S H AU N G O O D | SU CC ESS S TO RY After 20 years working in information technology, Shaun Good wanted a career change. The Senior Programmer Analyst at Langara began taking accounting courses in 2013 and is two courses away from completing his Continuing Studies Diploma in Advanced Accounting. “The Continuing Studies program provided the quickest pathway,” says Shaun, whose ultimate goal is to become a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). While the past few years of working full-time and studying have kept him busy, he found time to take on the role of Director of Communications with the Langara Accounting Club, working with students in the College’s Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) to organize events. “It’s been great to get an understanding of the College from both sides,” he says. “It gave me a better appreciation of what the College is trying to do and how the different areas are actually helping students.” After moving to Vancouver from Australia seven years ago, Shaun also enjoyed working with students who came to Canada from around the world. “One of the interesting things I’ve found is that Langara students come from so many different countries,” he says. “My studies and my time with the Accounting Club have allowed me to make good friends of diverse ages and backgrounds.” Shaun found it was easy to connect with students in the Accounting Club because they were working towards the same goal he was: finding a good job they’ll enjoy. Last semester, the club hosted their first networking event, bringing in representatives from various accounting firms to meet accounting students from Langara as well as other local colleges and universities. “It was definitely fun and rewarding to be able to help with that event,” says Shaun. “Getting known within a firm is such a big part of the recruiting process in this field. It was great knowing we were helping fellow accounting students make those connections.” Shaun Good is a huge Vancouver Whitecaps fan and attends as many of their home games as possible. In his spare time, he enjoys visiting the VanDusen Botanical Garden and Steveston Village.

K E I G H P RY | SU CC ESS S TO RY Musician Keigh Pry had considerable experience in music before coming to Langara’s Digital Music Production program, from piano playing at age four to a stint on CBC’s Rock Camp during adolescence, but the recent graduate felt some structure and education were required in order to move forward. “I felt like I was floundering after taking a few years off from music,” the music enthusiast recalls. “Langara’s program most closely aligned with what I wanted to do and the skills I wanted to brush up on.” As a student, Keigh spent hours happily working on projects that involved songwriting and sound creation. The composer learned fun production techniques as well as basic sound engineering and mixing. One of Keigh’s best memories was an impromptu recording session with some classmates, where they hung blankets everywhere and recorded vocals in the closet. “I think the most valuable thing I learned at Langara was how to have confidence in myself and my abilities as a musician,” says Keigh. “The program put me in a productive state of mind and gave me the skills I needed to progress in my career.” In 2018, PNEUMA, a film Keigh scored, played at the Vancouver International Film Festival. The musician is currently on the verge of releasing an LP, In Bed With The Enemy. The solo album was a huge undertaking; its production involved applying for a grant, assembling the songs, creating demos and song charts, hiring musicians, recording, and producing the record. “It’s a lot of pieces to fit together,” Keigh recalls. “In some ways, it’s easier to create something for someone else because you have guidelines you have to follow, like a roadmap for your creativity.” While the life of a working musician isn’t without its challenges, Keigh is happiest when writing songs, recording, and performing. “I think honesty makes a great song or performer,” says Keigh. “If you’re true to who you are and not trying to please someone else, you’re going to have an audience.” Keigh Pry is currently listening to artists ranging from Olafur Arnalds to Courtney Barnett and CHVRCHES as well as the new Death Cab for Cutie album.

A I S H A T E JA N I | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Aisha Tejani always knew that she wanted to help people, but she was unsure how. She knew early on that she enjoyed figuring out how people work and was drawn to any career that allowed her to connect with people. After working in a variety of careers including marketing, advertising, content writing, digital marketing, and workshop facilitation, Aisha realized that there was one specific thing she enjoyed more. “Facilitation led me to realize that I wanted a career where I could spend most of my time talking to people, and this is what led me to case management.” After an informational interview with a case manager at Drive Youth Employment Services, she suggested Aisha get her Career Development Practitioner Certificate (CDPC). Aisha enrolled in the 14-week full-time intensive Career Development Professional Program (CDPC) at Langara College, Continuing Studies. “I joined Langara, got my CDP, applied to a case manager job, and that’s what started me on my journey of case management!” As part of the curriculum, Aisha completed two practicum placements with the YMCA. First, within the Experience Works program where she worked with clients aged 45+. She then got experience with the Youth Employment Bootcamp program where she worked with teens and young adults. “I learned a lot about effective facilitation from this program as the facilitators I watched were incredible at creating rapport and connection while maintaining personal boundaries with clients. It confirmed that I was in a field that resonated with me because the staff at YMCA and I shared similar values.” Since graduating from Langara’s CDPC program in 2017, Aisha works at MOSIAC Vancouver as a Case Manager, assisting youth in their search for employment. Aisha appreciated that Langara’s class sizes were small, helping her to better focus on self-development, exploring feelings, and building relationships, all crucial skills for effective case managers. In her spare time, Aisha meditates 40 minutes every day. She teaches mindfulness to youth with the BC Crisis Centre. She is also the founder of I am Vancouver Dog, a website that connects dog products, services and information with local dog owners.

RO B I N P O L L A K | SU CC ESS S TO RY Robin Pollak first learned to type on a typewriter. While she used computers throughout her long and varied career, she felt her on-the-job experience was no longer enough. “I enrolled in the Computer Skills for the Office program because I realized I had never taken any computer courses,” says Robin. ”My methods of self-teaching were inadequate,” she says. When Robin first went to school for radio and broadcasting in 1985, computers were much less prevalent in education. She hosted a current-events show on Carleton University's shortwave radio station, CKCU, while earning her Bachelor of Arts in English Language and Literature and entered the working world in 1992. “I spent several years working with at-risk teens, as a youth counselor, and as a foster parent,” she says. “There is a measure of burnout that occurs in these professions.” Robin decided to move into more administrative roles and found work at companies ranging from IT start-ups to massive oil and gas entities to a professional services firm. Her most recent positions were executive assistant roles and she knew there were more efficient ways to do her work. “The skills and knowledge I have gained in this program have helped me immensely,” says Robin. “I am much more productive.” One of the programs she struggled with the most was Microsoft Excel, which Robin found had become increasingly powerful, but also very complicated. With the support and flexibility of her instructors, she was able to successfully complete her Excel courses. She also learned to create engaging Powerpoint presentations, new tricks to use in Adobe Acrobat, and better ways to work in Microsoft Outlook and Word. “Technology is faster, so we need to be faster,” says Robin. “The expectations in today’s offices are much higher than in the past.” Robin Pollak is also a singer-songwriter and performs at local venues The Railway Club and the Cottage Bistro. She’s been applying her new skills in several temporary roles while she looks for a permanent position.

Educational Travel P E T E R P RO N T ZO S | I N S T RU C TO R

Peter Prontzos’ passion for Greece started very early on in life; he started studying Greece when his parents sent him to Greek school as a child. The first time he visited Greece for educational purposes was when he co-taught a Classical Studies class. It was a great opportunity to give his students an in-depth introduction to the land of his ancestors: the history, culture, politics, and philosophy. “I was especially fascinated by Greek mythology, and at one point I drew up an almost complete genealogy of the gods and their children (such as Athena and Achilles).” Peter has taught for over 25 years at Langara College, receiving the 2017 Instructor Emeritus in Political Science and Interdisciplinary Studies. He began his academic career as a student at Langara, and went on to earn degrees in Psychology and Political Science. “One of the highlights of my career at Langara was to arrange four teleconferences for my students with Noam Chomsky. This was an exciting opportunity for them.” His enthusiasm for Greece and traveling have led him to his current role. Traveling with a group allows you to share experiences with likeminded people, while providing more opportunities for activities, and to visit wonderful places efficiently and affordably. “In addition to the people you meet, travel allows us to see many of the wonders of the world, especially the natural world, such as the Samaria Gorge in Crete.” Peter’s guided tour will reveal Greek life in addition to the historic sites. His personal connection to Greece, especially to the village of Kyparissi, offers access a casual traveler wouldn’t have: dine family-style at local restaurants while staying at a beach-front hotel. Fill your day with photography while strolling along Kyparissi’s pristine waterfront. “I not only enjoy discussing Greek history, culture, and politics, but I believe that they can give us important information and perspectives which are relevant to our lives.” Peter Prontzos enjoys writing and is just finishing up the manuscript for his first book. He has also worked in broadcasting.

N A S E E M G U L A M H U S E I N | I N S T RU C TO R Ten years ago, yoga program coordinator Naseem Gulamhusein came to Langara for a job interview; she left with the beginnings of what would be Langara’s yoga teacher training program. “It was a dream come true bringing higher education into the practice of yoga,” says Naseem. In 2008, there were just a handful of yoga studios and teacher training programs in the lower mainland. The Vancouver yoga community has changed immensely since then – with an explosion of new yoga styles, studios, and clothing – but Langara’s program still stands out from the crowd. “We train yoga teachers in the classical, therapeutic, and holistic practices of yoga,” says Naseem. “I present yoga as a multidisciplinary approach from India, where the traditional teachings are honoured.” Her own journey with yoga began in her teenage years when she discovered that yoga was in her family lineage from India. When she was diagnosed with an inflammatory disease 20 years ago, she found yoga helped her manage her condition. “Yoga keeps my mind and body flexible and reduces pain and stress,” she says. “It allows me to reflect and heal, and has brought positive change and vitality into my life.” This summer, Naseem completed her Master’s in Education at Simon Fraser University. Yoga not only helped her cope with the stress of balancing her studies with work and motherhood, but it related to her academic research on the impact of stress. “Yoga is a tool that can help us respond to stress in healthier ways,” she says. “I feel more equipped to guide people because of this experience.” In 2019, Naseem will be applying her learning to a new program that will train professional yoga instructors and healthcare professionals in the emerging field of yoga therapy. Unlike traditional yoga programs, yoga therapists typically work with clients one-on-one to address chronic and acute health conditions. “Medicine and yoga can work together to improve our overall health and well-being,” says Naseem. “By recognizing where yoga began, we can better see its future.” Naseem Gulamhusein recently presented on yoga therapy at the Canada India Networking Initiative (CINI) conference. Last June she was an instructor at the the United Nations International Day of Yoga.

World Languages & ESL C H R I S T I N E WO N G | I N S T RU C TO R Christine Wong has been teaching Cantonese for 20 years. Originally from Hong Kong, she studied Chinese language and literature before earning a doctoral degree in educational leadership from Simon Fraser University. “I wanted to become a teacher to share my expertise and passion,” says Christine, whose research interests include Chinese philosophy, transformative learning, and lifelong education. Christine strives to teach her students more than pronunciation and grammar. “The relationship between language and culture is multidimensional,” she says. “I’m sharing a journey of cultural exploration with my students.” To be able to communicate across cultural divides, students need to understand the social and cognitive context of language. “The dominance of the intonations, rhythms, and stresses of one’s own native language can be a tough barrier to break in acquiring full fluency in another language,” she explains, “but overcoming cultural difference is another challenge.” “There are an estimated 70 to 100 million Cantonese speakers worldwide, including communities outside of Asia,” says Christine. “You often hear Cantonese being spoken while walking the streets of almost any local neighborhood. The classroom experience transcends the college walls,” says Christine. “Cantonese connects us and expands our horizons.” Christine looks forward to the moment when her students use Cantonese in real-life situations, from chatting with an older relative to ordering tea. She loves to build relationships with her students and their families by going out for dimsum, and wandering through Chinatown. “Teaching isn’t a one-way street,” says Christine. “There is always so much more to learn from one another.” Christine spoke about her theme-based approach to teaching at the Cantonese Worlds 2 (CW2) workshop at the University of British Columbia in 2018. In November 2019, she’ll be sharing her knowledge as she leads a cultural tour of Hong Kong through Langara’s educational travel programs. Christine Wong is also a Certified Tea Master. Her ongoing projects include WALKchinatown and Leaf Behind, a cross-cultural approach to enjoying the beauty of tea and pursuing selftransformation.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.
