PAT H WAYS TO ACCO U N T I N G Langara College offers a range of flexible options for individuals interested in starting a career in accounting. Our Continuing Studies (CS) programs provide graduates with the tools needed to achieve rewarding careers in accounting and finance management. For those interested in seeking designation, all courses are recognized by the Chartered Professional Accountants of BC (CPABC). Students can choose from three programs that best suit their experience, lifestyle, and future career goals. With courses offered in the evenings and on weekends, students can complete the program while continuing to work. The recently introduced CS Diploma in Advanced Accounting teaches students how to effectively communicate, manage and lead in today’s business environment. It integrates accounting with general business and information technology tools, allowing students to maximize their contribution to an organization’s success. Graduates of the CS diploma program who hold a bachelor’s degree will fulfill all requirements to qualify for the CPA Professional Education Program. Those without a degree have the option to complete a Bachelor of Commerce program through Thompson Rivers University. Graduates of the CS Diploma in Advanced Accounting program will be qualified for positions related to accounting, financial management, taxation, auditing, finance, and business consulting. Students can also choose to undertake the Professional Accounting and Advanced Accounting Certificate programs. Those who aren’t seeking a full CPA designation but are still interested in a career in accounting and finance can complete the Professional Accounting Certificate, which consists of 14 courses. The Advanced Accounting Certificate, which consists of six courses, is ideal for students who already have some introductory and intermediate accounting education but still need to complete advanced-level courses. As with other Continuing Studies programs, no application or admission is required to start, so students do not need to declare which credential they are working towards. Students can register for courses as long as they meet the prerequisites, and upon completion of all the program requirements, they can submit an application for graduation for the program they’ve completed. View the table on page 5 and choose the accounting program that’s best for you. www.langara.ca/csaccounting

P R I S CI L A YÁ Ñ E Z | SU CC ESS S TO RY Priscila Yáñez was an aspiring realtor in Mexico looking for something specific: an established, robust, in-classroom real estate program in Vancouver that would admit international students. After calling a number of colleges and universities from her home in Mexico with no success, she fortunately found the program she was looking for at Langara. Priscila understood the importance of a good education and knew that she needed to be in-class instead of online to get the most out of the experience. And in such an extensive industry, she believed the quality of education shouldn’t get lost in the quantity of it. But with few post-secondary institutions in the province able to meet her needs, she remained optimistic that Langara believed the same thing. It was a conversation with program coordinator John Neuls that gave Priscila an indication she had found much more than she expected. After explaining her situation and the type of education she wanted, John created a customized yet challenging course plan, and since then, he’s been supportive every step of the way. “He’s the reason I’m in Canada,” she shared. “He’s been a big help from day one, and with the volume of students he has, it’s amazing how he can really care for you as an individual. I owe him everything.” Priscila is also having a wonderful learning experience thanks to her teachers, particularly law instructor Manijeh Moieni, as well as Dennis Ragauskas, who has helped her understand the math needed in real estate with thoughtful consideration and patience. “The biggest impact on me so far has been my instructors. In my years of studying in Mexico and Spain, I’ve never had such amazing teachers who personally care for their students and push them to do their best. I really feel blessed.” Priscila’s efforts are certainly paying off. “I got 97% on the Trading Services (Sales) Licensing examination, the highest mark at the UBC exam centre this year!” Once she receives her license in November, Priscila believes the knowledge she’s gained will give her an advantage in the industry. Inspired by her supportive parents and hardworking grandfather, she has her sights set on becoming one of the top realtors in BC, and eventually in Canada, with aspirations of starting her own real estate company.

B R I T T N E Y R A N D | SU CC ESS S TO RY Brittney Rand is one half of Mu, a nascent electronic duo that recently followed up its 2014 self-titled debut with the acclaimed II in early 2016. Together with Francesca Belcourt, the group’s breezy, introspective, synth-rich productions have earned it a groundswell of support from both fans and industry voices alike. Brittney initially enrolled in Langara’s Digital Music Production (DMP) program to become a scoring artist. The program – which is designed for producers and composers to work in recordings, film, TV, gaming, advertising, and multimedia – was a chance for her to develop technical and theoretical skills, advance her production style, and learn to effectively use different digital audio workstations. But as she progressed through the curriculum, Brittney became fully immersed in performance art and live music. It’s where her focus has been since graduating, and it has produced standout music. Mu began as a project while Brittney was at Langara and the education she received inevitably helped refine her skill. “The DMP program gave me confidence and affirmation that I was capable,” she shared. “It helped me solidify ideas I had been formulating for some time.” As Mu continued to grow, so did Brittney’s abilities as a producer, sound designer, and scoring artist, resulting in an intrepid means of creating music. Now the duo’s musical ideas are reinforced with a stronger grasp of theory and technical skill. “When we’re producing Mu songs, we don’t approach the process with a specific sound we want to project; instead it’s based out of intuition. It’s what feels right for what songs, themes, etc,” she says. “We choose sounds that envelop the track, sounds we attach to, interesting rhythmic patterns to excite the vocal lines - that’s usually the groundwork of a song.“ When asked about her musical influences, Brittney compares them to her approach to production. “There are plenty of records that have influenced me as a person, as albums tend to make their way into your life when you need them. My tastes are about as disjointed as my creating process, so perhaps it’s the musical variety that influences my creative process the most.” Mu’s EP, II, is out now on Boompa Records. www.soundsofmu.com

HAIDA GWAII TOUR

Educational Travel JA M ES B A L D E R S TO N | I N S T RU C TO R Seven years ago, James ‘Jim’ Balderston led his first workshop with Langara Educational Travel - a photography tour on a cruise from Vancouver to Alaska. With a love for the BC coastline and remote northern spaces, as well as a fascination with its geography and culture, the workshop turned out to be a perfect way for Jim to kick off his start with the program. He’s been helping students capture memorable moments on photography tours ever since. From Alaska to recent trips to the Yukon, Jim shares his knowledge of photography and his passion for the landscape, and in doing so creates unforgettable experiences. “Our travel groups spent a great deal of time ondeck on the Alaskan cruise. It was incredible how the weather and the light would change ten times a day,” he recalls. “The inside passage was spectacular.” From one of the Yukon Tours, Jim fondly remembers a sense of togetherness and gratification after seeing the quality of work produced by the group. “I particularly remember the camaraderie around the campfire, the clear night sky, watching the Milky Way as we waited for the Aurora Borealis to appear. It was very humbling to be in a setting like that and sharing it with others.” Amid the inspiring moments and stunning landscapes, Jim remains mindful of his goal as a photography instructor and pairs it with a teaching style perfectly suited for the tour. “I like to encourage students to find their own voice photographically and seek out subjects that are meaningful to them. Everybody has something to say and my role is to help them get there.” Jim’s next tour is in August when he’ll be leading a small group on the Haida Gwaii Eco-Photography Tour, a region he refers to as a living museum. “It’s a fascinating place culturally, historically, and geographically. The ocean, the fact that it’s remote, the unique flora and fauna – it’s often thought of as the Galapagos of the North,” he says. “By coming to their own understanding of Haida Gwaii using photography, I want students to gain a deeper connection with our country, its diverse cultures, and its landscapes.” Sounds memorable indeed. Jim is the program coordinator of the Continuing Studies Photography Program. He has been teaching for 15 years, been an instructor for eight years, and is also a printer, business owner, and fine art photographer. www.jimbalderston.com

World Languages & ESL H Y U N J I N L I M | I N S T RU C TO R Hyun Jin Lim never thought he would be teaching Korean as a second language. Although he had been a high school teacher in Seoul, Korea, for eleven years, it wasn’t until he went on a backpacking trip to Australia that he realized there was a growing admiration and appreciation for the Korean culture. On that trip, Hyun met countless people from around the world, and many of them expressed interest in his home country. He was pleasantly surprised at the prevalence of Korean culture, and it was this realization that motivated him to get his Korean teachers certificate and teach the language. Currently, Hyun teaches Korean culture courses at Langara, particularly Korean Drama. Through his experience and teaching style, he’s learned that the use of dramas and movies is an effective learning technique to develop conversational speaking, listening, reading, and writing. “I like to introduce trendy Korean culture,” he says. “It makes it easy for students to access the Korean language that way.” Although many students come to Hyun’s class with little to no experience, there are times when some of them have already been exposed to – and in some cases, already submersed in – the culture. Several students seek job opportunities in Korea, some are interested in participating in an exchange program, and oftentimes, there are those who want to enrich their Korean cultural experiences. “I remember one of my students. She started to learn Korean because she liked (Korean pop music) K-Pop,” Hyun recalls. “One day, she told me she was going to a concert of her favorite K-Pop band, and when she came back to class after the show, she was thrilled that she was able to communicate with the audience in Korean.” With the growing popularity of Korean culture, Hyun recognizes the importance of constantly developing and upgrading his teaching methods in order to adequately answer his students’ needs. As a teacher who takes pride in his heritage and finds success in his students’ successes, he wouldn’t have it any other way.
Hyun Jin Lim holds a master’s degree in education and is an instructor with Langara Continuing Studies’ World Languages & Culture program.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Computer Technology A N D R E A O L I V E R I | SU CC ESS S TO RY In January 2009, just four months after she came to Canada from Santiago, Chile, Andrea Oliveri found a job as a receptionist. She enjoyed the new position, but after a while, it made her realize she needed more skills to succeed in this line of work. Her subsequent position at a law firm was even more challenging, and it wasn’t long before she realized that she was missing the computer and administration skills needed to excel in her role. Quitting was not an option, so Andrea decided to perform as best she could, work hard, and try to develop herself whenever possible. During this period, Andrea was committed to improving her grasp of the English language and studied to enhance her ability to communicate effectively. While her reading and writing continued to progress, Andrea didn’t have the opportunity to enhance her computer skillset, an area she knew she needed to improve. In 2015, while on Employment Insurance, Andrea visited a WorkBC Employment Services Center to explore her job options. She met with a case manager, attended workshops, and actively searched for jobs, specifically administrative positions that were familiar to her and aligned with her work experience. But most of the job openings required the advanced computer skills she didn’t have. Andrea planned to fill this skills gap. Through a career exploration program for funded training, she discovered Langara’s Computer Technology program, subsequently contacting coordinator Raymond Chow, who helped her plan her continuing education. “It was encouraging to talk to him. He supported my search for certification with patience and kindness, and eliminated my fear of having a lack of computer skills.” Recalling her experience at Langara, Andrea found it challenging to balance her studies with a busy personal life, but she credits her teachers for helping her finish the program. “Teachers were always open for questions and explanations, and made learning fun. I found it incredible to see them so welcoming, encouraging, and motivated about what they were teaching, even when it was at the end of the evening. Now that I have my certification, my family and I are open to many more possibilities.” Andrea Oliveri currently works for Langara College Continuing Studies.

“It’s critical to develop selfawareness, to get the tools needed to help prevent the onset of PTSD, and to learn resilience techniques that will help keep us grounded and balanced.”
DAV I D G I L L I S | SU CC ESS S TO RY As a volunteer firefighter for Squamish Fire Rescue, David Gillis had responded to cardiac arrest calls before, but this one was noticeably different. Shortly after David arrived on the scene, it hit him like a truck; a severe reaction caused by a strong odour. It triggered a memory from a traumatic event he had experienced six years prior and the emotions overwhelmed him. But as a first responder, David fought to keep them in check, continued to perform his emergency protocols, and maintained his composure. “That’s what many first responders do. We react to situations and stay strong because people are depending on us.” It was an experience he never had before and one he would never forget. David is now more aware of what he experienced back on that emergency call in 2013. “I wasn’t prepared. I just did what I usually do and told myself to suck it up, deal with it, and move on.” It’s common for first responders to fight back these emotions, David says. “Many of us don’t know how to deal with repeated exposure to trauma. We’re not equipped, instead we keep busy, avoid the problem, or deny it exists as we slowly start to exhibit PTSD tendencies.” It’s taken David a while to develop this awareness. Over the years, he’s had to deal with many traumatic events from stressful work environments, distressing childhood memories, and other life experiences. “PTSD is complex,” he explains. “Traumatic events compound over time. It’s critical to develop self-awareness, to get the tools needed to help prevent the onset of PTSD, and to learn resilience techniques that will help keep us grounded and balanced.” It was Langara’s Strategic Resilience for First Responders Program that finally gave David the education he needed to help deal with his PTSD. “This program is different because it’s holistic,” he says. “It doesn’t just focus on healing the mind; it also addresses what stress does to your entire body. It mixes Western neuroscience with Eastern philosophies and helps develop resilience techniques you can use on the job. And because the program takes place over an extended period, it allows for self-reflection and inner change, unlike shorter workshops.” David believes the program is not only for first responders with PTSD, it’s also for people susceptible to developing it or interested in entering a field with high exposure to trauma. When asked about what he’s learned, he remarks, “I’ve learned how to observe. Instead of reacting, I now have the ability to take a step back, recognize what’s happening to me, and use helpful coping techniques to regulate my nervous system. The way this program has impacted me has been life changing.” David Gillis is a husband, a parent, and a grandparent. He serves as a volunteer lieutenant firefighter with Squamish Fire Rescue. He is a graduate and instructor in the program.

A N D R E W PAV L E | I N S T RU C TO R Andrew Pavle developed a curiosity for creating things himself at an early age. The born and raised Vancouverite – who grew up in a neighborhood where kids walked to the corner store, roamed around on bicycles, and played outside all day – was naturally drawn to exploring the possibilities of materials for as long as he could remember. There were always bikes lying around, and as the youngest of eleven, Andrew used to take them apart and build new ones that suited him. It’s this do-it-yourself mentality that drives his creativity and fuels his passion to empower his students. Before he obtained his joinery certification, Andrew worked for many years as a professional chef. While in the field, he discovered a love for mentoring cooks and teaching others. Seeing students succeed became meaningful, and once he left the profession and found woodworking, it was only a matter of time before he became an instructor. Andrew credits school and supportive mentors for fostering his creativity as a curious kid. In grade five, he remembers a wood project in class that inspired him to go home and build a toy bi-plane. At age 12, he helped a close friend build a soapbox go-cart with rack and pinion steering. In high school, a coffee table he made in his woodworking course gave him a sense of pride and plenty of motivation to keep creating. He also attributes his grasp of math – critical to woodworking – to learning how to play cribbage with his siblings, and poker and blackjack from his neighbor. “Having such enjoyable life opportunities with patient, open-minded mentors really showed me that learning is engaging at all ages. If I saw something neat, I was really motivated to make it, build it, or cook it on my own. I still do that. I still look at things and think ‘I can do that’. That’s why teaching woodworking to others is so important to me. Creating something beautiful and practical is a really empowering feeling. That’s a feeling that needs to be shared.”
Andrew is a woodworking instructor with Langara CS at VSB. He is a husband and father of two young children and enjoys spending time with family and friends.
