A Very White Christmas
I
grew up in this area, and to me as a boy, the concept of a “white Christmas” was quite unusual. There were occasions when there was snow on the ground on Christmas Day, or perhaps a few days later, but it was enough of a rarity that every big snowfall was clearly remembered. One such year was the winter of 1964. I can’t say for sure if there was snow on the ground on Christmas Day, but there certainly was a few days later. In fact, there was a lot of snow — more than was usually seen here.
cancelled that year, but we set out and made it there without incident. However, the trip back was another story.
Princeton as well. The levels of snow in the mountainous areas of the Hope-Princeton were staggering, but the road was cleared and we made it home that evening.
We headed back home via Kamloops and Highway 1. There was lots of snow everywhere. When we got to the Fraser Canyon, the challenges set in. The road was closed at Boston Bar because of an avalanche, and there was no word as to when it would reopen.
Just a week later, on Jan. 9, 1965, the highway was partially destroyed by the Hope Slide. Much of it was buried under 47 million cubic metres of rock, and four people died. One of them was an Aldergrove resident.
We had already been travelling for hours, but we had to head back. We went back to Ashcroft, where my aunt and uncle lived, and stayed the night with them.
Every time I pass that way, I remember that Christmas season of 1964 — and all the snow we saw both here and on our travels.
While the highway was rebuilt and reopened fairly quickly, the evidence of that massive slide, which was triggered by a small earthquake, will be there for a long time.
The next day, the road was still closed and conditions remained grim. However, the HopePrinceton Highway was open, so we headed to Spences Bridge and then down to Princeton via Merritt. In those days, that was a lengthy detour.
Our family often went on a ski trip for a few days between Christmas and New Year’s, and one of our favourite destinations was Silver Star Mountain in Vernon. That was a big adventure in those pre-Coquihalla Highway days, and we kids looked forward to it for weeks. The amount of snow that fell here made it appear that the trip might have to be
A merry Christmas to all our readers. While we may not get snow (and many prefer it that way), it’s still the same special time of year — a time to spend with family and friends, relaxing and thinking back over the past year, and ahead to 2011.

The 5 Senses & Winter

R
eporter Natasha Jones and contributor John W Ireland explored the effects of winter on their senses, and here they offer a few observations.
TASTE What is winter without the taste on the tongue of a G&T — gin and tonic to those who don’t know smooth. What is winter without the scraps of Christmas leftovers — bubble and squeak, and mince pies warmed in the oven and served with custard, custard that is smooth and creamy and has to be absolutely lump-free or the whole day is ruined. Winter nosh means the luxury of a weekend breakfast in bed; a cosy, lingering tete a tete over twin mugs of gingerbread latte. It’s the first dinner party of January, where you will away the winter with a
Taste...Smell... steak on the barbecue, plonk and syllabub, summery fare that does the palate good whatever the season. Winter fare is tangerines, nuts, homemade soup, hot chocolate, the first slice of the loaf of bread that’s just come out of that oven, topped with a film of butter and strawberry jam you made last summer, tastes that evoke fond pleasure of things to come as the year opens up to spring. Ambrosia, all of it, and how fortunate it is that we have such an abundance in our part of the world. — NJ

locomotive lurching up a steep grade. She glances at me as I stand waiting for my silver mug, and quick smiles are exchanged. As she works the various levers and nozzles, I close my eyes and lean in closer, nostrils flaring in anticipation.
How is it that winter serves to fine-tune our senses, so that we are far more aware of our surroundings and the way that they look and feel and smell?
The inhalation is filled with wondrous vapors — the comforting aroma of hot milk, the zap of nutmeg, the quick surprise of ginger, and the thick perfume of eggnog practically begging for a shot of the good stuff.
Maybe the cold somehow makes the air thinner, or it’s a memory imprint from eons long past, when our ancestors only survived the harshest season by being hyper-perceptive.
There is coffee here too, a special Christmas blend brimming with trace elements of steaming fields rich with black earth and plump, red berries.
She has returned to work now, stationed behind the metal and black plastic apparatus that proceeds to spew steam into the air with all the explosive force of a
I transport my grail of spiced liquid to a table and carefully open the book I have just purchased. Ignoring my fellow literary voyagers, I press my face into the pages. There is a scent here as well, of paper and inks, of oiled presses and hot lead.
I draw the crisp winter air deep into my lungs. There’s no mistaking the scent of the coming storm; it’s a delicate suggestion, as light as a snowflake, and just as difficult to describe.
And, even more than that, there is the promise of escape, even for a few moments, from the darkling clouds outside that, even now, have released the first gentle sprinklings of winter. Just as I’d predicted. — JW

Sight...Sound SIGHT Ask me for an enduring vision of winter and I do not instantly conjure up stockings hung by the chimney with care, dazzling displays of sparkling lights or presents underneath the tree. What I see is ice, acres and acres of ice, great open stretches of frozen quicksilver stretching to the horizon. Or at least to the edges of this gravel pit where we have chosen, this particular shivery day, to take a timeout while the maddening world carries on without us for a few blessed hours. Warm breath steams from between chapped lips as we lace up our skates while seated on jackets or blankets to prevent the cold from penetrating our bones before we have even put sharpened metal to frozen water. We are an eclectic lot: Teammates, friends, even friends of friends, and how seriously we take this game of pickup hockey is reflected in the varying degrees of equipment we strap on. Those speed merchants, who both dipsy and doodle, have little more than skates and a stick. Their woolen toques appear brighter than those worn by other, less-skilled
practitioners, as if to provide a better target for anyone looking to make a quick breakout pass. Others have taped shin guards of sweat pants or jeans because in this environment, where Mother Nature is the Zamboni, every puck is of the frozen variety. Hockey gloves are replaced by those of the winter ilk, providing protection against the cutting wind rather than anyone silly enough to be caught slashing amongst comrades. The game itself is a tumult of motion, played out on a canvas so grand only winter could possibly have provided it. The puck, somehow blacker on natural ice, skims from stick to stick, now thudding into a goaltender’s pads, now bulging the twine at the back of the net, now fired deeply into snowbanks that act as impromptu boards. No scores are kept for there are no winners or losers here. The only goal of the exercise is to nurture the camaraderie that comes from playing a game the way it was first invented. Here, as we furrow the ice and stumble over stubborn weeds stabbing through the slick
surface, we are all equals in our love of the sport.
bia, to truly know and appreciate the senses of winter.
No superstars, no prima donnas, just a bunch of guys skating like bulky jitterbugs across the frozen expanse of time and memory. — JWI
The crunch of the snow underfoot, the stomping of your feet as you try to dislodge snow from the soles of your boot; the soothing trickle of the tiniest stream as it tries to defy an ever thickening cap of ice, the sound of the largest slab of cedar you ever saw, split in two by a man’s effortless swing, the same chunk of wood later in the day crackling and sparkling in the fireplace as the day bids adieu.
SOUND For a Brit whose father was a pianist and whose mother sang in the community choir, the enduring sounds of Christmas were firmly rooted in the classical. My parents’ musical abilities, sadly, did not extend to their fifth and final child. Happily, though, the appreciation for classical music did. But it is not the strictly classical that epitomizes for me the sound of Christmas and winter.
And if the sound of silence, as the song of the Sixties goes, is golden, it surely is the mysterious, perhaps even eerie, quietness that descends when the winter sky turns black. — NJ

inter’s touch is ... turning your face skyward to catch the petal softness of the season’s biggest and prettiest snowflakes, a bracing wind whipping against a pair of legs you slipped into the sheerest stockings instead of lined trousers; it’s your little boy’s icy hands held against the warmth of your neck, your warm lips against your small daughter’s cold and tearstained face after she lands, too hard, on the icy footpath. And, later, it’s that jolt you feel when the laughing tykes surprise you with a snowball down your back, a tiny ball made with their little fists, but big enough to chill you to the core. And winter’s touch is the maddening itch of chilblains as you hold your frozen feet towards the fire. Winter’s touch is the welcome embraces and hearty handshakes of friends and loved ones gathering to see in the New
Year. It’s the prick of the holly as you take down your Christmas decorations, the feel under your fingertips of the embossed and glittery Yuletide greetings as you read them for the last time. The touch of winter is the ice that collects under your fingernails as you scrape the frosty window in the bathroom, the dampest and coldest room in the house. It’s the chilly morning air that you hurriedly warm up with a match to the kindling, bringing the living room warm and alive before the first of your loved ones ventures downstairs. Winter’s touch is the shock of water you splash on your face first thing in the morning, and it’s the warm and calming drink you cradle in your hands last thing at night.

Christmas Dinner at Dairy Queen not just businesses. I wanted to give back, everyone has been so kind to us since we bought the store three years ago,” she said.
A
t a time of year when people are spending time with family or shopping up a storm at the mall there are those who, sadly, spend this time of year alone. Be it because their family have all moved away, have passed on or are visiting elsewhere for the holidays. It can also be particularly hard for underprivileged and homeless individuals, but no one should be alone on Christmas.
The store will open at 4 p.m. on Christmas Day and stay open until the people stop coming. There is no need to call ahead and book a spot, the French family will be happy to help anyone who shows up. Despite limited seating, French is determined to help as many people as possible.
“I’m not turning anyone away. If they have to wait, we will make them comfortable. We can fit about 80 people while they’re eating,” she said. “We’ve never done this before so we don’t know what to expect.” While they may not be spending Christmas at home, French and her husband are making this event a family affair. With help from their sons, sons’ girlfriend, a daughter-in-law and her parents, there is sure to
be enough festive spirit to go around. Don’t expect to see hot dogs, hamburgers or fries on the menu. French is preparing a menu of turkey, vegetables, mashed potatoes and dinner buns. But with one slight difference, Dairy Queen Ice Cream Cake will be sliced up and handed out for dessert. Additionally there will be gifts given to any children in attendance. “We usually draw names and buy presents, but this year we’re putting all that money in a pot and going out to buy the kids colouring books, puzzles, play-dough, etc,” she said. “The food is being donated.” French wants the community to know this event isn’t just for the homeless residents of Langley. It is also for anyone less fortunate or feeling lonely during the holiday season.
This is where Cindy French and her husband Gord come in. The pair has generously opened their Langley City Dairy Queen location to anyone who is alone and in need on Christmas. With their children grown and out of the house, they couldn’t think of a better way to spend Christmas day than helping others and making them happy.
“There are elderly people who don’t have anyone and I want them to feel like they’re a part of something,” she said. “Some people say ‘I won’t pay my phone bill because I have to buy Christmas presents or a turkey,’ and people don’t have to do that.”

Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? …He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these, you did for me.” Matt 25: 35-45 The Faith community of Langley take these words of Jesus Christ very seriously as Jesus speaks of feeding the hungry, clothing the naked and welcoming the stranger. This is more than simply a common value

This year’s Christmas feast is sponsored by Forth-Rite Construction. The meal begins with an uplifting message (food for the soul) and songs to provide a festive and friendly mood. Southgate Church will hold a traditional candlelight service on Christmas Eve. The service begins at 7:00 PM. The Church is located in the old Langley Mall 120-5504-204 Street, For more information call 604-532-7769. Brookswood Baptist Church will be holding their

This value is especially demonstrated at Christmas time. The Faith Community work hard to feed the bodies and the souls of Langley residents who are disadvantaged by poverty and loneliness.

Community in Langley Christmas Eve service at 6 pm this year. The message will be The Timeless Christmas Story. Brookswood Baptist Church is located at 20581 - 36 Avenue. Call 604-530-5440. Home Church Langley celebrates Christmas by helping people both internationally and locally. In October, the church participated in Operation Christmas Child. The members of the congregation were invited to pack one or more small shoeboxes with Christmas gifts for boys and girls in poor and troubled nations around the world. A yearly event, this year the church packed a recordbreaking 165 boxes. Locally the Langley Food bank will benefit from an initiative called “Phil D. Buggy”. This initiative was kicked on November 14th and will continue until December 19th. Congregation members have been bringing non perishable food items and hygiene products to church and assembling the buggies. They will be delivered to the Food Bank just in time for Christmas. For more information call Pastor Jim Moerman at 604-514-4663. For many in Langley it wouldn’t be Christmas without the annual Christmas Dinner held at St Joseph’s Catholic Church on Christmas Day. For over 15 years, the con-
gregation and community volunteers have organized this eagerly anticipated dinner. They want to make sure that the disadvantaged and lonely members of the community have a time of being uplifted and at the same time enjoy a fantastic Christmas dinner. The doors open at 4:00 pm and there will be time to share some conversation and fellowship. Dinner follows at 5:00 PM. Fondly known as St. Joes the church operates both a soup kitchen on Tuesdays. These programs will continue throughout the holiday season. The church is located at 20676 Fraser Highway. Call 604-534-3303. The faith community has also joined together to provide two more weekly drop in centres for the homeless and those in need of help. These are on Mondays at Langley United Church from 9am-noon and Thursdays at St Joseph’s from 10am-2pm. The churches involved with these centres are St Joseph’s, Langley United, Brookswood Baptist and Southgate. The Salvation Army kettles have been a familiar sight on the streets of Langley for over 20 years. This year The Salvation Army is hosting a Christmas dinner at the Gateway of Hope Shelter. (5787 Langley By-
Pass) The doors open at noon on Christmas Eve. There will be two sittings and everyone will receive a small gift. Throughout the holiday season, armies of volunteers have ‘manned’ the kettles to raise funds to help the poor and needy. The Salvation Army provides hampers for seniors, single people and adult children who aren’t eligible through the Langley Christmas Bureau. Call 604-514-7375 for more information. North Langley Community Church, in the spirit of the season, invited the residents of Walnut Grove to two special evenings. “Making Spirits Bright, an Evening of Story and Song” was presented on December 10 and 11th and was well received. The church will host two Christmas Eve Services at 5 pm and 7 pm. Everyone is welcome! Call 604-888-0442. North Langley Church is located at 21015 - 96 Avenue. Living Waters Church has been celebrating the advent season. From November 28th to December 24th, the church offers food for the soul and tips on how your family can prepare for one of the most holy days in the Christian Calendar. Their website at www.lwchurch.ca offers many ideas on how a family can worship fully, spend less, give
more and love all. The church is located at 9095 Glover Road in Fort Langley. Living Waters will be holding a traditional candlelight service on Christmas Eve at 6:30 pm. On Sunday, December 19th, Christian Life Assembly (CLA) will present a special service that will feature their Sunday school children. CLA offers three Christmas Eve services at 3 pm, 4:30 pm and 6 pm. These are traditional family services. On New Year’s Eve, Christian Life Assembly invites the community to a special New Year’s Eve Service. This highly energetic service starts at 10 pm and concludes at midnight. Langley’s faith community celebrates Christmas in many ways. They share the commonality of providing food for the body, mind and soul. A holy time for Christians, the Christmas spirit is abundant in Langley at this time of the year. The words of Jesus regarding the treatment of the hungry and the lonely are taken very much to heart by Langley’s Faith Community and together they wish everyone a very meaningful and Merry Christmas.

Why not give a gift that keeps on giving? Consider supporting something that that can help Langley’s wildlife, or benefit Langley’s hospital, or beautify the community. Everyone on your Christmas list will get a unique and meaningful gift and you’ll get the tax receipt. It’s win win. Here are some bright ideas to make Christmas a little nicer for local charities and make you look like a hero as well!
Charitable Critter Care Wildlife Society One of the charities that is sometimes overlooked is Langley’s Critter Care Wildlife Society. “As their habitat disappears we are the last stop for sick, wounded and orphaned mammals.” says Gail Martin, the Founder and Executive Director for the internationally renowned Critter Care Wildlife Society. “We are the only center in Southern BC that does this kind of work.” she said. Last year, the volunteers at Critter Care nursed and cared for more than 1,200 hurt and orphaned animals for rehabilitation into the wild. Just in time for Christmas, Critter Care operates a small gift store on site. You will find B.C. wildlife Christmas cards, sweatshirts, animal boxes, socks, a fantastic 2011 calendars and lots more. Every visitor can meet Hoover, the bobcat. The store operates from Dec. 6 to 20. So there is still lots of time to get your Christmas shopping done. Call 604-5302054 for hours of operation. Critter Care is a non-profit society and for a donation of over $10 you will receive a tax receipt. For a minimum donation of $20 you can

Giving this season is designed to help the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation and lift the spirits of patients, staff and visitors alike. This is the fourth year since the inception of this fundraiser and so far it has raised over $20,000.00 for the Langley Hospital Foundation. Each year the Rotary Club is given a choice of instruments they can purchase with the funds. Drop in and have a look at the colourful and beautiful trees. At the same time, make a donation to our hospital on the hill. You will be given a tax receipt and the warm fuzzies are optional.
sponsor an animal for Christmas. In addition to a tax receipt you will receive a festive holiday certificate.
Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation O Christmas Tree, is a project of the Langley Central Rotary Club and benefits the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation. The Rotary club purchases Christmas trees and ‘sells’ the opportunity to decorate them to local businesses. Depending on where they will be located in the hospital they cost between $200.00 and $500.00. Launched the first week of December there are 20 trees on display. This fund-raiser
Also in support of the hospital the 20th annual Festival of Trees kicked off at Newlands Golf and Country Club on November 24th. This event for local businesses is very popular and has raised thousands of dollars. Local businesses and organizations were offered the opportunity to purchase and decorate Christmas trees for display at Newlands Golf & Country Club. There are
Give Generously for the Holidays and all year long!
16 trees on display until Christmas Day. For a minimum donation of $2.00, you can vote for your favourite. Make a point of visiting Newlands to soak up some Christmas spirit and cast your vote today. If you can’t make it to either of these events you can give online at www.lmhfoundation.com or by mail (cheques only please) or you can respond to the Christmas mailer. Call The Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation at 604-533-6422 for more information. It’s a unique gift that will keep on giving.
Langley City Parks Foundation Township of Langley Parks Donation Program This year consider giving a gift to your community. The Langley City Parks Foundation can offer you a number of items that you can purchase either in your name or to remember someone special. In 1979, the Langley City Parks Foundation was established as a non profit society. The foundation was created to provide a means for individuals, groups and organizations to make donations toward park improvement projects in the City of Langley and
receive a tax receipt. There are a number of items to choose from such as commemorative trees, two types of park benches, wooden picnic tables and more. You can’t argue that this certainly is a unique gift and one that is much appreciated. A brochure is available online at www.langleycity.ca or you can pick one up at Douglas Recreation Centre, Timms Community Centre and Langley City Hall. Call 604-514-2800 for more information. Similar to the Langley City Parks Foundation, Langley Township has a parks enhancement program as well. In addition to trees and benches, you can purchase a drinking fountain, a community notice kiosk or even a doggy bag dispenser. The sky’s the limit. For information about the Parks Donation Program contact the Township of Langley at 604-532-3504 This year, make your gift choice a unique one and support one of Langley’s charities. It truly is better to give than receive. You’ll see!

I
t is a running joke that men leave their Christmas shopping until the last minute, then cram into the mall at 5pm on December 24 to grab whatever they can find. It is a stereotype perpetuated by stories of women who anticipate a romantic gift but unwrap the box to discover a dust buster, or those who, after months of hinting about the perfect pair of earrings, receive yet another scarf. Personally, I couldn’t live without my dust buster. And there is nothing wrong with scarves - unless, of course, the recipient already has nine of them. The problem with last-minute gifts is not the gifts themselves: it’s the lack of thought that goes into them - when it shows. Gifts don’t have to be expensive or elaborate, but they should express some-
Yes, there are a lot of people who don’t like to shop. And yes, Christmas is overly commercialized with way too much emphasis on spending and buying and materialism. But at the heart of Christmas is the idea of being kind to each other, of sharing with your loved ones. So if presents
are expected, and they generally are, make it easier on yourself by investing a little in the weeks leading up to the big day. While you are out and about, pay attention if something catches her eye, whether it’s a purse or a sweater, a set of wine glasses or something nice smelling for the bath. Whatever it is, take a mental note, then go back and get it and stash it away for later, alleviating the need to dash out on Christmas Eve and answering the question, “What should I get her?”

She will be thrilled not just that you got her something she wanted, but that you noticed what she said - and remembered. And maybe she really would like a scarf: but make sure it is a colour and material she will wear, not just something you grabbed because there was a stack of them on sale next to the check-out. Of course, draping it around her and telling her how beautiful she looks also goes a long way to creating a Christmas present that won’t soon be forgotten. Who needs mistletoe?

It’s Christmas All Over

C
hristmas in Canada is a mix of traditions from around the world. I sat down with some Langley folks who grew up in faraway places and shared stories from childhood Christmases. Scotland - Freda Parsons grew up in Aberdeen during the war years. There was very little in the way of toys and ingredients needed for shortbread and pudding was scarce. The rations they were on made everything a delicacy. There was no money for a tree but paper chains decorated the living room. Stockings were hung at the end of the beds and in the lucky years you night even find an orange or a few ‘sweeties’ in there. The gift of a lump of coal was a good thing, it signified luck and wealth and kept the fire going. One year Freda received a ‘Popeye’ doll,
what a treasure, but most years there were no toys. But there was always music. Each family member had their own special tune and took turns singing them around the old piano, and you never dared sing someone else’s song. Soon the neighbours would come over and join in. The only things that were not rationed were love and music.
village. One of the young men carried a star as they made their way from home to home, singing carols. Christmas dinner was not the dinner we have come to know. It was an ordinary dinner of salad, pasta, olives/cheeses, artichoke hearts in olive oil, and meat, if it was available, otherwise, it was fish. During the war, there was nothing like that.
Italy- Mario Sergi was born on the Istria Peninsula. Christmas was not celebrated in any overt way, just within the church. However, December 6th was called Sanicolo, St.Nicolas prior to WW II, and was Babbo Natale, Father Christmas post war. Special gifts were simple things like oranges, walnuts and hazelnuts.
Phillipines – Freda Cortes recalls that Christmas was the celebration of the solemnity of the birth of baby Jesus. It was a very religious time and focused on the children. The traditional celebration starts with Mesa de Gallo a dawn mass from December 16th -24th. Everyone is well dressed, especially the kids and everyone greets each other ‘Malipayong Pasko’ after the service then goes home for a big feast with such delicacies as roast pig.
Novena, the nine days before Christmas, was spent going to church every night. After mass, they were treated to ‘fritole’, sweet dough deep fried in oil and rolled in sugar and spices. Trees were decorated with small candle holders clipped on juniper branches, in which they placed a small bee’s wax candles.
Families would gather from other towns and islands and on Christmas day a huge party for the

the World Germany – Christine recalls a rather privileged childhood during the years of 1934 to 1945 living in East Germany. Christmas started with Advent, where the candles on the wreaths were lit for the afternoon and one got the first taste of homemade gingerbread and Stollen. The smell of this special Christmas baking had filled the house for days. December 6th was Nikolaus-Day, Christmas eve, shoes were placed on the windowsill and during the night Nikolaus would come and fill the shoe with sweets and nuts. After church the festive table in the dining room was filled with enjoy potato salad, European wieners and plat cold cuts, Christmas Eve was not on a big meal. Handmade gifts were always received with gratitude and appreciation. In 1945 our lives and our Christmas changed as we became refugees in West Germany. Christmas became a very modest celebration but the family spirit was alive and strong. Many of the old

traditions have been passed on to the next generation. Argentina- Sylvia Brooke recalls being an Anglo and protestant growing up in a Catholic country. At Christmas time the Argentinean neighbour children had to wait until January 6th, when the 3 Wise Kings, would bring them their gifts, leaving them by their shoes which had to be polished and left by the bedroom door. A turkey was cooked on Dec. 24th, and since it was summer, and quite warm, a Christmas meal was at lunch time on Christmas day. The Anglo families were up early to open presents, and then off to a Christmas day church service. The hymns and music is still one of the most vivid memories of those mornings. In the late afternoon family gathered, tea would be served, and we would indulge in all sorts of cakes, cookies and delicious treats which all our parents had brought. Now in the cozy glow of a Canadian Christmas, we love to think about those hot Christmas days.
