JILL SHEWFELT | SUCCESS STORY For many, changing careers means finding new employment. But for Jill Shewfelt, enrolment in the Continuing Studies Advanced Project Management program enabled her to change roles within her company, the Whistler 2010 Sport Legacies Society. In the spring of 2013, Jill moved from being a Coordinator to a Project Manager. Jill managed two projects for the Whistler Sliding Centre venue, including the implementation of safety audit recommendations, and the summer bobsleigh program. With a background in payroll and bookkeeping, Jill was looking to take on more responsibility with her employer. Without the formal education, she was afraid that she wouldn’t be considered for future opportunities. “I really wanted to become more valuable to the organization that I worked for, and managing projects was a way in which I could move into other facets of the business.” Jill knew that once she had the tools, processes, and education, she would prove capable of achieving project objectives and organizational goals given the right opportunity. Taking on school and full-time work is challenging, but resuming her education was an empowering decision for Jill. “I felt that it was an investment in myself and I knew each time I entered the classroom, my employer and I would benefit,” she says. Langara presents options to take the program in-class or online, and on a course-by-course basis, adding flexibility for those who need it. Project management continues to inspire her work at the Whistler-based organization. “I enjoy progression, implementation, and improvement. You really get to see the outcome of your deliverables – there is a start and there is an end. You get to see where you started from, what you did to get there, evaluate the challenges along the way, and finally celebrate your achievements.”

KATIE INKSTER REGISTERED MASSAGE THERAPY STUDENT

“It’s an intimidating amount of knowledge, but I thrive on being in a program and knowing exactly what I’m working towards.”

KATIE INKSTER | SUCCESS STORY Massage therapy has always been something I’ve been interested in. On all my sports teams, my teammates have come to me for a massage, but it wasn’t until I came to Langara that I considered it as a career. As I looked further into the program, I knew it was a great fit. Unfortunately, evening classes coincided with soccer practice, and something that seemed so perfect suddenly turned into a huge dilemma. I was heartbroken. But when my coach told me he would still love to have me on the team – despite me missing every practice – I was elated. My classmates come from such diverse backgrounds; one studied economics and worked in a bank but wants to change careers, another used to be a chef. They’re all especially supportive in helping me catch up and share any coursework I’ve missed. We take advantage of breaks and lunch to study together and tutor each other. Likewise, my Falcons teammates push me to focus on studying, plus, I get to practice my massage techniques on them. Soccer and RMT just go hand-in-hand. One thing I learned from athletics that has carried over into my academics is perseverance. It’s challenging being in such an intense program. And the last two weeks of finals are like the last ten minutes of a game in overtime; studying is most important and procrastination isn’t an option. Luckily, I learned good time management skills in high school and I’m used to having every hour slotted into something. It’s an intimidating amount of knowledge, but I thrive on being in a program and knowing exactly what I’m working towards. Katie helped lead the Langara Falcons to a silver medal at the 2014 PACWEST Championships, and was named the tournament’s Top Defender.

DAVID CONGRAM | SUCCESS STORY For many, early retirement means more time to relax, travel, and pursue other passions. But for David Congram, it meant an opportunity to help out his wife. Since she was still working, David suggested to his wife that he assume the cooking; a suggestion met with gales of laughter. Spurred by his commitment to learn and his relative inexperience in the kitchen, he made the decision to take cooking courses through Langara CS at VSB. “I haven’t always been interested in cooking, but shows like Iron Chef and Top Chef peaked my interest and I wondered what training they had. So when I decided to learn to cook, I did some research and found Langara CS at VSB offered evening and weekend classes.” David registered, taking five cooking courses and building his culinary skills. In particular, he recalls several highlights from instructors Chefs Clarence Ma and Helena Kopelow. “Chef Ma taught us how to make several dishes such as ‘Spicy Chicken with Vegetable’ and ‘Cod with Tomato Sauce.’ The techniques I learned allowed me to experiment with other dishes like ‘Pork with Crispy Potato’ and ‘Sauteed Beef and Tomato’.” “Chef Kopelow’s teaching technique is clear and concise. She vocalizes her intentions then demonstrates the technique each class. She’s always there to answer questions, and her shortcuts are amazing and simple. She taught me great cooking methods that gave me the confidence to make dishes such as schnitzel and tourtiere.” David calls his experience with Langara CS at VSB the start of “a great culinary adventure.” With each successive course, he was inspired to cook often, better, and with more variety. “The lessons I’ve learned from these chefs will last a lifetime. Now I can read a recipe and know I can reproduce it with excellent results.”

EDUCATIONAL TRAVEL

“Wayne obviously is an amazing talent as a street photographer, with a proven ability to portray a story with images. His ability as a teacher and communicator is at the same level. Not only can he move students toward creating images that are more technically proficient, he works hard on helping photographers find the intent and direction for their art. Where Wayne also excels is using a group dynamic to move students forward, drawing on the group to critique and encourage all. - Noel MacDonald

PHOTOGRAPHY ON THIS PAGE SHOT BY WAYNE KAULBACH

Educational Travel WAYNE KAULBACH | INSTRUCTOR Wayne Kaulbach fell in love with India on his first visit in 1986, and since then, he’s kept returning for more. As the instructor of the upcoming India Photography Tour, Wayne’s affinity for the country can be heard in his voice and of course, seen in his work. And having just returned from a 9-month round-the-world trip, he’s eager to share his knowledge and passion for travel and street photography.

FALL 2015 TOURS WINTER / SPRING PHOTOGRAPHY TOURS 2016 ART & ARCHITECTURE TOURS 2016

“I often tell people that India is the closest thing on Earth we have to visiting another planet. It’s a visual wonderland. If you like to photograph interesting people and places, you will not be disappointed. It’s like no other country.” That’s great news for aspiring photographers. The intimate and engaging photography tour – which features handson shooting, group critiquing, and valuable one-on-one time with the instructor – is sure to open the eyes (and heart and soul) to the magical allure of India; a spell Wayne believes will be cast through this carefully planned itinerary.

ECO & CULTURAL TOURS 2016

“For the tour, we’ll concentrate on Rajasthan, the crown jewel of India’s states and territories. We’ll start in the state’s most romantic city, Udaipur, affectionately called ‘the Venice of the East’ for its enchanting palaces and gardens,” he animates. “We’ll visit Jodhpur, known as the ‘Blue City’ for its vivid blue-painted houses that surround the legendary Mehrangarh Fort, as well as, Jaipur, the capital and the largest city in the state. The tour then shifts east to Uttar Pradesh and concludes in Agra, home of the architectural marbled majesty known as the Taj Mahal.” As the co-owner of the award winning Skylight Images and an ongoing contributor to Photo Life Magazine, it’s easy to understand why Wayne is so excited to lead this tour to India.

World Languages & ESL HELOISE CORDEIRO | LEAP ALUMNA Heloise Cordeiro came to Vancouver from Brazil in 2013 with the intention of working on her English skills for a few months before returning home to her position as a researcher. Two years later, she’s graduated from Langara’s distinguished LEAP (Langara English for Academic Purposes) Program and is well on her way to achieving a Canadian university degree. “I didn’t know any English, at all,” she said. “I started LEAP at Level 1, and I graduated from Level 8. My instructors were so supportive when I first arrived. It was tough to move to a new city, a new climate, but they helped me along the way.” Heloise credits the natural progression of the intensive LEAP program, which uses an integrated approach to speaking, listening, reading, and writing English, for her steady improvement and ability to successfully master the language. “The first couple levels were vocabulary. Then in Level 4 we learned to write essays, and in Level 7 we learned to debate and discuss in academic terms. It was important to finish Level 8 because it focused on presentation skills.” Sometimes newcomers are reluctant to let go of their native languages or customs. But Heloise cautions against not engaging with others. “You need to be open to meeting all kinds of people, because Canada is so multicultural. It doesn’t mean you have to change who you are.” After completing the LEAP program, Heloise made the smooth transition into Langara’s university transfer program and is currently studying English, biology, and chemistry. “If you want to transfer to a Canadian university, LEAP is the right program. It’s intensive because each level is only seven weeks, but it was exactly what I was looking for.”

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Computer Technology SHELLY MOFFAT | SUCCESS STORY In April 2000, Shelly Moffat suddenly found herself the single mother of two young children. After the unexpected passing of her husband, life was understandably challenging, At age 30, believing that it was never too late to start, Shelly began her post secondary studies as a mature student at Langara College - taking one course at a time. In 2014, after transferring to UBC (and several years since her first class), Shelly earned her degree in psychology. “I am proud of me,” said Shelly. “It took thirteen years and I wanted to give up so many times, but I did it and I’m proud of this accomplishment.” Incredibly, Shelly was also battling inflammatory arthritis, anxiety, and depression; invisible disabilities that continue to affect her physically, cognitively, and emotionally. Nonetheless, her experience at Langara was incredible. “They believed in me when I didn’t,” she shared as she recalled her inspirational professors and how they encouraged her to work towards her undergraduate degree. By the time she graduated, Shelly hadn’t worked full-time in a few years and needed to upgrade her skills. She was thrilled to learn about the Continuing Studies partnership with the children’s hospice Canuck Place that provides volunteers like her with opportunities for free tuition. “I signed up for an Excel course that was excellent. I hope to take a few more computer courses so that I can enter the job market with relevant computer training. The people at Canuck Place are compassionate and strong enough to be undaunted by tears. I have learned so much about life in this special place.” In the near future, Shelly plans on earning a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology.

JOELLA CABALU | SUCCESS STORY In 2011, filmmaker and Langara alum, Toshimi Ono, released Oh! Sushi: From the Land of the BC Roll with Love, a documentary film that explored the culture of sushi, its uncharted Vancouver roots, and its reverence in Japan. However as a UBC art history major and administrative assistant, Joella Cabalu found more than just insightful subject matter in the film. Unexpectedly, she was inspired to go back to school. “I was always interested in films. In fact, I created my first short film when I was fifteen years old. It was encouraging to see another Asian woman go back to school and be successful. After seeing Toshimi, I felt compelled to research the program further.” Unafraid of the career change, Joella enrolled in the Documentary Film Production Program; a full-time, 16-week intensive course load where each classmate wrote, directed, and edited three short films. “We spent such an intense amount of time together that we cultivated trust in one another. With a small class size, there were more opportunities to get to know each other. Having them as sounding boards challenged my ideas and ultimately pushed me to create work I was proud of.” It showed. Joella’s graduating short film, StandStill, premièred at the 2014 Vancouver Queer Film Festival and screened at six other film festivals across Canada. The film has been used in the UBC Philippine Studies Series, MOSAIC, and the Out in Schools program. Following its success, Joella leveraged her 10-minute short film into an hour-long documentary for broadcast television with Canada’s premier LGBT network, OUTtv. Selected as one of eight emerging filmmakers across Canada to participate in the Hot Docs 2015 Shaw Media Diverse Voices documentary training program, Joella’s career is flourishing.

Sustainable Communities QUEENIE HEWITT | STUDENT Queenie Hewitt has a green thumb, figuratively speaking of course, and rightfully so. As an employee of A Rocha Canada – an international organization committed to scientific research, environmental education, community-based conservation projects, and sustainable agriculture – she’s often at sites meeting with groups looking to start new community gardens. Serving as the organization’s Community Garden Mobilizer, Queenie helps groups create green spaces that produce nutritious food and serve as respites to the city’s concrete laden environments. She envisions an ecological shift in how society manages urban landscapes that is healthier for our land and waters. “I want people to connect to nature in our urban environments in new ways, captivated by wonder,” she said. “I’m inspired to create well-planned, healthy gardens that encourage people to spend more time outside, to appreciate the beauty of plants, and to motivate them to care for our environment. I want their spaces to be more than just vegetable boxes.” Fueled by her inspiration, in 2014 Queenie turned to Langara Continuing Studies to enhance her skillset, enrolling in the Organic Landscape Management program. There she found like-minded individuals who shared her appreciation for ecological and functional garden spaces. Queenie learned how ecological garden design saves clients money and time through long-term planning. “I really appreciate the content of the courses that are based on new research from plant biology to soil life contributing to healthy plants and gardens. Now I have the confidence to create a small business and get paid for what I’m passionate about - to further people’s enjoyment of plants in the urban environment while providing ecological benefits to our city landscape.”
