A R L E N E L A M B E R T – I N S T RU C TO R Time is at a premium for Arlene Lambert. In addition to working full-time as the Director of Employment and Training with Metis Nation BC, the Hope, BC-born multitasker also has a 20 year-old son who serves in the Canadian Armed Forces. Moreover, as a child growing up on a farm in South Surrey “with more animals around her than most people have socks”, Arlene also organizes an outdoor gathering for owners of dogs with various behavioural issues every second Sunday. She has always made time for anything that was important to her. It’s why Arlene also became an instructor with Langara Continuing Studies. Arlene teaches various classes in the Professional Bookkeeping Program as well as a finance course for the Real Estate/Property Management Program. It was a conversation with a friend that encouraged her to start teaching at Langara. She had always wanted to pass on her education and industry knowledge. Even while earning her CGA designation, she would tell people she was becoming an accountant so that she could teach. Becoming an instructor fulfilled a life purpose. ”It’s incredibly rewarding to watch people come into the program unsure and nervous then see them complete it with confidence and a sense of accomplishment. There’s no feeling like it,” she says. “I remember one student who told me at the beginning of class that she didn’t think she would ever get her certificate because she was ‘the stupid one of the family.’ It broke my heart, so I told her to prove everyone wrong. She’s now in the CPA program!” Throughout her teaching career, students have expressed an appreciation for Arlene’s extensive industry experience as well as her personable instructional style. She credits strong business mentors and instructors for inspiring her to become a mentor herself and influencing her style of teaching. “The courses I enjoyed, flourished in, and remember most are those that had instructors who told stories I could relate to as a student to teach theory,” she recalls. “I will never forget my macroeconomics instructor in the CGA program who said “I have given you notes so you can now listen to me talk” - I remember more from that course than any other course I ever took.” When asked what she wants her students to learn from her classes, she replies “Why. I want the students to know the ‘why’ of what they do. Often we become mechanical and don’t know the purpose behind the process. I also want the students to learn that there is no perfect way of learning – it’s a journey with multiple paths that are never ending. This program and industry may not be your destination but rather a starting point.”

K R I S T E L M A N L I G -M A R F I L | SU CC ESS S TO RY It was early Tuesday evening when Kristel Manlig-Marfil got to Langara’s main campus for her cover story photo shoot. She was bundled up for the chilly February night in a long black winter coat and came with her husband, Ralph, directly from her job in Burnaby. It had already been a long day for them, especially for Kristel who was five months pregnant, but these types of days weren’t uncommon for the soft-spoken couple. They’ve long been on a journey of perseverance and purpose, and Langara was playing a part in helping them reach their destination. In 2015, Kristel and Ralph migrated to Vancouver via the Canadian Federal Skilled Worker immigration program hoping to improve their personal and professional lives. Both had earned bachelor’s degrees in Electronics and Communications Engineering in the Philippines, but because of timing and industry standards, they were ineligible to work as engineers in BC. They found themselves in a career transition. Determined to work as an engineer in BC, Kristel and Ralph joined the Skills Connect employment program, which helped them, move into careers matching their experience and background. “They connected us with employers and introduced us to other programs that would enhance our skills in accordance with Canada’s system. That’s where we found out about Continuing Studies’ Introduction to Engineering in BC (IEBC) Program,” she shares. Kristel didn’t hesitate to register. Aside from Langara’s established reputation, she found the IEBC program wellbalanced. She liked that it taught industry specific skills and strong awareness of Canadian workplace culture. “It was a very good introduction for engineer immigrants like us,” she remarks. “The teachers are all accomplished, industry-specific professionals. They provide valuable insights from their experiences, what specific steps to take, and they push us to find the courage to pursue the job that suits our credentials. The practicum was perfect for connecting students and employers, and I was able to enhance my credentials according to Canadian standards.” While Kristel’s journey is far from over, she remains thankful for the resources she’s been able to access in order to get her to where she is. “The IEBC program helped me gain industry specific skills and gave an overview of how to transition myself in the engineering field here in BC. We also felt a great sense of relief that the Government of Canada was so supportive of new immigrants.” “Naturally, I was frustrated when I discovered I’d have to take a few steps back in my career. Most of the skilled immigrants (specifically engineers) we know have taken survival jobs and ended up staying there permanently,” she says. “It’s common, but there are also success stories of people who have taken actions to get back into their respective fields. They’re inspiring.” With her drive, hard work, and determination, there’s little doubt Kristel is also on her way to becoming one of them. Kristel Anne Marie Manlig-Marfil works at Kodak as an Optical Mechanical Technician. She is expecting her baby boy in June.

TAYM A Z S A B A – SU CCESS S TO RY Taymaz Saba was raised in an artistic family and started learning how to play the piano at the age of six. The early experience was invaluable for the Tehran-born artist - it marked the beginning of a musical career that has seen him develop his craft in countries around the world including Iran, India, and France. Since childhood, Taymaz has amassed a wealth of musical knowledge through practice, work, and education. He most recently completed Langara Continuing Studies’ Digital Music Production full-time program. It was a close friend who told Taymaz about the music programs offered at Langara. “I enjoyed the entire program,” he shared. “The most valuable thing for me was my instructor’s intentions and different approaches. I learned many techniques, especially in audio engineering.” Coming from a classical background, Taymaz was challenged by the equipment and programs used in digital music production, but this also allowed him to explore his creativity and take his art in different directions. “I was always composing in classical form using different musical theory techniques. One day, I decided to do a house remix of a small choir that blew the class away. No one expected that. It was so much fun.” Taymaz is a composer, conductor, singer, and sound artist who finds inspiration in classical composers like Vivaldi and Beethoven, film composers like Nino Rota and Ennio Morricone, and from the sounds of nature. His sophisticated musical taste undoubtedly comes from exposure to art and music at such a young age. While this is a credit to his parents, Taymaz is also grateful to his older sister, his girlfriend Sahra, and his circle of friends for their support throughout his career. “I owe everything to my family and friends,” he expresses. “My dad has always been my number one artist, my mom has helped me with everything, and my older sister has always been there for me. A special mention also goes to Ann Marie Fleming and Maryam Najafi for being very supportive of my work.” Taymaz’ musical works are products of his lifelong education and personal experience. He has traveled the world studying Iranian, Indian, African, and Brazilian music traditions and believes that this cultural knowledge, coupled with an educational background in music history, theory, and musicality among other things, equates to a valuable set of skills ideal for producing remarkable work. “Music is very personal to me. It’s emotional, and I create music based on my emotions,” he says. “But I also know that I have to consciously think about what I’m doing when I’m arranging, mixing, or recording music in order to bring the sound to life.” Taymaz Saba has worked on over 30 films including Ann Marie Fleming’s festival favorite, ‘Window Horses’ – his first film as the full score composer. He is nominated for a 2017 Canadian Screening Award for Achievement in Music – Original Score. www.taymazsaba.com

Donna Lucas was 58 when she sold her business in 2008. For years, she was an industrious business owner who ran a door and window company that had both a retail store and a manufacturing facility. It was a busy time, but once the business was sold, Donna found herself with plenty of extra time on her hands. It wasn’t long before she realized how much the world had changed while she was running her company. In her newly found free time, Donna often caught herself recounting nostalgic stories to her family that began “When I was young…” But sounding like a retiree didn’t suit her; she had too much left to experience to be saying that. “Being retired, I needed to travel, not to kick back and drink margaritas by the pool,” she shared. “Instead, I needed motivation to discover new visual, tactical, emotional, and cultural experiences.” Fittingly, Donna took up photography and travel. Once she heard about Langara’s Educational Travel Programs, Donna realized they were exactly what she was looking for. They were perfect for her travelling style; she wanted fun, adventure, and education, but preferred to not worry about the logistical side of travel. She loved the format the College provided, so much so that she has been on three different Langara-led tours in the last three years. “My tour to the Galapagos Islands in 2013 topped all expectations. We were actively part of the adventure. Everyone was hiking and swimming with Mother Nature at her best. I had so many life changing moments,” she says. “The Yukon Tour in 2016 was very good. I loved Whitehorse. Capturing the Northern Lights in the early morning was well worth it, and the trees had also changed colour making the day trips absolutely stunning.” While recalling the India Tour in 2016, Donna remembers the time she tagged along with tour guide and acclaimed photographer, Wayne Kaulbach, who wanted to locate someone in a busy market he had photographed on a previous trip. “[Wayne] went to the market kiosk where he had once found his subject but it was the subject’s 70-year-old son who was running it that day. However the son was thrilled to take us home to visit his father. So we made our way through several narrow openings and into a tiny courtyard, and sure enough, there was his 90-year-old dad. Wayne presented him with a large portrait; he was wearing the exact same clothes he wore in the photo! The family was delighted. It was so fun.” In addition to her memorable experiences, Donna remains friends with fellow tour-goers, loves that the programs are tax deductible, and realizes that photography and travel have changed her perspective on life. “Stepping away from years of working indoors to discover new visuals through photography has made me feel born again.” She plans on joining another Langara tour in 2018.

World Languages & ESL J U L I E AU B I N – SU CC ESS S TO RY Twenty years ago when Julie Aubin moved to Vancouver for a job opportunity, she ran into a problem that would eventually turn her into a business owner. Julie loved matcha tea and drank it instead of the coffee that was ubiquitous in the city. Unfortunately at the time, affordable, high-quality organic Japanese matcha tea was hard to find in Vancouver so Julie decided to import her favourite varieties for personal use. Subsequently, she started ordering more for her family, friends, and extended network, and as demand grew in the city, what was once a small operation developed into a thriving business, Zen Organics. Before Zen Organics, Julie’s work experience was considerably different. For well over a decade, she worked with at-risk youth in a few cities around the world. In Vancouver, she worked with youth who struggled with addiction. In Soweto, South Africa, she worked at a derelict orphanage and was responsible for developing a food program that was both nutritious and sustainable. While different in scope, her work experiences developed a strong belief in sustainability, health, and wellness, and formed the core values of Zen Organics. The one constant Julie experienced throughout her journey as a business owner was learning how to speak and write in English. Originally from Montreal, the Quebecois native grew up speaking French but remained fascinated with the English language. In the lead up to moving to Vancouver and working in Soweto, it became even more important for her to learn how to communicate fluently in English and furthermore, to understand English cultural norms. However, learning on the job was limiting for Julie. “I found English challenging to learn,” she shared, “and my ability to speak became much stronger than my ability to write. But as a business owner, the need to respond to letters and emails was high. I knew that to improve my writing required a more formal learning environment. I consulted a business advisor on improving my English writing skills and she recommended the Langara English Proficiency Program (LEPP).” Since joining LEPP a year and a half ago, the program has proved valuable to Julie. “The flexibility of the program is essential because it helps someone like me who works all day attend evening classes without interrupting my business,” she remarks. “It’s also valuable because it promotes community integration and capacity building for individuals who have lots to offer but are unable to when language is a persistent barrier.” When asked about her class experience with LEPP, Julie fondly recalls the great learning environment her instructors established from the onset. “Instructors make learning English enjoyable and fun, most classes are small so you get more attention from teachers, you get to know your classmates, and there’s laughter. It helps relieve the stress of learning a new language.”

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

She trained underskilled volunteers and employees on essential skills at Vancouver Community College, and facilitated mental health workshops for clients on topics such as stress management, assertiveness, and conflict resolution. “My career has given me valuable experience working with marginalized populations and I’ve gained a solid background in community development.” She also developed her own career coaching and ESL tutoring business, Nu Way Coaching and Training Services. Along with the classroom delivery, she developed the curriculum for hundreds of students in a wide variety of programs at multiple organizations in the non-profit, private, and public sectors including Coast Mental Health and the Downtown Eastside Women’s Centre. Caroline aspires to eventually transition from classroom facilitation to instructional design, specifically online training. It’s why she decided to join Langara’s new Instructional Design Certificate Program. “The program is designed for instructors or those who have worked in education. It provides an understanding of adult learning and technological applications in order to deliver engaging learning modules.” So far, Caroline’s experience in the program has been memorable. The learning environment is friendly, supportive, and at times creative. Her teacher is engaging and has an effective instructional style that encourages class discussions and group work. “The other students are friendly and keen on learning, and we have such a great time contributing our ideas and opinions as well as sharing our own teaching experiences and design background.” Once completed, Caroline hopes to work as an instructional designer for a post-secondary institution or for a private company. She then aims to start a related business. “My goal is to incorporate and contrast my own teaching methodology and curriculum design skills with the instructional design frameworks and evaluation theories learned in class,” she shares. “One day, I’d like to work as a freelance instructional designer or consultant and market my packages to clients locally, nationally, and internationally.” Caroline Johnston is a trained coach and facilitator with a BA in Linguistics/Psychology and has certificates in Cross-Cultural Counseling and EQ-i. She is a student in the Instructional Design Certificate Program.

J E N N I F E R M I S E W I C H – SU CC ESS S TO RY Jennifer Misewich enjoys seeing dogs explore the sights and sounds of the city on their daily walks. She loves watching them survey their environment, investigate smells, meet other dogs, and generally enjoy their lives. It’s this heightened sense of awareness and appreciation for pets that spurred the homegrown entrepreneur to pursue her dream of starting her business, Stellar Pet Care. While setting up her company, Jennifer discovered Langara’s Professional Dog Walker Program. It covered a multitude of key subjects perfect for her new business including dog behaviour, pet first aid, animal legislation, and dog handling. For her, the educational experience was invaluable from both a personal and professional standpoint. “It makes me happy to know that this program enables us to better care for and understand our canine friends. The courses I found most fascinating focused on typical and difficult dog behaviours, but I enjoyed everything about the program.“ Stellar Pet Care offers dog walking, overnight vacation care for small dogs, and cat sitting in downtown Vancouver. It’s part of a challenging industry with plenty of competition around town. Business-wise, Jennifer notes that completing the program has made her business more trustworthy and has given it a boost in clientele. “It gives you more credibility. I’ve noticed an increase in clients after being able to add this certification to my website. I’m grateful to Langara for offering this program.” Jennifer chose Langara College because of “its reputation and the opportunity to learn from industry professionals such as an animal behaviourist and welfare scientist.” The extensive curriculum is necessary for a demanding occupation that is often seen as just a fun job. “I have people telling me that I’m doing their dream job and asking to work for me. But professional dog walking is hard work. It takes a lot of physical stamina in all types of conditions. It takes constant attention to ensure the safety of the dogs – anything can happen in a split second and it’s important to be aware.” Ultimately, it all comes down to running a business taking care of animals, and Jennifer is thrilled to be doing something she loves for a living. “These daily walks are important to the physical and mental well being of dogs. It’s a highlight of their day,” she shares. “It’s a highlight for me as well.” Jennifer was born and raised in the lower mainland. She has lived in downtown Vancouver for over a decade with her 12-year-old terrier-poodle, Tibby.

“I like to keep my classes laid back and foster dialogue. Students add so much to a classroom. We can learn better when we’re not anxious or frustrated. It’s important to be relaxed as technology can be frustrating at times.” – James Neufeld, Instructor

JA M ES N EU F E L D – I N S T RU C TO R In his first office job in Vancouver, James Neufeld regularly found himself unexpectedly helping out colleagues with their computer problems. While it wasn’t part of his job description, James discovered that troubleshooting computer issues came easy to him, and moreover, that he was good at teaching his peers how to fix them. It was then that James first became an educator, which ultimately led him to become an instructor with Langara Continuing Studies. In the 90s, the Internet was in its infancy, and while it had many detractors, James recognized its potential. He decided to shift his career towards education and began classroom teaching, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for the Web. As his teaching career developed, so did his instructional style. “I’ve learned a lot about myself and others through teaching,” he says. “Whenever possible, I like to keep my classes laid back and foster dialogue. Students add so much to a classroom. We can learn better when we’re not anxious or frustrated. It’s important to be relaxed as technology can be frustrating at times.” For 25 years as a continuing education instructor, James has taught everything from web design and Internet marketing to HTML/CSS, WordPress, and Photoshop. While software and technology are always changing, James’ approach remains consistent: teach foundation, best practices, and key concepts because they last a lifetime. By doing so, James believes students will be better prepared to succeed in a field that values both versatility and specialization. “The pace at which technology is changing is increasingly fast. A colleague of mine recently told me that if it’s under two years old, don’t bother with it yet, and if it’s over five years old, forget it,” he explains. “We can’t be experts at everything and it’s important to know where to focus our attention. A diverse skill set is increasingly important. Developers are learning design while designers are learning code. It’s getting very specialized and yet there’s so much crossover.” This challenge of navigating an ever-changing technological landscape with new innovations, platforms, and software programs gives credence to James’ belief that those interested in the field should commit to lifelong learning. “I can be a cheerleader and coach but the student has to have the desire to keep learning on their own.” James Neufeld is currently pursuing personal and professional development in digital SLR photography, HTML5, CSS3, WordPress theme development, mobile site development, and visual communication and design.
