Working together. MESSAGE FROM THE L ANGAR A COLLEGE FOUNDATION CHAIR
2017 was a year of growth for our Foundation as we continue to support Canada’s pathways college. Our foundation board expanded as we welcomed new members Kevin Price and Alec McLean. Two new staff members also joined the Foundation, increasing our capacity to raise funds and positively impact our students. Funds raised by our generous donors have fostered more teaching and learning opportunities across campus and enriched the educational experience for our students. With a record number of donors, new awards, scholarships and bursaries created, the Foundation was able to support more than 700 students. This support was valued at a total of $535,668, an average of $753 per student. Our donors also helped to create opportunities that enhance the Langara student experience. One example of this is the creation of the Community Cupboard, an on-campus food bank. The Community Cupboard will allow the College to help students focus on their studies instead of where their next meal will come from. The following report highlights some of the stories, partnerships and impacts that you, our donors, have created. As an alumnus and a donor, I know first-hand how funds raised can change a student’s life. As catalysts for student success, I am continually humbled by your generosity. It is a privilege to witness the impact that a donation can have on students’ lives. On behalf of the Foundation board and staff, our heartfelt thanks for your ongoing support. In 2017, Langara employees showed the impact that our community can have. From the success of our annual Support our Students celebration to the many scholarships created by our employees, the spirit of giving is alive at Langara. Current employees, retirees, and board and advisory committee members raised almost $135,000 to support student success and college initiatives. This support helped the Foundation to fund a range of initiatives including a new on-campus food bank for students in need, a new mentoring and scholarship program for women in science, and a scholarship for journalism students in honour of long-time instructor, Rob Dykstra.

Power of partnerships. COMMUNIT Y PARTNERS BRING X-FACTOR TO STUDENTS
Community partners are helping the Foundation offer an even brighter future for Langara students, making a range of new and exciting projects and experiences a reality. Partnerships can come in many forms. Whether it be financial support, mentorship, providing work placements, or other support, each of our partners are making a difference and helping to prepare our students for their future. We see the power of partnerships every day and the College is privileged to partner with organizations whose values and passion for students align with our own.
Putting the give in Giving Tuesday. LSU EXPANDS PARTNERSHIP TO SUPPORT STUDENTS
Giving Tuesday is a global day of giving celebrated around the world. In 2017, the Langara Students’ Union partnered with the Langara College Foundation on Giving Tuesday to highlight the issue of food insecurity, an issue that faces our students every day. LSU is a passionate advocate for Langara students and has been providing financial support through scholarships and bursaries since 1998, supporting another 23 students in 2017. Giving Tuesday further demonstrated LSU’s commitment to students, helping to create a new oncampus food bank, which will provide emergency food packages for students in need. Through the generosity of the LSU and other donors, the Foundation raised almost $10,000 for the Community Cupboard, making the project a reality. “We are so proud of the work we are doing with the Foundation,” said Gurbax Leelh, Interim Executive Director, Langara Students’ Union. “This partnership has enabled us to expand our ability to support the most vulnerable of our student members. It’s been amazing to be part of this project and see the impact that it is having on campus. We’re looking forward more future collaborations with the Foundation.”

Our students are going places. NEW PARTNERSHIP HELPS STUDENTS GET A GLOBAL PERSPECTIVE
A new partnership between the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF), Optimus Information Inc., and the Foundation offers a unique international work experience for students. The India Connect Program is the first-of-its-kind at Langara. The program provides two students with the opportunity to complete a work placement at international information technology firm, Optimus Information in New Delhi, India. The program is the first in a series of country-specific scholarship programs that are part of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada’s larger Asia Connect Program. Through this partnership, APF Canada and the Langara College Foundation will provide each student with a scholarship worth C$10,000 to assist them with their travel and expenses during the co-op placement at Optimus Information. “In an increasingly globalized world pivoting on Asia, young Canadians must seize the opportunity to live, work and play in other countries and cultures,” said Pankaj Agarwal, Managing Partner, Optimus Information Inc. The program provides an incredible opportunity for students to gain work experience in one of Canada’s fastest growing companies, broaden their intercultural skills, and challenge themselves – all of which are valuable preparation for a successful career. “To capitalize on the remarkable growth in India, young Canadians need to be India competent,” said APF Canada President and CEO, Stewart Beck. “They need the India-related skills and knowledge to help them better engage with this dynamic country.” The students started their four-month work placement in New Delhi, India in January 2018.

Scholarships and bursaries are a vital support for our students. As one of the most accessible postsecondary institutions in BC, Langara makes education possible for everyone and scholarships and bursaries make a real difference in our students' lives. The continued generosity of our donors assists Langara students on their educational journey. The financial supports available to students continued to grow in 2017 with over 300 scholarships or bursaries available to students. In 2017, the Foundation was privileged to provide more than $565,000 in scholarships and bursary support to over 700 Langara students, and create 23 new awards.

A story that started at Langara writes its next chapter. NEW AWARD FOR JOURNALISM STUDENTS
Barbara Gunn and Gary Mason first met while studying journalism at Langara, in what would be just the first chapter of their Langara story. Since graduating form Langara, Barb and Gary have gone on to inspiring professional careers, most notably in the fields of editing, column writing, and political reporting. Now the pair want to give back to the place where their story began. Barb and Gary continued their connection to Langara, Barb as a journalism instructor, and Gary as a founding board member of the Langara College Foundation. The new Barbara Gunn and Gary Mason scholarship will honour the place they both treasure, personally and professionally. “Langara has meant a great deal to both of us and we’re thrilled that we can begin to repay the College for the enormous impact it’s had on both of our lives,” said Gary Mason. “Barbara and I both remember our time on The Voice (although back then it was called The Savant) fondly – mostly. Although we recall, too, how intense that period was. But bylines from the paper often serve to be a student’s most important calling card when it’s time to go out in the cold, cruel world looking for a job. We are incredibly excited to move ever closer to what has been a dream of Barb and I for some time now.” The scholarship will recognize the journalism student who writes the best story or series of stories published in Langara’s student newspaper, The Voice.

Outstanding. 2017 L ANGAR A OUTSTANDING ALUMNI AWARDS
Langara College Foundation was proud to honour sports reporter and BC Sports Hall of Fame inductee Wendy Long, renowned figurative sculptor David Robinson, humanitarian Letitia Rose, and recent business graduate and entrepreneur Brittany Whitmore as the recipients of our 2017 Outstanding Alumni Awards. The awards recognize exceptional individuals who have enhanced the reputation of Langara through their impressive careers.
WENDY LONG – JOURNALISM (1981) In 1985, Wendy became one of only four female sports reporters in Canada and the first female to cover sports full-time for the Vancouver Sun. Over her thirty-year career, she blazed a trail for other female journalists and was a champion for amateur sports, covering multiple Olympic Games, Commonwealth Games, Pan American Games, and World Championships. In 2016, Wendy was inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame in the media category.
DAVID ROBINSON – FINE ARTS (1985) David is one of Canada’s finest figurative sculptors. Nationally and internationally renowned, his work is inspired by the human condition and incorporates a wide range of materials from traditional bronze, iron, steel, and silver to polymer-gypsum, cement, and hydrostone.
LETITIA ROSE – NURSING (2005) Letitia is a world-class humanitarian. After reading about Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders (MSF) in the book, A Cruel Paradise, by Canadian nurse Leanne Olsen, Letitia was inspired to become a nurse. She joined MSF in 2009 and has since become one of the organization’s most experienced public health nurses.

Brittany is one of Vancouver’s bright young entrepreneurs. While in her second-year at Langara, she founded her first company, Exvera Communications. Since graduating, she has worked for a start-up, Procurify; relaunched Exvera Communications, specializing in technology-focused communications; and founded TEDxGastown Women. In 2017, Brittany was named to the BC Business 30 Under 30 list in recognition of her achievements.
