BACH Art of Fugue, nos 1 & 6 MENDELSSOHN Fugue from Four Pieces, Op. 81 BEETHOVEN Grosse Fuge Op.133 The Brodsky Quartet have earned a place in British music history for their ceaseless commitment to reinventing classics and innovation through new music. This programme brings a selection of powerful music in sharp focus, culminating in Beethoven’s explosive ‘Great Fugue’.

J.S.BACH B Minor Mass

Autumn Highlights

Bach’s Mass in B minor is one of the great statements of faith in music: a mighty response to life’s terrible silences. The Mass is given an impressive refresh and English Touring Opera’s soloists are joined by local choirs in this unique production. This concert will be held at Lancaster Priory.

Impermanent Durations: On Painting & Time

Beth Harland (UK) | Laura Lisbon (US) | David Thomas (AU) | Ian Woo (SG) An experimental exhibition and collaborative project by four contemporary painters. The artists will work together in the gallery, responding to the space and reacting to each other using painting and photography to create an immersive installation.

20 November – 15 December

Sketch 2017 Featuring 100 artists, SKETCH captures the diversity and importance of drawing and the role of the sketchbook in creative work. The sketchbook is a place for impossible experiments alongside the ordinary and the observed. This selection of artists’ sketchbooks can be seen as a journey through the most intimate studio space of the artist.

Lancaster Arts is Lancaster University’s award-winning arts organisation. We champion cultural and artistic performance and participation at the highest level through a programme of internationally renowned contemporary theatre, circus, dance, visual art and classical music and have an long legacy in supporting emerging and established artists.

We offer Arts Award Support in a variety of different ways in our capacity as a Theatre, Concert Hall, Gallery and Museum. We aim to support young people build their confidence, experiment with new mediums and develop their creativity independently as part of the Arts Award. imitating the dog: Nocturnes Nocturnes is a multi-media twist on a 50s spy thriller set during the height of the cold war. Performed on what appears to be a film soundstage, two actors voice a film they can’t see and never acknowledge. But who is in control? And as the film gathers pace, can the past be changed by present-day actions? Nocturnes asks important questions about truth and free will and about how we understand what’s real in this post-truth era. Post Show Discussion on 17 October 80mins. 14yrs+ imitating the dog are offering three schools a FREE THEATRE WORKSHOP for years 10-12 wishing to bring a group of 15+ students to the performance (led by artistic director of the company, Professor Andrew Quick). Gob Squad is a collective of UK and German artists who have been devising, directing and performing together since 1994, exploring where theatre meets art, media and real life.

Anjali Dance: Genius

Joli Vyann: Imbalance

Six dancers perform two dramatic explorations of genius in an inspirational performance full of eminent talent and creative power.

Combining exciting acrobatic skills and athletic dance, this energetic, thought-provoking performance explores our obsessive dependence with technology, asking whether our lives are ‘in’ or ‘out’ of balance?

8pm, 14 November WE ARE GOB SQUAD & SO ARE YOU This performance-lecture explores the company’s methods and motivations lifting the lid on Gob Squad’s participatory performances – where the boundaries between audience and performers often disappear completely. 60mins. 14yrs+ 8pm, 16 November WAR & PEACE A new live video performance and a collective surf through the pages of a huge novel, dealing with a universal subject. Gob Squad blur history with the present to try to get to grips with the topic of conflict, big and small. 105mins. 14yrs+ Post Show Discussion

Gary Clarke’s Beethoven takes a touching and darkly humorous look at the extraordinary personal life and musical works of Ludwig van Beethoven. Lea Anderson has created a stylized and gently humorous exploration of the legend of the vampire Nosferatu and his depiction in film. 80mins (inc. interval). 8yrs+

It’s rare nowadays not to ‘log in’ at every opportunitythe breakfast table, nights out with friends, even in bed! When and how do we separate ourselves from the virtual chaos surrounding us? 60mins. 8yrs+ Post Show Discussion
