Academic Offerings Arts and Science University Transfer Programs

Langara College offers Arts and Science courses and programs in a variety of subject areas that can lead to associate degrees, diplomas and certificates. Most Arts and Science courses have transfer credit at universities in British Columbia and will transfer to other universities within Canada.

More than 30 career programs are currently offered at Langara, most leading to either a bachelor’s degree, two-year diploma or one‑year certificate. Many career programs are transferable to university.

Field Studies

Arts and Science programs with limited enrolment (LE) require that students apply directly to the program. Many LE programs have additional admission requirements.

These are one-semester programs, offered from time to time, that include travel and study. Exact format will vary with each program. Some recent examples of field studies programs include, Study in Europe, Study in Greece, Haida Gwaii Studies.

Limited Enrolment (LE) Programs

Langara College offers career programs developed with the co-operation of community-based

Co-operative Education Programs enable students to integrate academic studies with related,

practical work experience. Students alternate terms of classroom studies with terms of paid, full-time employment.

English Language Programs

STEP and LEAP are full-time intensive English and academic skills programs that prepare students (whose first language is not English) for college and university.

Continuing Studies

More than 500 courses and 40 certificate programs for personal and professional development are offered in Business, Creative & Applied Arts, Health & Human Services, Holistic Health, Computer Technology, and Languages. To view these non-credit offerings visit our website.

Degrees at Langara College Students have expressed strong interest in completing degrees at Langara College. After a thorough assessment of student and community needs, Langara College has expanded its offerings to include two new Bachelor’s Degree programs.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing

The four-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) Degree Program, recognized by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia, provides students with a comprehensive base of knowledge and skill. Upon completion of the program students are eligible to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Exam. The program welcomes students at different stages of their education— from beginning students, to transfer students, Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Psychiatric Nurses. The collaborative curriculum embodies a comprehensive and innovative program, reflecting the needs of our society. With a focus on caring and health promotion, students learn to work with

individuals, families, communities, and health professionals in various settings. The program assists students in developing compassion for people’s experience with health and healing.

knowledge and developing a portfolio of practical skills. Both comprehensive and current, courses cover everything from strategic management to financial management to e‑commerce.

Bachelor of Business Administration

The BBA program offers areas of concentration in Accounting, Business Management (optional specialization in International Business Management) and Marketing Management.

Students who have graduated from a two-year diploma in Accounting, Financial Management, Business Management, International Business Management or Marketing Management can continue their education with Langara College’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) Program. Changes to this: The two-year degree completion program builds on the foundation set during first and second year of the diploma program, while sharpening business

As a part of the program, BBA students will undertake a practicum and engage with profit and notfor-profit organizations to create new opportunities or solve existing business cases. With top quality educational training combined with practical hands‑on experience, BBA graduates will be well prepared to launch into their careers.

A New Chapter Langara College’s new 7,700 square meter, state-of-the-art Library/ Classroom building is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2007. “With 80 per cent of our credit students enrolled in academic arts and science programs, Langara’s present library is heavily used, and this new building will house the resources all our students need to make the most of their learning experience,” said College President Linda Holmes. “We also have an extremely successful Continuing Studies program, which brings thousands of students to our campus, and the facilities will serve them as well as those enrolled in career and academic programs.”

In 2005, Teeple Architects Inc. and Langara College were recognized with two prestigious awards—an Acknowledgement Award presented by the Holcim Foundation for sustainable construction; and the 2005 Award of Excellence from Canadian Architect Magazine for the building’s overall design vision using sustainable design principles.

The large-scale project, jointly funded by the Province and the College, includes the renovation of the old library, which will be converted to classrooms, computer labs, educational support areas, offices, and meeting space.

With its contemporary exterior and bright interior, the 3-storey building will be equipped with resources to fulfill students’ needs.

The project will help create more room for the 500 extra student spaces being added at Langara by 2010 as part of the Province’s expansion of the post‑secondary system.

Its strong architecture and energy efficient design has captured national and international attention.

ARTS & SCIENCE PROGRAMS Commerce & Business Studies

Provides a basis for entry into general business fields, and a business-oriented direction for mathematically-inclined students.

Commerce (LE*)

Corresponds to pre-commerce and first-year commerce at UBC. Most courses also transfer to other universities. First‑year students apply to the Arts and Science Program. Upon completion of first-term courses, students may apply to the Commerce transfer program.

CAREER PROGRAMS Accounting

Provides the education and practical skills for a career in accounting. This program focuses on attaining maximum course transferability to the CGA, CMA, and CA programs or to university. Graduates who meet the minimum academic entrance requirements will also be able to progress into the third year of Langara College’s BBA program.

Bachelor of Business Administration

A two-year degree completion program for students who have graduated from a two-year diploma program in one of the following: Accounting; Financial Management; Business Management; International Business Management; Marketing Management or other comparable programs. This flexible program can be completed on a part-time basis.

Provides knowledge of the history, culture, economies and business practices of the world’s major trading blocks. This is a rapidly growing discipline with many job opportunities. Management Information Systems

This program emphasizes the development of a strong business management foundation in addition to building skill sets pertaining to Information Systems Analysis required by industry.

Marketing Management

This practical program focuses on the principles and practices of marketing and sales, including a mix of business and academic courses that explore business decision-making and analysis. This is a distance-learning program that prepares students for careers in food service management with a focus on health care. ARTS & SCIENCE PROGRAMS Creative Writing

Associate of Arts Degree

The Associate Degree covers courses in writing poetry, stage plays, screenplays, short stories and non‑fiction prose.

CAREER PROGRAMS Display + Design

Prepares students for careers in the display and special event industries. Each term offers studio courses in 3‑dimensional design, interior design, graphic design, as well as business and academic courses.

Film Arts

An eight-month intensive, collaborative, and comprehensive program for students with previous experience and education wishing to work in the film industry as actors, writers, and/or directors. Choose from three streams of study: Acting (learn to market your talent), Writing (learn to write for TV and film and market proposals), and Directing (create a short video).

Fine Arts

A full-time visual arts program involving 35 to 40 hours per week of studio practice plus course work in art history and English. Most course credits are transferable to fine arts programs at post-secondary institutions in BC and Canada.

Journalism

This program prepares students for a career in journalism at community papers, dailies and magazines. Provides a basis for those who want to work in broadcast journalism. Students learn by working on the program’s weekly newspaper, The Voice.

Journalism

This is an accelerated program for those with extensive post-secondary backgrounds.

Professional Photo-Imaging

Prepares students for a variety of photography careers. Courses range from commercial photography to quality control of photographic processes. Assignments involve laboratory and studio work.

Publishing: Techniques & Technologies

Covers the print-based graphics and photo-intensive publishing sequences, as well as writing, editing and new media publishing, from concept to finished product. Provides comprehensive training for those who wish to enter the increasingly diversified publishing industry, or set up their own graphic design or electronic publishing business. Teaches new techniques for those already in the industry who wish to upgrade their skills.

Theatre Arts/Studio 58

One of the best theatre programs in Canada, Studio 58 provides practical, hands-on training for those looking for exciting and rewarding careers in professional theatre, film and television. Choose from two options: Acting (intensive classes, workshops, and participation in productions) or Production (intensive practical classes, workshops, and backstage participation in Studio 58 productions).

Primarily for those seeking to complete two years of university transfer course-work towards a degree in Human Kinetics, Physical Education, or Kinesiology.

Leisure Studies

Primarily for those seeking to complete two years of university transfer course-work towards a degree in Recreation, Leisure or Sport Studies.

CAREER PROGRAMS Bachelor of Science in Nursing

A four-year degree providing students with a comprehensive base of knowledge and skill to practice nursing in the health care system. Upon completion of the program, students will be eligible to write the Canadian Registered Nurse Exams.

Criminal Justice

A mix of university transfer courses in criminology and related arts, and skills-based non-transferable courses. Provides preparatory education and some training for those interested in a career in law enforcement, criminology or security.

Early Childhood Education

This 12-month, full-time program prepares students to work in a variety of licensed child care centres, preschools and private kindergartens. Graduates meet the requirements of the ECE registry.

Early Childhood Education: Special Education

Designed to prepare graduates of ECE basic programs to meet the requirements of the Community Care Facilities Branch’s Early Childhood Educator Special Education Credential. Offered part-time in the evenings. Continuous intake of applicants.

Education Assistant

This nine-month, certificate program prepares students to work in schools with children and adolescents with disabilities. Blends the study of theoretical principles with practical experience through course-work and three practicums. A Co-ordinated Diploma option is also available.

Nutrition & Food Service Management

Provides an understanding of historic and contemporary realities of Aboriginal people in Canada. The future is examined in terms of self-government, land claims and community development.

Arts (General)

Provides a well-rounded program of studies in arts.

Canadian Studies

Provides critical perspectives on major issues and controversies that mark contemporary Canada. Core courses draw from history, sociology, political science and English.

Classical Studies

Covers the history, art, literature and philosophy of the Greeks and Romans and provides perspective on how these societies still influence the world today.

Creative Writing

The Associate Degree covers courses in writing poetry, stage plays, screenplays, short stories and non‑fiction prose.

English

Covers courses in modern and historical English, American and Canadian literature and composition, theatre history, literature from a feminist perspective, interpersonal and business communications and linguistics.

Family Studies

The program’s interdisciplinary approach provides students with a variety of interpretations of the concept of family from the Social Sciences and Humanities. Core courses cover the sociological, psychological, philosophical, literary and historical perspectives on families in Canada and elsewhere.

Geography

The Associate Degree provides a strong background in geography, including physical, urban, economic and cultural geography as well as geographic techniques.

Latin American Studies

Includes a range of courses covering the geography, history, politics, economy, languages and cultures of Latin America. Prepares students for university studies of Latin America or related disciplines and provides the necessary background and knowledge to work in the region.

Pacific Rim Studies

Prepares students for second- or third-year of Asian Studies at UBC and/or related arts programs at most universities. Students are encouraged to learn a Pacific Rim language.

Women’s Studies

Introduces a diversity of perspectives on women’s histories, contemporary experiences, analyses and movements for change. Examines critical concepts for understanding women’s perspectives on their experiences personally, collectively, locally and globally.

ARTS & SCIENCE PROGRAMS Biology (General)

The Associate Degree covers courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Biology courses include cell biology, botany, ecology, genetics and zoology.

Biology (Molecular/Microbiology)

The Associate Degree covers courses in biology, geology, chemistry, mathematics and physics. Biology courses focus on cell biology, microbiology and genetics.

Biology (Ecology)

The Associate Degree covers courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics with a focus on ecosystems, population ecology and biodiversity.

Chemistry

The Associate Degree covers courses in analytical, organic and physical chemistry as well as mathematics, physics and biology.

Computer Science

The Associate Degree provides a strong foundation in computer science and transfers directly into third-year computer science at UBC, SFU and UVic. A university-transferable co-op work term is available.

Computer Studies (LE*)

A flexible two-year diploma that prepares students for a computing career or to transfer to university. Students can specialize in particular areas of computing including Information Systems, Database Administrator, Computer Engineer, Security Analyst, Network Administrator, Software Engineer & Project Manager, Software Entrepreneur, or Web Developer. A university-transferable co-op work term is available.

Engineering (LE*)

Corresponds to first-year engineering at UBC. Most courses also transfer to other universities. Students may apply to second-year UBC engineering after completing first year at Langara College.

Environmental Studies

Covers physical principles governing biosphere functions and explores environmental issues in depth. Includes studies in biology, chemistry, geography, environmental law, field techniques and contemporary issues.

Geography

The Associate Degree provides a strong background in geography, including physical, urban, economic and cultural geography as well as geographic techniques.

Human Kinetics

Primarily for those seeking to complete two years of university transfer course work towards a degree in Human Kinetics, Physical Education, or Kinesiology.

Physics

CAREER PROGRAMS Library & Information Technology

This program prepares students for technical duties in libraries and information centres including acquiring, organizing and retrieving information, usually under the supervision of a professional librarian. Flexible participation and online options are available.

Management Information Systems

Develops a strong business management foundation and builds the skills required by industry to become an Information Systems Analyst. A university-transferable co-op work term is available.

ARTS & SCIENCE PROGRAMS Aboriginal Studies (LE*)

Provides an understanding of historic and contemporary realities of Aboriginal people in Canada. The future is examined in terms of self-government, land claims and community development.

Applied Urban & Rural Planning (LE*)

Learn the basic elements and practices of planning as they relate to current planning issues. Combines university transfer courses with skills-based courses.

Canadian Studies

Provides critical perspectives on major issues and controversies that mark contemporary Canada. Core courses draw from history, sociology, political science and English.

Family Studies

The program’s interdisciplinary approach provides students with a variety of interpretations of the concept of family from the Social Sciences and Humanities. Core courses cover the sociological, psychological, philosophical, literary and historical perspectives on families in Canada and elsewhere.

Geography

The Associate Degree provides a strong background in geography, including physical, urban, economic and cultural geography as well as geographic techniques.

Latin American Studies

Covers the geography, history, politics, economy, languages and cultures of Latin America. Prepares students for more advanced study at university in Latin American Studies or related disciplines and provides the necessary background and knowledge for those planning to work in the region.

Pacific Rim Studies

Prepares students for second- or third-year of Asian Studies at UBC and/or related arts programs at most universities. Students are encouraged to learn a Pacific Rim language.

Peace & Conflict Studies

Considers the problems of human conflict and the means by which it can be constructively and non‑violently resolved.

Women’s Studies

Introduces a diversity of perspectives on women’s histories, contemporary experiences, analyses and movements for change. Examines critical concepts for understanding women’s perspectives on their experiences personally, collectively, locally and globally.

CAREER PROGRAMS Criminal Justice

A mix of university transfer courses in criminology and related arts, and skills-based non-transferable courses. Provides preparatory education and some training for those interested in a career in law enforcement, criminology or security.

Social Service Worker

This nine-month program provides a combination of academic, experiential and community-based learning, including two practicum placements. Focus is on the theory and practice of delivering basic social services. A Co‑ordinated Diploma option is also available.

Application Information Langara College welcomes applications from Canadian citizens, permanent residents and international students. All students must possess a level of English sufficient to support studies at the college level, as well as one of the following: n BC Grade 12 or equivalent n successful completion of the Adult Basic Education Program n Dean’s Admission (19 + years of age on the first day of the semester in which you wish to enrol)

Provisional Acceptance

If you are currently in Grade 12 and submit an application to the Arts and Science program at Langara College, you will be admitted on a provisional basis. Your admission will be confirmed as soon as we receive your final official transcript in July indicating that you have successfully completed Grade 12.

Career and LE Programs

Application to Career and Limited Enrolment (LE) programs may require specific supplements such as letters of reference, interviews and/or portfolios. Please refer to the College website for specific program requirements.

Concurrent Studies

BC secondary students entering or currently in Grade 12 who have demonstrated academic excellence may apply for limited admission to university transfer or open career courses while attending secondary school. For more information, please contact the Registrar’s Office.

Diagnostic tests in English (LPI, LET), Mathematics/Statistics, Chemistry and/or Physics may be required for admission into some programs and courses. Tests should be written well before registration. Check the College website for more information.

Transfer Credit

To obtain credit for courses taken at another post-secondary institution, complete a Transfer Credit Request Form and submit it with supporting official transcripts. Apply for transfer credit at least two months before the semester begins.

International Students

Langara College starts accepting applications 11 months prior to the start of each semester.

Diagnostic Tests

Complete and submit the form, along with: n Official transcripts from secondary school and all post‑secondary institutions you have attended. n Any other documentation required for your application (e.g., placement tests, career program requirements, etc.).
