WELCOME Langara College invites you to embark on the educational journey that’s right for you. You will benefit from award-winning faculty and programs, smaller class sizes, and lower tuition fees than many universities. We offer an extensive selection of first- and second-year Arts and Science university transfer courses with many of these courses being offered as a program of study designed to make a smooth transition to second- or third-year at a university (see pages 4-5). Your studies may earn you a Diploma or Associate Degree in Arts and Sciences. We also offer a broad selection of career programs (more than 30) in areas ranging from business and finance, to the creative arts, health, applied science, human services and community programs. These programs result in Diplomas and Certificates. Courses to help you prepare for college and college-level studies are also offered, and as a result of recent government legislation, Langara will soon be offering Applied Degree Programs. Our campus combines the convenience of an urban setting with a peaceful environment, surrounded by lawns, wetlands, trees, a golf course and a YMCA next door. Our central location on West 49th Avenue is easily accessible by bus, bicycle or car. You will meet students from all over the world on our campus, or you may choose to study in another part of the world through our External and Field Study programs (see back cover).

Arts and Science University Transfer

Seventy-five percent of Langara’s 8,000 students are registered in first- and second-year university transfer Arts and Science courses. Courses are offered in a variety of subject areas leading to Diplomas and Associate Degrees (see pages 4-5).
Career Programs
There are more than 30 career programs currently offered at Langara, most leading to either a twoyear diploma or a one-year certificate. Designed to provide students with skills for the changing needs of the marketplace, courses are taught by instructors with hands-on experience in their field. Some career programs are transferable to university. Many offer practicums, internships or co-op work placements (see pages 6-7).
College and Career Access Program (CCAP) CCAP is a one-term program that prepares students for a successful transition to postsecondary education and ongoing career development.
CCAP is designed for those who want to improve their academic or employability skills, or who want to establish a career path before starting post-secondary studies. Langara English for Academic Purposes (LEAP)
LEAP is a full-time intensive English and academic skills program that prepares students for college and university. It is designed for Canadian and International students whose first language is not English. Graduation from the LEAP program meets the English language proficiency requirement for entry into the Arts and Science program at Langara College. What You Need to be Admitted to Langara College

Secondary School Applicants
If you are currently in Grade 12 and submit an application to the Arts and Science program at Langara College, you will be admitted on a provisional basis. Your admission is conditional, and will be confirmed as soon as we receive your final official transcript indicating that you have successfully completed Grade 12. But don’t wait — apply early!
Applicants Transferring from Other Institutions
If you wish to obtain credit for courses taken at another post-secondary institution or to enrol in a course that requires prerequisites you have completed elsewhere, you must complete a Transfer Credit Request Form, available from the Registrar’s Office, and submit it with supporting official transcripts. You must apply for transfer credit at least two months before the semester begins.

When to Apply APPLY EARLY! Langara College starts accepting applications 11 months prior to the start of each term. Apply early. New students who apply early are given priority when registering for courses. Your course registration date is based ONLY on your application date, and NOT on your secondary school GPA. Students are encouraged to apply early to better their chances of registering in the courses they desire. Being accepted to Langara College, and receiving a Langara identification number, DOES NOT guarantee you entrance into your preferred courses. Acceptance and a Langara ID number allows you access to the registration process on a first-come, firstserved basis. Popular courses fill quickly. Early applicants have more choices.

A fully integrated daycare serves 62 children ages 18 months to five years. Priority is given to student families. � Disability Services — 604.323.5635
Services for students with documented disabilities include exam accommodations, course materials in alternative format, tutoring, referral and liaison with community agencies, adaptive equipment and educational planning. Co-operative Education Programs — Earn while you learn! Langara College was the first in BC to initiate co-operative education, where students integrate academic studies with related, practical work experience. Co-op students alternate terms of classroom studies with terms of paid, full-time employment with a participating employer. The primary goal of co-operative education is to help students develop the hands-on skills and confidence necessary to succeed in today’s competitive job market. DESCRIPTION
Business Management
Provides training in a variety of business subjects to prepare grads for management positions in all types of businesses. Program includes electives and the option to change study focus.

Computer Information Systems
Comprehensive program for students interested in business-oriented computer information systems. September, January or May start date.

Financial Management
This program includes practical skills in accounting and proficiency in business decision-making and analysis. Many of the courses are university transferable or transferable to professional accounting associations.

International Business
Provides knowledge of the history, culture, economies and business practices of the world’s major trading blocks. This is a rapidly growing discipline with many job opportunities.

Marketing & Sales
Prepares grads for sales, advertising, marketing and management careers in the business, retail and customer service fields. Focus is on the principles and practices of target markets, distribution channels, marketing research, advertising & sales.

Small Business Entrepreneur
This two-term Certificate program is designed to assist entrepreneurs with the initial stages of their small business development.
Criminal Justice
A mix of university transfer courses in criminology and related arts, and skills-based non-transferable courses. Provides preparatory education and some training for those interested in a career in law enforcement, criminology or security.

Library & Information Technology
Prepares students for technical duties in libraries and information centres, acquiring, organizing and retrieving information. Work is usually done under supervision of a professional librarian.

Nutrition & Food Service Management
Prepares students for careers in food service management in health care and membership in the Canadian Society of Nutrition Management.

Display + Design
Career positions in the display and special event industries. Each term offers studio courses in 3-dimensional design, interior design, graphic design, plus business and academic courses. Second-year studios use design software on Mac computers.

Fine Arts
A full-time visual arts program involving 35 to 40 hours per week of studio practice plus course work in art history and English. Most course credits are transferable to fine arts programs at post-secondary institutions in BC and Canada.

Journalism - Diploma
Prepares students for a career in journalism at community papers, dailies and magazines. Provides a basis for those who want to work in broadcast journalism. Students learn by working on the program’s weekly newspaper, The Voice.

Journalism - Certificate
An accelerated program for those with extensive post-secondary background.
Professional Photo Imaging
Prepares students for a variety of photography careers. Topics range from commercial photography to quality control of photographic processes. Assignments involve laboratory and studio work.

Publishing: Techniques & Technologies
Covers the print-based graphics and photo-intensive publishing sequences, as well as writing, editing and new media publishing, from concept to finished product. Provides comprehensive training for those who wish to enter the increasingly diversified publishing industry, or set up their own graphic design or electronic publishing business. Teaches new techniques for those already in the industry who wish to upgrade their skills.

Theatre Arts/Studio 58 Acting Option: September or January start date
Studio 58 trains committed and talented actors to become contributing members of the professional theatre, film and television communities. Students receive training through a combination of intensive classes and performance participation in Studio 58 productions.

Production Option: January start date only
Studio 58 trains those who want a career in the technical side of theatre and the other performing arts. The program also provides a background for the film and television industry. Students receive training through a combination of intensive classes and backstage participation in Studio 58 productions.

Collaborative Nursing
An 11-semester Baccalaureate program, of which Langara College offers the first seven semesters. The remaining 4 semesters may be completed at any collaborative partner site. Early Childhood Education Special Education Post Basic
Designed to prepare graduates of the ECE Diploma program to meet the requirements of the Community Care Facilities Branch’s Early Childhood Educator Special Education Credential. Continuous intake of applicants.
Education Assistant
Nine-month, full-time Certificate program that prepares students to work in schools with children and adolescents with disabilities. Blends the study of theoretical principles with practical experience through coursework and three practicums.
Recreation 4 Stream Options
Foundation program — learn the values and benefits of recreation — have a keen interest in effectively dealing with people, programs, budgets, leadership and group processes.
1 Recreation (Leadership)
For students to develop experience as a recreation leader. This flexible program allows students to include additional and specific university transfer courses in their program.

2 Recreation (Enterprise)
Prepares entrepreneurial-minded graduates to deliver innovative recreation programs as contractors or while working for an agency. Courses blend recreation program design and leadership with small business development and management skills.

3 Recreation (Service Delivery)
For those students who are changing careers and have work experience in the field, this stream has specialty courses in program planning, special event design and management, and community recreation.

4 Recreation (Facilities)
For those students who are changing careers and have either paid or volunteer experience in the field. This stream has a series of courses that focus on recreation facility maintenance and operations management.

Social Service Worker
This nine-month program provides a combination of academic, experiential and community-based learning, including two practicum placements. Focus is on the theory and practice of delivering basic social services.
