On behalf of the Musqueam people, the Musqueam Band Council welcomes the graduates, their families and friends to snəeyəɬ lelə, Langara College, on our unceded traditional territory. Our lands have long been places of learning, and these convocation ceremonies take place on what was once a Musqueam village. We have honoured that connection by giving the College a name in our language, snəeyəɬ lelə, which means house of teachings. The word snəeyəɬ references the advice given to a child to build their character and guide them in to adulthood. We trust that your time at Langara has helped to do just that, and prepare you all for successful futures. Our connection with Langara is also reflected in these ceremonies in a number of ways. The river grass at the base of the College’s coat of arms, printed on every diploma and certificate, refers to Musqueam, our name meaning people of the river grass. The platform party is led in to convocation hall by a Musqueam drummer, and the regalia worn by Langara’s President incorporates traditional Musqueam blanket patterns and wolves, as designed by renowned Musqueam artist Debra Sparrow. We value our continued partnership with Langara and the opportunity to share a small part of our culture with you on this important day. Congratulations to all the graduates, including the growing number of First Nations students who will cross the platform in these ceremonies. Your accomplishment reflects your hard work and talent, and we hope that you continue to contribute to Langara, your communities, and society after you graduate. Welcome to Langara College’s 51st Annual Convocation Ceremonies. Academic Regalia It is traditional for graduands, faculty, staff, and distinguished guests to wear academic regalia at convocation ceremonies. Academic regalia has its history in the academic costumes of 14th and 15th century universities in England, particularly Oxford and Cambridge.

The style of academic regalia reflects the type of credential and the institution that awards it. At Langara College, the President wears our presidential regalia, a green gown with black and gold accents. In 2015 the President’s regalia was altered by acclaimed Musqueam artist, Debra Sparrow, to include traditional Musqueam blanket patterns and two wolves, a nod to President Trotter’s Musqueam name, Takaya, which means wolf. Emeriti Awards CELEBR ATING DISTINGUISHED SERVICE
Langara is proud to announce the conferral of the 2017 Emeritus Awards. Emeritus is an honourary title given to retired faculty or professional staff to recognize their outstanding contribution to teaching, service, or leadership in an organization.
ROBERT DYKSTR A – FACULT Y EMERITUS, JOURNALISM Rob Dykstra dedicated much of his professional life to teaching generations of journalists - more than 1,000 in total. He retired in 2016 after 32 years of service at Langara as instructor, coordinator, and chair of the Langara Journalism Program, as well as chair of the Creative Arts Division. He oversaw the introduction of new courses, launched the Langara Journalism Review, and taught almost every course in the Journalism Program curriculum. Dykstra created opportunities to connect students with industry professionals; and facilitated student internships and entry-level jobs. Notably, he is a recipient of the Langara Leadership Excellence Award (2005-2006), and more recently, the Bill Good Award, in recognition for his significant contribution to the field of journalism.
GW YNETH LEWIS – FACULT Y EMERITA, CL ASSICAL STUDIES Gwyneth Lewis developed Langara classical studies into the rigorous and respected program of study it is today. This program, unique among two-year institutions, has helped students prepare for and launch into careers in diverse fields. Throughout her career in the Department of History, Latin, and Political Science, and the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies, Lewis exhibited an extraordinary dedication to her students, the program, the field of classical studies, and to Langara. Lewis changed the lives of countless students, helping them view history and the world from new perspectives. As a scholar, Lewis gave lectures at the Langara Lecture Series, the Classical Association of Canada, Pharos, and was involved in the leadership of several prominent classical associations, including the Vancouver chapter of the Archaeological Institute of America. She continues to pursue research in Greek epigraphy and Greek and Latin influence on English.
PETER PRONTZOS – FACULT Y EMERITUS, POLITICAL SCIENCE AND INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES Peter Prontzos’ contributions to the College span over 25 years and include teaching in both political science and interdisciplinary studies. He created new courses in political science, latin american studies, and peace and conflict studies, and contributed to an international education program in Greece, as well as educational tours to Greece with Langara’s Department of Continuing Studies. Prontzos served as coordinator of political science, and sat on the hiring committees for both the economics and journalism departments. He was a founding member of the “Transforming Langara Committee,” which promoted sustainability at the College. Prontzos was a perennial speaker at the Langara Community Lecture Series for two decades and presented at the Langara Employee Development Centre professional development seminars. Since retiring in 2015, he continues to lead tours to Greece with Continuing Studies.
THEODORE RYNIAK – FACULT Y EMERITUS, PHYSICS Born in Poland, and immigrating to Canada in 1928, Ryniak has an accomplished and varied career. After joining the Canadian Air Force as a wireless mechanic during the war, Ryniak attended U.B.C., completing his Masters of Education. Initially teaching elementary school, moving to high school and then adult education, Ryniak has been an inspiring physics teacher. He is an innovator who deeply influenced the high school physics curriculum, co‑writing a core text used in the curriculum. He was an inaugural member of Vancouver City College, which later became Langara College and as Department Head, Ryniak continuously upgraded the physics lab program, while designing courses for photography and journalism.

JASPREET BUNWAIT, CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL SERVICE WORKER LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S MEDAL AND L ANGAR A COLLEGE LIEUTENANT GOVERNOR’S MEDAL RECIPIENT AWARD Jaspreet has been recognized with the Lieutenant Governor’s Medal and corresponding Langara Award. Over the years, Jaspreet has worked with at risk youth, newcomers to Canada, and people with disabilities and mental illness. The Certificate in Social Service Worker has prepared her to critically apply herself and advocate for the disadvantaged populations in our society. She credits her passionate and helpful instructors as one of the biggest factors to her success at Langara, and could not have accomplished this level of success without her supportive and encouraging family.
NINA CHEN, DIPLOMA IN LIBR ARY AND INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY L ANGAR A COLLEGE GR ADUATE EXCELLENCE AWARD (CAREER) Nina is graduating with the Diploma in Library and Information Technology with the highest cumulative grade point average from a two-year career program at Langara College. Nina credits the practicum portion of the program as a great way to make contacts, try different fields, put class learning to use, and credits the program for giving her all of the tools she needed to succeed. She says she will always appreciate the quality of instruction, enthusiasm, and genuine desire of instructors to help students learn.
DANIEL CROUGH, BACHELOR OF BUSINESS ADMINISTR ATION IN MARKETING MANAGEMENT PRESIDENT’S MEDAL FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNIT Y SERVICE During his time at Langara, Daniel was an active and engaged student, demonstrating academic excellence and community service. He worked with student groups like the Langara Environmental Club and The Collective; he completed a co-op designation, and participated in the first ever Langara China Field Study trip. In addition to his on-campus activities, Daniel has been an active volunteer in his community. Since completing his program, he has started a community outreach program that focuses on supporting non-profits and charities with their digital marketing efforts.

ELYSHA FONG, ASSOCIATE OF ARTS DEGREE IN PSYCHOLOGY GOVERNOR GENER AL’S COLLEGIATE BRONZE MEDAL & L ANGAR A COLLEGE GR ADUATE EXCELLENCE AWARD (ARTS & SCIENCE) Elysha is recognized for her academic excellence and is graduating with the highest cumulative grade point average from a two‑year program. Her studies have given her a new perspective, and her sense of balance is inspiring; she understands that you cannot give your best effort if you are sick or unhappy or sleep-deprived. She advises it is important to nourish yourself, replenish your body, enjoy your passion, and embrace challenge.
JESSICA LOWE, CERTIFICATE IN SOCIAL SERVICE WORKER L ANGAR A COLLEGE GR ADUATE EXCELLENCE AWARD (CERTIFICATE) Jessica has successfully completed the Certificate in Social Service Worker with the highest cumulative grade point average from a certificate program. Jessica feels the program has allowed her to move towards a complete change of career, in a practical way. Jessica’s goal is to work in the field of Victim Services and/or helping those suffering from traumatic loss, grief, and bereavement.
KELTIE POST, BACHELOR OF RECREATION MANAGEMENT PRESIDENT’S MEDAL FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNIT Y SERVICE While volunteering in her community and working part-time, Keltie has graduated with a Bachelor of Recreation Management Degree, achieving academic excellence and community service. She acknowledges the dedicated and passionate instructors in the program for helping her broaden her knowledge and awareness of recreation. With her dog Sadie at her side, Keltie has volunteered at the Fraser Valley Cancer Agency and St. John’s Ambulance, amongst other volunteer experiences.
KIM SMART, BACHELOR OF SCIENCE IN NURSING PRESIDENT’S MEDAL FOR ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNIT Y SERVICE Kim has achieved both academic excellence and community service, spending many hours over the last twenty years volunteering in the community. She has donated her time to Baby Wellness Clinics, the Vancouver Canucks Children’s Hospice, the Union Gospel Mission, Harvest Project, and the North Vancouver Neighborhood House, among others. Throughout this, Kim says that she has continually been amazed that giving has always, ironically, given back to her more than she could have ever imagined.
R ACHEL VENNER, BACHELOR OF RECREATION MANAGEMENT L ANGAR A COLLEGE GR ADUATE EXCELLENCE AWARD (BACHELOR’S DEGREE) Rachel has completed her Degree with the highest cumulative grade point average from students graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree. Rachel believes the skills she has gained in the program, particularly critical thinking and analysis, will serve her well in her career and everyday life. Lane Trotter
Tung Chan is the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, and has been appointed an Honorary Captain in the Royal Canadian Navy. He has been a Councillor and a Deputy Mayor of the City of Vancouver, manager of a Royal Bank branch, Vice President of the TD Bank Group, and District VP of TD Canada Trust where he had operational and strategic responsibilities for two overseas branches (Hong Kong and Taiwan) and 17 domestic branches. Chan has received the Queen Elizabeth Golden Jubilee Medal, the Diamond Jubilee Medal, and is a member of the Order of British Columbia. A volunteer, philanthropist and community leader, Chan has served on the boards of numerous civic, cultural, business, and educational organizations.

Columbia before enrolling in the University of Saskatchewan’s Program of Legal Studies for Native Peoples. Robinson worked for the Ministry of the Attorney General of Ontario with the Windsor Crown Attorney’s Office (Criminal Division). He was a temporary articled student with the Peter A. Allard School of Law’s Indigenous Community Legal Clinic at UBC, and was recognized for his leadership activities by the Canadian Bar Association’s Aboriginal Lawyers’ Forum. He received the Carole T. Corcoran award for high academic standing and reconciliatory leadership. Robinson articled at the prestigious criminal law firm Johnson Doyle Sugarman and Ferguson before being called to the British Columbia Bar in May 2017. over 30 years of experience as a registered nurse and has held many leadership roles in healthcare, recreation, and in the volunteer sector. After graduating from the Langara Diploma in Nursing program in 1984, she went on to complete her Bachelors of Science in Nursing and Master of Nursing from the University of Victoria. Straight is the recipient of the Excellence in Nursing Education Award from the College of Registered Nurses of BC, and the Canadian Governor General Queen’s Royal Golden Jubilee Medal for her volunteer contributions. She is a lifelong learner, having recently completed her Co-Active Coaching Certificate from the Coaches Training Institute, California.

Quantum Materials Theory at McMaster University. She joined the McMaster faculty in 1986 after receiving her PhD in Physics from Harvard and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Kavli Institute for Theoretical Physics in Santa Barbara. She has spent sabbaticals at Bell Labs, Cornell, UBC, and Stanford. Kallin has held the Sloan, Steacie, and Guggenheim Fellowships and is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research. Her field of study is novel electron behaviours in materials. Kallin has recently been named a Simons Fellow in Theoretical Physics, the only Canadian among 14 North Americans in 2016 to receive this prestigious honour. She is a recipient of Langara’s 2016 Outstanding Alumni Award.

Langara’s Coat of Arms Langara’s official coat of arms was unveiled at a campus ceremony in January 2015 by His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada. Drawing inspiration from the Langara community, the new coat of arms has been designed to reflect Langara’s values of learning and discovery, and includes elements of the surrounding community. It is used to represent the College at ceremonial occasions. The coat of arms features a strong X shape, symbolizing the college as a crossroads where students from varied backgrounds meet and then follow various life paths. The book indicates that Langara is an educational body, and the cherry blossoms are a feature of Vancouver in the spring. The pantheon represents imagination, achievement and the natural world. The use of gold stars on green refers to the arms of the Spanish admiral Juan de Langara y Huarte, for whom the College was named. The mariner’s compass also alludes to the early Spanish explorers, as well as the college’s role in guiding its students. The falcon is the mascot of the college’s intercollegiate sports teams. The binary code on their collars (meaning “L” and “C” for Langara College) honours the college’s commitment to innovation in instructional information technology. The base of river grass represents the location of the college’s campus in the traditional territory of the Musqueam Nation, “Musqueam” meaning “people of the river grass”. In January of 2016 the Musqueam gave Langara the name snəw ̓eyəɬ lelə which means house of teachings. The Latin phrase at the base means “Knowledge is freedom”.
