Celebrating our 49th year. MESSAGE FROM THE L ANGAR A COLLEGE FOUNDATION CHAIR

2019 was a milestone year for the Foundation. We continued to work with the College on our first-ever anniversary campaign, Beyond 49. We successfully celebrated Langara’s 49th year on 49th Avenue, strengthened our connection to our community, and raised much-needed funds to support the academic journey of our students. With the help of our Beyond 49 Ambassador team, we have met our Beyond 49 fundraising goal of $2.5M for student support; teaching and learning; and career readiness initiatives. Thanks to you, our valued donor community, we raised $1,149,956, marking the first time that the Foundation raised over $1M in a single year. We also continued to experience significant growth in the number of scholarships, bursaries, and other supports available to students, which allowed us to support 656 students and distribute $1,019,542 in financial aid. In addition, your donations also enhanced the Langara student experience through the support of programs, such as the Langara International Service Program (LIST). Your support provided 15 students with leadership and work integrated/volunteer training in Kenya in partnership with Me to We, a social enterprise organization providing economic opportunities for underprivileged communities. Read on for more stories about this program and the other amazing opportunities your generosity has helped create. The Foundation also played a key role in the College’s anniversary celebrations, putting a spotlight on the College’s deep roots in the community and its many accomplishments. On June 15, the campus celebrated the College’s 49th anniversary by hosting an epic campus-wide Community Day celebration. On November 6, we acknowledged the incredible contributions of our alumni and community leaders by holding the 49 Langarans Awards celebration. As an alumnus and a donor, I am honoured to be part of the College’s proud history and to help build a stronger future for Langara. As we look to the next 49 years, students need our support more than ever. I am continuously humbled by the generosity of you, our donors. It is a privilege to witness the impact that we have as a community, as we support Langara’s vision to be Canada’s pathway college. On behalf of the Foundation board and staff, our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support. We could not do this without you.

A giving community. PARTNERSHIP AND EMPLOYEE GIVING

The growth of the Foundation and supports for Langara students would not be possible without our employees and partners. Their continued generosity helps us to do more for our students. Each year, we are excited to create new connections and deepen friendships that allow us to ensure students have the best possible experience and learning opportunities. Below are a few highlights of annual giving initiatives that help fund specific departmental initiatives this year.

49 WOMEN IN SCIENCE The Langara 49 Women in Science Circle was established to actively address the gender imbalance in women working in the STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields, and help support and inspire young women interested in working in these fields. The goals of the Circle are to provide philanthropic and mentorship support to nurture female students, as they pursue their studies at Langara and beyond. “It’s an honour to support and encourage our young scientists. Their enthusiasm and hard work are inspiring,” said Gerda Krause, Co-founder 49Women in Science and Dean of Science, Langara College. Members of the Circle are all women with established careers in STEM. They lead by example, with each member pledging $490 (or more) per year to support up and coming female STEM students, and by sharing their skills and experience by hosting educational and networking events throughout the year. “This has been one of the most satisfying endeavours of my career: bringing together accomplished and aspiring women scientists,” said Margaret Heldman, Co-Founder of 49 Women in Science Circle and Associate Vice-President, Academic at Langara College. “It’s a win for everyone!”

Beyond 49. A CELEBR ATION OF 49 YEARS ON 49TH AVENUE

In October 2018, Langara College officially kicked off the anniversary of its 49th year on 49th Avenue and the 25th anniversary as an independent public post-secondary institution, with the Beyond 49 campaign. We’ve been celebrating, connecting, collaborating, and contributing ever since.

In 2019, we hosted two major events to celebrate and connect with Langara’s past, present, and future. On June 15, we held a campus-wide block party, celebrating our anniversary, with thousands of students, alumni, employees, retirees, and the community-at-large attending to help us mark the occasion. On November 6, we hosted the 49 Langarans Awards to celebrate and honour the amazing individuals who made, and continue to make Langara the amazing place it is today. Since the campaign’s launch, our Beyond 49 Ambassador team of 25 amazing individuals has worked tirelessly to raise the profile and increase support for student success. We are excited to share, that as of December 2019, we have achieved the goal of $2.5M set for the campaign in the areas of student supports, academic innovation and career readiness. In addition to continued support for scholarships and bursaries, other projects funded throughout this campaign have included: software supports for Counselling, Accessibility Services, Theatre Arts (Studio 58), and Psychology departments; leadership development for Langara’s student volunteer program VOLT and Langara International Service Program; purchase of solar panels and a sustainability Coop student position; and mental health first aid training for staff and a peer-to-peer student mentor programs.

CREATING GLOBAL CONNECTIONS Langara’s volunteer program VOLT went global this year, taking 14 Langarans (students and employees) on its first co-curricular international service trip as part of the Langara International Service Trip (LIST) program. To deliver the program, the College collaborated with the ME to WE organization, the first Canadian college to do so. The group travelled to the Massai Mara in Kenya, immersing themselves in the local culture by spending time with children, helping on a local farm, and completing a volunteer project. “The participants are more than travelers because they are there to learn about global issues, increase their awareness of themselves and others, and participate in change driven by the local community,” explained Maggie Stewart, Volunteer Program Coordinator, VOLT. “Volunteering internationally takes things to another level. It helps participants to develop as global citizens. In an increasingly connected world, the need for the next generation of professionals to be interculturally aware and agile is enormous.” The Foundation played a key role in providing funding support to students to help reduce the costs of the trip.

Supporting the future. SCHOL ARSHIPS AND BURSARIES

Scholarships and bursaries are a vital support for our students. As one of the most accessible post-secondary institutions in BC, Langara College makes education possible for everyone, and scholarships and bursaries make a real difference in our students' lives. The continued generosity of our donors assists Langara students on their educational journey. The financial supports available to students continued to grow in 2019 with over 872 scholarships and bursaries available to be awarded. In 2019, through the support of donors, the Foundation was privileged to provide more than $666,763 in financial assistance to 656 students in the form of scholarships and bursaries and created 30 new awards.

LEGACY OF CHAMPIONS A group of supporters and former student athletes, known as the Starting Line Up, got together to honour former head coach of the Langara Falcons’ Men’s Basketball team and proud Langara alumni, Kevin Hanson, by paying it forward and creating a new endowed scholarship in his name to support student athletes at Langara. During his time at Langara, Kevin led the Falcons’ to five BCCAA provincial championships and two CCAA national championships. He was a dedicated athlete, a Langara Outstanding Alumni award recipient, instructor, and coach. His legacy at the institution spans over 35 years and he continues as one of Canada’s most accomplished head basketball coaches, supporting and mentoring at UBC since 2000.

VANIT Y L AB PAYS IT FORWARD Natasha Bak, owner of The Vanity Lab, a leading medical aesthetics clinic, is passionate about paying it forward and giving back. During her time at Langara College she juggled full-time studies with the responsibilities of being a first-time single mother, all while working full time. She has never forgotten her struggles, nor the support she received in the form of a bursary in support of single mothers. After completing her Associate Degree in Science, she vowed that when she achieved success, she too would give back. Now as a successful businessperson, Natasha has established Vanity Lab Bursary Fund as a way of paying it forward and supporting other single mothers to achieve their dreams.

GIFTS FROM THE HEART Michael Kuttner, a retired but much beloved instructor and consummate storyteller, is a man who meets adversity with heart. As a testament to love, he has established two new awards to honour two beloved women in his life. The Eliza Kuttner Computer Science Scholarship was created in memory of his first wife Eliza Kuttner, who brought love to everyone she met. The second award the Jenice Mercado Bursary, was created for Students with Disability in honour of his life partner Jenice Mercado, who in spite of her mobility challenges, lived to find love and inspire others with her positivity. As Michael shared, “some things you can’t understand by thought alone.” These awards represent true gifts from the heart, ensuring a legacy our student that will live on in posterity.

Outstanding. 49 L ANGAR ANS

To mark the College’s 49th year on 49th Avenue, we reached out to the greater Langara community to help us identify and celebrate 49 incredible alumni, employees, or community champions who have had a significant impact on the institution, in their profession, and/or in the communities they serve. The community responded with over 180 nominations. With the help of a selection committee of Langara Emeriti, Outstanding Alumni Award recipients, and esteemed Langarans, these were distilled into a truly inspirational list of 49 visionaries, founders, and change-makers. On November 6, we were joined by 250 alumni, employees, retirees, and VIPs for the 49 Langarans Awards Celebration. From business leaders to theatre directors, community advocates to researchers and dedicated employees, the 49 Langarans represent the best of Langara College. They are part of our story, and we are proud to be a part of theirs.
