Frank Flaman F O U N D A T I O N

For over 15 years, Frank Flaman has personally funded and helped countless charities, both locally and around the globe. In 2005, he formally established the Frank Flaman Foundation to expand these philanthropic efforts, and in only six years, has brought aid to thousands worldwide. The Foundation is funded by Frank's share of the profits from the Flaman Group of Companies, and by private donations. The number of organizations that have received support from the Foundation is too long to list, but includes both local and global charities - to Frank, a needy person is a needy person, whether they live just down the street or thousands of miles away. Global charities include: • Operation Eye Sight: With Frank’s help over 5,000 individuals in the developing world have had their eyesight restored. • Mother Teresa Missionaries of Charity: serving

the “poorest of the poor” with more than 500 missions in over 100 countries. • The Leprosy Mission: Healing the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of people affected by leprosy living in the poorest areas of the world. • Salvation Army: The largest non-governmental direct provider of social services in Canada, providing support to society’s most vulnerable. • Oxfam: Tackling the root causes of poverty and inequity and helping people to create selfreliant and sustainable communities. • Mennonite Central Committee: The Frank Flaman Foundation assists MCC in their quest to ensure sustainable food sources, adequate housing, education and independent living. • Room to Read: Transforming the lives of millions of children around the world by focusing on literacy and gender equality in education.

Message from the editor Many things to do, places to go, people to meet. The Times’ annual Discover Langley Guide gives residents and visitors a wide variety of choices. Langley has many attractions, but they are not often formally known as such. There are special places like Williams Park, trails like the Fort-to-Fort Trail and many opportunities for agri-tourism, from Thunderbird Equestrian Centre to the many wineries in the community. There are special events — such as Canada Day celebrations and the Langley Good Times Cruise-In. Langley is a beautiful area. From the green fields of the many farms to the hustle and bustle of downtown Langley City and Willowbrook shopping areas, it offers many great contrasts. Outdoor activities are very popular in Langley, in all seasons. There is canoeing and boating in the Fraser River, hiking and biking, swimming at many fine local pools, and even a sandy beach at Aldergrove Lake Regional Park. Equestrian activities are a big part of the local scene, and the many horse facilities demonstrate why Langley is known as the Horse Capital of B.C. History is very important and visible in Langley. B.C. became a British colony at Fort Langley on Nov. 19, 1858, and the location of this important declaration is now a national historic site. The Fort offers many special activities year-round. Fort Langley is also home to the Langley Centennial Museum and the B.C. Farm Machinery Museum. In Aldergrove, a former telephone office has been turned into an attractive museum. Historic buildings abound all over

Langley, particularly Fort Langley and Murrayville. Langley Heritage Society has worked hard to preserve many early-day buildings, which continue to be used by present-day residents. Campbell Valley Park is also home to several fine historic buildings, including the pioneer Lochiel school house. Wildlife abounds here, in places like Campbell Valley Regional Park, and along the Fraser River. Sports and recreation are very important in Langley. A hub for this activity is the new Langley Events Centre, located at 80 Avenue and 200 Street. Other important sports facilities include McLeod Athletic Park, City Park, Aldergrove sports fields and several specialized facilities. There are also hockey rinks in Walnut Grove, Aldergrove, Langley City and Brookswood. Langley has become a very important shopping destination in the past 25 years. There is more commercial square footage in the Willowbrook and Langley City areas than in any other part of the Greater Vancouver region, outside of downtown Vancouver.Stores offer a wide selection of just about everything here, and shopping is not restricted to that portion of Langley. Fort Langley, Brookswood, Murrayville, Walnut Grove and Aldergrove also offer many fine and unique shopping destinations. Langley is a great place to visit and an even better place to live. Most people who move here don’t want to leave. This informative guide will show you why. ~ Frank Bucholtz, editor

Langley Infrastructure In a growing community like Langley, change is a constant. One area where change makes a big difference for the future is in improvements to infrastructure. Infrastructure is broadly defined as roads, bridges, civic buildings and other public investments. As a result of programs involving federal and provincial government contributions, a number of improvements are underway in Langley. One of the most notable is the new Nicomekl River bridge on Fraser Highway. This project, which is largely financed by the federal infrastructure program, is almost complete. It involves a new four-lane bridge over the Nicomekl River in Langley City, to replace an old structure that often was just inches above flood waters. As part of the project, a new traffic light is being put in as well at the junction of Old Yale Road and Fraser Highway, to allow access to Old Yale Road to continue. In an admirable display of co-ordination, Langley Township also plans to widen Fraser Highway from the City border east to 216 Street. This work is now underway. Another major project that is well underway is the park and ride lot just south of Highway 1, which is being built as part of the Port Mann Bridge replacement project and Highway 1 improvements. One of the goals of the Port Mann project, one of B.C.’s biggest construction projects ever, is to bring public transit back to the Highway 1 corridor and allow buses to move quickly, even when there is a lot of traffic congestion. The park and ride lot is a major component in this plan. It will allow rapid buses to pick up passengers in Langley and speed them to the Lougheed SkyTrain station on the Millenium line in Burnaby, in less than half an hour. Buses are to run every 10 to 15 minutes in peak periods. There will be parking for 800 vehicles at the new lot, built along 86 Avenue. There will also be a tunnel

beneath the freeway to allow buses and carpool vehicles easy access to the new HOV and bus freeway lanes. This is key to ensuring that the bus trip is a quick one. There are also bike and pedestrian trail improvements that will allow those who walk or cycle to the bus exchange to get there easily. Another major project with significant investment from senior governments is the 196 Street rail overpass and road construction project. This is funded through the Roberts Bank Rail Corridor program. Work will begin later this year on three rail overpasses that will connect 192 Street to 196 Street, with the longest overpass going over both the tracks and Langley Bypass. There will also be road improvements along 196 Street from 60 to 64 Avenues and several new traffic lights, in addition to a new road linking the overpasses along the 196 Street alignment. This project will likely be complete late in 2013. A new school. Lynn Fripps Elementary, will soon be under construction on 83 Avenue, east of 208 Street in Willoughbhy. It is scheduled to open in 2012. On the recreation front, three different projects are in various stages. Four new covered tennis courts will open in Willoughby Community Park, adjacent to Langley Events Centre, in April (this month). The privately-owned Sportsplex complex in Walnut Grove plans to add a third sheet of ice this fall, converting one of two concrete ball hockey playing surfaces to an ice rink. And the Township of Langley is planning to move ahead and add new playing fields in Aldergrove. ~ Frank Bucholtz

Al Anderson Pool Langley City staff are hoping to make a big splash when Al Anderson Memorial Pool opens for the season next month. The City is set to unveil a new-andimproved public outdoor swimming pool facility which will feature a brand new building containing family change rooms, new washrooms and new showers for the thousands of people who use the outdoor pool each summer. The new 3,000-square-foot building, which will also house a multi-purpose room, will be close to completion by the time the facility in City Park at 206 Street & 48 Avenue, opens for the season on May 13. Meanwhile, the existing building is getting a bit of a facelift, with plans for new fencing, a new roof, storage room and security shutters. Total value of the project was expected to be $1.6 million, with half a million dollars in funding coming from the federal government. Al Anderson Pool opened in 1963 and each summer, in addition to giving residents a place to beat the heat, it hosts a number of special events, including ’dive-in’ movie nights featur-

ing water-themed films, such as Jaws, Finding Nemo and Pirates of the Caribbean. There are water fights and youth band nights as well as special events to celebrate summertime holidays, including Father’s Day and Canada Day. It is home to the Langley Flippers Swim Club, which will host two swim meets at the pool this year. And, for the past 11 years, it has served as the swimming venue for the annual Tri-It Triathlon. "I think it’s one of our very special treasures — it’s a jewel," said Kim Hilton, the City’s Director of Recreation, Culture and Community Services. "It’s outdoors, it’s clean. We have great staff who return year after year." Over nearly five decades, the pool has become a community gathering place, she said. "People who took lessons there as kids are now bringing their own children (to learn how to swim)." ~ Brenda Anderson

Langley’s Airport Langley Airport is a strategically located field virtually in the middle of significant residential areas of both Langley Township and Langley City. With a colourful past as an emergency field for the Trans Canada Airway, it has a promising future, envisioned by airport manager George Miller as a centre of excellence for avionics, aerospace and rotary-wing skills training. Robin Currington, of the Canadian Museum of Flight, located at Hangar 3, 5333 216 St. at the airport, says the field was built by hand, by men in the Unemployment Relief Program, between 1933 and 1935. According to author Chris Weicht (Trans Canada Airway: An Aviation History) the field was built as an intermediate field or emergency landing strip, for Trans Canada Airway’s Vancouver to Lethbridge route. The field was completed and began service in 1938. When the Second World War began, the Royal Canadian Air Force established an elementary

flight training school at Boundary Bay, and Langley became a relief field, for pilots to perform “circuits and bumps or touch downs and take offs, out of Boundary Bay. After the war, Art Seller’s Skyways Air Services kept the field going through services which included crop spraying, forest fire fighting, and pilot training. Seller used the de Havilland DH82 C Tiger Moth for his crop spraying, and later, war surplus Grumman Avengers to begin his fire fighting service, later bought out by Conair, now Abbotsford based. The Flight Museum, open seven days a week, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., has 24 historic aircraft, including a Grumman, and a Handley Page Hampden, which served as a trainer during the Second World War, out of Sidney, on Vancouver Island. It crashed off the coast with no loss of life in 1942, and was raised in 1987. For information on the museum’s many

Discover Some Trails As cities and communities grow, our green spaces continue to shrink. As cities and communities grow, our green spaces continue to shrink. But both the City and Township of Langley are committed to creating more trails and parks for residents to enjoy. Throughout Langley is a large variety of trails for walking, running or biking that are sure to please any outdoor enthusiast, and one of the great things is that you don’t have to drive far to enjoy nature. Starting with the “Granddaddy” of them all is the Fort to Fort trail in Fort Langley which, at 12 to 15 km (depending on the route you take) will take you along the Bedford Channel portion of the Fraser River. Beginning at the Fort Langley Historical site the trail takes you to Derby Beach Regional Park, giving you stunning views of the river and mountains as you pass the luscious vegetation and wildflowers that grow along the path. Staying on the north side of the freeway, Walnut Grove has dozens of completed parks and conservation areas and a mecca littered with trails. One of the larger trails can be accessed from both Walnut Grove Community Park and 91A Avenue. From there, the possibilities are endless as

the trail is connected with almost all the other trails in the community. The trail itself covers most of the park allowing you to wind your way through the natural beauty of this community landmark. But if you want to cover more ground, continue on by way of the North West Langley Trail which will bring you to McClughan and Dorothy Peacock parks. Or take the West Munday Creek Trail which will lead you south through a wonderful conservation area. For those avid walkers, or those just looking for an adventure, as you walk along the North West Langley Trail you will stumble upon 200 Street or the Carvolth Trail; one of Langley’s bigger trails. Dog lovers fear not, Walnut Grove has you covered as well. Just south of 96 Avenue is the Langley Lane Greenway. Stretching between 208 and 216 Streets the trail features an off-leash dog park. So after a long, relaxing walk, your four-legged friend can run to his heart’s content. The ever-growing community of Willoughby is also home to the Carvoth Trail. Continuing on from Walnut Grove the trail eventually ends at 69 Ave. SERVING YOUR GLASS NEEDS SINCE 1977 — FULLY LICENSED AND INSURED

Langley Meadows Park is the place to be if you’re looking for trails that you can walk to. With a lovely trail that circles and bisects the park you don’t ever have to leave. But if you want to, head north from 64 Avenue along Willoughby Court, you’ll pass Meadows Edge Park and eventually come upon 68 Avenue. From there you can continue along Routley Trail or head west and make your way to Willoughby Trail. For those looking for something other than the Fort to Fort Trail why not try the Trans Canada Trail. Beginning on Glover Road at the old Albion Ferry Crossing, make your way to Francis Avenue, turn right on Church Street, left on Mary Avenue and finally make your way to 88 Avenue. Then just follow the road to your heart’s content. Despite being a smaller town Aldergrove residents have plenty of trails to choose from. Almost every park or conservation area has a trail winding through it. The largest is in South Aldergrove Community Park; entering the trail on 29 Avenue opens up several possibilities as you weave through the many playing fields on the grounds. In addition, the Fraser Greenway along Fraser Highway is perfect for family outings. The trail isn’t overly long and there is a playground to stop at and enjoy a few laughs. One of the more popular trails

in the community is Bertrand Creek Trail it takes walkers on a memorable tour of this lovely conservation area. Over the past couple of years the community has banded together to help keep the trail and creek clean. And of course, Aldergrove is home to the famous Aldergrove Lake Park. Operated in part by Metro Vancouver but nestled in the far corner of the township, this community gathering place is filled with more than enough trails for everyone to enjoy. Featuring Pepin Brook Loop and Rock ’N Horse Trail the park offers more than 10 km of hiking and cycling trails, as well as riding trails. So watch your step! Sadly though, the trails will be the only attraction at the park as Metro Vancouver has decided to close the lake due to health concerns. Even quiet little Murrayville has a few trails sprinkled into its midst. You can check out the soccer and baseball games while following the path around Denny Ross Park or tour the wood behind James Hill Elementary both of which are accessible from Old Yale Road. Why not work those legs and conquer Fraser Highway’s steady incline all while enjoying the trees in the Fraser Greenway. One of the most popular trails in Brookswood

would probably have to be the Noel Booth Park Trail. This completed trail weaves through the park’s six baseball diamonds and continues through the serene back woods. There is plenty of parking in the lot and along 36 Avenue for players and walkers alike. And while it may be managed by Metro Vancouver, Brookswood is where you’ll find Campbell Valley Regional Park. The mammoth of a trail system features 29km of hiking trails, 14km of riding trails and 1km of biking trails. Stretching from 20 Avenue to 4 Avenue between 200 Street and 216 Street this park is sure to challenge even the most active person in your family. South Langley Regional Trail is one of the hidden treasures Langley features. Stretching from 216 Street to 256 Street between 4 Avenue and 0 Avenue, this 11km trail is open to walkers, riders and bikers alike. One of the most beautiful portions of the trail is Irene Pearce Loop Trail in the Municipal Natural Park. This wooded trail is home to many wild animals and birds that raise their young here. Not to be outdone, the City boasts several parks and trails that are sure to thrill any nature lover. The romantic Sendall Gardens trails take you on a fabulous tour of this quaint little park. Passing the

legacy garden, greenhouses and duck ponds, you probably won’t ever want to leave. Make sure to go during spring blooming season as the park will be a plethora of colour. Not only is Sendall Gardens a great place to take a walk, it makes a wonderful setting for engagement and wedding photos. The park has parking onsite and access points on 49, 49A and 50 Avenues. Brydon Park itself is a magnificent nature reserve with trails galore, a water fowl habitat and its very own lagoon. But what makes Brydon Park even more appealing is that it is connected to almost every other park in the city. Beginning at 50 Avenue and following the trails of southward you can access Buckley Park and its many playing fields. Continuing on the same trail, this time going east, you will eventually stumble upon another of Langley’s many off-leash dog parks. Or, if you head north from 50 Avenue you will get the grand tour of Brydon Park before finally settling in at the popular Portage Park. Please note all trails and paved paths aren’t listed. C-LOVERS: THE ONLY PLACE TO GO FOR FISH & CHIPS C-Lovers Fish & Chips offers its customers great food and great service at a great value. It’s a simple strategy! Offer great food, friendly service, a family atmosphere and affordable prices and your business will be a success. That’s the formula that made C-Lovers B.C.’s favourite choice for fish and chips. C-Lovers has a growing reputation for offering some of the best seafood in the province. “Everything is made from scratch,” said Brad MacLeod, co-owner of the Langley restaurant. While C-Lovers is coming up on their 25th anniversary in B.C., C-Lovers Langley is coming up on their 15th anniversary in 2011. “We were regulars at the original C-Lovers in Coquitlam. It didn’t take long before we realized that we had to get one of these for ourself,” laughed MacLeod. Soon after, they opened their own franchise in Langley. “We started out as a 59 seat restaurant in 1996 and after expansion in 2003 we are now licensed for over 200 seats and are now Canada’s largest fish & chips restaurant.” said Rick Schindelka, co-owner. C-Lovers has quickly become famous for its great fish and

chips. The “All You Can Eat” fish and chips deal remains the most popular item on the menu. The meal includes fish & chips and a bottomless pop. “We were the first to offer all you can eat and it’s available on our menu Sunday thru Thursday for lunch and dinner, and Saturday for lunch until4 p.m.”, At C-Lovers “quality is the key and the goal of everything we do.” MacLeod said with a smile, and, “we make everything from scratch whether it’s our mushy peas, our fresh coleslaw, our c-food chowder (it’s not Manhattan and it’s not New England its c-food chowder an old Cockney family recipe.) It’s all made on premises daily. We also cut all of our own fish and chips whether it’s Alaskan halibut, local

cod or locally grown Kennebec potatoes (about 100,000 lbs. of fish and about 185,000 lbs. of hand chipped potatoes a year).” C-lovers prides itself on using only locally grown and purchased products to ensure freshness and great taste. Halibut dinners, cod, haddock, prawns…C-Lovers has something to please any seafood fan and if your not they have the best chicken strips ever. C-Lovers also offers people the opportunity to enjoy their meal in a fun casual atmosphere. “There is a great family atmosphere, you can bring your kids and the grandparents to C-Lovers,” explained Schindelka. “Word-of-mouth is our best form of advertising. People are always telling us that friends recommend our restaurant.”

Earthquake Preparedness 26 weeks to personal preparedness 1. Identify safe places in your home and on your property. Practice earthquake “drop, cover, hold” and evacuation drills using different escape routes. Your community may set up a reception centre for evacuees during an emergency. 2. Identify a family reunion place away from home but close to your regular meeting places between work and home or school. 3. Arrange an Emergency Contact person, along with other emergency phone numbers near each telephone and in each person’s wallet or backpack. 4. Stock your home with at least a seven-day supply of water for every family member and don’t forget to include water for pets. It is best to store at least four litres (1 gallon) of water per person. 5. Get a large portable container with a tight-fitting lid to use as an emergency evacuation kit. A plastic storage bin, suitcase or garbage can works well, particularly one with wheels. Choose an accessible location for the container near an exit or in a garage or storage shed and label the container. 6. Stock your home with several varieties of packaged foods, canned meats and dried fruit. Include a manual can opener. If needed, include infant supplies including disposable diapers, disposable bottles, formula, etc. Plan for at least a seven-day supply of food for each family member. 7. Add more food items and supplies for pets to your supplies. 8. Get a portable radio and extra batteries for your emergency kit. 9. Learn about hazards. Know the hazards in your community. Also do a home hazard hunt to make your home safer. Secure appliances and heavy furniture and move beds away from overhead objects like heavy mirrors and windows.

10. Prepare a first-aid kit that includes prescription medications, eyeglasses, bandages, sterile gauze pads, tape, scissors, tweezers, antibiotic ointment, hydrogen peroxide and other items such as over-thecounter pain pills. 11. Give every family member specific safety tasks to do in an emergency. For example, designate one person to be in charge of turning off electricity, one to collect the emergency container, one to track down family members and make sure people with disabilities or special health needs are provided for. Make sure someone is also delegated to looking after any pets. 12. Add a flashlight and extra batteries, along with candles and waterproof matches to your kit. 13. Add some dried soups and other items such as peanut butter to your emergency kit. 14. Check your insurance policies and make inventory records of your possessions. 15. Stock your kit with both large and medium-sized plastic garbage bags (orange or yellow bags make good visible signals). Large bags can also be used as ponchos, ground covers or blankets. Add plastic or paper dishes and cups as well. 16. Add a change of clothing for each family member to your kit. Be sure to include seasonal clothing (winter/summer), heavy work gloves and sturdy shoes. 17. Add additional canned or freeze-dried food like stews, tuna fish, baked beans and vegetables to your kit. 18. Enroll a family member in a first-aid course. Pack HELP/OK signs in your kit. 19. Assemble important documents like wills, insurance papers, medical records, credit card numbers, inventory of possessions, identification, etc.

Make copies and store originals in a fireproof/waterproof container that will be accessible if your home is damaged. Keep recent photos of family and pets to assist searchers to reunite you. 20. Add personal items such as toilet paper, handi-wipes, soap, detergent, toothbrush, toothpaste, comb, sanitary supplies, etc. to your emergency kit. 21. Add evaporated, canned or powdered milk to your kit. 22. Get a large bucket with a tightfitting lid to use as a toilet, and put it with your emergency kit. Use the bucket to store other emergency tools like an axe, a folding shovel, rope and powdered lime for deodorizing. 23. Add sleeping bags or blankets (emergency blankets take up less space) and consider adding plastic emergency ponchos to your kit. 24. Add more canned, freeze-dried, or dehydrated food products to your kit until you have at least a three-day supply for each family member. 25. Add a pocket knife, cutlery, a whistle and spare set of house and car keys as well as items such as books, toys and cards as well as a family photo album to your kit. 26. Meet with neighbours to discuss emergency preparations and the possibility of sharing items such as generators. Now you and your family are personally prepared for most emergencies. Remember to rotate supplies to keep them fresh. You may wish to donate goods to the local food bank before they reach their expiration date! ~ Langley Emergency Program www.langleyemergency.ca

Superior quality 1 and 2 bedroom homes We are home owners. Home ownership wasn’t something we’d considered until Cornerstone came along. One look at the showhome (nice) and a conversation with their mortgage-savvy sales team, and we were sold. We walked in on a whim, thinking, “There’s no way we can afford this”, and walked out on top of the world. Our folks agree -- Cornerstone is a smart decision. Marcon has a great reputation; they’ve been around as long we’ve been alive. And the best part is we can still afford to go on vacation!

Bard in the Valley – As You Like It Performance dates have been announced for the Bard in the Valley’s vibrant production this summer of William Shakespeare’s “As You Like It” directed again this year by Allan Thain. Everyone is invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair to enjoy this exciting theatrical family event - aptly called “Bard in the Park” - in a beautiful outdoor setting. Admission is free for the event slated for August 11 - 14/11, August 18 – 21/11 on the outdoor Spirit Square Stage in Douglas Park in Langley City and August 28/11 during the International Festival in Langley Township adjacent to the Langley Events Centre. Bard in the Valley Artistic Director Allan Thain said, “AS YOU LIKE IT” is one of Shakespeare’s classic comedies featuring mistaken identities and misguided love between Rosalind and Orlando. Touchstone the clown

and a supporting cast of some of Shakespeare’s most beloved characters also come to life on stage. He added, “It’s an utterly charming adventure and truly one of Shakespeare’s most ingenious comic inventions — and don’t be surprised to find yourself echoing Jaques’ famous line proclaiming: All the world’s a stage, and all the men and women merely players…” He added, “Again this year, The Bard in the Valley Society is also dedicated to the concept of making these performances both affordable and available to wide audience, and to nurture and promote an enthusiasm for the works of Shakespeare and other playwrights. We believe in One

Goal – One Passion – Shakespeare For Everyone.” Thain added, “Although the performances are free, this year we’ll be asking for donations to help cover some of the production costs.” Thain noted that the Bard in the Valley Company is still looking for individuals to help out back stage to handle props, set decoration, as well as, lighting and sound or be part of the stage crew. Call Allan Thain at 604-308-9584 if you want to get involved. For more Information about The Bard in the Valley Company you can visit www.bardinthevalley.com.

Aldergrove Lake Park Mother nature can be fickle, playing tricks with light and colour, sounds and smells. Here, in Aldergrove Lake Regional Park, she teases with her showy display of greens, from the flatness of the skunk cabbage leaves to the vibrant vine maple, its leaves turning translucent with the brightening rays of sunshine. Shrubs sport the last of the season’s thimbleberries, sassy nailpolish red berries which cast to ordinariness the pink of the Nootka rose. Alders, cedars, firs, maples and filbert trees form an honour guard to welcome visitors to the park, nestled in the southeast corner of Langley.

The paved entrance road swirls downward, past the picnic area, into a large parking lot where, as summer suddenly explodes, people flock to the beach. It’s still there, even though the lake has been drained and won’t be replaced. All around the old lake are seven miles of trails for walkers, horses and their riders, and cyclists. Plenty of room in this massive park of 700 acres. The trails lead to an amazing view of Mount Baker, farmers’ fields, and the "Bowl" where Metro Vancouver Parks organizes an annual Meteor Shower Watch, a stellar evening when the sky is clear.

Like Metro Parks’ other jewels in Langley, Aldergrove Lake Regional Park is no impediment to people in wheelchairs and strollers. The main vehicle entrance is on 8 Avenue, immediately east of 272 Street, and there are equestrian and pedestrian entrances on 272 Street and Lefeuvre Road. Camp Elkgrove group camp can be reserved by calling the Elks Recreational Children’s Camp Society at 604 513-0155. For information about Aldergrove Lake Park or other parks in the Metro Vancouver, call 604 432-6359, or visit www.metrovancouver.org. ~ Natasha Jones

Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation Making a donation is a precious gift. When considering Langley Memorial Hospital it is important to understand why your support is needed and the difference it can make in the lives of so many. The hospital’s last major expansion took place in 1996 – about 15 years ago. Today, the Langley communities are home to more than 130,000 people, and they continue to grow. There are 185 hospital beds which are in constant use. The hospital staff – both medical and administrative – are feeling the strain of having to keep up with such rapid growth in such a short time. Simply put — the Langley Memorial Hospital is experiencing an increase of need that is putting a strain on the building, its staff and equipment.

This strain affects community members in need of medical attention. Wait lists continue to grow. Emergency wait times get longer. Doctors and other hospital staff are working around the clock to keep the quality of healthcare the best it can be. The Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation is where the community can donate and collectively make a difference to loved ones and neighbours. Through the generous support of local businesses and individuals donors the Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation has been able to purchase, year after year, vital and much-needed medical equipment to help save lives. The Foundation team feels a deep gratitude for the strong support we receive from this exceptional community each year.

Despite today’s economic challenges, more than 15 pieces of medical equipment were purchased with community donations in 2010. Some of those pieces of equipment cost more than $50,000! This success is only made possible as a result of the unwavering support and generosity. The Foundation Team, led by our volunteer Board of Directors, work tirelessly to make a difference and we want to thank our donors for inspiring us with such a giving spirit. The Langley Memorial Hospital Foundation is committed to empowering this community to help provide the absolute best in healthcare today, tomorrow and in the future. People give for a variety of reasons. Some donors have been touched by patient stories and

feel compelled to give; some have been patients themselves and want to give back. Many believe in what the Foundation stands for – building the best possible healthcare in our community. Donors who give to the Foundation are making a long-term investment towards quality medical treatment at Langley Memorial Hospital. Their gifts support the newest medical technology, as well as medical research to help with the discovery of new and better treatments. Everyone has a different ability to give, but everyone has a common ability to make a difference. Please, join us and help us continue to make a difference! Businesses open doors for Aldergrove Aldergrove business people are working together as a team and they invite everyone to jump on the bandwagon. Several business people here have been working with the RCMP and Langley Township on establishing an Aldergrove Business Association (ABA) and it is now officially incorporated as a non profit society. Over the past year the fledgling group has concentrated on crime reduction, beautification and community service projects that have brought about positive results. “As a result of these activities, the crime level in Aldergrove has dropped significantly and pride in our community has soared,” said president Bruce Heslop. “Forming a business association was a natural progression.” The ABA is non-partisan, but will press for constructive dialogue and cooperation between the community

and political leaders, as well as with police. "The ABA will represent business to make sure the Township of Langley does what we need," said Heslop. The ABA has applied for grants to fund local improvement projects, as well as met with transit officials to push for better transit links within the community. The ABA is also working with the schools and other organizations such as Aldergrove Fair Days to help each other out, such as by providing volunteers for events and special activities, such as beautification projects. "We want to fill the empty stores and clean up storefronts. We want to encourage everyone to shop local," said Heslop, pointing to the looming

competition that is coming with the High Point mega-mall at the Mount Lehman interchange. The ABA is not a "business improvement association" and therefore does not levy a tax on property owners. Instead it is a registered non-profit society, primarily reliant on volunteers, and annual dues are $45. This is primarily to cover the cost of the ABA website. THe trade area covered by the ABA extends from Mount Lehman Road to 232 Street and from the U.S. border to the Fraser River. The website is www.aldergroveba.ca and information on the ABA can be had by emailing info@aldergroveba. ca or calling ABA president Bruce Heslop at 604-857-9191. ~ Kurt Langmann

Willoughby Park Drive by Willoughby Community Park on any weekend day, especially during the busy sporting seasons, and it is a hub of activity. The park, situated on 68 acres just east of 200 Street and south of 80 Avenue, offers a lit bit of everything for sports lovers. This June, work will be complete on the park’s third artificial turf field, which will be on the south side of the park. The existing two are side-by-side on the west side. While the first two are primarily for soccer and field lacrosse, the newest one is a multi-purpose field which will be used for both soccer and slo-pitch/softball. Langley Tennis World is a new covered tennis facility which has four courts and operates year-round. It is on the north side of the park, right next to the four outdoor beach volleyball courts. There is also a natural grass field, used for soccer and rugby, a slo-pitch/softball diamond, and a mountain bike park. ~ Gary Ahuja

Virginia’s World Was Shrinking

McLeod Park: Field of dreams of burgeoning stars The past few years have seen Canada make an even greater mark on Major League Baseball. In the past five years alone, two separate Canadians have won most valuable player awards, with the Minnesota Twins’ Justin Morneau taking the American League honours in 2006 and then last year, Joey Votto of the Cincinnati Reds winning the National League award. Needless to say, more and more MLB teams are looking north of the border to tap into the burgeoning Canadian talent base. And McLeod Park, home of the Langley Blaze, is fast producing some of the top-notch talent catching the eyes of baseball scouts. In two of the past three drafts, Langley has produced a first round selection. In 2008, Brett Lawrie became the highest Canadian positional player ever selected, when the Milwaukee Brewers chose him 16th overall. And last year, another local product, Kellin Deglan, was not far behind, as the Texas Rangers chose him 22nd overall. Altogether, under the tutelage of Doug Mathieson, the architect of the Langley Blaze program, 26 players have been drafted by MLB clubs in the past 10 years. ~ Gary Ahuja

Langley’s Gateway of Hope Langley’s Gateway of Hope, which offers shelter, food and training to people in need, has just completed its first full fiscal year. The shelter, which opened in late 2009, was built as the result of an amazing outpouring of support from the community, including service clubs, churches and the two local governments. The provincial government was also a major contributor. In the year April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011, the Gateway of Hope saw 9,998 emergency shelter beds used out of a possible 10,950, meaning it was full almost every night. This is a 91.3 per cent occupancy rate. "We served 17,735 free community meals, and the extreme weather shelter had 193 guests," says executive director, Major James Hagglund of the Salvation Army. The Opportunities program, which helps people gain skills and prepare to live productive lives on their own, is growing steadily and in February was at 100 per cent capacity The Cook Training Program now has a group of students learning cook skills in a 20-week, 40 hours per week, program. This program has continuous intake. During the Christmas season, 410 individuals were assisted through a Christmas gift cards to allow them to purchase food to make their Christmas a bit more joyful. Throughout the year food, clothing, and some furniture was distributed those in need. Last summer, 15 young people were sent to The Salvation Army’s Camp Sunrise for a one week vacation. The Langley Gateway of Hope follows the principles set out in the Salvation Army’s faith-based principles. Care is holistic, involving care for the body, mind, spirit

and relationships. Community — healing is possible through relationships. Change is possible. It comes from within. Capacity for change is part of the image of God. Hope is a catalyst, giving energy for change and faith. "As we move into this fiscal year, there is a commitment to continue to meet the needs of the community in ways already in place, and to seek out new ways to become more effective. A number of partnerships have been formed with other service providers to ensure that we work in cooperation and not competition," says Hagglund. "We also appreciate the many volunteers that help us with a variety of projects. Without volunteers we could not accomplish near what we do." If anyone wants to investigate volunteering at the Gateway of Hope, they should contact Kelsey @ 604514-7375 ext. 230. The Gateway of Hope also relies heavily on donations from the ccmmunity. Government shelter funding does not cover the full costs each year. Anyone who wishes to donate can come in to see the staff, or send a donation to The Salvation Army Gateway of Hope, 5787 Langley Bypass, Langley, B.C. V3A 0A9. It should be marked "For the Gateway of Hope." "I believe Langley is a wonderful community. As we work together, there will be a brighter future for all of its citizens," says Hagglund.

World’s Best Set to rock in Langley The world’s best curlers will battle it out in Langley this January. The World Financial Group Continental Cup brings the top dozen teams from across the globe to the Langley Events Centre Jan. 12-15, 2012. The Continental Cup, which is organized by the World Curling Federation, features six teams from North America against six international squads representing the world. The format is modeled after golf’s Ryder Cup, with points available for wins and draws. The curlers battle in various disciplines: regular team games, mixed doubles, singles, mixed skins and skins. In addition to having the world’s top curlers in town,

the national spotlight will also be on Langley. Sporting broadcast giant TSN will provide complete coverage of the four-day event. They are hoping to build on the massive popularity surge the sport experienced at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver. The women’s gold-medal match drew a national audience of six million viewers, while the men’s final had seven million. The 2012 tournament event will be the eighth edition of the Continental Cup, with Team North America lead~ Gary Ahuja ing their counterparts 4-3.

Crown jewel of senior boys’ basketball finds new home For the first time in its illustrious 66-year history, the B.C. AAA championships left the Greater Vancouver area and came to the Fraser Valley. The Langley Events Centre hosted the top 20 teams at the annual championships, which had long been played in Burnaby, Vancouver and New Westminster.

Variety Junction Preschool Trained educators teach through play. Children of all abilities are welcome. Toilet training is not a requirement. Classes offered 2/3/5 days per week. Includes the Seeds of Empathy curriculum.

But the lure of a new facility — and one which had multiple courts, which guaranteed each team four games and all under the same roof — was too much to pass up for tournament organizers. A crowd of more than 4,000 fans were on hand for the championship final, which pit Richmond’s R.C. Palmer against Vancouver College,

with Palmer winning their first title. Altogether, it is estimated that more than 10,000 fans were in the stands over the course of the fiveday tournament. A five-year agreement will keep the championships at the Langley Events Centre through 2015. The tournament is held in March. ~ Gary Ahuja

Campbell Valley Park

FOR

EVERY STEP YOU TAKE! FORT LANGLEY

HALF & 5 KM JULY 24, 2011 We have designed this race course to be the most scenic half marathon in the country!

“We Fit Feet” www.peninsularunners.com LANGLEY: 604-888-1338, 1-20349 88 Ave. WHITE ROCK: 604-531-7879, 1708 152nd St ABBOTSFORD: 604-746-1338 2540 Montrose Ave.

Situated in the southwest corner of Langley, Campbell Valley Park is one of the largest and most inviting of Metro Vancouver’s parks, rich in the gifts of nature, a gem which remains undiscovered for many Langley residents. The park has endearing names: Shaggy Main Trail for instance, a 14 km path used by walkers and horse riders. Pedestrians are expected to yield to equestrian traffic. The Listening Bridge is located at the point where the South Valley Trail and Deer Trail converge. It is a place to pause, to listen to the rustle of the leaves as an undulating breeze passes, to absorb the colours of nature’s amazing palette, and to breathe the air refreshed by a light summer shower, or the heady perfume bursting from wild honeysuckle. The Listening Bridge straddles the marshland of Little Campbell River which flows into the park at 216 Street and meanders lazily until it leaves the park at McLean Scout Camp on its way to Mud Bay. The Annand/Rowlatt Farmstead is one of the few buildings in the park. It was built in 1886 by Alexander Annand who cleared the land for cattle and hay, and also planted foxgloves to attract bees. Len Rowlatt owned the farm from 1918 until 1973 when the Greater Vancouver Regional District, (now Metro Vancouver) acquired the park. The Ravine Trail hugs the farmstead on which the original outbuildings and chicken coops have been maintained. Just north of the farm is the Order of Canada Grove which is close to the main 8 Avenue entrance. The Lochiel School House, built in 1924, lies between the farmstead and 204 Street. The Old Orchard group picnic area, where friends

meet for barbecues and families gather for weddings, is a few steps away from the visitor centre and demonstration wildlife centre. North of the Listening Bridge is the Little River Loop, a 2.3 km flat path that is accessible for people in wheelchairs. The loop is easier when walked or wheeled in a counterclockwise direction. The park is not only for walking. It has numerous picnic tables, and the Cottonwood Meadow, reached from the Shaggy Main Trail, is a delightful spot for a blanket on the ground. For more active but still peaceful pursuits, the McLean Pond, accessed from 20 Avenue east of 200 Street, lies between McLean Scout Camp (accessed from 16 Avenue) and the tree nursery. The pond is ideal for paddling a canoe, and rising to the west is a knoll which invites children of all ages to run, fly kites or stroll. ’ Campbell Valley Park’s two main vehicle entrances are on 16 Avenue between 200 and 208 Streets, and 8 Avenue and 204 Street. Walkers and riders can enter along 4 Avenue, 216 Street, and on 208 Street where the entrance opens up to the Spirit of the Horse Memorial Garden ’ The park is open during daylight hours. ’ Camp Coyote in McLean Park can be reserved for up to 40 campers. ’ Except for two off-leash areas, dogs must be kept on a leash. ’ To reserve facilities, call 604432-6352. For more information on the park, including a host of programs held throughout the year, call 604 530-4983, or go to www.gvrd.bc.ca. ~Natasha Jones

With a thriving equine industry valued at over $50 million annually and a population of thousands of horses, Langley is a great place to enjoy equestrian activities from the ground or from the saddle. The development of worldclass equestrian facilities like Thunderbird Show Park have attracted international competitors to our rural community, known as the Horse Capital of BC. Campbell Valley Regional Park, a 535-hectare nature preserve located in the southwest corner of Langley Township, is one of the premier destinations for recreational trail riders and walkers in the Lower Mainland. Western riding enthusiasts participate in a number of events like reining, team penning and barrel racing at riding centres throughout the community. Other riding disciplines like dressage are also popular here. Langley is home to many elite equestrian athletes like Leslie Reid, currently Canada’s highest-ranked international dressage rider. The Langley Horse Federation (LHF) is a non-profit society that was incorporated in 1995 to strengthen and promote the horse industry in Langley, currently valued at well over $60 million annually. The LHF is working with other agricultural organizations to enhance Langley’s agricultural heritage and to make Langley the most ’horse friendly community in North America’. Specifically, the mandate of the LHF is to implement the initiatives set out in the Langley Horse Industry Strategy, a document adopted by local government as part of a strategy to strengthen the agricultural economy in the Township of Langley. The LHF promotes the horse industry through a broad-based series of initiatives carried out by committees made up of volunteers from all sectors of the community. The Education Committee is working to promote awareness of horses and equestrian sports in the schools, and to encourage environmental awareness among members of the equestrian community. The Promotion and Marketing Committee of the LHF is working to promote horses, and equestrian sports and facilities as part of the agro-tourism market in the Langley. This group also plans special events to showcase Langley’s equestrian community. The Facilities Committee is investigating the possibility of the development of a major agricultural facility in Langley. The Trails Committee is working with recreational riders and other user groups to promote the expansion of the trail network in Langley. The Langley School District Foundation With a mission to make learning UNFORGETTABLE for every Langley student and a mandate to provide and support innovative, educational programs that do not receive funding from the Ministry of Education, the Foundation knows that its community partners are invaluable and essential for the success of Langley students. Since 2005, with the help from our donors, supporters and sponsors the Foundation has been able to provide all the 41 schools in the district with state-of-the-art technology especially designed to engage and prepare students for the 21 century. The technology includes Smart Boards which are like interactive chalk boards, allowing teachers and students immediate access to a world of information directly related to the subject being taught. As well, the Foundation has provided teaching tablets, document cameras and projectors – the latest in educational technology. And that’s not all! The Foundation has provided the schools with 1000’s of books. Books that especially appeal to boys, books that celebrate and honour Aboriginal traditions, culture and history, books that are written in English and other languages for ESL students and sets of graphic novels that appeal to struggling readers of all ages. The Foundation also has a major focus on keeping kids in school – all kids, especially those who are most vulnerable. In so doing, the Foundation supports the Dual Credit Programs that allow students to receive their Level I apprenticeship in any of four trades (auto mechanics, plumbing/pipe fitting, hairdressing or carpentry) and still graduate from school. The

Foundation supports Restorative Action and Project Resiliency programs that encourage effective conflict resolution and provide an alternative to suspension and has provided a literacy and leadership program for at-risk and vulnerable students. We raised $76,000 to establish a loan bank of assistive equipment fo students with special needs and another $35,000 to set up a musical instrument loan bank, allowing any student to take band in school, even if they could not afford to rent or buy their own instrument. Our community partners help out in many ways and we couldn’t do what we do without them. First, they provide sponsorships to support our two major events – the Heart to Heart Gala and the Golf tournament This year the Gala is on Sunday, May 29 at Thunde Show Park during an international Grand Prix horse jumping competition. All proceeds are going to support technology to assist all students, especially those with special needs. The golf tournament is on Wednesday, August 31 at Redwoods and proceeds will go to support sports programs in the schools. Our partners also support our magazine. Entitled Student Success, the magazine celebrates student achievement and is distributed to 11,000 families and community venues in Langley. All proceeds from advertising revenue support Langley students. The Langley School District Foundation would like to take this opportunity to thank all our community partners and to invite others to join us in making learning UNFORGETTABLE for every Langley student.
