N I L U F E R & S A I R A R A H M A N | SU CC ESS S TO RY Success has always been a moving target for sisters Nilufer and Saira Rahman. Since graduating from Langara’s Digital Filmmaking Program, the two women have founded their own film production company and surpassed a major milestone: producing a full-length film. Their feature documentary Arctic Mosque, about the journey of a mosque across Canada, was broadcast nationally on CBC and APTN, which ran a version using the Inuvialuktun language. In 2015, the Canadian embassies in Sweden and Norway invited them on a screening tour, where they met with SVT (Sweden’s equivalent to CBC), who broadcast Arctic Mosque later that year. “I am most proud of Arctic Mosque,” says Saira. “Not just because it was a Herculean task to produce as firsttime filmmakers, but it has a strong message of hope – that it is possible for diverse people to live together as a healthy, happy community.” In their hometown of Winnipeg, the sisters have found an amazing place to work, capable of supporting independent filmmakers, and a growing movie industry in Manitoba. Their company does a mix of commissioned and independent work and many projects relate to cultural diversity and social justice. “Growing up non-white and Muslim in Canada has meant that even though I was born here, I am always regarded as the other – different and from somewhere else,” says Nilufer. “Diversity is at the heart of the human experience and film is such a powerful way to communicate unique perspectives.” When they decided to change career paths and pursue film, the Rahman sisters considered skipping training and working their way up in the film industry. Ultimately, they decided a formal education would give their careers a stronger foundation. “Completing our own commercials, music videos, short documentaries and films – as well as crewing on our classmates’ projects – prepared us for working as filmmakers today,” says Saira. “Over time we could have learned how to create films ourselves, but Langara’s program gave us the confidence and encouragement to do it.” Saira Rahman was previously a principal and helped establish the first Islamic school in Manitoba. Nilufer Rahman interned on CBC’s comedy series Little Mosque on the Prairie.

“Combining massage therapy with teaching yoga was a very natural evolution. While massage therapy is a hands-on skill, it also incorporates therapeutic exercises and selfcare, which is very prominent in yoga.” - Jes von Henzke, RMT alumna and yoga instructor

J ES VO N H E NZ K E | SU CC ESS S TO RY Langara College yoga instructor Jes von Henzke radiates strength. Part of that strength is physical – Jes is a power lifter as well as a yogi and a practicing registered massage therapist (RMT) – but much of it is mental. Over the past 15 years, Jes has been robbed at gunpoint, seriously injured in four car accidents, and experienced intense personal loss. “A lot of the things that happened brought me to being a healer,” she says. “It’s so easy to get into a hopeless place, where you’re wasting energy trying to figure out the why of everything.” A practicing yoga instructor when she enrolled in human kinetics at Langara, Jes soon switched into the registered massage therapy program thanks to her brother, who believed her gift for massage and intuitive nature would make her an excellent health care provider. “Combining massage therapy with teaching yoga was a very natural evolution,” says Jes, who now balances her RMT career with teaching yoga. “While massage therapy is a hands-on skill, it also incorporates therapeutic exercises and self-care, which is very prominent in yoga.” Despite the overlap between the two fields, the transition was not easy. As she adjusted to being a full-time student, Jes found support when a chance encounter with a family friend led her to the Gathering Place, a campus space for Langara’s Aboriginal students. “Having that community as a mature student really helped ground me,” she says. “RMT is an academically and physically intensive program.” During the RMT program, Jes met Naseem Gulamhusein, who runs the Yoga Teacher Training Program. The two connected over a shared view of yoga as a holistic practice and when Jes graduated, Naseem asked her to join their program. “Our instructors are upholding the tradition of yoga directly from India,” says Jes. “We want our graduates to embody the practice, lead safe and effective classes, and elevate the profession.” When Jes started training as a yoga instructor, she suffered from panic attacks when leading a class. Overcoming her fear required her to face her own vulnerabilities and she believes that exposing our ‘most potent selves’ is a crucial part of the journey for both teacher and students. “The thing about yoga is that peace doesn’t come from being zen all the time,” says Jes. “It comes from facing the turbulent seas of life, practicing radical acceptance of what is, and allowing yourself to see the beauty that rests in the present moment anyway.” Jes von Henzke is currently a practicing RMT at Fiskco Health + Performance and Rep1 Fitness. She believes yoga is a lifetime practice that offers new lessons each day.

P E T E R N O RWO O D | I N S T RU C TO R Accounting instructor Peter Norwood has had a long career in both curriculum development and professional accounting, but teaching caught his interest early and didn’t let go. “I taught part-time in the professional accounting programs almost from the time I became a professional accountant,” says Peter. “There is always a sense of personal triumph when you see students that have graduated from our programs have successful careers.” Since coming to Langara, he has chaired the accounting department and was the first chair of the Langara School of Management. Now a full-time instructor, Peter is working with Continuing Studies to develop the curriculum for the Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF). “Because of my involvement in the merger of the three accounting designations into the CPA, I was very familiar with the ACAF program,” he says. “The ACAF program can be used to introduce people to accounting and provide practical accounting skills that will be sought after in the job market.” Whereas the Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation provides a more holistic and deeper understanding of accounting, the ACAF program focuses on the practical application of accounting. Peter expects that many people who complete the ACAF program will wish to continue their education by earning the CPA designation. “The need for highly trained accountants – whether through ACAF or the CPA designation – will continue,” he says. “The need to understand the financial situation of any business is of utmost importance.” Peter thinks there is a common misconception about accountants as ‘back room’ people who only like to deal with numbers. Accountants need strong technical skills, but also need to be good communicators. “Students’ success will be based not only on technical proficiency, but also on their ability to communicate and work with other people across the organization,” says Peter. “It is not just about the numbers.” Peter Norwood was the chair of the Chartered Accountants’ Education Foundation for six years and has an MBA from the University of Western Ontario. In his spare time, he plays golf and reads as much as he can.

Educational Travel B R I A N K . S M I T H | I N S T RU C TO R

Brian K. Smith, who is leading our cultural tour to China this May, has a long history with both travel and Langara. He began saving up for his first international adventure as soon as he graduated from Langara’s Photography Technician Program in 1977. “Three years later, I went on a backpacking and train trip through Europe and the British Isles,” recalls Brian. “That was it – world travel became a passion.” Travel ties in neatly with Brian’s other lifelong pursuit: photography. He’s been a photographer for over 30 years and he is an accreditation judge with the Professional Photographers of Canada (PPOC) as well as the chair of their Lower Mainland chapter. While this trip is not a photography tour, Brian will share his experienced eye with his group. “Being a professional photographer, your eyes are trained to search out the interesting and unusual,” says Brian. “I like to show people this so they can get something more than the regular tourist snaps.” Travel is also a big part of Brian’s career. As an international photographer, he’s exhibited his work, participated in discussion panels, and given presentations on travel photography. “I think both photography and travel are about a continual education and exploration of our world,” he says. “Every new experience creates more depth to who we are.” Through his globe-trotting, Brian has connected with photographers from around the world. He has found that their different backgrounds and perspectives energize his own work. “We are all individuals who see, taste, feel, and hear things in our own way,” says Brian. Brian has travelled to China 11 times and he will be taking his group to many places he’s been before, including some of his favourite craft brew pubs. He says that one benefit of a group tour is that you can enjoy some experiences that would be hard to arrange alone. “Travel is important because nothing else can give an experience like being there,” says Brian. “When it comes to travel and photography, my energy is endless.“ Brian K. Smith has been to over 40 countries and is an accredited member of British Columbia Association of Travel Writers (Press). China: Fusion of New and Ancient departs in May 2018.

World Languages & ESL J U L I E M CI N TO S H | SU CC ESS S TO RY Visitors from Japan who find themselves at B.C. Place or the Vancouver Convention Centre are pleasantly surprised when they find a Canadian who – literally – speaks their language. “I love my job because I get to meet people from all over the world,” says Julie McIntosh, who works as a guest experience ambassador and event host. “When a training opportunity came up, she seized her chance to better connect with international visitors. “I immediately asked my manager which languages we needed on our team and Japanese was in the top three.” She chose to study at Langara for three reasons: we offer five levels of Japanese instruction, have a transitaccessible campus, and our evening classes fit her work schedule. While Julie had studied Spanish in high school, finding the time and energy to learn a new language while working a full-time job was a challenge. Fortunately, her dedication paid off. “This is one of the best decisions I have ever made,” says Julie. “A year later, I still love learning the language and I am amazed at how much I can communicate, read, and write.” One day, after getting stuck on a verb in an assignment, Julie felt discouraged. A few days later, she made a connection between a piece of dialogue on a Japanese reality show and a verb exception she had learned. “In that moment, the verb meaning I had been struggling with became so obvious that I laughed,” she says. “I realized that I really was absorbing everything and I was encouraged to learn even more.” Julie credits her success – she completed levels 1-4 in a year – with approaching her training as an experience rather than a task. She made new friends in class, who she texts with in Japanese, and her instructor Yoko Maruyama kept things fun with in-class exercises and games. Having lessons grounded in Japanese culture also helped Julie understand the language. “Japan’s ever-evolving culture is also shaping its writing,” she says. “Japanese is truly a culturally rich and engaging language.” Julie McIntosh will be returning for Level 5 in January 2018 and is planning to speak only Japanese when she visits Japan in 2019. Her favourite word in Japanese is omoshiroi (おもしろい) which means “interesting.”

LEAP Program LEAP uses an integrated approach that combines speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills. Skills are practised in the context of a variety of topics and academic subject material. Classes are dynamic and student-centred learning environments where students acquire language skills in a natural and meaningful way.

Foundation Levels (LEAP Basics to LEAP 2) The beginner to pre-intermediate levels of LEAP focus on the environment and culture of Vancouver and Canada. Through a variety of topics, materials, and activities, the classroom is transformed into a living language environment. Students develop their speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills while expanding their knowledge of Vancouver, Canada, and the world. Learning is further enhanced through interactive workshops and educational outings connected to course topics.

Academic Preparation (LEAP 3 to LEAP 8) The content for the intermediate to advanced levels of the LEAP Program is drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines. Each week, students practise all of their core language skills in the context of an academic subject. The level of critical thinking skills and the complexity of academic strategies increase as students progress through the program. LEAP prepares students to tackle university classroom content the same way as Canadian students whose first language is English.

J E N N I F E R P OW N A L L | S T U D E N T SU CC ESS Jennifer Pownall couldn’t have predicted that enrolling in the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Certificate Program at Langara would lead her back to a childhood passion. After working as a child care provider, columnist, and custodian, Jennifer has circled back to her first love: writing. “When I signed up for the program, I don’t think I fully realized how applicable it would be to the world of writing,” says Jennifer. She gained insight into the business considerations of publishing companies, book stores, and agents as well as marketing and sales strategies, but her initial goal was to explore self-employment and build up her business acumen. “My initial ideas about how I might be able to earn a living blossomed into a much more complex understanding of professional fulfillment,” says Jennifer. In the program, Jennifer found herself amongst a wide range of people with different goals and backgrounds. “Everyone had a place within the curriculum because it was designed with the broad scope of business in mind,” she says. “The program is a great fit for anyone interested in expanding their understanding of business operations, marketing strategies, and accounting principles.” For Jennifer, the program’s value wasn’t limited to learning how to run a business. While she draws on that knowledge on a daily basis, the program also made her a more confident person and a more inventive writer. “Since graduating, I have had an immense amount of success with pursuing and meeting my goals,” says Jennifer. Jennifer’s kept busy since she graduated two years ago. She’s been published in literary anthologies, started working for the Heart & Stroke Foundation, participated in the 3-Day Novel Contest, appeared in CTV’s Canada in a Day film, and had her first child. She’s now continuing her education with two creative writing courses at Langara. “I wanted to change the course of my life,” she says of her original decision to enroll at Langara. “Instead, I expanded my life. The most dedicated, passionate part of myself – the writer – became more fully realized.” Jennifer Pownall has led an eclectic life, exploring everything from animal husbandry to Zamboni driving. She recently completed a picture book written in heroic couplets and is currently planning a memoir.

JACO B T R A N | I N S T RU C TO R If you’re ever on campus and see a small robotic elephant roaming the halls, Jacob Tran is likely running it from a nearby laptop. The Intro to Coding instructor helped create a fleet of robotic elephants that have been a huge hit with students. “It’s not every day you see a baby robot elephant lumber down the halls, lift its trunk and blow its horn,” says Jacob. “Code allows us to breathe our impression of what life is into an inanimate object.” Jacob started out in the gaming industry and worked as a software engineer, but over the past 10 years, he’s brought his sharp mind and technical skills to the world of education. He was a senior instructor at the Vancouver Film School, where he helped develop their game design program. “I really enjoy crafting unique learning experiences that demystify technical challenges, empower creativity, and produce results,” says Jacob. “I love when students take the initiative to try and solve difficult problems or optimize processes plaguing them at work or in their daily lives.” While he’s been able to learn lessons from some of the most talented people in industry over the course of his career, Jacob’s introduction to coding involved playing and modifying video games on his brother’s 386 PC. “As an instructor, you simply plant the seed, and hope that some of your passion infects the people in the room,” he says. Whether students are approaching coding as a beginner or a seasoned programmer, Jacob says that Intro to Coding won’t just show them how code can be used to control robotics. They’ll also gain an understanding of the processes and language behind code, which is useful even if they don’t become coding masters. “Every sector is being optimized by code and technology: medical, financial, education, entertainment, etc.,” says Jacob. “It’s the most important skill a young person can add to their skillset.” Jacob Tran spends his spare time rock-climbing, snowboarding and doing jiu jitsu. His fondest memory of coding was releasing his first video game.

“A flower is not just beautiful. Through design, it can become a piece of art.” – Louisa Lam, Instructor

LEARN NEW SKILLS IN

FLORISTY REGISTER TODAY

L O U I S A L A M | I N S T RU C TO R Floristry instructor Louisa Lam has been teaching floral design for nearly 30 years, but her connection to plants started much earlier. “When I was little, I liked to grow plants and flowers,” she says. “I found flowers always gave people happiness.” Louisa developed her floral design skills by entering competitions in Canada and Hong Kong as well as joining professional associations. Louisa was the first Asian florist to obtain a membership in the Canadian Professional Floral Designer Association (CPFD) in 1991 and she was inducted into the American Institute of Floral Designers (AIFD) in 2009. Currently, she serves as the vice president of the AIFD North West Regional Chapter and vice chair of the AIFD National Membership Committee. “A flower is not just beautiful,” she says. “Through design, it can become a piece of art.” Being an instructor at Langara helps her stay current, as she likes to teach students new techniques and how to use trendy materials. Her students are diverse in age and background. Some are interested in floristry as a hobby while others want to acquire professional skills. “Once they have finished all the courses, most of them would like to apply the skills that they have learned to a future career or their own business,” says Louisa. In terms of careers, students might find their floral design knowledge helpful when looking to work as a florist, an event planner, or an interior decorator, among others. One of Louisa’s most memorable students enrolled in her floristry courses while studying business administration at UBC, and he now manages his parents’ wholesale flower business back in Asia. “My teaching philosophy is simple,” says Louisa. “As students begin, I stand in front of them. As they gain skills, I stand beside them. When it is time, I stand behind them.” Louisa Lam was the first official AIFD Certified Floral Judge and Evaluator in British Columbia. In 2005, she represented Canada at the Hong Kong Flower Show and received “Award for Outstanding Exhibit” in the International Category.
