DA N I E L A O S H I K AWA | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Born and raised in São Paulo, Brazil, Daniela Oshikawa was a furniture designer and freelance 3D artist before coming to Canada and enrolling in the Continuing Studies Diploma in Advanced Accounting Program. “My first semester was a huge wave of information in a language that I rarely used,” says Daniela. Not only was she adapting to a new culture and country, she also had to navigate the administrative processes required to start her education. “As an international student, everything is new to you.” Daniela decided to attend Langara shortly after arriving in Canada because of its support for international students. Here, she found plenty of students making the same transition and Canadian students who were understanding and helpful. “I immediately felt the unity of the community here and it made me want to be part of it,” says Daniela. She got involved with the VOLT volunteer program and was hired to be a Peer Supported Leader for her Financial Accounting 1 class. Through these activities, she learned a lot about other cultures and met great leaders who care about others’ success. Though she hasn’t graduated yet, Daniela has already found work as an accounting clerk at Compendia, an accounting firm specializing in the film industry. Her background made her a great fit for the company, which balances accounting and the arts. “I love working there because their values resonate with me,” says Daniela. “As designers, we are always seeking solutions and innovation. In accounting, if you want to become a Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA), you need to develop a similar way of thinking.” Her experience as a self-employed artist also helps her relate to the clients. She remembers what it is like to spend so much time and energy trying to make sense of the financial aspects of a business rather than focus on the creative side. “Accounting looks like a foreign language at first,” she says, much like film and design have their own vocabulary. “If you don’t speak your clients’ language, how can you help them to succeed?” Daniela Oshikawa received a $1,000 scholarship from the Chartered Professional Accountants’ Education Foundation of BC in 2017. She loves to ride her bicycle on the seawall in her free time.

“We continuously push boundaries, do research, and develop new techniques to create better animation in games.” - Wilson Leung, lead instructor

W I L S O N L EU N G | I N S T RU C TO R Lead instructor Wilson Leung became interested in animation because of two words: liquid metal. In 1991, he saw Terminator 2: Judgement Day in theatres and was blown away by the computer-generated, liquid-metal Terminator T-1000. “This was the coolest thing I had ever seen in my life,” he exclaims. “I told myself, ‘I really want to make something like this.’” That experience sparked a drive that has carried him through a now 20-year career in animation, from television series to games to teaching. An avid gamer since discovering Space Invaders, Wilson was thrilled to join Electronic Arts (EA) in 2000 as a motion capture specialist and animator. His most recent project for the Vancouver-based game studio has been its flagship franchise, FIFA Soccer. “One of the best parts of my job is keeping up with and applying the latest technology,” says Wilson. “We continuously push boundaries, do research, and develop new techniques to create better animation in games.” As an industry, animation and gaming are constantly changing and evolving, says Wilson. His role as the lead instructor for our 2D and 3D animation diploma programs is to ensure that what students learn reflects current demands. He’s no stranger to this kind of work as he helped our partner institution, the Centre for Arts and Technology (CAT), redevelop their curriculum for their 3D animation program in 2011. “I never thought I would be a teacher in my career,” says Wilson, who has balanced his work at EA with mentoring and teaching animation since 2002. “I loved it immediately.” Wilson’s support of students isn’t limited to their in-class experiences. He enjoys helping them make industry connections and find their place in Vancouver’s bustling job market. In addition to being the third largest film and television production centre in North America, Wilson says our city is home to top-tier video game companies (think Microsoft, Capcom, Relic, Nintendo) and world-class VFX and animation studios (Sony Imageworks, DHX Media, and Atomic Cartoon). “It’s amazing to see many of my students working at these well-respected companies,” he says. While Wilson has seen an incredible amount of change over his long career, the main lesson remains the same. “Success in animation requires two things: passion and hard work.” Wilson started out as a junior animator at Mainframe Entertainment (now Rainmaker), where he worked on Reboot, the world’s first CGI TV animation series. When he wants to unplug, he can be found eating dim sum with his family or taking his kids to play violin or badminton.

General Business Management Certificate

K AT H L E E N WO N G | I N S T RU C TO R Instructor Kathleen Wong, who lends her Human Resources (HR) expertise to our General Business Management Certificate Program, started her working life in an unexpected place: the Drive-Thru window at McDonald’s. “I learned the urgency and efficiency required in a fast food restaurant,” she says. “I have honed my customer service skills since then – which has helped me up to this day!” Her work ethic also helped direct her career in HR. As a university student, Kathleen worked at a local credit union branch part-time, so when she completed her studies, finance seemed like a natural fit. She’s spent the last 15 years in a variety of roles at Vancity. “I love the fact that I work for a local organization that supports our community,” says Kathleen. While many people think of HR in terms of hiring, that is one part of quite a diverse field. As a senior consultant, Kathleen’s current focus is called ‘total rewards.’ This encompasses employees’ compensation, benefits, work-life balance, performance recognition, career development, etc. “This aspect of HR is constantly evolving and changing,” she says. “We need to continue to learn about trends and practices so that we can meet our employees’ needs and support their well-being now and into the future.” In addition to her considerable professional experience in management and advising roles, Kathleen’s career path has included customer service, marketing, and multiple disciplines in Human Resources (organization design, change management, leadership, compensation, etc). Her varied experience gives her a wealth of examples to draw from in her lesson plans. “Some of the best learning for students occurs when they ask questions that reflect the practical, real-life HR situations in the workplace,” says Kathleen. “There are so many ‘grey area’ or ‘what if?’ HR situations that come up on a daily basis and that’s where an instructor can really add value in the classroom.” Outside of work, Kathleen loves watching our local Canucks and even stops the occasional puck as a hockey goalie. She has spoken at various conferences in BC on HR-related topics in addition to her teaching career.

J E N N I F E R H A R D E R | I N S T RU C TO R After several years as a graphic designer, Jennifer Harder enrolled in Continuing Studies (CS) courses in 2008 to expand her knowledge of web design. Now she is a published author and an instructor at Langara, teaching web design and e-publishing courses. “I started e-publishing around 2011,” says Jennifer. “I enjoyed working with Adobe software, so I decided to write a book about Adobe Acrobat and creating electronic forms using JavaScript.” She did some research into publishers and connected with Apress in New York, who published her first book, Enhancing Adobe Acrobat DC Forms with JavaScript, followed closely by her second book, Data Merge and Styles for Adobe InDesign CC 2018. “I like both the creative and analytical side of design and coding,” says Jennifer, who is proficient in both CSS and JavaScript. As a student, a favourite project of hers was a simple game she made to test whether users could see a full range of colours. She’d then show them what someone who was colour blind would see. As an instructor, she tries to create similar opportunities for students to connect with what they are learning. “I let people express their creative ideas in the website or documents that they create,” she says. “Everyone has an interest or a story that they want to share with others.” In her day-to-day life, Jennifer works for a local printer redoing files that aren’t correctly set-up for printing. Her troubleshooting experience has given her considerable insight into how to solve a problem, whether in print or on the web. She views each problem as an opportunity to find a better way of doing things. “I think every new discovery is a small triumph and one step closer to a goal,” she says. “When you have been sitting for hours or days trying understand why your HTML page is not working as it should, and then you realize you left out a semicolon and it all works, you experience a feeling of relief, peace, and accomplishment all at once.” Jennifer Harder has two cats, one of which looks like a baby Wookie. She is currently working on her third book, which is about incorporating multimedia files into websites using Adobe software.

PHOTOGRAPHY BY KEVIN LANTHIER

Educational Travel K E V I N L A N T H I E R | I N S T RU C TO R

Photography instructor and tour leader Kevin Lanthier has history with the remote islands of Haida Gwaii. He spent three summers working as a photographer at a fishing resort, spending hours every day driving a boat around with his camera. “Although my main job was taking pictures of guests fishing, I also got to spend hundreds of hours exploring the landscape, studying the breaching patterns of humpback whales, and being chased by dolphins,” he says. “I felt very connected to the land and sea and wildlife there.” The islands, located off the BC coast, are known for their wildlife and ancient forests. As the last ice age receded from there about 2000 years earlier than the rest of the province, it created a unique biocultural zone that has led to its nickname: the Galapagos of the North. “Haida Gwaii is remarkable in many ways,” says Kevin. “The strong preservation of Haida culture and history makes visiting a unique cultural experience. The pace of life and remoteness makes it about as different a place as one can travel to within our own province.” Returning to the quiet beauty of Haida Gwaii will be quite a change from his life in Vancouver. An alumnus of Langara’s full-time photography program, Kevin co-founded Cake Imagery, a commercial photography and retouching company in 2007, and now teaches landscape photography and Photoshop courses for Continuing Studies. In his personal practice, Kevin creates conceptual images that predominantly explore urban spaces. “On my own, I tend to photograph places a bit more than people or things,” says Kevin. “My first exhibition series, The Special, examines Vancouver’s history and culture through crafted, distilled, imaginary streetscapes built from disparate constituent parts from around the city.” While the Haida Gwaii trip in August is a photography tour, Kevin says that it can also simply be a chance to explore and enjoy time in true wilderness. For the photographers, it’s an opportunity to capture some stunning images. Asked what makes a great photo, Kevin replies, “If an image can make a viewer stop and feel something, anything at all, even for just a moment, then that’s what you strive for – and about all you can hope for.” Kevin Lanthier recommends tour participants bring a good DSLR or mirrorless camera with a wide-angle lens for landscapes and a telephoto lens for wildlife.

Health, Safety, and Environmental Compliance

S H E L LY P R A S A D | I N S T RU C TO R Instructor Shelly Prasad started her career in dentistry 21 years ago. Today, she’s still at the same practice, balancing her work with teaching in our dental reception program. “The best part of my career are the patients and the people I work with,” says Shelly. “Most of our patients have been with the practice just as long as I’ve worked here.” At Dentists on Dunbar, Shelly has seen the needs of a dental practice change over the past two decades. Like many industries, the biggest change has been the advancement of technology. Claims, payments, and estimates, for example, are now sent via EDI (Electronic Data Interchange), which means faster confirmations of coverage, approvals, and payments. X-rays can be downloaded onto the patient’s file like a digital picture. “Technology changes and we need to keep up,” she says. “Teaching has given me the chance to pass on my experience as well as show students what skills potential employers are looking for.” As the office manager and bookkeeper, Shelly understands many different aspects of a modern dental practice. While mastering technology is important, so is the ability to multi-task and quickly adapt to changes. “One of the biggest challenges in working in a dental office is your day doesn’t always stay on schedule,” says Shelly. “I tell my students to go with the flow and have a back-up plan.” When she was a student, Shelly took classes part-time, three nights a week for three months. She understands that students are often trying to start a new career while balancing their lives. “As a mom of two young children and a homeowner, taking time off for a full-time program was not feasible,” says Shelly. Within a year of graduating, she landed her first job. She says that today’s graduates are lucky because they are entering an employees’ market, with the highest demand for dental receptionists that she’s ever seen in her long career. “My best advice for students was given to me by my first employer,” says Shelly. “It was ‘You are the first and last person seen by the patient – make that moment a good one’.” In her spare time, Shelly Prasad volunteers in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside and says the experience has made her more compassionate. She also takes belly dance lessons for fun.

World Languages & ESL K A R E N S EG A L | I N S T RU C TO R English as a second language (ESL) instructor Karen Segal began her writing career as a journalist. Though she’s spent the past 18 years working in education, she still applies that same straightforward communications style to her teaching. “I am pretty down to earth in terms of my writing and have often been told that I write like I speak, which is a huge compliment,” says Karen. “I think my writing experience allows me to find my students’ mistakes quickly and to identify a pattern that I can point out to them.” Since 2000, Karen has taught ESL classes in a variety of schools, including UBC’s English Language Institute. Her courses at Langara have focused on business writing and speaking, which are very different from academic studies. “My classes prepare students for the business world very specifically,” says Karen. “I love working with people and teaching them things that will improve their lives.” Many of Karen’s students are immigrants who have been living in Vancouver for a long time but are unsure about speaking English in professional settings, writing work emails, or applying for jobs where even small grammatical mistakes can keep them from getting an interview. Covering topics from cover letters and reports to job interviews and presentations, these courses equip students with the strong English skills they need to succeed in the working world. “I want students to feel comfortable speaking and not to worry that they are being judged,” says Karen. “Night classes can be tricky because students are tired from a long day of working or school or caring for their kids, so part of my job is to be funny and energetic.” Through roleplays in class, students are able to practice what might be difficult for them and to learn phrases for different situations. “Often it is simply a matter of them gaining confidence,” she says. “But that is huge.” Karen Segal rides her bike to class, which seems to surprise some of her students. She reads voraciously and her favourites include The New York Times, The Washington Post, The New Yorker and The Guardian.

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.
