A CONVERSATION WITH STAFI SAMAKI interview by elena hatfield
London has to be the Mecca for young talent: artists, photographers, fashion designers and filmmakers, look around you to see the bright young things that will soon be at the forefront of the design and media industry in ten years, developing art and innovations that will change our future. The Dazed 100 list showcases this talent and we believe that soon it will have a name we know personally amongst its ranks. On a sunny Saturday afternoon, we had the good fortune to meet with 19-yearold London based photographer Stafi Samaki. Though young, Stafi has already built up a strong career as a photographer which proves she has immense talent. Her portfolio is impressive, full of a diverse range of colour palettes, skin tones and photographic styles all of which show off a vast array of skills for one so young. Capturing local London life, cultural diversity reigns in her work, whilst her use of instant film is reminiscent of a more simplistic time in photography that for her, is inspired by the work of Andy Warhol. Warhol’s photography often consisted of candid polaroid images and this source of inspiration is clearly prevalent in Stafi’s portfolio when comparing the two. Using film is a much slower process compared to digital and in Samaki’s case, it shows confidence in her talent. Unlike digital, you are unable to edit or even see the image you have taken until it is developed, meaning that Stafi relies solely on her own artistic eye during photoshoots. We are simply in love with her and her stunningly candid photography. Fortunately for us, we were able to spend an afternoon with Stafi, getting to know what inspires her work as well as learn a thing or two about her photography.

How have you built up your portfolio and career as a photographer? That’s something that I can’t really answer because since I was fifteen it’s all kind of come naturally to me and I have also had people in different industries help me out. It’s just happened so I can’t really explain my journey because it’s always been developing and I haven’t really thought about what’s occurred when it’s happened.
Did you always want to be a photographer? No, but I realised I was more creatively smart than academic, so arts was obviously a better choice for me.
Most of your work seems to be in a studio, why and how do you feel it differs from outside shoots?
I don’t mind shooting outside but because I have access to a studio I just end up using it so it’s more for practical reasons.
How do you feel about living in London?
What kind of equipment do you use?
It’s expensive, but I have a love and hate relationship with London. It’s good for networking and connections as everyone worth knowing is

as much as I use to. Because I don’t develop regularly after I have used the film, the process is longer and is a bit draining for me.
Tell us about your inspirations.
What is it you love about Polaroid?
Everything around me can inspire me...mainly personal feelings.
I don’t use Polaroid film as it’s expensive - which reminds me, I’m

How do you show this through your work?
What music do you like to listen while you work?
The colours I use. My photography is very colourful and I think that is the way it shows the most.
I’m a fat indie music lover, so sometimes I listen to major
throwbacks. Overall my music taste is eclectic, so I could listen to

How do you build a rapport with people in the studio?
No. Basically I have learnt it all on jobs or through self-learning online. I

Who are your favourite type of people to photograph? I don’t really have a favourite type of people. I will look at someone and know I want to shoot them. It’s like love at first sight. What does photography mean to you? Photography is my life. I fangirl over photography.
Whose work are you most influenced by? Obviously, the people that I shoot, but I never have constant
inspiration. However, I think that my one massive inspiration would be Andy Warhol.
What is your favourite work you have done? My instant film work.
How do you want your photography and career to be in the future?
I would like it to keep going as it’s going, though I definitely want to get more into instant film. What’s your fashion style? I wear whatever feels comfortable. I don’t like that phrase “beauty is pain”, I prefer comfort over pain.
Three things you could not live without? My camera, my niece and Dr Who. You have done a lot for someone so young, what are your thoughts on that?
I feel like I grew up too quickly, and now I am trying to grow up a little less fast paced by trying to take things more slowly. I’m fortunate with this as I feel like I’m in a place where I am able to stay relevant but not have to do so much.

s o f t f o c u s From their renowned Cloud Paint cream blush to their Boy Brow grooming pomade, Glossier has marketed each launch so perfectly to accumulate a massive millennial cult following. The stripped-back, minimalist brand celebrates natural beauty and focuses on products that help accentuate our already existing facial features. The millenial favourite brand primarily focuses on skin-care, but also has a line of fragrances as well as colour cosmetics. One of their most popular launches has been the Perfecting Skin Tint and the Stretch Concealer, in which they recently announced a shade range expansion multiplying both products to a total of 12 shades , making it much more inclusive and accessible for all different skin tones.
Glossier isn’t just an accessible brand in terms of diversity of skin tones, but surprisingly, they also cater for men’s beauty as well. Makeup for men is gaining more and more popularity, and Glossier have catered to this new trend by providing fresh and natural looking making for those who want to look their best without being to obvious about what they are wearing on their face.
We love Glossier for how diverse and inclusive they are, making them our favourite brand for male and female millennials who strive for natural makeup and skincare without too much fuss.
All of Glossier’s products are available to shop on their website at www.glossier.com.

LAURIE MARTIN year one _ fine art _ (ba ) hons _ central s t martins
What is an object in terms of the human consumption, does the object need a purpose to be valuable, how valuable is an object we cannot touch. My practice is primarily ‘video sculptures’, mostly lacking in the human form. By removing the human form, these ‘objects’ become scale deprived. They lack real material and form, but their texture, reflectivity, and subtle colours allow silhouette and substance.
