We’re growing with you. L ANGAR A AND SUSTAINABILIT Y

At Langara College, we are deeply committed to being part of a sustainable society. We understand that the world's resources are finite and that our choices, both big and small, impact our world and future generations. As part of our vision, we continue to upgrade existing infrastructure with an eye to architectural excellence and innovative sustainable design.

SUSTAINABLE CONSTRUCTION All of our new buildings on campus are built to LEED® Gold certification standards and boast special green features with the goals of improving energy efficiency, and reducing the impact of our campus on the environment, while enhancing the health and well-being of the Langara community. Green building features include: • Enhanced air quality • Better lighting/daylight exposure • Improved thermal comfort • Improved energy efficiency • Spaces that enhance social interaction

C Building and Students’ Union Building • Voluntary seismic upgrade of C Building to extend building lifespan and improve safety • Geo-exchange Energy Transfer System reduces greenhouse gas emissions and saves energy • Low VOC paint with reduced levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) • Thermoplastic Polyolefin (TPO) reflective roof to reflect the sun’s energy and reduce the building’s cooling costs

Library/Classroom Building • Concrete mixed with fly ash (by-product of power plants created during coal consumption) to increase resistance to chemical corrosion, decrease landfill pollution, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions • Wind energy generated by an undulating roofline and wind towers for natural ventilation • Solar shading to prevent the sun’s heat from warming the building

OUR SUSTAINABLE CAMPUS

• Energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems

Langara continues to improve our environmental impact as well by: • Reducing energy use and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions • Offering programs and courses on environmental and sustainability issues • Conducting alternative energy research projects • Upgrading to more energy-efficient information technology equipment • Encouraging use of alternative transportation - public transit, bicycles, carpooling, electric vehicles • Having recycling initiatives for near-zero-waste management (such as compostable cutlery, plates, etc.
