Our Saturday-morning workshops are specially designed to support our smallest visitors in their creative exploration and expression. Lead by artists, these hands-on sessions offer something for curious and creative minds – of all ages! – to enjoy. For families with children aged 0-5 years.

Welcome Art blows a breath of fresh air through our changing world, helping us all to connect and understand it and ourselves better. Whether that's through artists making sense of our world and role within it, work in progress by an emerging theatre maker, experiencing fresh new choreography or a classic piece of Bach, at Lancaster Arts we proudly support highly skilled artists to develop work for our audiences to enjoy and take part in. This season our gallery features work by Rebecca Chesney, an artist dealing with perceptions of climate change, land and environmental issues. This has a poignant resonance in the wake of the U.S. election where Chesney is currently undertaking a residency. In the main gallery, we present the work of Andy Holden, whose films sit at the centre of an exhibition that rewrites physics using laws found in the world of cartoons. Children under 5 can take part in art at our Messy Noisy Gallery, which features professional artist-led workshops with the musicians of the Northern Chamber Orchestra and Kabantu. There’s more for children in the Nuffield Theatre when the cheeky mischievous Beasty Baby comes to Lancaster in this magical wintry tale. There’s live art, dance, comedy and theatre showcases to enjoy in our beloved black box theatre. Highlights include the exhilarating new dance programme by Verve, Unfolding Theatre’s epic band reunion, and the hilarious physical comedy of the Police Cops. In our classical series we’re thrilled to welcome the remarkable violinist, Nicola Benedetti and her friends for a special intimate chamber music recital. We also present the captivating Japanese pianist, Noriko Ogawa and Italian virtuoso violinist, Francesca Dego, closing with a visit from the luminous Choir of Clare College Cambridge University. At Lancaster Arts we also have change in the air with our new Director, Jocelyn Cunningham who comes from an extensive theatre, film and TV background and who you will hear more from in the coming months. This spring we hope you will join us for some of these memorable performances and a warm welcome from us all awaits you at Lancaster University. Fiona Sinclair Associate Director

Rebecca Chesney: 66 Million 26 January – 17 March Peter Scott Gallery Join the artist at the opening event 6–7.30pm, 25 January Shot in October 2016, one month before the presidential election, 66 Million presents California as it enters its sixth year of drought. Sites in Yosemite National Park and the agricultural Central Valley show the differing impact of the drought on natural and man-made environments - in a time of scarcity, 66 Million questions our priorities.

Andy Holden: As Speed Increases Objects Can Be In Several Places At Once When Chesney returns to Saratoga in Spring 2017, America will be two months into President Donald Trump’s term in office. The President-elect stated during his campaign that he would withdraw America from the Paris Agreement and cut federal climate spending, though in the period since the election this stance has changed. California’s drought and the devastating impact it continues to have is now set against a backdrop of accelerating political uncertainty. Chesney is keen to see what has changed when she returns. 66 Million introduces the new work and research being developed through Chesney’s three-month residency at Montalvo Arts Center (Saratoga, USA).

26 January – 17 March Peter Scott Gallery Join the artist at the opening event 6–7.30pm, 25 January The result of five years' work, Andy Holden’s Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape presents a fully realised animated theory proposing the world is now best understood as a cartoon.

Part-lecture, part-documentary, part-conspiracy theory, the film examines the formation of ‘laws’ within cartoons as a way of making sense of the world we live in. The artist’s avatar invites the viewer to experience a world where laws such as ‘Everything falls faster than an anvil’ are given the same critical attention as philosophy, physics and politics. Laws of Motion in a Cartoon Landscape is an hour long exploration of the world after the end of history: an irrational space where anything can happen, yet certain things reoccur. The film will be installed alongside a wider body of work connecting to this long-term project, including new films, prints and drawings.

An Evening of Chamber Music with Nicola Benedetti Benedetti Elschenbroich Grynyuk Trio

6

7.30pm, Saturday 28 January Great Hall. Price D – p14.

Ravel’s only piano trio is a bittersweet vision of rapturous poetry, written in the depths of the Great War, while Brahms’s B major Trio is the grandest of romantic outpourings by a young composer hopelessly in love.

RAVEL Trio in A minor TURNAGE Duo for Cello and Violin SIERRA Piano Trio Butterflies Remember a Mountain BRAHMS Piano Trio No.1 in B major, Op.8

In between, they play a new mini masterpiece by Arlene Sierra, and the virtuosic Duo created for them by Mark Anthony Turnage – bringing a personal touch to a very special evening of music-making.

Despite a glittering solo career which has earned her a worldwide reputation, Nicola Benedetti’s private passion is for chamber music. In her piano trio she teams up with her partner Leonard Elschenbroich and the masterly young Ukrainian pianist Sasha Grynyuk for a whole evening of musical magic between friends.

6.45pm Foyer Music Due to unforeseen circumstances, Sir Willard White has unfortunately had to withdraw from the previously advertised event.

Francesca Dego (Violin) Chetham's Chamber & Francesca Leonardi Orchestra (Piano) 7.30pm, Thursday 9 February Great Hall. Price D – p14.

7.30pm, Thursday 16 February Great Hall. Price D – p14.

BEETHOVEN Violin Sonata No.9 Kreutzer RESPIGHI Sonata in B minor CASTELNUOVO-TEDESCO Figaro

Stephen Threlfall (Conductor) Margaret McDonald (Alto) Lia Tang (Violin) Gentlemen of the Manchester Chamber Choir

For the virtuoso Italian duo, Francesca Dego and Francesca Leonardi, performing Beethoven has always been central to their musical partnership. This Italian themed recital is inspired by the fast and flirtatious southern Italian folk dance which ends Beethoven’s famous Kreutzer Sonata. The other two works offer contrasting viewpoints - Respighi represents a romanticised and idealistic patriotism while Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s Figaro is a lighthearted and tongue-in-cheek paraphrase of the Largo al factotum from Rossini’s Barber of Seville.

The awe-inspiring concerts of Chetham’s music school are always a joyful occasion at Lancaster and their Chamber Orchestra brings together their finest senior pupils. Star student, Lia Tang will perform Prokofiev’s 1st Violin Concerto as a centerpiece to this colourful, sonorous and emotional programme.

Unfolding Theatre with LittleMighty: Putting The Band Back Together

The Best of Both Worlds: A Busker's Opera

8pm, Wednesday 8 February Nuffield Theatre. Price A – p14.

8pm, Tuesday 21 February Nuffield Theatre. Price A – p14.

Across the UK there are thousands of guitars propped up in bedrooms that haven’t been strummed in years. Voices only heard in the shower. Drum kits taking up too much space in garages. Well, it’s time to blow off the dust. We’re putting the band back together! Part riotous gig, part tender storytelling, Ross Millard (The Futureheads), Maria Crocker and Alex Elliott reveal the epic emotions within people’s relationships with music. Every show features a house band of ex-players. Fancy joining? Email band@unfoldingtheatre.co.uk 10

60mins.

Matthews & Burtin are funded escapees. She from the cutthroat, self-made, individualist American dream. He from lukewarm, protectionist France. By air and by sea, and both to the Best of Both Worlds: the UK. Meeting in the middle, this show is an opportunity to take stock of what we value and how we go about valuing it.

Northern School of Contemporary Dance: Verve

2Magpies Theatre: Ventoux

8pm, Tuesday 28 February Nuffield Theatre. Price A – p14.

8pm, Thursday 2 March Nuffield Theatre. Price A – p14.

Verve presents an exhilarating programme of four distinct dance works choreographed by international artists James Cousins, Carlos Pons Guerra, Leila McMillan and Matthias Sperling.

Ventoux is the most fearsome mountain encountered on the Tour de France.

Performed by a company of eleven dancers trained at some of the world’s leading conservatoires, the work is physically daring and thought provoking.

Expect 1930s French street song and sleazy salesman rhetoric. Part cabaret, part lecture and part participatory experiment, this show is a good old fashioned music hall for the cash-strapped proles and the accidental gentrifiers.

Verve is the postgraduate performance company of Northern School of Contemporary Dance (NSCD). Each year the company commissions leading choreographers to create an exciting new programme of contemporary dance work which tours extensively across the UK and internationally. VERVE is led by Artistic Director Matthew Robinson.

It is also the story of Lance Armstrong and Marco Pantani – whose drug-fuelled race there in 2000 was the greatest cycling had ever seen. Join 2Magpies as they restage the race using breathtaking video accompaniment and a pair of road bikes, asking the question – how far will we go to succeed? 60mins. 12yrs+ 11

Elf Lyons: Pelican

The Pretend Men: Police Cops

8pm, Wednesday 1 February Nuffield Theatre. Price A - p14.

8pm, Friday 3 February Nuffield Theatre. Price A - p14.

Elf Lyons (Feminist Times' One to Watch) sometimes wants to kill her mother. So she’s made a show about it. Do other people feel like this? A recent graduate from L'Ecole Philippe Gaulier, Elf explores the age-old fear of turning into your mother and what it means to have it all…

Following sellout runs at London’s Soho Theatre, The Melbourne International Comedy Festival, The Cape Town Fringe Festival and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2016... Police Cops is back in town.

Elf Lyons is an award-winning, immortal, red-hatted comedian and storyteller from London and a regular performer and M.C on the UK comedy circuit. Elf mixes her vulnerabilities, her niche geeky interests and her sassy nature to create fun, action packed quests for her and the audience, exploring modern political and feminist issues - often resulting in a huge fun mess on stage.

The Pretend Men’s critically acclaimed, multi award-winning comedy blockbuster is an action packed hour of adrenaline fuelled physical comedy, cinematic style and uncompromising facial hair. PRESENT DAY (of 1976). Straight-laced rookie Police Cop Jimmy Johnson is out to avenge his brother’s death, and he’s got to go it alone! (with his partner Harrison). The pair begin digging and soon unearth the soily secrets that the case holds. 60mins. 12yrs+

Foot in the door: A Double Bill of Works In Progress 8pm, Wednesday 22 February Nuffield Theatre. Price B – p14. Returning to the Nuffield are Lancaster Alumni Paper People Theatre who will present an extract of their new work in development: Do Geese See God? This new show tries to find out how we know when a fact is true, out of date, misunderstood or just a lie. In this show, amongst the facts, all quite interesting, is one story of a young fact, personified, and her flight through life as she struggles to remain true. Alongside this sharing by Paper People, a group of emerging artists including Theatre 42 will present entirely new pieces they created as part of a peer-learning programme hosted by Making Room & Lancaster Arts 14yrs+ 12

LICA Theatre Showcase 6pm, Wednesday 22 March Nuffield Theatre. Price B - p14. The LICA final year Theatre shows stand at the pinnacle of the Theatre degree. In previous years they have often served to launch the careers of new emerging theatre companies. The original pieces have been devised over ten weeks with students drawing on the skills and knowledge of contemporary theatre and performance studied throughout their degree. As in previous years, this year’s productions promise to show an astonishing variety of genres, visual aesthetics and performance modes. 14yrs+ Images from last year's showcase.
