A Note From The Director
On behalf of the middle school students & I, a warm, excited welcome to our production of TREASURE ISLAND. Our students are very excited to take to the stage and perform for you all! Robert Louis Stevenson loaded his original pirate tale with a bounty of colorful characters, action and danger all to the delight of imaginations young and old. Treasure Island literally defined the elements of classic pirate lore including treasure maps marked with an “X”, the black spot, mysterious jungle islands and the quintessential image of the one-legged pirate. Since its first publication Treasure Island has been translated into multiple languages, adapted into numerous films, stage plays and television specials. Even Walt Disney himself would produce his own film version of the story. He would also use it as inspiration for his Pirates of the Caribbean Disneyland theme park ride, which would eventually grow into its own film franchise. At the heart of this ultimate pirate adventure, Stevenson crafted the unlikely friendship between Jim Hawkins and the pirate Long John Silver. Though young Jim sails off to discover the riches promised by a stolen map, it is his greater discovery that transforms him forever; In everyone lies the potential for good and evil. Which of these Jim becomes, depends upon the treasure he chooses to pursue. A successful middle school production cannot be managed without the help and support from the whole school community, so thank you! Our theatre program at Landon teaches our students how to work together as a team, share responsibilities, be reliable and develop self-confidence. All parents and teachers know that a child is naturally curious and imaginative and that these are forces and gifts to be encouraged and developed – this, a vital part of school life. I am incredibly proud of what they have achieved. Thank you to the whole cast and crew for your dedication and energy towards this adventure. Please sit back and enjoy the show! ARGGGG!
