Speaker: Philip van Wassenaer

Conservation Arboriculture and Tree Risk Assessment This presentation examines aspects of tree morphology, aging, survival strategies, co-evolution and micro-ecology and veteran tree management techniques. A review of veteran/heritage trees from around the world will be presented to demonstrate how old trees are safely maintained in the landscape. We will also explore tree risk assessment methods and discuss how these can be applied to the management of aging urban trees to balance ecological values with human aesthetics and safety issues.

A View from the Top of the Redwood Forest The redwood forests of coastal California are a unique environment, found nowhere else on Earth. These forest giants are also arks of biodiversity, and can teach us many lessons about the lives of trees and other organisms. This presentation draws from lessons learned during a climbing expedition with Dr. Steve Sillett, the foremost redwood researcher in the world, during which the team used sonic tomography to assess the level of internal decay in the highest reaches of the redwoods.

Speaker: Dr. Mohyuddin Mirza When plants don’t get what they need, and people are confused about the signals they are sending, wrong decisions are made. This session will examine pH and EC and how these problems become more complicated when rusts, viruses and thrips appear. Dr. Mirza will also talk about the problems growers faced during the 20132014 season and guide you through problem-solving strategies.

Speaker: Dr. Chris Murray What do studies of turfgrass fertilization show us about the effect of runoff and water quality? Many communities are starting to ban fertilizer use – are they justified in taking this action? Dr. Murray will examine the results of his literature reviews on runoff in the urban environment. What’s new at the Prairie Turfgrass Research Center (PTRC)? Speaker: Jim Ross The PTRC is the leading research facility for the management of turfgrasses on the Canadian prairies. Alberta Greenhouse IPM Project Research and Development Updates Speaker: Dr. Kwesi Ampong-Nyarko Kwesiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s current project objective is to increase greenhouse profitability by promoting the use of integrated pest management and stimulating continuous improvement of producersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; crop practices. The project has completed a baseline survey and these results will be presented.

Disease Management for Greenhouse Crops Speaker: Dr. Jian Yang Research on disease management for greenhouse vegetables and a new filter device being developed to treat recirculated nutrient solution in hydroponic systems are a couple of the projects that are ongoing with Alberta Innovates. Results of these and other projects will be presented. Biochar: Green Industry Opportunities Speaker: Don Harfield and Jan Slaski Biochar making and use as a soil amendment has been practiced for over 2,000 years and is generating new interest in green industry applications. Hear how the Alberta Biochar Initiative is spearheading the development of commercial integration of biochar into the Alberta marketplace.

Opportunities for Integrated Greenhouse Production Speaker: Dr. Nick Savidov A bio-digestor system has been designed where all available nutrients are available for use by plants. Data will be presented on tomatoes grown in chicken manure using this system. Updates will also be provided on the aquaponics growth system as part of integrated production.

Botanic Gardens around the World Speaker: Jane Reksten Botanic gardens have a history dating back hundreds of years. Gardeners of any level and experience can benefit from visiting these amazing institutions, gaining information and inspiration. Using images from her visits to botanic gardens in places such as London, Dublin, New York, San Francisco and Vancouver, Jane will explore what makes a garden a botanic garden, and will showcase the role these gardens play for gardeners and our society.

Green Roofs: Learning From the Challenges Speaker: Gord Koch In the prairie provinces, and specifically Alberta, the trend in green roof applications can still be considered in the preliminary stages, but has shown positive potential through steady growth. The benefit of green roofs are becoming well known across horticulture. Building and consulting industry sectors are contributing to many multidiscipline teams developing and implementing green roofs. As this sector moves toward maturity, there are lessons to be learned from the challenges of designing, installing and maintaining green roofs. This presentation will provide an overview of challenges that confront green roof implementation and considerations in addressing the challenges.

Speaker Biographies

Dr. Kwesi Ampong-Nyarko is a research scientist at Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. He received his PhD in Agricultural Botany from the University of Reading in England. He has a multi-disciplinary background with demonstrated expertise in crop production, weed science, Integrated Pest Management and international agriculture development. His current research is on diversification in field and greenhouse crops.

Bill Arman worked for and helped grow one of the biggest landscape outfits in the US. He’s seen how the big boys do it, and how their systems and structures work. His know-how is rooted in recruiting, hiring, training and growing great people - that along with quality assurance. Bill’s sessions provide folks with practical, actionable information. His hands-on, interactive approach is fun, challenging, and leaves participants with specific items they can take back to their organization and use.

Dr. Michael Brownridge received his Bachelor and PhD degrees from the University of Newcastle, Faculty of Agriculture. In 2009, he joined the Vineland Research and Innovation Centre as Research Director in Horticultural Production Systems. Dr. Brownridge oversees four research programs while maintaining active research focused on the development of bio-control tools and their integration into production systems in turfgrass and greenhouse crops.

Dr. Ken Fry, Coordinator for the Horticulture Program and Entomology Instructor at Olds College, has been involved in insect pest management research, teaching and extension for 25 years, including nine years as a research scientist at the Alberta Research Council. His research is focused on biological control of insect pests and integrated pest management.

Don Harfield is the leader of the Thermochemical Processing Team as part of Bioresource Technologies located in Vegreville, and is a researcher at Alberta Innovates – Technology Futures. His focus is on research and development projects related to carbon-based specialty products including biochar. Don is technical lead for the Alberta Biochar Initiative and is on the advisory board for the International Biochar Initiative.

Mike Jenkins is a Biological Sciences Technician for the City of Edmonton Pest Management Laboratory. He has been splashing in puddles and collecting weird bugs in this position for more than 20 years, first as a student and later as supervisor. Although the lab is probably most famous for monitoring mosquito populations, one of their primary tasks is trapping and surveying to detect invasive species that could harm our urban forest.

Troy Kimoto works for the CFIA where he has been a Forest Pest Survey Biologist for the past 12 years. He's been involved in developing survey procedures for EAB and other non-indigenous forest pests such as the Asian Long-horned Beetle and Thousand Cankers Disease. 2014 GISC | 17

Speaker Biographies

Gord Koch is an Instructor at the Olds College School of Animal Sciences and Horticulture and is in his 14th year delivering courses in the management, design and implementation of traditional and sustainable landscape applications. Prior to joining Olds College, he spent 25 years managing the design and installation of large-scale public and commercial landscape projects. Gord has been an accredited Green Roof Professional since 2009.

Ed Laflamme started his business in 1971 with $700 he borrowed from his mom. He turned that into a multi-million dollar company before selling it in 1999. As a long-time owner he has made enough mistakes to qualify him to help most folks avoid making the same ones (or worse). He understands your frustrations, worries and concerns. Ed is co-founder of The Harvest Group and his latest venture, The Harvest Way Academy, is an online resource for business owners and managers. Ed is also recognized as a Landscape Industry Certified Manager.

Dr. Barry Lyons is a Research Scientist with Natural Resources Canada, Canadian Forest Service in Sault Ste. Marie, ON. He obtained his PhD in Entomology from the University of British Columbia. Barry has been investigating the biology of the Emerald Ash Borer beginning shortly after its discovery in Canada in 2002. His recent research focuses on the biology and biological control of this invasive insect.

Everett Marwood holds a BASc degree from the University of Waterloo. He is now a Calgarybased investor and entrepreneur, and is very excited to speak on green technology and promising profits that will evolve from the Algae AquaCulture Technology refinery developed in Whitefish, Montana.

Bill McCurry has a candid and fact-based approach to reality. His sessions are full of real world applicability expressed with lively humor and enthusiasm. Billâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s background includes being CEO of 17 retail locations and 225 employees, coâ&#x20AC;?author of four business books, business radio talk show host, columnist for Green Profit Magazine and frequent speaker at leading horticultural events.

Dr. Moyhuddin Mirza retired from Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development in October 2008. He is now a consultant for the Alberta Greenhouse Growers Association (AGGA) for education and extension. He continues to write for the AGGA newsletter and maintains an active interest in the development of the greenhouse industry.

Jerry Montgomery operates Montgomery Consulting Services, a firm that works exclusively in ornamental horticulture supply chain. His career has allowed him to work with growers, distributors and breeders, giving him a broad perspective of the supply chain. Jerry uses his experiences in the various segments of the industry, combined with his vast exposure to retail, to develop strategies used to compete successfully in a changing retail environment.

Nabeel Mohammad works with Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development (AARD) as an irrigation specialist and project lead with the greenhouse program at CDC South in Brooks. Nabeel has conducted applied research projects in aquaponics and substrates trials, and irrigation and nutrient management focusing on achieving results on growing healthy plants. He received his MSc Horticulture degree from the University of Baghdad in 1988.

Dr. Christopher Murray has more than 14 years experience in the study of water quality and the interaction of water with materials. He has undertaken studies on the impact of nutrients on surface and groundwater quality, on technology aimed at removing dissolved and suspended pollutants from stormwater and wastewater, and on the impact of different soil amendment products on agricultural runoff.

Jane Reksten is currently the Manager of the Botanic Gardens and Greenhouses at Olds College. She received her BA from the University of Victoria in Microbiology and Environmental Studies. After five years in the landscape maintenance industry, she joined the Calgary Zoo and Botanical Gardens, first as Schoolyard Naturalization Project leader, and later as Botanical Education Coordinator and Manager of Continuing Education.

Jim Ross has been the Research Manager for the turfgrass section at Olds College since 1991. Prior to Jimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s arrival, a research partnership with the Alberta Turfgrass Research Foundation was developed and this long standing partnership has ensured that Olds College is the home for turfgrass research in Western Canada. Jim has been responsible for business operations, and the planning and implementation of various research areas that include: stress physiology, pathology, weed studies and varietal trials.

Dr. Nick Savidov, PhD, is an internationally recognized expert in agro-ecosystems. He was the first researcher to suggest using carbonized agricultural by-products, known as biochar, as a soilless medium for greenhouse production. Nick continues his research in the Bio-Industrial Opportunities Branch as a Senior Research Scientist developing advanced agricultural systems based on water and nutrient recycling for commercial growers.

Dr. Jan J. Slaski is a Senior Researcher and a Program Leader with the Bioresource Technologies Unit of Alberta Innovates - Technology Futures in Vegreville. He obtained his MSc in plant physiology from the Warsaw Agricultural University and PhD in Agronomy from the Plant Breeding and Acclimatization Institute in Poland. His current research is focused on developing technologies applicable to adaptation of the agriculture industry to changing environmental trends.

Speaker Biographies

Kelly Storm has been an instructional assistant with the Olds College Horticulture School since 1995, and has been studying and growing ornamental grasses in Zone 2 & 3 locations. In her spare time she is the business manager of a commercial greenhouse growing custom containers, annuals, perennials and ornamental grasses.

Tim Tripp has been involved with turfgrass as a student, researcher, educator and now as a sales representative. In 2011 he took the position of Canadian Product Manager for Neudorff North America. This position was created as a result of the success of Fiesta lawn weed killer in Ontario. Timâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s goal is to foster growth in the turfgrass industry by means of a high quality, low risk approach to pest control products.

Philip van Wassenaer, BSc Environmental Sciences, Master of Forest Conservation, is the principal consultant for Urban Forest Innovations, Inc., which specializes in the preservation, enhancement, and management of the urban forest using a research and science-based approach. He is an ISA Certified Arborist, a member of ASCA, and a Past President and Director of the Ontario Urban Forest Council.

Dr. Jian Yang has over 25 years of experience in plant pathology, working mainly on canola and greenhouse vegetable diseases. Her other projects include plant disease diagnosis, greenhouse vegetables and turf diseases, and biochar as greenhouse growing media. She obtained a BAgSc from Huazhong Agricultural University in China, MSc from the University of Saskatchewan and PhD from the University of Alberta.

Dr. John Zhang received his PhD in plant pathology from Ohio State University. He works as senior manager, Director of Greenhouse Branch for Alberta Agriculture and Rural Development. Dr. Zhang has held a number of greenhouse management and executive positions in greenhouses throughout North America. He is a frequent speaker at seminars and conferences, and sits on a number of advisory committees for greenhouse production, management, and research and technology development.
