G I L L I A N CO F S K Y | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Working as a fitness and dance instructor for a number of years, Gillian Cofsky quickly discovered a point when the business side merged with her art. This included the accounting component that she often ended up taking on because she enjoyed working with numbers and was able to grasp it quickly. In 2015, Gillian decided to formalize her experience with numbers by enrolling in the Professional Accounting program at Langara College. She already knew she could do the work, and she loved being able to help other artists learn the financial side to their business, helping them to successfully bridge the gap as she did. With Gillian’s passion for dance and her enrollment in the Professional Accounting program, she found a specialized role as a Bookkeeper & Box Office Manager at the Indian Summer Arts Society. This unique role offered a great balance, working within the arts, while allowing her to use the education, and business experience she was acquiring from school. Gillian is now the Finance & Operations Manager at Indian Summer Arts Society. “Having work in a specific field where I could immediately apply what I was learning in school has been amazing. I was also able to learn way more about accounting for non-profits and charities, which I wasn’t learning in school. The combination of education and hands-on experience is the best way to go!” Throughout her time at Langara, Gillian was able to find a way to balance her coursework with her career. “I found Langara to be welcoming and down-to-earth, and I loved the flexibility of the Continuing Studies program. It allowed me to focus on bookkeeping and accounting, to take classes on evenings and weekends, and to enroll in courses as I was able to take them on.” She also started a new role at Fresh Roots Urban Farm Society, helping with their bookkeeping. Experience with her position at Indian Summer Arts Society and Fresh Roots has allowed Gillian the confidence to take on more clients, with the ultimate dream of having her own bookkeeping/business coaching firm where she helps creative entrepreneurs, activists, and non-profits better understand the financial side of their business. She hopes to help her clients gain a deeper understanding and more confidence in their businesses. In her spare time Gillian and her partner are converting a cargo van into a camper. They’re looking forward to turning it into an adventure mobile they can take on road trips this upcoming summer.

“The program was one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had. I was introduced to industry contacts who helped me get a practicum with a TV documentary production company.” – Tracey Draper, Digital Film Production Alumna

Photographer: Greg Blue Asst. Photographer: Mark Gibbon Art Director: Chris Gunn Producer: Lisa Tuyen

T R AC E Y D R A P E R | SU CC ESS S TO RY As a Cree woman from the Peepeekisis Nation in Saskatchewan, Tracey Draper’s heritage constantly influences her work. Tracey is identifying with her cultural heritage and history through storytelling using the medium of film. She loves drums and includes their sound throughout her work. An alumna from the Digital Film Production program, Tracey is currently working as a project coordinator for the Western Aboriginal Harm Reduction Society. The Digital Film Production program is well-structured, so Tracey only had to take four months off to return to school. “The program was one of the best learning experiences I’ve ever had. I was introduced to industry contacts who helped me get a practicum with a TV documentary production company.” She learned the importance of teamwork and organization, and how the value of pre-production ties into other elements of the film production process. After taking the Digital Film Production program, Tracey worked on an exciting project with Deborah Holland, Program Coordinator for Langara’s Singer Songwriter program. “My music video skills, particularly editing and special effects, were appreciated in the program. It was a lot of fun to work on that film with Deborah. We did a lot of green screening and Deborah was a great sport.” Working as a female DJ for many years, she was familiar with the struggle of working in a male-dominated industry. She quickly realized that there were few documentaries telling the story of women in the DJ scene. Tracey decided she wanted to bridge that gap. Her film Girl Spinnin’ paid homage to the women working in a male-dominated field and required intensive pre-production, including research and interviews. As the music composer to a second documentary film, Tracey worked on Two Indians Talking, which required unique post-production elements. During the filming of this documentary, Tracey worked closely with the director to understand his vision and to see how the music could contribute to the story. “I always try to enhance the feeling of the scene, almost like another character. It’s a purely creative process that I love.” Not only does Tracey spend her free time working on documentaries, she also loves watching films. “I really like the indie film scene in Vancouver. There’s a lot of work going on and a lot of really good indigenous storytelling happening.” In her spare time, Tracey loves to watch movies and TV shows, as she believes there’s always so much to learn from watching. She also enjoys writing, recording, and editing.

General Business Management

L E V I T RU D E AU | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Levi Trudeau recently completed the Small Business and Entrepreneurship program at Langara College. After working for a number of years, he wanted to further his education. Levi did some preliminary research, found the program and applied. He appreciated that the program aligned nicely with his work schedule, and was affordable in comparison to other institutions. Levi currently works in the manufacturing sector as a Lead Hand, where he is responsible for coordinating and overseeing a team of fifteen employees on a day-to-day basis. He ensures that the production outputs are met in a timely manner, and confirms the quality on items before shipment. Certified as an Occupational First Aid attendant, and as a member of the Joint Health and Safety Committee, Levi enjoys leading his fellow colleagues while creating a positive working environment. Levi’s current position allows him the freedom to work with various individuals from all walks of life. “My primary goal for enrolling in this program was to gain the knowledge required to successfully start a business in the future. My entrepreneurial spirit to create new products, my desire to create jobs, and to lead people within an organization has led me to explore this field.” The most valuable thing Levi took away from the program is learning how to analyze financial statements. He found this to be valuable not only in his work life but also in his personal life. He is now equipped with enough financial literacy to have conversations with colleagues and can brainstorm tactical and strategic plans for improvements within the organization. “The Bookkeeping Level 1 and Financial Skills for Managers courses, both taught by Arlene Lambert, were very helpful. With her outgoing personality, and real-world experiences, she made it easy to stay engaged in class. She taught me valuable life lessons pertaining to investing, and for that, I am forever grateful.” The program also gave Levi the confidence to start and run a business. Since completing the program, Levi now has the skill set to work alongside management on instilling efficiency within the organization, from a manufacturing perspective. “The Small Business and Entrepreneurship Program is beneficial if you are interested in starting your own business, or if you are currently employed in any industry. This program provided me with knowledge and skills to broaden my horizons both professionally and personally.” During his free time, Levi enjoys playing the guitar, composing music, reading, and learning more about science and technology.

K AT H E R I N E D R A B E K | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS While working as a marketing consultant, Katherine Drabek wanted to become more confident with her computer skills, so she decided to take the Computer Skills for Office Certificate program at Langara College. “The computer courses are structured a bit differently from your typical post-secondary courses because these computer courses were more hands-on, and intensive. I was challenged to pay close attention to the instructors as they were demonstrating how to use the programs during class.” Katherine initially took courses at Langara before transferring to UBC to complete her B.A. in English Literature. She then moved to Europe and worked for a few years before acquiring her M.Sc in Global Marketing. She currently helps market a variety of products and services for clients in the non-profit sector. She wanted to acquire a more formal and structured way to use computer programs. The courses she took included: Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Project Supervision; which introduced Katherine to managing projects using Microsoft Project. These courses help with her current work initiatives as she feels more savvy while working on projects with clients, and her output has increased as a result of this. Katherine can now problem-solve better and is more confident when trying out new applications. The courses she took at Langara helped to increase her confidence. “I had no problem adjusting to going back to school and have always enjoyed learning. I have taken online courses, but prefer to be in a classroom with others.” Katherine also has a newfound appreciation for people who are working full-time and taking courses in the evening. She was fortunate enough to reduce her workload for a few months so she could take an average of four courses each semester while at Langara. Since graduating, Katherine applies her skills in a variety of ways. This includes better understanding processes and being better at fine tuning specific writing styles which she finds useful while working for a local non-profit. Katherine is currently volunteering in grant writing and taking on a variety of work projects. In her spare time, Katherine enjoys reading, cooking, and exercising. She also likes keeping up with technology as the world of digital marketing and social media is constantly expanding.

Educational Travel RU T H R AYM O N D | SU CC ESS S TO RY

When Yukon tour participant Ruth Raymond saw the lights in the sky for the first time, she was mesmerized. “There it was! The Northern Lights! From that little arc, it spread and shimmered and danced for us. We clicked, fiddled with our cameras, made adjustments, and clicked some more.” Ruth is a retired writer who spent her 25-year career writing for newspapers and various publications in a number of sectors, including energy, medical, and forestry. Since retiring, she is pursuing a certificate in the Langara Continuing Studies photography program. Ruth stumbled upon some information about the Yukon group trip, did some research, and decided it was the right fit for her. She had not been on an organized tour before. This guided tour was the perfect number of days, with the right price, and was very well organized. It also tapped into Ruth’s passion for photography, so it was a no brainer to sign up. “It turned out to be the ideal experience! Everything from start to finish was so well organized. We never had to wonder what came next, or where to meet, or how long activities might take.” Even though Ruth thoroughly enjoyed seeing the Aurora in person, it wasn’t the only highlight for her. She loved the trip to Carcross, a small Yukon community. She experienced soaking in natural hot springs and enjoyed the wonderful cuisine with the many new friends she made on the trip. Having travelled to a number of countries, including Belgium, France, Holland, Ireland, Mexico, and Scotland, this Yukon trip stands out as unique to Ruth. She enjoyed having every detail taken care of, as well as the new experience of travelling with a cohesive group of people. “I was able to enjoy the entire experience without feeling the anxiety I usually feel while travelling. I didn’t need to research every detail and risk being disappointed at an event or restaurant. All that research had been done for me, and all those decisions had been made by people who have intimate knowledge of the area.” Ruth loves telling stories, and considers travelling to be the best way to do this. “Now, as my photography skills improve, my stories can be better illustrated.” Ruth’s future plans include travelling with her husband, who will be retiring this year. They hope their future travels will be educational and fun, with the ultimate goal of selling a magazine article or two about their adventures.

Yoga Therapy for Integrative Health

J E RYS J U RU | I N S T RU C TO R As a young ethnic woman in a predominantly male field, Jerys Juru is not your typical Occupational, Health, Safety and Environment professional. Working in the profession for over eight years, Jerys has a diverse work experience that she now shares with her students in the Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) Compliance program at Langara College. As an instructor, her passion for the profession is what brought her to Langara. “Langara is an environment where you can be yourself and share your experience with authenticity, which is the kind of teaching and learning environment anyone would want to be a part of.” The profession has taught Jerys a lot. She knows to always rely on facts to make informed decisions. This includes not agreeing to anything that she does not have a firm understanding of. It also ensures that she thoroughly understands both the benefits and consequences that come with each and every single one of her decisions. “A major part of this profession is that you learn how to think outside of the box. You learn how to make things work in a manner which allows an organization to remain true to their goals and values while ensuring HSE compliance is being met.” Jerys struggled working as a young woman in a predominantly male industry. In her early 20’s, it was a challenge to find her place and learn how to be heard and respected among her colleagues. With her increase in experience, she quickly acquired a stronger sense of empowerment based on her knowledge. “When you become passionate about what you do and are consistent in your efforts to do it, eventually, people stop seeing your gender or race or anything outside of what you bring to the table. Passion and effort speak volumes.” Jerys appreciates that the profession is exciting and every day is different. The variety of work that is offered ensures she is constantly prioritizing and engaged in what she does. Her love of working with people and solving problems is part of the job that continually drives her. “Working with various people from different ethnicities, educational backgrounds, and professional knowledge has taught me a lot about myself and I believe it has enhanced my quality of life in many ways.” In her spare time, Jerys indulges her creative side in poetry and music. She also enjoys writing and hopes to publish a children’s book in the future.

Languages of the World & ESL JAC K D O | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Jack Do had a dream that propelled him. He wanted to study marketing overseas, but quickly realized he needed to improve his English language skills first. From his home in Vietnam, he enrolled in the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program, so he could fulfil the requirements of the post-degree diploma in marketing. His overall score on the IELTS test was low, but he figured that once he took a few of the LEAP courses, he would move on. After taking his first LEAP courses, Jack realized they were the best way for him to pursue his dream career in Canada. At Langara he was immersed in an English environment where he was required to listen to and speak English every day. “I had an opportunity to meet locals and people from different countries. It has helped me to expand my network, which is useful for my career path in the future.” Studying in English is not without its challenges. Jack found that it was tiring to listen to a brand-new language every day. The students in his class were very diverse and he found that it was difficult to understand the different accents at first. However, the more he studied and learned with his classmates, the better his understanding of English became. He also really enjoyed presentations. “The best in-class activity is the presentation. It gave me the chance to enhance my confidence.” Jack is also involved in the Langara community. “I started to volunteer at VOLT, the Langara volunteer program, in September 2017. I assist new LEAP students who come to take the placement test, and I participate in the Grad Panel as well. It’s time for me to give back to LEAP. This program helped me become successful.” Jack’s proudest moment at Langara College was when he received the LEAP to Academic Studies Entrance Scholarship, awarded to the student with the highest score upon graduation. His hard work and hours spent practicing English had paid off in more than one way. Jack’s favourite English saying is “no pain, no gain” – this quote motivates Jack to continually study and reminds him to keep on going, regardless of how tough things may seem at the time. “I wanted to challenge myself; I moved to Canada. I wanted to get the scholarship, so I had to study hard. So, every time I am struggling with life, I think about it and move forward.” In his spare time, Jack enjoys exploring new coffee shops in Vancouver with his friends. He enjoys making videos and going for walks downtown. Jack is also volunteering as a receptionist and marketing communications assistant at CNIB.

Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) Build English language skills and academic readiness with the Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP) program. During this full-time, intensive program, you will increase your oral and written fluency in English while developing the academic skills necessary to thrive in a North American college or university. Our team of instructors, guest lecturers, and workshop facilitators give students the opportunity to practice English skills in the context of academic subject material. In each seven-week session, you will focus on projects and assignments using materials developed by our program and tailored to each step of your English language journey. www.langara.ca/leap

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills, and connects language learning to the academic skills you will need to succeed. Each successive LEAP level will challenge you to expand your academic abilities, whether you are working on an interview project, reading source material for a research essay, or meeting your teammates to work on a group presentation. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English. LEAP graduates are granted direct admission to university-transferable studies at Langara.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. You will develop your speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while exploring and expanding your knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Interactive workshops and educational outings related to your course topics will give you opportunities to apply your new skills in a natural environment.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. As you progress through the program, the complexity of academic strategies and the level of critical thinking required will increase. With each new level, your classes will more closely mirror college courses, including the introduction of the online learning environment and an increased emphasis on independent learning.

Program Expectations LEAP students are required to attend daily classes from Monday to Friday; to be active participants in classroom discussions and activities; and to complete their homework and assignments each night. You should expect to spend 20 hours in class and to complete an additional 20 hours of homework each week. Commitment is essential to success in this rigorous program.
