The power of people. MESSAGE FROM THE L ANGAR A COLLEGE FOUNDATION CHAIR
2016 was an exciting year for the Langara College Foundation. After a year of change in 2015, the Foundation was able to focus on its mission to financially support Langara’s vision to be Canada’s pathway college and a catalyst for student success. As an alumnus and a donor, I know first-hand how funds raised through the Foundation impact student lives. They increase accessibility to education. They enrich the educational experience. They open up opportunities beyond the classroom and build the foundation for student success. Our donors give and support students in so many different ways. I am continually humbled by their generosity. In particular, I would like to shine a spotlight on the passionate supporters of the Studio 58 Legacy Fund who helped the fund surpass its goal. The College also showed its commitment to student success and community spirit during the successful return of the employee giving campaign, Support Our Students. On behalf of the Foundation board and staff, our heartfelt thank you for your ongoing support. We could not do this without you.

With the help of donors, the campaign exceeded its original goal and raised over $273,000 (after matching). Over 538 individual donors contributed to the success of the campaign, among them 219 Studio 58 alumni and 55 current and former faculty, directors, and designers. “The remarkable success of the Studio 58 Legacy Fund campaign means future generations of students will have access to productions beyond the normal scope of Studio 58,” said artistic director, Kathryn Shaw. “The Legacy Fund will allow Studio 58 to remain a leading force in theatre training in Canada. All of this could not have been possible without our caring and generous donors and supporters.” In 2016, the Legacy Fund sponsored the participation of professional actors Leslie Jones in The Crowd and Deneh Cho Thompson in the Fourplay show, The Classroom.

Recognizing design potential. THREE NEW AWARDS FOR DESIGN FORMATION STUDENTS
Langara Design Formation students now have access to three new annual awards thanks to a passionate group of faculty. Led by department chair, Marcela Noriega, six faculty members within the department joined together to establish new awards as part of Support Our Students 2016. With the College matching all employee donations during the month of March, Design Formation faculty saw the opportunity to create new financial support for hardworking students within their program. Affectionately referred to as the ‘Long Shot’ awards, the Design Formation Faculty Scholarship and Design Formation Faculty Award recognize students who may not have had the best start to the program but showed promise progressively improving each semester. The department wanted to support students throughout their learning process, and honour students who were hardworking, driven, and freely shared their knowledge and abilities. The same group also created the Design Formation Faculty Bursary to support students in financial need.

Coming together to support our students. EMPLOYEE GIVING AT L ANGAR A
At Langara, supporting student success is at the heart of everything we do and this could not have been demonstrated better than with the successful relaunch of Langara’s employee giving campaign, Support Our Students (SOS).
The vision of SOS is to unite, inspire, and engage the entire Langara community to ensure that every student has the support they need, both in and out of the classroom, to complete their educational journey and realize their potential.
IMPACT OF SOS • $53,070 raised (after matching) • Seven new bursaries and awards created • Over 30 students support by funds raised through SOS • Eight peer tutors sponsored • Increased experiential funding for the Office for Student Engagement
After being retired in 2014, SOS was brought back in 2016 in response to employee demand. It was the first major fundraising initiative led by the newly restructured Langara College Foundation. The relaunch of the SOS campaign was instrumental in increasing awareness of the Foundation among employees. The College matched all funds raised during the month of March, doubling the impact of all employee contributions and motivating many to give for the first time or increase their contributions. SOS surpassed its goal of $20,000; exceeding the initial target by 30 per cent, bringing in a range of new donors, and doubling the number of monthly donors. “The community response to SOS was phenomenal. Not only did we reach our financial targets, but the campaign re-engaged employees from across the college and inspired several unexpected spontaneous grassroots (interdepartmental, departmental, and individual) fundraising initiatives," said Yvonne Ohara, SOS initiative lead. SOS was also recognized by the National Council for Marketing & Public Relations (NCMPR) District 7 Medallion Awards in the Fundraising Campaign category.
