A L I CE B A I | S T U D E N T SU CCESS “My career path has gone through a number of changes over the years, but I always ended up in a role that had something to do with the financial aspects of business,” says Alice. “To me, the foundation of any business is the books.” Last year, Alice went from having multiple clients to working primarily for one client who runs three businesses: a podcast production company, a restaurant, and a farm-totable grain and flour business. The change has streamlined her own business and allowed her to become more involved in her clients’ businesses. “Bookkeeping is inherently so much more than just adding up numbers,” she says. “It’s organization, investigation, and being detail-oriented.” Alice enjoys examining how different systems could be improved. Especially in this age of technology, with cloud accounting, apps, add-ons and plug-ins, she believes businesses can save considerable time and energy by connecting their point of sale system, for example, directly into their accounting program. “Suddenly, you have made your life so much easier by having the two programs talk to each other,” she says. “You can’t make effective business decisions without knowing where you stand and the best way to get an accurate picture of your profits and losses is to have your systems work together.” In the near future, Alice hopes to apply what she’s learned about bookkeeping and running a business to organize financial workshops for young female entrepreneurs. “I have been approached by so many young women who have amazing businesses or business ideas, but don’t know where to start,” she says. “I’d love to provide a safe, non-judgmental environment for them to learn some typically dry business stuff in a fun and relatable way.” Alice Bai has spent her summer getting married and moving homes. She hasn’t ruled out taking more classes at Langara on higher-level accounting.

J E F F E L L I S | I N S T RU C TO R In 2008, instructor Jeff Ellis founded Cloudscape Comics, a non-profit dedicated to supporting our local graphic novel and comics community. The organization has come a long way from its humble beginnings – it now produces an annual anthology, participates in city events, provides art and comic classes, and is a fixture in Vancouver’s arts scene. “I really just wanted to make some friends and get some encouragement and feedback,” says Jeff on the inspiration behind Cloudscape. “Comics can be a very isolating pursuit.” Jeff has been drawing comics for as long as he can remember, but his interest intensified in high school, when he became an avid comic reader and filled his notebooks with his favourite characters. In creating his own work, Jeff draws on real experience or anecdotes. “I try to bring a strong sense of character into my work,” he says. “The better I know my characters, the easier it is to know what they would do or how they would react.” In his courses, Jeff encourages students to reconsider the traditions of the comic medium and seek out different approaches and exciting new artists. As the art form has evolved, so has the industry around it. Whether they aspire to make their own webcomic or write a full-length graphic novel, there are many paths artists can take. “Beyond the big three (Marvel, DC, Image), there are new opportunities at smaller publishers like Oni Press, Dark Horse, IDW, and micro presses like Black Mask and Iron Circus,” says Jeff. “Kickstarter and Patreon have also made it easier than ever to get support from the public.” Despite the changing landscape of the comics industry and community, one thing remains unchanged. “What’s interesting about graphic novels is that you are reacting to words and pictures at the same time,” says Jeff. “It’s one of the few mediums that uses both sides of your brain.” Jeff Ellis is currently a big fan of Guy Delisle and Jillian Tamaki, but his all-time favourite comic artist is Bill Watterson, creator of Calvin and Hobbes.

DE ANNA LY THGO | STUDENT SUCCESS Deanna Lythgo was already a successful realtor when she enrolled in the Construction and Development program, but she felt there was room to grow in her knowledge of building, construction, and renovation – traditionally, male-dominated areas. “People think of real estate in Vancouver as a guaranteed career, but it’s actually quite competitive,” says Deanna. Only a small number of the licensed realtors have long and successful careers. “This program deepened my understanding of many aspects of my industry, which enhanced my marketability and the value I can provide my clients.” A standout course for her was on residential construction, where she learned how to evaluate neighbourhoods as well as analyze building components and how they depreciate over time. One of her major projects focused on how to inspect residential properties. “An important consideration when evaluating a home for purchase is knowing the details of major systems like plumbing, heating, and cooling,” says Deanna. Now, she can better advise prospective buyers on how to factor these systems into their decisions. “What I learned benefited my clients immediately,” she says. “I’ve been able to spot problems in real-life situations and apply my broader scope of knowledge at home inspections, new development sites, meetings with pre-sale purchasers, and even in my own home renovations.” Among Deanna’s classmates were architects, landscape engineers, construction business owners, and new Canadians seeking to update their credentials, bringing diverse perspectives to the program and demonstrating that you are never too old or too established to learn. “When I enrolled, I felt that I possessed the skills to succeed in real estate long-term but lacked the breadth of knowledge to take my work to the next level,” she says. “My understanding and my confidence have grown exponentially.” Deanna’s experience was so positive that she is considering taking more programs at Langara, such as real estate investing or energy management, while continuing to work full-time. Deanna Lythgo’s career in real estate was inspired by her grandparents, who immigrated to Vancouver in the 1950s and helped establish the Italian community in East Vancouver.

M A RV I N M A SS O U D I | I N S T RU C TO R When Database Developer Certificate program instructor Marvin Massoudi earned his first degree in computer engineering, the mainframe generation of computers were starting to be replaced with desktop machines, so he’s seen a lot of changes in the course of his career. “Data volume, type, and rate of creation have profoundly changed in the past 20 years,” says Marvin. “I think that we are entering a new age of producing insights rather than just information.” Currently an enterprise intelligence data analyst at Vancity, Marvin brings elements of his work into the classroom. He not only introduces students to the techniques and tools used in modern data systems, but also what insights large organizations need from their data. “Working with data means going beyond the technology and getting to the root of a problem,” he says. Many students believe that success comes from mastering a language like T-SQL, but Marvin says that is only part of the work. “Everything we do is around adding business value and the technology makes sense only in this context.” Marvin has re-designed his courses to give his students – who go on to work in database administration, data analysis, business intelligence, and data science – an experience similar to what they would get in the workplace. “All exercises are designed not just as class projects but as modules that could be used in a code snippet library,” he explains. “For example, as a final database project, students build, design, and implement a sample financial banking database.” In his own career, Marvin meets with subject matter experts and stakeholders to understand the technical requirements. He communicates with people from the customer relationship management (CRM) department, information technology, business intelligence, and even customer representatives in branches to develop a data solution. “A data management process is like a data factory with different functioning units,” he says. “A strong knowledge of the business along with robust development skills is the key to success.” In his spare time, Marvin Massoudi gardens and goes on long bike rides. He’s working toward a data visualization seminar and course using Microsoft Power BI.

Educational Travel BONNIE L ANGM AN | STUDENT SUCCESS
After a long career as an accountant, Bonnie Langman is spending her retirement travelling the world through our educational travel programs and exploring her creative side, particularly through photography. “I have been interested in photography for decades,” she says. “Photography really makes you think about what’s in front of you, what’s important about it and how to best capture it.” Bonnie began taking photography courses at Langara because her day job left her little outlet for artistic expression. Beyond the tools and techniques she mastered, the courses motivated her to work harder at her photography than she would on her own. “For the most part, I consider myself a landscape photographer,” she says. “In India, almost everyone is open to having their pictures taken, so I became more of a street photographer.” When visiting Kluane National Park in the Yukon Territory, Bonnie found herself comparing the experience to being surrounded by crowds in Banff a few months earlier. “Kluane was just as beautiful and there were very few other tourists,” she recalls. “I remember standing at a viewpoint with panoramic views and the only people there were in our group.” While Bonnie has travelled on her own throughout Canada and the United States, she finds the idea of travelling to more distant locations somewhat intimidating. The Langara tours save her time on research and allow her to travel with a group of people who have similar interests. “The educational travel programs all have a purpose,” she says. “They aren’t travel for travel’s sake.” Bonnie recently returned from her very first painting tour, a trip through Tuscany. One of her retirement goals was to learn to paint and the trip offered plenty of inspiration. “The best part of this trip was the eight days spent in the wooded hills of south eastern Tuscany,” she says. “We had great views, olive trees, poppies, sheep with bells on, a pond with strange sounding frogs, and fabulous food.” Bonnie Langman’s Pentax K-7 has taken a bit of bashing in her travels. This summer, she plans to attempt to replicate some of the many delicious pasta dishes she enjoyed in Tuscany.

Post-Graduate Certificate in Personalized Medicine for Health Care Professionals
DAVE ANDER SON | INSTRUC TOR Biology instructor Dave Anderson divides his time between Langara and the University of British Columbia, where he’s a post-doctoral fellow. He’ll soon be combining his teaching skills and research knowledge as the program coordinator for Continuing Studies’ new personalized medicine program. “I see real value in providing education on topics I have studied through my PhD and post-doctoral work to those working in front-line health care,” says Dave. “Teaching helps keep my work grounded in the broader fields to which it applies.” The idea behind personalized medicine is that large-scale, personal patient data – such as particular genome sequences, RNA, and protein measurements – can be used to help individual patients. “Personalized medicine is an approach that recognizes each patient has a unique set of factors that could impact every stage of their diagnosis and treatment,” explains Dave. While it may seem futuristic, personalized medicine already exists. As part of their 100,000 Genomes Project, England’s National Health Service recently studied the genomic data of children from families with a history of cancer. They identified which children had positive markers for general cancer development and sent them for full body MRI scans, revealing one out of every seven kids had a previously undetected tumour. “By focusing on this data, they were better able help the people in their health care system,” says Dave. “The more data we generate, the more we discover.” His own interest in the sciences began with physics and astronomy, but Dave transitioned into biology as he came to see how the same fundamental principles could be applied to understanding living systems. “The scientific process is – as all things undertaken by human beings – fundamentally social,” says Dave. “It is amazing how often valuable insights into some element of my research arose out of a moment teaching, and vice versa.” Dave Anderson holds a PhD from the University of Oregon. He balances his scientific endeavours with time outdoors with his family and two rambunctious dogs.

World Languages & ESL REO TANAK A | STUDENT SUCCESS When Reo Tanaka left Tokyo at the age of 20 and enrolled in the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program, his goal was to one day graduate from the University of British Columbia (UBC) or Simon Fraser University (SFU). Now in his third year at SFU, it’s a goal he is about to achieve, thanks in part to his experience at Langara. “I had strong desire to master English when I first came to Canada and the LEAP program was famous for its intensity,” he recalls. “I thought it would be the fastest route.” Soon after he completed LEAP 8, Reo had to write a 3,000-word term paper – including researching journal articles, paraphrasing sentences, and following correct citation conventions – for his first history course. Using the academic skills he gained through LEAP, Reo was able to complete the assignment. “I would have failed my history course if I had gone straight into a degree program,” he says. “I had no idea what academic writing was and writing is an essential part of university courses.” Class presentations have been another critical part of his education, an especially daunting task for someone who isn’t a native English speaker. Once, while working on a group project with four other students at SFU, the team reached an impasse when no one wanted to present their project. Fortunately, Reo had done a lot of presentations while in LEAP. “Eventually, I took on the responsibility and presented in front of over 100 students and five instructors,” he remembers. “The presentation went very well.” This June, Reo was able to put his public-speaking skills to the test yet again when he spoke at Langara’s convocation ceremony for LEAP students. He shared the story of volunteering to give this group presentation and how the experience altered his self-perception. “Stepping out of your comfort zone is key to building confidence in yourself and to leading a successful life,” he says. “The completion of the LEAP program is just the beginning.” Reo is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in accounting and plans to become a Chartered Professional Accountant. His motto is ‘faith can move mountains.’

The Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Program is an intensive ESL program designed to prepare students for successful study at English language universities and colleges. Language is explored through activities inside and outside the classroom, and skills are practised in the context of academic subject material. There are nine levels in the program: LEAP Basics to LEAP 8. Each level is seven weeks in length with classes scheduled from Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. In addition to 20 hours of in-class instruction, students are expected to complete up to 20 hours of homework each week. LEAP graduates are granted direct admission to university-transferable studies at Langara.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Langara English Proficiency Program (LEPP)

Expand and improve your English skills for professional, academic, or self-development purposes through our part-time courses. Offered weekday evenings and Saturday mornings, LEPP courses target students with an intermediate to advanced level of English. LEPP provides quality instruction in an interactive, focused learning environment. Essential skills courses include Speaking with Confidence, English Writing Skills, Grammar Solutions, and Accent Reduction. Expanded skills courses focus on particular areas of interest and include Business Writing, Speaking Professionally, and LET preparation courses. Mandarin Education for Adults & Children

Our Mandarin as a second language program emphasizes practicality and features modern and interesting presentation styles, and use simple, easy-to-learn materials. We teach both the Traditional and Simplified written forms of Chinese characters; Hanyu Pinyin phonetics is also taught to complement the learning experience. Each adult Mandarin course is 10 weeks in length, with the exception of 8 weeks in the July term. *A 15% discount will be applied to registrations for those who have completed three or more Adult Mandarin courses. Each children’s Mandarin course lasts 16 weeks per term. World Languages

Learning a language can be fun and rewarding, and it allows you to better enjoy your travelling experiences. World Languages offers language classes with a focus on conversation skills useful for daily activities. The course content is introduced in a structured fashion and includes reading, writing, and grammar. Classes allow for individual attention, and activities are introduced to encourage interaction among students. Our language instructors are native speakers skilled in second-language teaching who use a variety of teaching techniques to facilitate learning. CS Testing Centre The Continuing Studies Testing Centre offers a full range of examination and proctoring services from individual sittings to large assemblies on a global stage. We can accommodate everything from complicated, high-stakes exam parameters to simple paper-based testing. Japanese Language Proficiency Test Langara Continuing Studies now hosts the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT). The JLPT, under joint organization of the Japan Foundation and Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, started in 1984 as a test to measure and certify the Japanese-language proficiency of those whose native language is not Japanese. The JLPT is the largest Japanese-language test in the world, with approximately 610,000 examinees in 62 countries and areas worldwide in 2011. Advance registration is required.
