A M I R A L I S H A JA R E H | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Amirali Shajareh, known as Ali by most, was a senior accountant in his home country of Iran. After coming to Canada in 2016, he enrolled in the Advanced Accounting Program offered at Langara College. Arriving in a new country and starting a two-year diploma program had many challenges, but as Ali reflects on his achievements, he can proudly say he worked through them. Ali was fortunate enough to meet other like-minded students in the program who shared a similar experience. They were able to keep one another motivated despite their initial struggles to adapt to a new program in a new country or returning to school after a long break. Ali quickly learned that being in a positive, encouraging environment among hardworking, motivated students, plus receiving proper support from his instructors and the program coordinator made it easier to succeed. “Langara is an environment that provides support and assistance via knowledgeable instructors who teach in a way that makes things easier to understand. All my instructors helped me persevere despite the challenges I encountered and they helped with my success in the program,” says Ali. He also feels that the program prepared him for the job market. “After taking this program, I was not only prepared to start my career, but I had a clear vision about the job market and gained a lot of insight into what the career path of an accountant looks like.” Ali is now working towards becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA). He currently works as an Operations Accountant at Great Canadian Gaming Corporation after graduating from the Advanced Accounting program in 2018. He is responsible for managing financial information and producing reports for his managers. He appreciates and values the responsibilities he has at Great Canadian Gaming Corporation. In his spare time Ali enjoys swimming, diving, and spending time with his friends. He also volunteers with a charity that helps keep the planet clean by educating people about recycling and reusing.

Graphic Novel & Comix
K E V I N C R E E RY | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Kevin Creery has always been a performer. In high school, he thought his passion would lead him on the path to become an actor. In 2013, he discovered the world of electronic dance music – it was life-changing. He taught himself how to DJ and fell in love with the art. He knew right away that this was going to be his career. Kevin started off learning how to make his own music using YouTube tutorials, but quickly realized that it wasn’t for him. So, he started investigating program options and stumbled upon a review of the Digital Music Production (DMP) program at Langara College. The reviewer spoke about how the DMP program helped him achieve his goal to make commercially viable music – this is what convinced Kevin to take the DMP program. “The most valuable thing I learned at Langara is music theory, hands down. Learning theory led to teaching myself how to play the piano, and has allowed me to work seamlessly with other artists and vocalists, whether it be remixing a song or working collaboratively.” Even today, Kevin still shares his enthusiasm with people that he meets. “The DMP program blew away my expectations. I still speak very highly of it to this day. I went into it with little to no knowledge of music production. Now, when I compare the tracks I made before and after the program, I realize just how much I got out of it.” Kevin’s time at Langara helped him understand that if he invests 100% of himself into something, he can make it happen very quickly. This has carried over into his personal life, and into his current music project, Wild Cards. Kevin and his friend, Krystian Watts are the DJ/producer duo behind Wild Cards. Their biggest accomplishment so far is winning the 2019 iHeart Radio Remix of The Year for their remix of Khalid & Normani’s Love Lies at Miami Music Week. They beat out some pretty big names in their category, including Calvin Harris and Skrillex, making the win an even bigger honour. Kevin’s dedication and passion for music shines bright. In his spare time, Kevin finds himself opening up Ableton on his laptop, doing what he loves the most: making music. He also enjoys spending time at the gym, hanging out with his friends, or indulging in his guilty pleasure watching reality TV.

“The program helped build my confidence and opened doors for me to get to where I am today." – Rosmary Conte, Project Management Alumna
Photographer: Greg Blue Assistant Photographer: Mark Gibbon Art Director: Chris Gunn Producer: Lisa Tuyen Makeup: Behnaz Assadi
RO S M A RY CO N T E , PM P | SU CC ESS S TO RY Rosmary Conte started her career in post-production management in broadcast media and film, working in Vancouver, Toronto, and California. After many years in the field, she realized she wanted to expand her project management skillset. “I was transitioning from a film industry career and it was an opportune time to get additional training in project management since I wanted to land jobs in other industries,” says Rosmary. Seven years ago, she came to Langara to complete the Advanced Project Management Certificate program with Rob Clark and Sherry Ulansky as her instructors. Completing the program helped Rosmary gain credibility with employers, leading to opportunities in fields and industries outside media broadcasting. This was a transitional point in her career. “The program helped build my confidence and opened doors for me to get to where I am today,” says Rosmary. “Shortly after I graduated, one of Langara’s project supervision instructors at the time invited me to join the Canadian West Coast Chapter Project Management Institute (CWCC PMI) association as a volunteer, and here I am today.” She is now the President of CWCC PMI. Her experience as a Chapter Leader has given Rosmary the opportunity to connect with a talented group of driven, committed, and ambitious individuals in various portfolio areas. Not only that, but a referral from a CWCC colleague is what led to her current project manager role at BGIS. “Volunteering for the CWCC PMI was one of the most valuable things I did,” says Rosmary. “I learned a lot about working with a board of directors, governance, fiscal responsibilities, and made meaningful, lifelong friendships.” As a Project Manager at BGIS, Rosmary works in BC and the Yukon on construction, energy and carbon sustainability projects. She has the flexibility of working in a variety of environments, including the office and various sites throughout BC where she meets with consultants, contractors, and stakeholders. In 2018, Rosmary graduated from the PMI Leadership Institute Master Class (LIMC) program with 30 other Chapter Leaders that came from Australia, Europe, Africa, Turkey, USA and Canada. In 2019, the Canadian West Coast Chapter PMI celebrates their 40th Anniversary. Rosmary loves to travel. Last summer, while exploring in Paris, she stopped to ask for directions. The person she asked ended up being a PMP member of the France Chapter – it was a pleasant surprise to meet another PM across the globe.

A N N E T T F O RCI E R | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS After developing an allergy to grain flour while working as a professionally trained pastry chef in Munich, Germany, Annett Forcier decided to go back to school to get her high school diploma. Soon after, the internet took off and that started her career as a self-taught front-end developer. At the time, there were no formal computer science courses for web development, so she bought herself a computer and started exploring source codes on websites. After working in the industry for 13 years, Annett wanted to formalize her work experience, so in 2012 she decided to take the part-time Web Developer Certificate Program at Langara College. “I am definitely more confident after completing the program. Not only do I have substantial work experience, I also gained a certificate from a post-secondary institution. I believe employers like to see work experience and respect a dedicated candidate who is willing to continuously learn,” says Annett. Completing the certificate through Langara gave Annett an edge over other applicants when she started applying for jobs. “I have tried out different part-time courses at various schools and I especially liked Langara, because not only do the instructors work in the industry, but the curriculum is current, flexible, and accommodates the needs of the market,” says Annett. After graduating from the Web Developer program, she worked at various organizations such as Lululemon, Cossette, and Hootsuite. A few years into working in the industry, Annett discovered a gap in the market for developers with design skills. So, she shifted her focus from web development to email development. In 2017, she was ready to become a full-time freelancer. In 2019, Annett incorporated her company Emailboutique Digital Inc. with a team of freelancers. Emailboutique implements customized designs for marketing emails and landing pages, including layout design, copywriting, and platform testing. Annett never guessed her initial curiosity with the internet would lead to her future career. In her spare time, Annett enjoys travelling and building her professional network internationally. She loves having the freedom and flexibility to work in various places, meeting online acquaintances in real life and forging new friendships wherever she goes.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY WAYNE KAULBACH
Educational Travel WAY N E K AU L B AC H | I N S T RU C TO R
Wayne’s Kaulbach’s future career became clear to those around him when he was just nine years old. As his family watched him patiently wait 45 minutes for the CN Tower to align perfectly for the composition of his photo, a budding photographer was born. He graduated with his Masters of Photographic Arts in 2004 and received his Fellowship in 2006 from the Professional Photographers of Canada. As an instructor at Langara College Continuing Studies for almost 20 years, he currently leads Educational Tours to Morocco, India, and Portugal. These places hold a very special place in his heart. Having first visited Morocco in 1986 after hitchhiking through Europe, Wayne still describes the country as a feast for all your senses after returning many times over the years. Portugal is another of his favourite places to be and, after Vancouver, would be his top choice of somewhere to live. Since his first trip to India in 1986, Wayne has returned on seven other occasions and finds his breath taken away each and every time. “Visiting the Taj Mahal is always an exercise in pure wonder. We make sure we arrive just before the sun comes up to avoid the crowds and experience that wonderful early morning light. Walking through the old market areas and being completely in the moment. Meeting local people, photographing them and hearing their respective stories is always a highlight of the trip,” says Wayne. Exploring India can be a bit overwhelming for an inexperienced traveler. In a country with over 1.3 billion people, traveling with a cohesive group of compassionate professionals can relieve stress, allowing for an unforgettable experience. Wayne loves sharing knowledge and his own travel experiences just as much as he enjoys learning from those he is traveling with. “Every time I travel to these locations I connect with people within the group. We become like a tight knit family entity during these trips, and these people are indelibly etched into my memories. We have the opportunity to share the visuals and stories with one another, it’s an exciting time, and I am fortunate to have many repeat travelers” says Wayne. During Wayne’s spare time, he enjoys traveling with his family, and embracing his love for street photography. He has visited over 40 countries and has been on four around the world trips. He is also a multiaward winning photographer and runs Skylight Images with his wife, Michelle Fleming. View Wayne’s photographs on Instagram @wkaulbachphotography

Yoga Therapy for Integrative Health
Y I L I | I N S T RU C TO R While working as a credit card specialist for eight years at Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce (CIBC), Yi Li never could have imagined owning his own massage therapy clinic. He found it quite challenging and with the closure of the Vancouver call center at CIBC, Yi decided it was time for a career change. He had many friends who worked in the medical field and this inspired Yi to find a career path that was related to helping people. In 2014, Yi started Langara’s Registered Massage Therapy (RMT) program. He was a top student in the program, and was hand-selected to tutor his peers. “Langara’s continuing studies RMT program really changed my understanding about how a college as an institution can help an individual to achieve his or her full potential through career development,” says Yi. The RMT program far exceeded his expectations. It gave him the necessary tools to help others while launching a rewarding career. The small class sizes and practical hands-on training with highly skilled instructors made all the difference when transitioning to working in a real-life clinic setting. The RMT program gave Yi confidence in both his own abilities and those of his classmates to work in any clinical setting and provide effective and safe massage treatments for their clients. “The most valuable thing I learned at Langara is how to become a professional health care provider. As the first public post-secondary institution in BC to offer an RMT program, Langara’s approach is unparalleled in academic and hands-on training,” Yi told us. After graduation in 2016, Yi trained at an RMT practice to gain experience and to build up his skills. He then opened up his own practice in 2017, Metro Therapeutics Massage Therapy Clinic. While still in the process of launching his website, he already has almost 600 patients and is often booked up two weeks in advance. He is also sharing his knowledge as an Instructor for Langara’s RMT program. In his spare time, Yi enjoys going to the recreational target shooting range with his friends. He also enjoys spending time with his family, especially his two daughters.

Languages of the World & ESL D E M I VA N | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Demi Van credits her early love of English music for her proficiency in a hard-tolearn language. Originally from Vietnam, she’s only been in Vancouver for two years and already receives frequent compliments from her fellow students on her English proficiency. Demi heard about the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program while she was still living in Vietnam. She chose LEAP because she understood the importance of adjusting to a new culture and learning a new language before transitioning into a regular studies program. “Besides helping me to improve skills and providing cultural knowledge, the LEAP program gave me the confidence to speak in public during my business classes. The LEAP program encourages students to be confident in their abilities,” says Demi. Recently, Demi had the honour of speaking at the LEAP Graduation Celebration as an alumni speaker. When she first started the LEAP program as a student, she never thought she would have this opportunity. “The LEAP program taught me and my classmates how to best prepare for an upcoming presentation, how your posture may affect your confidence, and so on. This helped me a lot in the Post Degree Diploma (PDD) Business Administration program as presentations are mandatory in every class and students have to get used to talking in front of an audience.” After graduating recently from the Business Administration program, Demi joined Asics Canada Corporation as a Key Holder. As part of the management team, she takes care of the stores and the performance of the associates. Her goal is to find a full-time administrative assistant role after honing her managerial and leadership skills. In her spare time, Demi enjoys swimming, hiking, and cycling. She loves exploring new trails that lead to breathtaking views and biking around the Stanley Park seawall just before sunset.

Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Build English language skills and academic readiness with the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program. During this full-time, intensive program, you will increase your oral and written fluency in English while developing the academic skills necessary to thrive in a North American college or university. Our team of instructors, guest lecturers, and workshop facilitators give students the opportunity to practice English skills in the context of academic subject material. In each seven-week session, you will focus on projects and assignments using materials developed by our program and tailored to each step of your English language journey. www.langara.ca/leap
LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and connects language learning to the academic skills you will need to succeed. Each successive LEAP level will challenge you to expand your academic abilities, whether you are working on an interview project, reading source material for a research essay, or meeting your teammates to work on a group presentation. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English. LEAP graduates are granted direct admission to university-transferable studies at Langara.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while exploring and expanding your knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Interactive workshops and educational outings related to your course topics will give you opportunities to apply your new skills in a natural environment.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. As you progress through the program, the complexity of academic strategies and the level of critical thinking required will increase. With each new level, your classes will more closely mirror college courses, including the introduction of the online learning environment and an increased emphasis on independent learning.
Program Expectations LEAP students are required to attend daily classes from Monday to Friday; to be active participants in classroom discussions and activities; and to complete their homework and assignments each night. You should expect to spend 20 hours in class and to complete an additional 20 hours of homework each week. Commitment is essential to success in this rigorous program.
