THE IMPORTANCE OF DEVELOPING AFFORDABLE HOUSING Presented by Lane Lowry
EVERYONE DESERVES A HOME FINDING A HOME ON A LOW INCOME Everyone deserves a home to call their home, no matter what their income may be. However, rent and mortgage payments have skyrocketed in recent years and show no signs of slowing down. While many would think this means average income has risen as well, this is often not the case. This is why it’s important to have affordable housing.
RAISING FAMILIES KIDS WANT A PLACE TO CALL HOME It is no secret that raising a family is expensive. Affordable housing can mean the difference between providing the bare minimum for children and giving them everything you want for them. Affordable housing helps ensure children’s health and well-being. Instead of living in poor quality housing that they can barely afford where parents experience stress and anxiety, a family can thrive in stable and affordable housing.
COMMUNITY IMPACT BUILDING A BETTER COMMUNITY Homes are what build a community. When someone can barely afford their rent, it negatively impacts their social well-being. It’s been shown that affordable housing not only uplifts residents, but it also encourages them to make social connections, increases adjacent property values, attracts businesses and jobs, and lowers crime rates. By offering affordable housing in low-income neighborhoods, then developers and housing organizations can create beautiful and stable communities.
CREATING JOB OPPORTUNITIES Where people take residence usually affects where they are able to work. By building more affordable housing, it creates more job opportunities in lowerincome neighborhoods. Affordable housing development improves the local economy, increases job security lowers the risk of evictions and foreclosures, and supports social networks that lead to more job opportunities. Having a job and a home will help families live more comfortably while also improving communities.
HELPING SENIORS AND THE DISABLED FINDING A HOME FOR EVERYONE It isn’t just families that are sometimes unable to afford comfortable or stable housing. Much of the time, seniors and individuals who are disabled can not afford to live in a stable home. With their medical costs alone, being able to afford a decent place to live is nearly impossible. This is why affordable housing is so important to communities. Providing seniors and disabled individuals with a home they can afford will allow them to afford better healthcare and live a healthier life.c
