GREGORY N LANE Architecture + Design 2013
Hey, there! 000 is metaphorically the start of my journey as a designer and 007 is where I stand today. Between these two points I have pulled 8.25 all-nighters per semester, worked 500 hours in AutoCAD, and spent 5 months traveling through Europe acquiring a global perspective in the field of architecture and design. In my 39,500th hour as an architecture student this book reflects everything I have learned and absorbed as an aspiring designer. Our culture’s identity is ephemeral, constantly transforming and reinventing itself. The field of architecture is one that helps to define that identity. It is my belief that architecture attempts to ameliorate our living conditions by responding to current social and economic concerns. My interest in this discipline is rooted in world issues, and how design can be transformed into an actualized solution.

CLEMSON UNIVERSITY CAMPUS Instructor: ROBERT SILANCE Duration: 4 WEEKS Time: SPRING 2012
This project entails developing a multistory housing complex that explores forward thinking approaches to student living. The goal of this project is to create an innovative, dynamic, mixed use campus center. This building is geared towards upperclassmen and attempts to draw students back to oncampus housing. This new residence hall includes an extra 100,000 square feet to address the housing overflow problem and to provide students with study spaces to encourage a living-learning environment. This junior-senior housing complex is divided into two masses connected through the arrangement of designated study spaces. These study lofts are located on each floor of the building, and are accessible to the students directly from their living quarters. On the fourth floor, the west and east sides of the residences connect through one long elevated study room.

CHICAGO, ILLINOIS Instructor: MARTHA SKINNER Duration: 6 WEEKS Time: FALL 2012 With over 2 million square feet, this skyscraper includes new residences, a school, offices, commercial, and market space which sit among the riverfront in the West Loop of Chicago. The program is divided into four separate buildings, with a market space occupying the bottom two floors of each. This market space provides fresh produce for its residents which is grown on the site. This skyscraper acts as a vertical farm, providing its 10,000 residents with 2,000 calories of food per day. The main facade of the building contains moving palettes that grow various types of vegetation. Illinois is the 3rd most fertile state with over 70% of its land designated for farming. There are currently over 1,500 different types of soil, which allow for a wide range of crops to be grown. The diagrams above show the types of crops best suited for growing in the city of Chicago, both during the summer and winter months.

These vegetation palettes are 10’ by 10’ box frames that remain suspended along the exterior facade of the building. Within each frame are a series of cylinders from which plants are grown. These cylinders sit on a rotating track which allow the vegetation to remain in an upright position regardless of the orientation of the box. Using hydroponic technology, these plants are able to grow in a suspended container with a minimal amount of upkeep and maintenance. Once the palette of vegetation is ripe, it may be lowered down to the ground level of the building using the cable borne elevator system. These palettes are then placed around the market space along the riverfront for consumers to pick their own produce.

CLEMSON, SOUTH CAROLINA Instructor: ROBERT BRUHNS Duration: 6 WEEKS Time: SPRING 2013
With a Volkswagen dealership only 40 minutes away, this building’s program functions differently than a typical dealership. Car companies now have websites where consumers can pick out and order their vehicles online. My goal was to reimagine that experience in a three-dimensional form. This building serves as a location where one can design their own car, purchase it, and later come back to pick it up. What distinguishes this experience from ordering a car online is that consumers will be provided with more customizing opportunities. This building also gives people the capability to see the customizing potentials in person.

To further emphasize the Volkswagen sentiment, custom concrete columns in the shape of the VW logo run through the length of the dealership. This design is not only decorative, but also serves as a major support structure for the building.

Clemson Dealership
The closest Volkswagen dealership is less than 40 miles away and has an inventory of over 300 vehicles, the largest within a 100 mile radius. This dealership distinguishes itself from the one in Greenville, due to the wide variety of custom vehicle design features available to the consumer.
OSCILLATING BRIDGE

CHARETTE Partner: Anna Plyler Duration: 2 DAYS Time: SPRING 2013
The intent of this Charette was to engage the process of making through rapid design decisions. My partner, Anna and I, were given the challenge of creating a long-span bridge structure using 250 coffee stirring sticks and string. With three days to design and construct, our bridge needed to support a weight of 12 oz. This studiowide competition was judged upon 3 different criteria: maximum free-span achieved, economy of material, and elegance/innovation. The design of this bridge is inspired by a mockingbird and the oscillating pattern that is created when this bird is in flight. The bridge appears delicate and light-weight to emulate the characteristics of this animal. Our bridge won the elegance/ innovation category.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK
Summer Internship 2013
FLOW is a small architecture firm in the Chelsea district of New York City, specializing in intelligent design paired mobile architecture. “FLOW delivers custom dynamic spaces that accommodate a range of lifestyle needs that are in sync with the changing world that we live in today. Technology and design are developed together simultaneously in such a way to offer unparalleled ease-ofuse for mobile audio/video experiences, ‘smart concierge’, heating and cooling, automated lighting, remote configuration and beyond.” My main roles in this company have been 3D digital modeler, drafter, design coordinator, and technical writer. FLOW is undergoing a period of massive expansion, and to account for this, I have been given a wide-range of responsibilities, not just limited to the design field. A majority of my time has been spent fabricating and translating the ideas of the chief architect into digital images and documents for clients and investors. The following images show some of the work I have created. FLOW is not just an architecture firm. They also produce high-end furniture and custom decor installations, most of which is showcased below.
In October FLOW attended the 2013 CEDIA EXPO, a technology
conference in Boulder, Colorado. My final task before completing
this internship was to propose a booth design for a 10 x 20 foot space. The images to the right show some different concepts I
have devised. Much of this assignment dealt with space planning and graphic design.
