Landscape Onsites Lesson: Fire Extinguishers Objective: tofamiliarizecrewmemberswiththeappropriateandsafeuseofafireextinguisher. Training Materials: differenttypesoffireextinguishers

Lesson: •Alwayscall911beforeusingafireextinguisher. •Keepaclearescaperouteavailableifneeded. •Iftheflamesreachtheceiling(orworkshop)orspreadquicklywithinthevehiclemoveawayfrom theareaimmediately. •Anaturalreactionistoaimtheextinguisherattheflames, butthecorrectwayistoaimdirectlyat thefuel. Firesneedfuel, oxygen, andheatinorderto burn.Fireextinguisherscontaina smothering material that either cools the burningfuelorstarvesthefireofoxygen. Pullingoutthesafetypinandholdingdown theleveratthetopofthecylinderreleases thepressurizedcontentsoftheextinguisher. Extinguishersaremountedinaccessible locations.

UsetheP.A.S.Smethodtoputoutafire: •Pullthepinatthetopoftheextinguisher toallowyoutosqueezethelever. •Aimatthebaseofthefire, nottheflames. Toputoutthefireyoumustextinguishthe fuel. •Squeezetheleverslowlytoreleasethe pressurizedcontents. Releasingthehandlewillstopthedischarge. •Sweepfromsidetoside.Movethehoseof theextinguisherbackandforthuntilthefire iscompletelyout. The fire extinguisher should always be recharged or replaced immediately after use.
