C E R T I F I E D A B O R I G I N A L F I N A N CI A L M A N AG E R (C A FM) Langara Continuing Studies courses are recognized by the Aboriginal Financial Officers Association of Canada (AFOA Canada) towards their Certified Aboriginal Financial Manager (CAFM) designation. AFOA Canada is a not-for-profit association founded in 1999 helping Indigenous people better manage and govern their communities and organizations through a focus on enhancing management, finance and governance practices and skills. AFOA Canada’s premise is that one of the keys to successful self-determination, creating a better life for Canada’s Indigenous people, and a better future for the next generation lies in improving the management skills of those responsible for the stewardship of Indigenous resources. The CAFM designation is the only designation for Indigenous finance and management positions in Canada. Students who are pursuing the CAFM designation can complete most of the required courses through Langara Continuing Studies. These courses are offered part-time, scheduled in-class at the main campus of Langara College. Specific Indigenous content courses must be completed online through AFOA Canada. Students must then pass a certification exam and must have obtained two-years’ work experience in an Indigenous context. Langara is excited that Continuing Studies students who are completing an accounting certificate or diploma also have the opportunity to work towards the CAFM designation. A list of CAFM Education Program courses and Langara Continuing Studies equivalent courses can be found online at: langara.ca/csaccounting For more information on the CAFM designation, visit: afoa.ca

A N DY B A R T L E T T | I N S T RU C TO R At a young age, Andy Bartlett dreamed of being a newspaper cartoonist; he tried to interview for a job at the local paper when he was only 11 years old. In 1982, still eager to further improve his cartooning skills, he decided to attend Sheridan College in Oakville. His career aspirations immediately shifted when he first saw his drawings come to life– it was a turning point for him. Soon after, Andy got a job with the Care Bear Movie production team. This was the first of many 2D animation production opportunities in his 35-year career in the industry. Andy is inspired by his college instructors. His fond memories of their influence helped him find teaching years later. Now he teaches at Langara College and other post-secondary institutions. In his opinion, Langara students have a jump-start in their careers as they get to create their own final project at the end of the 2D Animation program. “In my experience, this is the most valuable way for a student to learn the whole production process while creating a personal show piece of who they are as artists and what they can do. Not very many schools use this approach.” Andy looks forward to helping his students tell their unique stories and explore new ideas and skills. He is excited to see so many opportunities in Vancouver for talented artists starting in the profession. “We’re fortunate to have a large, varied, and enthusiastic animation community in Vancouver. For a young animator starting their creative adventure, you can’t get a much better opportunity factory than what we have now.” For Andy, animation is not only a career, but a journey where each day is different, interesting, and above all, fun. When Andy is not animating or teaching animation, he likes to animate some more. He dreams of producing his own short film someday – maybe when he has more spare time in retirement. He also draws caricatures at events around Vancouver and is an avid reader during his concurrent long commutes.

Builder Licence Certificate
K E N K I N G | I N S T RU C TO R Ken King comes from a family with a long history of working in the real estate, building, and construction industry. Ken has been a part of the process for over 40 years, starting originally as a licensed carpenter, and quickly moving into construction management. He is currently an instructor at Langara College. “The Real Estate, Construction & Development and Builder Licence programs provide students with an excellent foundation for working in these industries. With Langara, I have collaborated to create meaningful courses that reflect the industry today and into the future. As such, these have become some of the most sought after in the industry.” Ken’s career includes many years of teaching at various institutions. Throughout his career, he has completed a total of over $30 billion worth of construction projects. On top of being an instructor, he is also a manager of the Vancouver office at Hanscomb Limited, a cost and project consulting firm that has seven offfice locations and more than 60 employees. As he is still working within the industry, the knowledge he shares with students is current and relevant. In order to stay even more relevant, many of his students who work in different but related fields share their knowledge with Ken. “Oftentimes, students bring with them current or burgeoning technical knowledge from other sources that I do not have regular contact with. This only helps me to enhance my instruction materials and improve the programs that I have the honour of teaching.” Ken enjoys the fact that his students come from all walks of life. While some of his students attend to meet industry requirements, many are there to complete programs for the pure joy of learning, growing, and becoming better versed in their profession. A few fun facts about Ken is that when he was a child, he dreamt of being an astronaut. He once ran for federal office. He was a very serious outdoorsman and completed many backcountry hikes, and canoe trips. He now enjoys forest walks, spending time with his grandchildren, and gardening.

C AT H Y FU N G | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Recently, Cathy Fung decided to go back to school as a mature student. She completed three certificate programs at Langara: Professional Bookkeeper, Computer Skills for the Office, and Advanced Administrative Assistant. Her goal was to improve and upgrade her computer skills, including developing skills in the areas of technology, management, and communication skills. “The skills and knowledge that I gained from learning the new programs boosted my confidence and improved my efficiency at work. Not only that, since completing my three certificates last August, I’ve been approached by a couple of companies to work in their accounting department.” Cathy really appreciated that the classes she took had very flexible schedules, and that the class sizes were smaller. Also, the number of courses that she took on was rewarding and surprised her for a variety of reasons. “I have been taking more than 20 courses during the past year. I was so proud of myself achieving higher marks than I had imagined. I definitely feel more motivated and enthusiastic to learn as a mature student, since this is practical knowledge that I know will translate into my future career.” One of the benefits of returning to school as a mature student is Cathy found that it was easier for her to contextualize her newfound knowledge; she can visualize and better understand how what she learns in class can be immediately applied to the workplace. This proves to be invaluable. Currently, she is working as a bookkeeper at a corporation where she manages accounts payable and receivable. She is also responsible for processing invoices, reconciling bank transactions, and processing journal entries. She enjoys her work and finds it rewarding. In her spare time, Cathy enjoys playing badminton weekly, reading, and watching movies. She also loves food and enjoys trying different cuisines and restaurants. Her favourite place to visit is Lonsdale Quay Market, as she enjoys playing tourist in her own city.

Educational Travel J E N I KO U M O U T S A K I S | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS
Jeni Koumoutsakis recently returned from a group tour to Greece with Langara’s Educational Travel program. As someone who appreciates history, she was really looking forward to better understanding Greece through the ages, from antiquity to modernity. The trip allowed her the opportunity to soak up an exciting and rich culture. “This tour will interest travelers who want a well-rounded experience of the culture and history of Greece. They will be visiting various archaeological sites and will have local archaeologists who can explain in detail the history of Greece.” Jeni comes from a Greek background, but did not grow up in Greece. As she interacted with locals during the tour, she developed a deeper understanding of her heritage, making the trip more meaningful. The people were hospitable, accommodating, warm, and kind. It was a memorable trip that she thoroughly enjoyed, especially in a group tour setting. “Peter Prontzos’ experience, appreciation, and expertise on the subject is advantageous for the novice visitor. Those that are interested in learning more about Greece from an educational viewpoint, and not just as a tourist, will find the tour very fulfilling.” Even though Jeni enjoys traveling in general, she found the occasion of traveling with a small group tour to be much more satisfying. She got to enjoy wonderful moments with like-minded individuals. They had the opportunity to hike around the countryside. They also had the chance to visit towns that only the locals know about. “If you were traveling solo it would not be the same experience, seeing all the sites and sharing it with others while professional historians or archaeologists lead the tour.” In Jeni’s spare time, she enjoys traveling, learning about history and psychology. She understands and values traveling as it provides an opportunity to engage in lifelong learning. She also appreciates better understanding different cultures and societies.

Heather is a facilitator, mixed media visual artist, and end-of-life doula; she is also an Expressive Arts Therapy student at Langara College. “I want to help give people access to their imagination again. For some reason, when we grow up, our childlike urges to play and to imagine are shed. We take creativity for granted.” While studying Gender, Sexuality, and Women’s Studies at Simon Fraser University, Heather co-created an initiative called ArtTHRIVE, a free arts-based workshop for survivors of sexualized violence. A conversation from a participant inspired her to explore therapeutic arts that evening – Langara’s Expressive Arts Therapy program stood out to her. “Seeing positive growth and self-love is inspiring. One thing healers often put aside is their own needs to heal. Helping others care for themselves is easy, but remembering to practice your own self-care can be challenging.” The Expressive Arts Therapy program, the first of its kind in BC, offers an arts-based approach to integrative psychotherapy training. It emphasizes working with the imagination using art modalities such as creative writing, drama, visual arts, theatre, and movement, to bring about healing and transformation. In her practicum, Heather has the opportunity to select the demographic she wants to work with. She has decided to focus her work on hospice care, including working with terminal patients and supporting their families. “I am a firsthand witness of how healing the expressive arts can be. I was able to make sense of my own trauma by engaging in expressive arts therapy. When you have the opportunity to bear witness to that, you’re going to want to immerse yourself in it.” In her spare time, Heather enjoys interior design, and is a tropical plant enthusiast. She is currently taking care of 80 plants and documents their plant growth in various spaces in her home. Heather also enjoys spending time with her three cats Pearl, Eta and Burt.

Languages of the World & ESL J I N GZ H U W U | I N S T RU C TO R Jingzhu is a language enthusiast. As a Chinese instructor, her teaching philosophy is to make language applicable. She believes that any language comes to life when it intertwines with the culture. Drawn to the comprehensive style of teaching, Jingzhu became a Chinese instructor at Langara College 12 years ago. Langara’s Chinese language program stands out to Jingzhu as it welcomes all learners of the Chinese language. “Some Chinese programs only teach simplified Chinese, while others only teach traditional Chinese. At the Mandarin program at Langara, students are given the option to choose from all versions of written Chinese. This inclusive feature puts the Mandarin program at Langara College above all others.” She loves teaching first-year students. She is proud to see their progress, from learning their first words to fluently conversing in Chinese. She’s especially proud when native Chinese speakers are able to understand her students, or when they pick up a conversation in Chinese at their workplace. Her classes are attended by a diverse group, but usually half of her students already speak Cantonese. For Jingzhu, learning Chinese in Vancouver is a unique opportunity for students as they can easily practice and perfect their skills. “Vancouver, being a city with so many native Chinese speakers, provides the ideal setting for students to practice their learning beyond the classroom.” Jingzhu graduated with a major in Chinese language and literature at the Shanghai Normal University, and later completed a master’s degree in Asian Studies at the University of Oregon. She started teaching Chinese while completing her graduate studies and was hired as an assistant professor at Pacific University in Oregon. In her spare time, Jingzhu likes to be outdoors, either gardening or hiking. She loves living in Vancouver as she can immediately return to city life after spending several hours with nature. She also enjoys exploring new restaurants with her family.

Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Build English language skills and academic readiness with the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program. During this full-time, intensive program, you will develop the academic skills necessary to thrive in a North American college or university. Drawing from a variety of academic disciplines, LEAP’s specially designed materials will improve your language, academic, and cultural competencies. Course materials, projects, and assignments are tailored to each step of your English language journey. Our team of instructors, guest lecturers, and workshop facilitators will engage you in a dynamic, student-centred learning environment. langara.ca/leap
LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and connects language learning to the academic skills you will need to succeed. Each successive LEAP level will challenge you to expand your academic abilities, whether you are working on an interview project, reading source material for a research essay, or meeting your teammates to work on a group presentation. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English. LEAP graduates are granted direct admission to many programs at Langara, including university-transfer studies.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while exploring and expanding your knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Interactive workshops and educational outings related to your course topics will give you opportunities to apply your new skills in a natural environment.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. As you progress through the program, the complexity of academic strategies and the level of critical thinking required will increase. With each new level, your classes will more closely mirror college courses, including the introduction of the online learning environment and an increased emphasis on independent learning.
Program Expectations LEAP students are required to attend daily classes from Monday to Friday; to be active participants in classroom discussions and activities; and to complete their homework and assignments each night. You should expect to spend 20 hours in class and to complete an additional 20 hours of homework each week. Commitment is essential to success in this rigorous program.
