PROGRAM INFORMATION
Wildlife photographer. Paul Colangelo, Photography Alumnus After completing a business degree at Wilfrid Laurier University in Ontario, Paul Colangelo received a camera as a graduation gift from his parents. He became instantly obsessed with it. Within months he quit his job and moved across Canada to attend Langara’s highly-recommended photography program. “Langara was a great fit for me because it was in that sweet spot between four-year degree programs that concentrate on a lot of theory, and the shorter 12-month programs, which I feel are not long enough. And for the type of photography I do – environmental/ conservation photography – there is no better city to start in than Vancouver.“ For Paul, the two most valuable parts of the program were learning the fundamentals of photography and the internships, particularly working for National Geographic wildlife photographer, Frans Lanting. “The most difficult part is getting over that first hump – producing that first body of work that attracts attention and begins to establish your visual voice. Langara provided the fundamental knowledge of photography paired with the real world experience through the internships that allowed me to pursue what I’m passionate about in a productive way. Frans is a legend in the field, and the opportunity to watch him work was transformative. It’s something you can’t learn in a classroom.” Currently, Paul is working as a documentary photographer focused on environmental issues and wildlife.

Developing global skills. Robert Fougner, Arts and Science (Commerce) Alumnus Langara recruited Robert from high school to play basketball for the Falcons. He enjoyed the small class sizes and found Langara to be much less expensive than university. While at Langara, Robert earned a Diploma in Commerce and felt very prepared for UBC where he completed his Bachelor of Commerce degree. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the foundation that I got from Langara. As a student athlete, I was able to pick my course schedule to work around playing basketball. I took courses in the summer term to spread the load, and tried a variety of subjects which helped me find my niche in marketing.” Robert soon discovered his skills were in demand globally. He worked in New Zealand, travelled the globe working for a travel agency, and finally returned to BC where he landed a job at Hootsuite Media Inc. “This is my dream job. Hootsuite is a great company – everyone here is very driven. I knew I wanted to be in sales, but was determined to sell something I believe in. Selling social media protocols to institutions of higher education is something I can get behind.”

Investigating trends. Majd Agha, Bioinformatics Student Majd Agha grew up in Damascus, Syria, where he studied Computer Science in high school. He wanted to pursue post-secondary education, but when civil war broke out in Syria, he came to BC on his own as part of Canada’s commitment to resettle Syrian refugees. He was soon impressed by Canada’s educational system, and decided to look into his options here for studying computer science or chemistry. He discovered Langara’s Bioinformatics program, which combined Computer Science with Chemistry, Math, and Biology, and realized this was exactly the program for him. “I was thrilled to know that Bioinformatics has a career path leading to medicine, and most importantly could lead to the field of research on curing cancers, a horrible disease I have had experience with personally. That made me so excited to pursue this field even more! I chose Langara because of the programs and services that it offers to its student and because Langara is an excellent and unique educational institution that is going to help me continue to pursue my educational path.”
Read more of Majd’s story at thisislangara.ca
After Majd earns his diploma he plans to transfer to UBC to earn a bachelor degree. Ultimately he plans to work in a lab investigating trends in disease, drug development, and discovery through DNA analysis.

Wild about archaeology. Rudy Reimer/Yumks, Anthropology Langara’s Archaeology Field School was the first step towards a successful career in archaeology for Rudy Reimer. As a member of the Squamish Nation community, Rudy’s own background and experience prepared him for the field of archaeology. “I found out about Langara’s Archaeology Field School and signed up for the summer term. We learned hands-on excavation and interpersonal skills on-site in Fort Langley and it was then I realized that the archaeology bug had bit me!” As a professor of First Nations studies and Archaeology at SFU, Rudy became the host of a new documentary series, “Wild Archaeology,” which takes the audience through an educational and cultural exchange to active research projects, archaeological sites, and First Nations cultural heritage sites across the country.

A helping hand. Samantha Watson, Education Assistant Alumna Samantha Watson discovered at an early age that she had a gift for working with others who needed a helping hand. As a Special Education Assistant in the BC school system, Sam is helping special-needs students transition from high school into a training program or the workplace. Contracting meningitis as a premature baby, Sam’s hearing loss and joint issues gave her the insight and compassionate edge that she used to tap into the needs of those who couldn’t always speak for themselves. “In school, the teachers loved me because I would spend time with the students who couldn’t or wouldn’t communicate normally. I learned sign language from the Special Education Assistants that were assigned to my classmates, and would use it to help explain their lessons to them. I always knew how to put a smile on their faces, by finding out what was important to them and connecting with them on their level. My teachers would often place me beside these classmates because they knew I’d help them to communicate.”
Read more of Samantha’s story at thisislangara.ca
When she learned about the Education Assistant Program at Langara, she thought it was a perfect fit. After graduation, she began working right away in the New Westminster School District and as an Instructional Facilitator at Douglas College, before accepting a position with the Maple Ridge School District. As a behavioural interventionist, Samantha is using her education to help guide her kids to exhibit more socially-accepted behaviours, and in some cases, to learn how to advocate for themselves.

Giving back. Rebecca Struivig De Groot, Nursing Alumna The Langara Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree program opened up a variety of career possibilities to Rebecca. The program provided her with a well-rounded nursing education, and a greater understanding of the range in quality of care available in different countries in the world. After graduation, Rebecca went to Nepal to volunteer at a hospital where she taught nurses about the importance of infection control, hand hygiene, and advocating for patients. “The earthquake happened three weeks into my trip. I helped out where I could in the field hospital, but it was difficult due to the language barrier and various cultural differences. I decided to raise money from home through a gofundme account called ‘Dal Bhat for Nepal’. We funded a medical team that travelled to hard hit areas, provided food and medical supplies to two villages, rebuilt homes and an orphanage, and sponsored a child’s education.

I am so thankful to have had the experience to be able to give back in the way I did.”
Enabling success. Olivia Rasulov, Nursing Alumna Olivia was attracted to Langara’s Nursing degree program because of its reputation, but once there discovered that the vast number of clinical placement hours and international opportunities provided unparalleled hands-on experience. Olivia wondered if her hearing impairment would hold her back, but Langara’s Disability Services were there to advocate on her behalf, connecting her with the necessary resources and specialized equipment, such as an amplified stethoscope, that enabled her to be successful in the program. “I could not complete this program successfully without Disability Services. They enabled me to have an individual instructor who provided me with one-on-one guidance in the clinical practicum settings – something that I did not expect to happen prior to coming to this program.”
