RO S A L I E M I L L E R | SU CC ESS S TO RY Rosalie Miller knows the value of hands-on learning. For several years, the Seattle-based artist and freelance filmmaker has worked in the movie industry and has always believed that the best way to learn was to just try things out. In 2012, Rosalie enrolled in Langara’s Digital Film Production (DFP) program for a couple of reasons. It had only been a few years since she crossed over from actor to budding producer so she wanted to jump-in full-time to get a better appreciation of the roles various departments played in the filmmaking process. She also knew that she wanted to make documentaries and needed to have a better technical understanding of film production. As she hoped, the DFP program was practical, challenging, affordable, and taught her the basics of filmmaking; a fitting alternative to the 2-year Master’s program she also considered taking. It gave her a solid foundation from which to build and enabled her to discover what she liked about the filmmaking process. “Because the life of the program is short, you receive a concentrated dose of education very quickly. The timeframe and workload forces you to fully commit and establish trust upfront. I was completely immersed; my classmates became my family and my instructors became my mentors. I remember making music videos and creating our final projects, and I loved our team.” In addition to getting their hands dirty, Rosalie encourages students to surround themselves with talented, smart, likeminded people in order to get the best insight and honest feedback. “Meet people and grab a coffee,“ she said. “Your network will be a critical part of your journey. And stay curious. Don’t be afraid to jump in and do it.”

N ATA S H A & A L I CE’S SU CCESS S TO RY Childhood friends Natasha Neale and Alice Bai had always imagined how great it would be to start a business together. But the aspiring entrepreneurs could have never imagined they’d be running two businesses at the same time. As business partners, Alice and Natasha run a boutique bookkeeping service company called Note Bookkeeping, which caters to creative professionals and small businesses. In the same building, they run Little Mountain Shop, a pop-up rental space used by designers, artists, and brands that also acts as a storefront to Note Bookkeeping’s back office. The set up allows them to manage both businesses without needing to be in two places at once. Initially, they had no plans to start either business. Alice and Natasha were both interested in getting more experience in bookkeeping because the field was becoming a growing part of their roles at the companies they were working for. After completing Langara’s Professional Bookkeeper Certificate program separately, they discovered from speaking to friends and contacts in the creative industries that there was a gap in the market, and it opened up the opportunity to start the new business. “What we thought was just further education to apply to our jobs at the time actually ended up being a career change for both of us. We saw the need for a young, fresh, and modern bookkeeping service,” Natasha said. “There’s a huge need for good bookkeepers in this city,” Alice adds. “People tend to avoid doing their bookkeeping – it’s generally seen as boring and overwhelming. We want to make it fun, fresh, and easy for our clients, and show them how painless it can be.” Visit Little Mountain Shop and Note Bookkeeping at 4386 Main Street in Vancouver and online at www.littlemountain.space

M AG G I E S T E WA R T | SU CC ESS S TO RY Maggie Stewart’s love for volunteerism stemmed from her love of the natural world. As coordinator of the Langara student volunteer program, VOLT, she is passionate about getting students involved in the community. This passion recently led her to enroll in the Volunteer Coordinator certificate program. Although she has worked with volunteers since 2010, the Volunteer Coordinator certificate program has provided Maggie with valuable strategic insights on the recruitment, retention, and recognition of volunteers. The education compliments her work portfolio, giving her confidence and practical skills to manage volunteers and it fuels her passion for volunteerism and community engagement. “Often volunteer managers don’t have access to education programs related to their field. This course is perfect for those who work with or would like to work with volunteers as it provides a solid foundation for coordinators to build on.” She notes that her instructors, who are also professional volunteer coordinators themselves, have a wealth of knowledge and encourage collaboration to promote idea sharing amongst students. That atmosphere allows fellow coordinators to learn from each other, understand best practices, and improve their strategies. She hopes that this open dialogue will result in an increase in volunteerism and growth in industries that don’t necessarily use volunteers. “Volunteers are traditionally known as non-profit resources, with health care, environmental, and social service sectors using volunteers in many roles. As our understanding of volunteers develops, I think we’ll see them being used more and more in other sectors. The possibilities and opportunities are endless. For now, I’m proud to share my experience and hope I can inspire students to give back to their community.”

UPCOMING EDUCATIONAL TR AVEL TOUR
PAINTING IN TUSCANY SEPTEMBER 2016
“It’s wonderful to see students blossom under the influence of the Italian culture…” - Judith M. Atkinson, Instructor Visit www.langara.ca/edtravel for more 2016 tours
Educational Travel J U D I T H M . AT K I N S O N | I N S T RU C TO R In 1992, visual artist Judith M. Atkinson had a moving experience. Judith was part of a university art tour that brought her to Florence, Italy, and it left her inspired. Recalling her experience many years later, the Langara instructor realized that more people should have the opportunity to learn and create art on-site, particularly in such a beautiful country steeped in tradition. This motivated her to begin creating Langara’s Painting in Tuscany tour in 2011. Judith saw the impact the rich culture of Italy had on her art and recognized how vital it was in stirring her creativity and strengthening her education. So she designed a tour where students could have an enriched experience, the best opportunity for self-expression and skill development, learn about the culture, and build meaningful memories. Making this tour as memorable for her students as the tour in Florence was for her meant that Judith needed to develop an engaging curriculum that gave students the freedom to develop their art, learn about the great works of The Renaissance masters, be immersed in the day-to-day lifestyle of the region, and create a connection with the landscape and fellow students. So far, she’s more than pleased with the results. “It’s wonderful to see students blossom under the influence of the Italian culture and witness students of all levels create art and memories that will last long after they return home. The chance to become friends and share our experiences over a delicious meal and a glass of wine helps reinforce the delightful camaraderie of a small group of traveling artists. The adage that you truly learn by seeing is fitting for this tour – being in Tuscany and capturing the experience on paper or canvas is educational, enriching, and meaningful.”

World Languages & ESL A L A N G I R L I N G | SU CC ESS S TO RY Alan Girling grew up in the suburbs of Vancouver and was the first member of his family to attend university. As an English Literature student, Alan developed a passion for language that led to a career teaching English, and writing fiction and poetry. Early in his career, Alan worked in Japan where he started a family and got his first real teaching experience. Then, after teaching in private colleges in Vancouver, he found a job at Langara where he has been teaching in the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program for nearly 19 years and the Langara English Proficiency Program (LEPP) for nearly as long. “Being an instructor here is uniquely rewarding personally and professionally,” Alan says. “I have seen in my LEPP classes how much my students want to build their confidence in spoken English, and in LEAP how they strive to prepare for the challenges of academic life. What I value most in both programs is the students’ nearly universal dedication and enthusiasm. Each individual shows it in their own way, but they all have it, and I try my best to bring the same enthusiasm to the classroom by finding the most effective way for each student to make progress.” Alan attributes much of his success as an educator to his colleagues, whose diversity and generosity have been a great source of pride and inspiration. For any students thinking about taking a LEAP or LEPP program, Alan recommends speaking to both instructors and especially former students. “They’ll let you know specifically what to expect in the classes, but also, I can almost guarantee, they will tell you how their experience shaped their lives for the better.”

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.
Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.
Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

Computer Technology H O L LY H A M ES | SU CC ESS S TO RY Holly Hames knows how fast technology changes. Since completing Langara’s Web Publishing certificate program, the consultant and Langara instructor has seen how the emergence of everything from 3D printing to ‘the Internet of Things’ has pushed the development of her field. When Holly decided to make a career change into web design, she first tried learning it on her own. But she quickly saw that the pace of technology and the continuous advancement of industry standards meant a steep learning curve. So she looked to continuing education to bring her up to speed. Among the three web publishing programs Holly researched, Langara’s offering suited her best. She needed a curriculum that could teach her the process of web development quickly, be customizable to meet her needs, and fill the gaps in her skill set. Aside from the flexibility, she found the program’s curriculum both technical and practical with highlights that included the creation of online sites, making presentations of full-scale projects, and learning from industry experts. “Langara opened many doors for me. The program gave me a well-rounded tool kit for working in the field and I was able to take on projects as soon as I completed it,” she said. Fortunately, Holly is now in a position to help prepare students for the field as well. “I never expected to have the opportunity to become an instructor. It’s a great experience. We have instructors who work in the industry and know current industry standards, and we work with the latest software, so we can offer students new course offerings whenever possible. My learning experience at Langara was really positive and now I can share my knowledge with others.”

Sustainable Communities D R . L A N V U | SU CC ESS S TO RY Before enrolling in Langara’s Sustainable Urban Beekeeping program in 2015, Dr. Lan Vu decided to try and manage his own beehive with the help of the internet. The practicing surgeon from the Fraser Valley quickly found that beekeeping presented many challenges that couldn’t be solved with online resources. As someone who is strongly committed to building sustainable and inclusive communities, Lan saw the beekeeping program as a means to enrich and improve the quality of the gardens in his neighborhood in a responsible fashion. He was intrigued and pleased to discover how timely and forward thinking the course was, particularly because of his recent experience trying to maintain a hive of his own. “Honey bees are remarkable insects, but beekeeping, I soon found, requires significant responsibility, and many problems need the help of an experienced mentor. This program was exactly what I needed to ensure that my bees remained healthy,” he said. The course offered an excellent learning environment for Lan, who appreciated how knowledgeable the instructor was in responsible beekeeping as well as in developing bee and pollinator gardens. The opportunity to learn in a group setting also proved beneficial because it encouraged the exchange of ideas, shared the enthusiasm of the students, and established supportive relationships. “My favourite part of the course was how it slowly unlocked the world of insect pollinators and the plants that have adapted to them. It has opened my eyes to this complex network and I am able to examine insects and plants in a whole new light. It’s an outstanding program with a very inspiring instructor.” We’re sure his bees agree.

DAV I D G I L L I S | SU CC ESS S TO RY When David Gillis was a young boy, he dreamt of becoming a firefighter. He and his best friend would wear red plastic helmets and play with their toy fire trucks for hours on end. Now living in a small community, David has realized his dream by becoming a volunteer firefighter and first responder. David’s long-awaited experience as a volunteer firefighter however, also gave him insight into the full range of traumas first responders are exposed to. He soon realized he needed greater awareness of how personal and professional traumatic experiences were processed and dealt with by the body and mind. His search led him to Langara’s Strategic Resilience for First Responders program. Most of David’s reading and research about trauma and its effects, such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, seemed to deal with everything from the neck up. It wasn’t until his introduction to the Langara program that David began to realize just how important a more holistic and body-centered approach to dealing with the effects of trauma and post-traumatic stress was to a first responder. “This program has allowed me to better understand the effects of toxic work environments, the traumas of everyday life, and both acute and chronic trauma on first responders. I’ve found personal therapeutic value in the program through its use of self-awareness practices and experiential learning.” David believes the program is the beginning of a new paradigm to help first responders become more resilient in the face of cumulative traumas and is a necessary recovery tool for those who have been overexposed. He is now a member of the program’s advisory committee and looks forward to contributing to the ongoing development of the program.

“The smiles my mom saw then is what I see now in my students.” - Helena Kopelow, Instructor

CULINARY ARTS REGISTER TODAY
H E L E N A KO P E L OW | I N S T RU C TO R As a 7-year old, Helena Kopelow always helped her mom in the kitchen. The two would often spend hours preparing traditional Hungarian dishes for eager guests who looked forward to the delicious, bountiful meals her mom was known to make. She looked up to her mom and always wanted to be able to cook like her, and that early exposure was a big reason why Helena became both a chef and an instructor. Helena’s experience cooking at her mom’s side built a strong foundation for her education as a classically trained chef. She was taught how to turn water into soup and how to stretch a dollar in the kitchen. But from her formal education, Helena grew an appreciation for the complexity, flare, and creativity needed to be a good chef. Fueled by her desire to hone a skill that brought pleasure to everyone, it was only a matter of time before Helena became a teacher herself. Prior to teaching at Langara, Helena was an instructor with the Vancouver School Board for 12 years. She describes her teaching style as unique and creative with the goal of fostering an encouraging and comfortable atmosphere. And she emphasizes that just like a chef, a good instructor is one that is well prepared. Aware that the industry is very taxing and physically demanding, she makes it a point to show her students how simple and fun cooking can be. But making it look effortless was something she learned from her mom. “My mom was the best cook around and she made it look so easy. She cooked a lot. She even left me with a collection of over 10,000 cookbooks and my favorites were the ones that were heavily stained and used. She would mark scores like 9 out of 10 on recipes she tried out, and made notes when dishes were a hit with the family. The smiles my mom saw then is what I see now in my students. Seeing those results is so rewarding. It’s why I love teaching.” Chef Helena is the owner and executive chef of Grayson’s Catering which also produces a line of organic spices and offers private classes.
