, who, upset that Robin has won Rose, spills the secret that Robin is really Despard’s older brother, and should by rights be the current Baronet. If Robin has to become the Bad Baronet, Dick reasons, then Rose will turn to him. Dick and Despard agree to work together to foil the wedding and force Robin to face his responsibilities. The whole town gathers for Rose and Robin’s wedding. Dramatically, Sir Despard interrupts and identifies Robin as the Bad Baronet of Ruddygore. As predicted, Rose throws Robin over and as the act ends, Despard is reunited with Margaret, and Rose with Dick, as Robin, in despair, returns to Ruddygore Castle to take on the mantle of the Witch’s Curse. The second act finds Robin miserably trying to fulfil the duties of a Bad Baronet. Led by Sir Roderic (Robin and Despard’s uncle, and Hannah’s former beloved), portraits of the past baronets come to life and accuse Robin of evading the terms of the Curse. After a sample of the “inconceivable agonies” which await him, Robin reluctantly agrees to commit a crime that lives up to his ancestors’ standards: he will carry off a maiden. He sends Old Adam off to town to bring him a maiden -- any maiden! Despard and Margaret arrive, reformed and repentant, and seeking to convince Robin to cease his wicked ways and do good. Robin declares that he will repent. Before he can do so, Old Adam arrives with the abducted maiden -- Dame Hannah! She turns out to be so capable of self-defense that Robin cries out to the portrait of Sir Roderic for aid. When Roderic sees that it is Hannah who has been abducted, he is most displeased and sends Robin away. Hannah touchingly tells Roderic that she never stopped loving him, despite his crimes. Robin re-enters, thrilled to have hit upon a solution to all of their problems. He points out that, as refusal to commit a crime is tantamount to suicide, and suicide is itself a crime, the Witch’s Curse is inoperative! So a “practically alive” Roderic reunites with Hannah, Robin is free to marry Rose, Dick moves on to the head bridesmaid, and all ends in general rejoicing.

HANNAH VELICHKO (’11) Ruth. As a little girl, Hannah always loved singing, but it wasn’t until she saw kids like herself onstage that she discovered her inspiration to perform. Since then, she has explored the art of stagecraft through dozens of shows from a myriad of onstage and offstage perspectives, including vocal performance, stage acting, tap dance, ballet, scenic painting, lighting and costume design. She joined Lamplighters in 2011 and has since performed with them in over 10 productions. LAYLA WILKINSON WALLERSTEIN (Debut) Chorus. Layla, 11, has always loved musical theater, and has been in various classes and programs including Lamplighter’s Gilbert and Sullivan Scenes summer camp for the last two years, and the children’s chorus at the SF Community Music Center for the past four. This is her first professional production. RICK WILLIAMS (’78) Artistic Director/ Old Adam. Rick has performed every G&S patter role with the Lamplighters, often multiple times.
