PRECISION AIR HELPING BOXING SPREAD ITS WINGS
November’s Dar Fight Night is the latest in a series of international events putting the Tanzanian city on the world professional boxing map. Precision Air is part of the team ensuring both viewers and the big-name boxers have the time of their lives.
The sport of boxing is growing in popularity across the globe and Africa is key to that development. The continent has produced some great world champions in years past, such as Corrie Sanders, of South Africa, who won the WBO Heavyweight belt by knocking out Wladimir Klitschko in2003, and Ghanaian Ike Quartey, who is a former WBA Welter weight champion boxer who fought numerous other world champion boxers with Oscar ‘The Golden Boy’De La Hoya being the most notable.Sports were hit hard in this era of Covid-19 with some of the most anticipated international events, including the Tokyo Olympics and the Euros football tournament, being delayed a full year.
Tough times
Amid these tough times for sport, Tanzania has begun to tap into the boxing market. Jackson Group Sports is leading the way with its series of big name boxing nights ‘Rumble in Dar’.The title is a twist on ‘Rumble in the Jungle’, the name coined for the historic match-up between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in Kinshasa, in what is now the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
Two ‘Rumble in Dar’ boxing nights have been held at the Next Door Area in Tanzania’s biggest city and another event, ‘Dar Fight Night’ is scheduled for the same venue in November. Boxing fans have been treated to some exciting bouts between big-name fighters such as homegrown super welterweight Hassan Mwakinyo.
The events mark a successful introduction into sports event management for Jackson Sports Group, which started out as a boutique marketing agency.
Jackson Group Sport CEO Kelvin Twissa said: “Branching out from being solely a marketing agency and moving into the sport scene was never an easy step and it took us many long days and many sleepless nights trying to find the right reasons to bring around a sports agency that would flip the market on its head and improve the sports scene as a whole in Tanzania.
“Bringing the [Las] Vegas experience to Dar has always been our number one goal.”
So far, the agency has lived up to those expectations with boxers from around the world taking part in these fight nights with Africa’s very best boxers squaring up to opponents from the USA, Argentina, Bulgaria and many more.
Matchmaking
This level of international matchmaking has always been the target for the promoters as they try to distinguish themselves from local promotions that only have all-Tanzanian contests in the ring.
“With this platform we hope to one day host a fight of the magnitude of an Ali vs Foreman Rumble in the Jungle but with a more modern touch and actually hold it in the jungles of a Ngorongoro or Serengeti now”, says Jackson’s Head of Sports Sheikhmoun Hala Hala.
He added: “Events of this magnitude are not a one-man job however. We value our onboarded partners such as KCB Bank, Precision Air, Global Boxing Stars, Epic Sport Entertainments, ONOMO Hotels, Tanzania Tourism Board and many more.”
Precision Air made sure the international fighters on the card had a good experience of Tanzania by providing world class service. Some of the fighters who visited Tanzania will surely be back having been given a trip of a lifetime after their bouts.
Bulagarian professional boxing brothers Tervel and Kubrat Pulev were given a proper tour when they were flown out from Dar Es Salaam to Arusha on Precision Airways and then taken on a safari around Ngorongoro, visiting the Hadza tribe and going ona camping trip.
Look out for more details on The Rumble In Dar third edition (‘Dar Fight Night’) coming soon. It’s an event we should take enormous pride by putting Tanzania on the international professional boxing map. In time we hope Dar will become a Mecca of boxing like the MGM Arena in LasVegas, MSG in New York and The 02 in London.
