October 2012 Programme Welcome to our bumper edition of activities for this October half term! This year’s half term is sure to be an exciting one with over 50 sports, arts and museum courses, spooky Halloween workshops and Lancaster’s famous Fireworks Spectacular. It’s all set to be an amazing week! New activities for this year include a water polo training week, scavenger hunts, nature detective courses and girls’ football training. As always, our places sell out fast, so make sure you book early to secure your place. Whatever you decide to try this holiday, you’re sure to have lots of fun, make new friends and have a truly memorable experience.

How to use this guide The details for all of our holiday activities can be found in this brochure, listed in both A to Z format and in a day by day format. The back page also has an ‘at a glance’ section that lists all the activities in date order. Please note that each workshop has different requirements e.g. age, specific clothing, venues vary and transport is sometimes provided. Please see each workshop individually. Please also note that due to some workshops being outdoors they are weather dependant and can be cancelled on the day. If you are concerned on the day if a particular activity is running or not, please contact Salt Ayre Sports Centre for confirmation.

Activities for under 8 year olds Throughout our brochure you will find an increased number of workshops for 4 to 7 year olds. PLEASE NOTE: A responsible adult must stay on site during any workshop for children under 8 years old. Parents are expected to take part with their child in some workshops. Booking Information Bookings can be taken in person, by post and by phone from Monday 8 October.

Please note that booking is required for all Lancaster City Council activities including all FREE activities. Any activities that are provided by other organisations and Carnforth, Heysham and Hornby Swimming Pools must be booked directly with them. Full contact details are provided throughout this booklet. 1. To book and pay in person Bookings with cash and card payments can be made in person by visiting Salt Ayre Sports Centre between 8am and 9pm Monday to Friday, or between 8.30am and 6pm Saturday and Sunday. Be sure to have a fully completed booking form for each applicant and your payment.

2. To book and pay by postal application (no cash, cheques only) 1. Cheques are the only means of payment when applying by post. 2. Firstly, fully complete a booking form (you will find two forms at the centre pages of this booklet). Use only one form per person. 3. Calculate the cost of the activities booked. 4. Across your cheque, write in words “An amount not to exceed £...” 5. Make the cheque payable to Lancaster City Council and sign the cheque. We will write in the final amount and send you your receipt. 6. Make sure you have signed and dated the declaration.

Our friendly staff will guide you through the booking process. This will be done during your booking.

Additional Information Activity information - We strongly advise that all participants wear suitable clothing for the activity that they are due to take part in. Information about suitable clothing or requirements for each session can be found in pages 11 to 16. Disabled access - Where possible, we use premises which are fully accessible. Passport to Leisure holders - If your child has or is included on a Passport to Leisure card, they are entitled to £1 discount per activity. However, the organisers reserve the right to make changes. Participation in all the activities is entirely at the participant’s own risk. A-Z - Activity Guide Be a Zoo Keeper Have you got what it takes to become a zoo keeper for the day? Working with our zoo keepers at Williamson Park you will learn how to look after animals, help feed them and get the Butterfly House ready for opening. Are you brave enough to handle some of our mini-beasts? This will be a great morning for anyone interested in animals.

Bird watching NEW! Join our Zoo Keepers in a bird watching session at Williamson Park. Help us feed our native birds, including Wrens and Sparrow Hawks and join us in exploring their habitat of Fenham Carr. This will be a great morning for anyone interested in native birds.

Blue, Green, Yellow, Dead - live action zombie game It's dark, claustrophobic - you have a mission - to find three vials - Blue... Green... Yellow... If you don't you could end up DEAD! You’re armed with a high quality paintball gun... there are trapdoors, confined spaces and dead ends and then there are the zombies... time is short... can you succeed? Will you survive? Please note that the paintball guns are only used to shoot zombies (not each other). You must be of a reasonable level of fitness to participate in this activity.

Bowling bonanza FREE! Bowls is a great sport that's suitable for all. This session teaches you the basics of the game and lets you test your new skills in a number of fun games.

Bug hunt FREE! This is a fantastic opportunity to explore the woodlands and discover creepy crawlies using our bug hunting equipment.

Craft and swim Join us for three hours of arts and crafts followed by one hour of fun in the pool. Make your own jewellery, greetings card, bookmarks and many more. We supply all the materials, you provide the imagination.

Crazy inflatable fun Make a splash this half term with two hours of mayhem in Salt Ayre pool. You’ll love racing along our spooky inflatable ghost ship and playing with our huge range of inflatable toys and floats. The water slide and spa are open and there’s great music to get you in the party mood. The baby pool will also be open so that younger children can have fun too.

Did you know? All our holiday activities are run by trained professionals who are experts at working with young people. Whatever you get up to this holiday, rest assured that you will be in safe hands! Cycle games If you know how to cycle, then why not try the challenge of playing some games whilst riding your bike? Enjoy competing in pairs or in teams with activities such as the slalom and cone-heads to name but a few. Challenge yourself to do the balance box and many more exciting games in this fun and active session.

Distance swimming badge session This is a great opportunity to test your swimming and get rewarded for your effort. You can swim any distance from 25m to 5,000m. If you think you have the stamina then come and join us to complete a distance swimming badge. Learn how to dive with our fully qualified swimming teacher. Learn how to perform sitting, standing dives, dive through hoops and dive down to the bottom of the deep end for treasure.

Extreme Sports - Skiing / indoor skydiving / climbing / sledging NEW! Calling all you adrenaline junkies! Test your nerves with a day packed full of excitement at Airkix and Chill Factore. We start the day with two 60 second indoor skydives*. For this activity you are given all the safety equipment and are supervised at all times whilst inside the skydiving area. To see the sky dive in action visit Airkix.com. After the skydiving we make our way over to the Chill Factore where the adventure continues with a 1 hour skiing lesson on real snow! Then it’s onto the indoor climbing wall to test your head for heights before making our way back onto the snow to experience the NEW snow carving sledging. This specially designed sledge allows you to dodge and weave down the slope at incredible speeds. All the activities are supervised by experienced, qualified coaches and all the equipment is supplied. You just need all the right clothing and a packed lunch, oh and don’t forget nerves of steel! This great day out that would cost £94 if booked individually, but with us it’s available for the bargain price of £35. *To take your skydiving experience to the max, why not dare to try the high-flyer challenge using a 30ft high chamber? If you are up for it, this experience will cost an extra £5 per person on the day.

Fencing Come and learn the noble art of fencing and take your first steps to becoming the next Musketeer “all for one and one for all”. This introductory session will teach you all the correct techniques you will need to complete the fencing competition at the end of the session. This course is ideal for beginners.

Fire building FREE! Experience the thrill of building safe fires, toasting marshmallows and making a delicious s’more (a delicious American campfire treat).

A-Z Activity Guide

Diving school


Football coaching If you’re football mad and want to learn new skills then this is the activity for you. During this hour and a half session, you’ll receive coaching by a fully qualified football coach on the synthetic pitch at Salt Ayre. At the end of the session, there will be the opportunity to show off your skills with some fun team games and matches.

Girls’ football coaching NEW! Same session as above, but this time it’s just for the girls. Come and enjoy a fun football coaching session and learn some new skills and techniques.

Halloween night FREE and NEW! Happy Mount Park invites you to our FREE spooky Halloween night. Join us for an evening of fun activities including a junior disco, story telling, magic shows, pumpkin competitions and a children’s/adult fancy dress competition. This event is open access, so just turn up and join in the fun.

I’m a child.......get me out of here! You have seen the TV programme now experience the show for real! Experience bush tucker trials and all the excitement that comes with it. If you’re up for a challenge and a laugh this is the activity for you.

Indoor climbing Come and try the new indoor climbing wall at Lancaster University’s sports centre. This session is suitable for both beginners and advanced climbers. You will receive expert tuition on how to overcome the slabs, the vertical and overhanging walls. Please note you MUST wear laced up trainers to take part in this activity.

Indoor junior Olympics Do you fancy being the next Olympic champion? If so this could be your first step in achieving a gold medal in the future. Your all-round athletic skills will be tested during this two hours of action-packed events including long jump, javelin, shot putt, sprint and relay.

Indoor mini Olympics As above, but this one and a half hour session is suitable for younger children.

Indoor mini tennis Mini tennis is a fun way for anyone aged between 4 and 7 years to learn the basic skills of tennis. Mini tennis has been designed to allow young players to develop at a speed that suits them. All sessions will be delivered by a professional tennis coach.

Indoor tennis coaching This is a fun session for anyone aged between 8 and 12 years to learn the basics of tennis. During this session you will learn skills such as forehand, backhand volley and serve. You will then get a chance to try your newly developed skills in the end of session competition. All sessions will be delivered by a professional tennis coach.

Learn to cycle This short course is aimed at children who cannot yet ride or still use stabilisers. Please bring a roadworthy bike which allows the seat to be lowered so that your child can get his/her feet flat on the ground and suitable clothing for being outdoors.

Nature detective FREE! Join us on our nature trail in Happy Mount Park and find out more about our local natural environment. Why do leaves turn brown? Why do squirrels store food? Why do mini beasts love to shelter under damp, dark logs? All will be answered in this fascinating workshop.

Pool party NEW! Join in the fun at our very special swimming pool party. Bring your own floats, inflatables and toys or enjoy the ones provided at the pool and splash along to the freshest pop music. Fun for all the family!

Quicksticks FREE! Learn some new skills and play a fun game of Quicksticks hockey. This activity is great fun and will give you a real taste of this fast and exciting sport.

Rush hockey NEW! Experience the exciting new team sport that everyone’s talking about. Rush hockey is a scaled down version of the full game that’s full of quick-fire fun and energy. Already a hit activity with adults at Salt Ayre and across the country, this session brings the game to a younger audience. Get yourself down to Salt Ayre for a real sporting rush.

Scavenger hunt NEW! FREE! How many autumn treasures can you find in Happy Mount Park? Come along to this fun session and discover nature at its best. Each child gets their own spotter sheet to keep a track of their discoveries. How many treasures can you find in your garden or around your school?

Skiing for beginners / tubing / luging - family fun This exciting session is ideal for children and parents alike. Learn to ski down the dry-ski slope at Pendle Ski Club and learn how to turn, race and most importantly stop. After the skiing and a spot of lunch the fun keeps on going with a tubing and luging session. This session is lead by the club’s own expert instructors and is ideal for beginners. Please note a maximum of two parents per child. Also a maximum of two children per parent. You must attend this workshop with a parent whatever your age and the parent has to pay.

Snorkelling Explore the depths of Carnforth Pool! Learn the basic snorkelling techniques and then practice these skills in some fun underwater games. If you do not have a snorkel you can borrow one of ours.

Sports mania FREE! This is a great activity for anyone who’s mad about sport. Join us in Regent Park and take part in a variety of sports including football, hockey and kwik cricket.

Survival adventure day Are you the next Bear Grylls? We will be heading to the great wilderness of Warton Crag to explore the wild places of Lancashire. We will embark on a great adventure! You will learn how to build shelters, cook food, make traps, take part in a treasure hunt and much, much more. Please bring warm clothing, hat, gloves, a waterproof jacket and a packed lunch.

Tennis FREE! Could you be the next Wimbledon champion? Come along to this exciting session and play a variety of fun tennis games. Practice hitting a few tennis balls whilst learning the basics of tennis.

Treasure hunt Can you solve the clues and put together the puzzle and discover where the treasure is hidden? If so come along and take part in this fun and exciting Treasure Hunt. Will you find the treasure?

Water polo week NEW! A fantastic introduction to the fun and challenging sport of water polo. This week long course is taken by a long-standing member of the Great Britain water polo team. During each session you’ll learn all the skills needed to be a water polo player and put them into practice with a few small sided matches. Why not try something new this half term and enrol on water polo week.

Wet and dry day A totally brilliant day not to be missed at Salt Ayre Sports Centre. Starting with a brief introduction about the day’s activities, then it’s off to the pool for our famous fun and floats session until lunchtime. Please note that lunch is supervised but not provided so take advantage of our excellent cafe facility. After lunch it’s off to the main hall for an afternoon of sporting fun and mayhem. Included in this action packed afternoon is football, dodgeball and Danish long ball.

Join in the fun every Saturday afternoon at Salt Ayre Sports Centre from 3 pm to 4.15pm. • 15 metre inflatable ghost ship with climbs, slides and obstacles • Loads of fun inflatable toys and floats in the main pool • 50m waterslide and spa pool • Great music and party atmosphere for the whole family

Every Saturday from 3pm to 4.30pm £4 for adults and £3 for juniors. Family tickets for 2 adults and 2 children are also available for £12. Please note that you CANNOT book this activity, it is pay on the day only. Tickets will be on sale from 9.45am on the day. To use the water slide you must be a minimum height of 1.3m.
