Inmyexperience,thethingsthatfeedfrustrationandstressare unclearcorevalues,vaguepurpose,andanabsenceofclear visionarygoals. Entrepreneursspendalotoftimescramblingtobalancethe needsoftheirclientelewiththechallengesofmanagingpeople andprofits.Rapidadvancementsintechnology(andtheexpectationofrapidresponses)hascomplicatedhowwedowhatwe doforaliving.Theendresultbeingamoreintensetestof companystructure,systems,adaptabilityandresilience. Successfullypassingthesetestsdependsuponhavingasolid companyfoundation.Corevaluesreflectthenon-negotiable attitudesinabusiness.Whencommunicatedproperlytheydrive consistency,bothinemployeeperformanceandcustomer experience.

Theideaistogrowfoodinaharshenvironment,simulatingwhat itwouldbeliketogrowfoodinspace.Thefreshproducewillbe consumedbythe10-personcrewthatwillbestayingoverthe winterinAntarctica,providingnotonlynutritionbenefits,but psychologicalbenefits. Bamseysaidithasbeeninterestingtohearfromthecrewwho stayedatthestationlastwinterabouthowmuchtheywouldhave appreciatedhavingaccesstofreshfood.Histeamisontracktogive themthatfreshfoodthisyear.
WeatherandseaiceconditionsdelayedthearrivaloftheSouth AfricanresearchvesselthatwascarryingtheEDENISSgreenhouse containers for more than a week, but thanks to a buffer in the schedule,theteamismanagingtomeetallofitsmilestones, Bamseysaid. “Inadditiontothestrawberryseedlingsthatourteamtransported toAntarctica,wenowhavesomeseedsgerminatinginasmall growthchamberwithintheNeumayerStation,”hesaid.“Inafew moredaystheseplantswillbetransportedfromthestationinto ourEDENISSgreenhouseandthegrowthcontinuedinour facility.” Thatwillgivetheteamtimetotestthegreenhousesystems—it’s notyourtypicalgreenhouse,butusesinnovativetechnologyto delivernutrients,managetheatmosphereand providewaterandlighttotheplants—before theseedlingstakeupresidence. Lesson: •Alwayscall911beforeusingafireextinguisher. •Keepaclearescaperouteavailableifneeded. •Iftheflamesreachtheceiling(orworkshop)orspreadquicklywithinthevehiclemoveawayfrom theareaimmediately. •Anaturalreactionistoaimtheextinguisherattheflames,butthecorrectwayistoaimdirectlyat thefuel. Firesneedfuel,oxygen,andheatinorderto burn.Fireextinguisherscontaina smothering material that either cools the burningfuelorstarvesthefireofoxygen. Pullingoutthesafetypinandholdingdown theleveratthetopofthecylinderreleases thepressurizedcontentsoftheextinguisher. Extinguishersaremountedinaccessible locations.
UsetheP.A.S.Smethodtoputoutafire: •Pullthepinatthetopoftheextinguisher toallowyoutosqueezethelever. •Aimatthebaseofthefire,nottheflames. Toputoutthefireyoumustextinguishthe fuel. •Squeezetheleverslowlytoreleasethe pressurizedcontents. Releasingthehandlewillstopthedischarge. •Sweepfromsidetoside.Movethehoseof theextinguisherbackandforthuntilthefire iscompletelyout. The fire extinguisher should always be recharged or replaced immediately after use.
