A SENSE OF COMMUNITY. Alexandra Lainfiesta, Theatre Arts at Studio 58 Alumna Alexandra began dancing in Guatemala at the age of 13. Her dream was to pursue the performing arts, and she came to this country on her own in pursuit of that dream, but found there were struggles to overcome when she first arrived. She found her home in the theatre community; they became her family and provided her with much needed support. After graduation, Alexandra started the Glorian MacDewellis Award to help support other international students in the theatre arts program. “The courage and sacrifices one makes to leave your home country, language, and culture to pursue the ever-fluctuating career of theatre deserves a huge acknowledgement and accolade. I take my hat off to the two recipients of this award so far,” said Alexandra. “I received from Studio 58 the most well-rounded training I could have asked for. Catherine Kallin, Physics Alumna, Outstanding Alumni Award recipient Catherine Kallin is a theoretical physicist, and the Canada Research Chair in Quantum Materials Theory at McMaster University. Currently she is on a fellowship visiting Stanford University where she is working in the area of topological superconductivity – working with materials that conduct electricity with no loss of energy. “When I started at Langara, I was not only neutral, but I had been turned off of physics. My instructor introduced me to how interesting physics is, what a wonderful way to look at the world and use mathematics to understand the world around us.” Catherine has recently been named a Simons Fellow in Theoretical Physics, the only Canadian among 14 North Americans in 2016 to receive this prestigious honour.

IT’S ALL WORTH IT. Marjorie Dornan, Bachelor of Science in Nursing student Marjorie came to the decision to become a nurse later in life. She wanted to help people in the health care field, but wasn’t sure of her direction. “I spent quite some time in the hospital with my mother as a teenager, and when I was thinking about going back to school I remembered what a huge impact nurses had on me during that time. I knew then that nursing was what I wanted to do.” “Post-secondary education has been stressful, but you push yourself as hard as you can to be successful. I lost both my parents at a young age and have been supporting myself financially since I was 18. I knew I would have to work extra hard, but when I get to the end of this degree, I know how proud of myself I will feel, and all the struggles I have faced will be worth it.” Read more of Marjorie's story at www.thisislangara.ca.
FROM LANGARA TO THE NFL. Arthur Tolhurst, Human Kinetics Alumnus Sports were always Arthur’s passion, and football a defining force in his life. After spending a year at Langara, Arthur transferred to UBC, embarking on a journey that led him to become a Strength and Conditioning Assistant with the NFL’s Cleveland Browns. “I really liked sports and the science of movement. Human Kinetics was a way to incorporate both. I was able to relate a lot of my coursework to the sports I participated in. I use the knowledge I learned at Langara everyday from general anatomy to different coaching principles.”

Despite a tough beginning, feeling homesick, juggling a part-time job, full-time school, and caring for his family – Navdeep persevered. His goal was to complete his education as soon as possible and find a good job. He took a co-op placement and used his experience from a previous job to implement a paperless environment at his new co-op company office. “The PDD courses helped me build my résumé and cover letter that were tailored for Canadian employers. We practiced doing interviews. My boss (from my co-op placement) … hired me full-time. Now, I take care of three different companies (Padtech Global Sourcing, Kiari Consulting, and Painted Picture) as bookkeeper and office administrator. My co-op job has become my permanent job.” Read more of Navdeep's story at www.thisislangara.ca.

We’re growing with you. L ANGAR A AND SUSTAINABILIT Y
At Langara College, we are deeply committed to being part of a sustainable society. We understand that the world's resources are finite and that our choices, both big and small, impact our world and future generations. As part of our vision, we continue to upgrade existing infrastructure with an eye to architectural excellence and innovative sustainable design. SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION All of our new buildings on campus are built to LEED® Gold certification standards and boast special green features with the goals of improving energy efficiency, and reducing the impact of our campus on the environment, while enhancing the health and well-being of the Langara community. Green building features include: • The use of local and recycled LEED® approved materials • Enhanced air quality • Better lighting/daylight exposure • Improved thermal comfort • Improved energy efficiency • Spaces that enhance social interaction • Geothermal heating and cooling • Electric vehicle (EV) charging stations in the L and T Buildings • Solar shading
Buildings on campus that have achieved LEED® certification include the Langara Students’ Union, the Library and Classroom Building, the C Building, and the Science and Technology (T) Building.
OUR SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS Langara continues to improve our environmental impact as well by: • Reducing energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions • Offering programs and courses on environmental and sustainability issues • Conducting alternative energy research projects • Upgrading to more energy-efficient information technology equipment • Upgrading lighting systems to LED • Encouraging use of alternative transportation – public transit, bicycles, carpooling, electric vehicles (EV) • Having recycling initiatives for near-zero-waste management (such as compostable cutlery, plates, etc.) • Installing solar panels
Learn more about Langara's sustainability initiatives by visiting www.langara.ca/sustainability. You can also listen to Langara’s sustainability efforts in an Audio Tour available in T Building.

C Building and Students’ Union Building • Voluntary seismic upgrade of C Building to extend building lifespan and improve safety. By doing so we recycled the existing concrete structure and saved it from the landfill; we also saved the materials required to build a new concrete structure • Geo-exchange Energy Transfer System and the highly energy-efficient Thermenex heat recovery mechanical system reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves energy • Low VOC paint with reduced levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) • Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) reflective roof to reflect the sun’s energy and reduce the building’s cooling costs
Library/Classroom Building • Concrete mixed with fly ash (by-product of power plants created during coal consumption) to increase resistance to chemical corrosion, decrease landfill pollution, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions • Four wind towers pull air upward through the building for natural ventilation • Undulating concrete roof increases pulling power of the wind towers by increasing wind velocity • Geo-exchange Energy Transfer System and the highly energy-efficient Thermenex heat recovery mechanical system reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves energy • Rain water harvesting • Waterless urinals and low flow fixtures
Science & Technology Building • Low-flow fume hoods with adjustable sashes to reduce energy usage • Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) reflective roof to reflect the sun’s energy and reduce the building’s cooling costs • Solar shading to prevent the sun’s heat from warming the building • Highly energy-efficient Thermenex heat recovery mechanical system reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves energy • Energy efficient building envelope
