20th Anniversary of the Platform 2017 marks a special year in the Platform’s history. It’s 20 years this December since we opened our doors for the first time as a live entertainment venue. Since that day in 1997 we’ve gone from strength to strength building a reputation as Morecambe’s best live entertainment venue. To celebrate our successes over the past 20 years, we will be hosting a special event presented by The Promenade Concert Orchestra. This 20th Anniversary Concert on Sunday 3 December will feature railway themed tunes, alongside seasonal Christmas melodies. Please come along to celebrate this wonderful venue within our community. It has been an absolute pleasure for our team to have run proceedings here for the last few years, and we hope we have been able to preserve the venue’s traditions, and keep the programme lively and of interest to you. Morecambe On Film The Dukes have partnered with the North West Film Archive to present a window to the past, with this collection of professional and amateur footage that explores life in Morecambe over the past 100 years. In association with the North West Film Archive, Vintage by the Sea 2017, The Platform and supported by the British Film Institute and Film Audience Network. Jamie Smith’s Mabon One of the most highly accomplished and critically acclaimed Celtic roots music bands based in Britain today, Jamie Smith’s MABON have built their reputation on their exhilarating live performances and deftly worked recordings. Sex Pi**ed Dolls The Sex Pi**ed Dolls, an all-female rock band, exploded onto the live music scene in 2014 and quickly gained a reputation as a must see live band with a visual and energy that few could match. Initially covering songs by The Clash, The Sex Pistols, Nirvana, etc. in their own unique style, the band also throw a couple of originals into their set list too. The Moonlight Serenade Orchestra with special guest The Andrews Sisters UK Celebrating the timeless music of the swing era, the Moonlight Serenade Orchestra recreates that 1940s feel with a 15 piece big band, vocal harmony trio the Andrews Sisters, plus the smooth vocals of Mr Stuart Garside. Roy Orbison and The Traveling Wilburys Tribute Show Currently on a nationwide tour, this hit production have wowed audiences with their uncanny vocal and musical resemblances to the original band members. Barbara Dickson with Nick Holland Emerging from the Scottish folk scene of the late 1960’s Barbara enjoyed mainstream chart success with hits including the number one single, ‘I Know Him So Well’. Gospel Bayfest Following considerable demand throughout the North West, the Morecambe Bay Festival of Gospel Music will take place at The Platform over three days. The weekend will be hosted by Dana who shot to fame in 1970 with her Eurovision Song Contest winner, “All Kinds of Everything.” Friday 29 September - Sunday 1 October. Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle Iconic artist Jacqui McShee’s crystal clear vocals set the standard for British folk and the band Pentangle was legendary on the folk, jazz, rock scene. The original Pentangle expanded the frontiers of Folk in the 1960’s and 70’s. Since then Jacqui McShee’s Pentangle has progressed the original concept and continues to make groundbreaking music. The Upbeat Beatles As the name suggests The Upbeat Beatles are a rockin’ band with tight musicianship and powerhouse vocals. You’ll be jumping from the word go! Jess Morgan And Dan Whitehouse Two of the UK’s most talked about emerging songwriters tour together in October 2017, featuring sets from both artists as well as collaboration. Shaun Gash: A Journey of Determination - No Fear on Wheels A road traffic accident left Shaun wheelchair bound and completely paralysed from his chest (T5/6) changing his life forever. Geno Washington and The Ram Jam Band Geno originates from Indiana, USA and first came to England in the 1960’s. The Temperance Seven The Temperance Seven were formed in the mid-50s by a group of enthusiastic students at the Royal College of Art in London. They reached number one in 1961 with the George Martin produced “You’re Driving Me Crazy”. Although the line-up may have changed over the years the band still maintains that inimitable style of early jazz which will always be associated with The Temperance Seven. The Magic Band plays the music of Captain Beefheart Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart was a visionary in the field of music. His group, Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band started as a Blues group in the 1960s. “Ella Fitzgerald at 100” with Martin Taylor & Alison Burns 2017 marks a very special year as Ella Fitzgerald will be celebrated around the world with a series of centennial events. Morecambe Band – Remembrance Concert Enjoy this annual performance of traditional brass band music and service of remembrance. Proceeds are donated to the British Legion Poppy Appeal, Burma Star Association and other local ATC and the Army and Navy cadets. Mark Watson After more than 100 dates on the road in 2016 with his best-reviewed show to date, ‘I’m Not Here’, and a similarly marathon effort with the previous tour, Mark Watson is amazed to find there are STILL some areas of the country he’s not visited much, and some towns that have been neglected altogether. Promenade Concert Orchestra – Music for Ballet & Dance Music theatre and ballet have inspired many great orchestral scores over the last three hundred years and the PCO, once again, explores some of this repertoire in a programme containing music by Tchaikovsky, Prokofiev, Ernest Tomlinson, Elgar, Fincke, Fletcher, Delibes, Debussy and Schubert; with a return performance of our own commissioned tango ‘Lucia’s Dance’ by Julian Davies. Roving Crows A vibrant mix of Celtic-inspired fiddle alongside original and intelligent lyrics backed by pounding, tribal and electronica infused dance grooves; the band comprises fiddle, electric and acoustic guitar, electric 5 and 6 string bass, pumping bongo percussion rhythms and vocals. Darkside – The Pink Floyd Show Darkside, the Pink Floyd Show return to take you on a journey through the huge back catalogue of iconic psychedelic and progressive rock music under the show title of Any Colour You Like. Peggy Seeger – “First Time Ever” Tour To coincide with the publication of her memoir and accompanying CD, singer songwriter and feminist icon Peggy Seeger takes to the road. At 82 she’s the undisputed queen of folk and political song with a charisma that shines as brightly as ever. Peggy and family members perform her and Ewan MacColl’s most treasured songs from a career spanning over 60 years interspersed with readings from her memoir and plenty of whip-smart banter. Platform 20th Anniversary Concert Promenade Concert Orchestra In 1907, the Promenade Station opened to bring thousands of holiday-makers to Morecambe. In 1997 it re-opened as the Platform - a venue for entertainment in the community run by Lancaster City Council. The PCO’s Palm Court Orchestra and LCC present a 20th anniversary concert of railway themed songs and sparkling seasonal melodies. Featuring vocal ensemble Octameron and jazz singer, Val Baulard. Buddy Holly & The Cricketers – Holly at Christmas Buddy Holly and the Cricketers once again herald in the Yuletide festivities with Holly at Christmas, the show that is now as traditional as mulled wine and mince pies! Holly’s hits, other contemporary classics and some Christmas crackers are all wrapped up in a fast, furious and funny feast of entertainment to make the perfect gift for all the family. The Dylan Project Take four of Britain’s most talented folk-rock musicians and a unique singer, add the repertoire of a genius, and you’ve got the recipe for a dream band. Their set spans the whole of Bob Dylan’s oeuvre with new material frequently brought in. The Merseybeats’ Christmas Show Legendary 60s Liverpool band The Merseybeats return with support from Golly’s Rock-Ola and Reelin & Rockin. Fairport Convention & Winter Wilson Fairport Convention has been making great music for over fifty years. Credited with originating British folk-rock music, the band has been through many changes but the current members retain a passion for live performance.
