ABOUT ME The design I do I feel like is a part of me and is a way to talk about myself, so I feel like I should include an about me. My name is Laney Lynn, I’m a designer and visual artist from Dallas, Texas. I’m also a woman, defender of social issues, a traveler, an investigator, a music enthusiast, a friend, a lover, and so many other things. This affects how I design and how I navigate and communicate in the visual world. This year I have learned a lot, and there is so much more to come.

KEEP ME WARM

I wanted my poster to have a feeling. Intimacy is present in a lot of my work and I wanted to convey that with my material. I think textiles hold a lot a feeling as we interact with them every day in very personal ways. I started by crafting each letter in Trade Gothic using loose wool.

I saw this day in hot magenta, as I do a lot of things. There was so much energy, so much passion from the people at washington square park. Everyone was gathered for different reasons but for the same cause. I just felt pink about it.

For this project, we had to print on a found object, and think about how that object and what we were printing on it related to one another to create a thought provoking dialogue.

69 TYPERFACE APPLICATION TRUE & CO LINGERIE RE-BRAND True & Co. is an online lingerie company based in Los Angeles, California. They specialize in comfortable, high quality lingerie and pairing women with the perfect bra and perfect size. Because it is based online, the way the company can make the biggest physical impression is through they’re delivery. I wanted to take this into consideration and create a fun and different packaging and delivery experience through the re-branding.

EXHIBITION CATALOG : “SCRAPS” AT THE COOPER HEWITT 8”X10”, 46 PAGES

SCRAPS

The exhbit “Scraps” at the cooper hewitt is comprised of various objects from their textile collection that are upcycled and put to creative reuse. I wanted this catalog to reflect the style of these objects- linens, cotton, silk, in that it is light and airy and very clean. There’s die-cuts in the cover and the chapter openers to reveal the texture of the fabrics.

LIGHTBULB PACKAGE RE-DESIGN “INDUSTRIAL AND PROGRESSIVE” Generic and brand-name lightbulb packages are often times poorlyl designed and contain unnecessary or repetetive information. We were told to re-design a lightbulb package using two words assigned to us. The words I was meant to capture with these designs were progressive and industrial.

IF AMERICAN BEAUTY WAS A BOOK, IT WOULD NEED A BOOK JACKET

AMERICAN BEAUTIY

92

93

BOOK JACKET DESIGN “AMERICAN BEAUTY” For this book jacket I wanted to use the emblem of the rose from the movie American Beauty but reimagine it. While this movie is romantic it also has a dark side, so I wanted to work with the idea of blood as well. I created a blood stain to look like a paper rose, to hold the two symbols.

THE UNEXPECTED: EXPERIMENTAL GRAPHIC DESIGN

104

EXPERIMENTAL GRAPHIC DESIGN COMPOSITIONS/DIGITAL COLLAGE

COMPOSITIONS

These are excercises in composing using found and appropriated imagry. The idea was to think creatively about the shapes and colors in these images and how we could use them to create a design. This is a small collection of the 400 compostion practices we had to do for class.

108 EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN BOOK “SWEET-BITTER” 4.5”X 7”, 400 PAGES

SWEET BITTER

Sweet-Bitter is a curated, 400 page book of the experiemental compostitons we made in class, existnetial writing, love letters from simone de beuvior’s relationships, personal photos, nonsquiters, and modern artist. The theme and concept behind the book is a visual experience of the soft and harsh. I wanted to take the compositions we created in class, which were derived from images with no significance to me, and give them meaning and feeling. I wanted to make people to feel something, and apply the images to this book in a way that was thoughtfully directed yet spotaneous, and evoke that was reminenscent of a love lost, a torn heart, or an identity crises that is both liberating and taxing.
