Why College? Langara College is one of 26 colleges, university-colleges, universities and institutes that make up BC’s public post-secondary system. Choosing to study at one of BC’s public post-secondary colleges provides many advantages.

The College Advantage nn

College instructors are experts in teaching at the undergraduate level.

nn

Colleges ease the transition to post-secondary study. Class sizes are smaller, providing a greater sense of community among students and instructors and more personal classroom attention.

nn

Student services are readily available, friendly, and supportive.

nn

2

www.langara.bc.ca

Colleges offer first- and second-year university study as well as preparatory levels of study for those needing grade 11 or 12 equivalency prerequisites.

nn

Colleges offer many two-year Arts and Science credentials – associate degrees and diplomas – that allow students to complete a program of study in a shorter period of time. Should these students wish to pursue further study at the university level, these credits may be transferred to a BC or Canadian university (please visit the BC Transfer Guide website for complete details).

nn

Colleges offer excellent career programs. Community advisory committees keep the curriculum relevant to the marketplace. Practical experiences and co-op options provide valuable and often paid experience and networking opportunities.

nn

Colleges are more affordable. The savings of completing first- and second-year at college add up to thousands of dollars. An affordable education allows students the freedom to explore a wide range of choices before settling on a focused path of study.

Why Langara College? The benefits of an excellent education are life-changing. The freedom to choose, to understand, and to make a difference belongs to those with open and educated minds.

Freedom Through Knowledge

nn

Our students have won prestigious awards in academic achievement, creative pursuits, business competitions and community service including: Hnatyshyn Foundation Theatre Acting Grant; BC Business Simulation Competition; VanCity EnviroFund Award; and many film festival awards.

nn

Langara’s Athletics program has a rich history of success. Over the past 26 years, Falcons teams have won 22 CCAA National Championship titles, and 159 BCCAA Championships in addition to hundreds of individual player and coach awards at the provincial and national levels. The Falcons currently compete in badminton, basketball, and soccer.

nn

Each year, Langara College welcomes international students from more than 40 countries, and actively develops opportunities for domestic students and employees to participate in multicultural experiences on and off campus.

“We are teaching our students to have the tools to help determine their own growth. We try to bring the academic and real worlds together, which is, I think, a powerful combination.” Kelly Sveinson Chair and Instructor, Department of Chemistry Instructor, Environmental Studies Coordinator, Haida Gwaii Field Studies

New Award-winning Library/Classroom Building

Langara College’s spectacular new Library/Classroom Building, encompassing 7,700 square metres, opened its doors in September 2007. Its unique energy-efficient design has captured national and international attention, making it a timeless landmark on campus and in the community. The 3-storey building is outfitted with high ceilings, large windows, and architectural details creating a contemporary and elegant atmosphere. This state-of-the-art learning facility has media rooms, private group study areas, and wireless Internet access. “This new building will house the resources all our students need to make the most of their learning experience,” says College President Linda Holmes.

Surrounded by greenery, the building’s placement on campus has enabled the creation of new outdoor student spaces including a spacious quadrangle and reflective pond. The sustainable construction and overall design vision of the building has earned two prestigious recognitions: 2005 Canadian Architect Award of Excellence and 2005 Holcim Foundation Award.

Library/Classroom Building features: nn nn nn nn nn nn

Environmental highlights of the building include utilizing geothermal energy for heating and cooling which decreases the use of natural gas and electrical energy; incorporating “fly ash” (a by-product of power plants created during coal consumption) into the concrete mix which is more resistant to chemical corrosion, decreases landfill pollution, and reduces greenhouse gas emissions; and using wind energy for natural ventilation via an undulating roofline and wind towers.

International Students Many career programs are open to international students.

Co-operative Education Co-operative Education enables students to integrate academic studies with practical work experience. Students alternate terms of classroom studies with terms of paid, full-time employment with a participating employer. Many of the College’s career programs offer a co-operative education option. Online Studies For flexibility and convenience, we offer a range of online study options. The Nutrition & Food Service Management Program’s Food Services courses are delivered online, as well as many support courses. The Library & Information Technology Program offers an online option in collaboration with the University College of the Fraser Valley (UCFV).

Deans of Instruction

“Our new four-year baccalaureate degree programs in Nursing and Business have been extremely well received. Our students in those areas can complete their degree at Langara College and no longer need to transfer. Over the next few years, we expect to offer more bachelor’s degree programs in other applied areas giving graduates from our two year programs more choice: enter the workplace after two years, complete a bachelor’s degree, or work for a while, then return later to finish their degree.”
