In the 2011-2012 school year, the number of students in the Langley School District be two per cent smaller than the year before. There will be 363 fewer full-time equivalents in the system, which will mean about $1.7 million less from the provincial government.

That is bad news for a school district that is already facing a funding crunch. The district will save about $1 million because it will need fewer teachers and support staff for a smaller student population, but that still leaves a loss of around $700,000 that will have to come out of the budget. That’s on top of the $13.5 million the district is required to pay back to the provincial government for running an operating deficit, and it is one of the reasons why budget cuts will be even deeper than first expected, rising from $3.4 to $4.4 million a year over the four years of required repayments. It’s the first time Langley student numbers have fallen in five years, but it will not be the last. Superintendent Cheryle Beaumont says every group of graduates from now on will

be smaller than before. “The last of the big grade 12 classes is gone,” she told trustees at a Tuesday night board meeting. Conventional wisdom has been that an increased number of students generated by new housing in the Willoughby slope area would compensate for the decline everywhere else in Langley, but secretary-treasurer David Green has his doubts. “I think the growth on the slope may not be as great as we thought,” Green warned Tuesday. Next week, trustees will decide exactly where budget cuts must be made. Options include cuts to elementary remedial reading programs and saving money by refusing to replace clerical staff on their first day off work.

The trial of the two men charged with killing 24-year-old Aldergrove resident Kyle Barber heard how one of them has changed his version of events considerably since he spoke to police. Gregory Michael Barrett, 32, originally said it was Barber’s girlfriend who ran to a bedroom to get a gun when he and co-accused Albert Jacob Jackman, 24, paid the couple a visit at their Fraser Highway home on March 28, 2009. Now, he says it was Barber who suddenly left the living room to arm himself. Barrett is charged with manslaughter and Jackman is charged with first degree murder in Barber’s stabbing death. On Wednesday, Crown prosecutor Christopher McPherson presented a video of Barrett’s police interrogation. The ceiling-mounted camera recorded Barrett sitting in a chair against the far corner of the small interrogation room. Suzuki service bay up in flames

Fire heavily damaged the service bay at Orca Bay Suzuki on Tuesday. Several passersby called 911 when they saw smoke and flames coming out of the dealership at 8 p.m. No one was in the premises and there were no vehicles in the bay.

A fire caused damage to the Orca Bay Suzuki dealership at 20115 Fraser Highway in Langley City on Tuesday evening. Twenty-six Langley City firefighters were called to the fire around 8 p.m. after passersby noticed smoke coming from the building. Damage to the service bay area was extensive, but could have been much worse, according to the fire department. The cause of the fire is now under investigation. Langley City’s fire chief Rory Thompson said that firefighters were able to tackle the blaze quickly and, because of the solid construction, the fire was prevented from spreading to offices, and the showroom which is on the east side of the building. The fire was contained to the service bay. There were no cars in the bay. The building was for many years home to the William Clark Ford dealership, and was taken over by Orca Bay about a year ago. The company held its grand opening last July.

Shorter school year approved for Langley Teachers’ union files grievance, citing contract violation DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter

Langley schools will be closed for six more days and the missing time will be made up by adding a few minutes to remaining school days to compensate for lost instruction time. The money-saving measure was approved by trustees on Tuesday night.

They opted for a middle-of-the-road solution where more employees will be paid for working those days, a move that reduces the potential savings from $639,000 to $225,000 a year, but averts a confrontation with the union that represents part-time support staff. Trustee Steve Burton, who chaired the meeting, voted against the change, saying a few extra minutes of classroom time will not replace the missing six days. “I do not like this,” Burton said. Neither did the other trustees, but they said the district’s options are limited because it must make deep budget cuts to repay a multimillion dollar budget overrun in the 2008-2009 and 2009-2010 school

years. Trustee Rob McFarlane described the alteration to the school calendar as “a less painful way than some of the alternatives.” Trustee Wendy Johnson called it “the least of the evils we’re looking at” Trustee Alison McVeigh viewed it as a temporary measure that will be rescinded as

soon as possible. “It is my hope it will be [gone] in two

years. My expectation is it will be three.” Trustee Rod Ross agreed. “I do not see us going beyond this.” The Langley Teachers Association has filed a grievance over the change, saying it violates their union contract. LTA president Susan Fonseca called the change “depressing.” “We have a mounting deficit of hope in Langley,” Fonseca told trustees Tuesday. The change to the 2011-2012 school calendar will double spring break from one to two weeks and add one day to the Remembrance Day long weekend. Nine minutes will be added to each elementary school days and 10 minutes tacked on to secondary school days.

Two hundred people gave the five candidates for Langley MP a look and a listen, at Tuesday’s Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce meeting. The chamber hosted the five candidates, giving them a brief opportunity to talk about themselves and then answer a series of questions posed by president Milt Kruger. All the candidates had opportunities to meet with potential voters before and after the dinner meeting. While most of the questions posed related to business issues, there were a number of chances for candidates to differentiate themselves from each other, and elaborate on party policy. One came in answers to a question on how best to control costs and improve productivity in the health system. Liberal Rebecca Darnell said her party does not want a two-tiered system, with some people getting faster treatment by paying for

Truth about the Bloc

Dix is a gift to BC Liberals

ne of the best things that has happened in the 2011 federal election campaign has been the willingness of other political parties to speak honestly and openly about the Bloc Quebecois, and why it is not entitled to even a scrap of power in the federal government. While Conservative leader Stephen Harper has been the most forceful about the Bloc’s aim being to break up the country, both Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff and NDP leader Jack Layton have also been more honest about the Bloc. Both have said they would not be part of any coalition with the Bloc, which is very different from what happened after the 2008 federal election, when the Liberals and NDP signed a formal coalition agreement, and the Bloc agreed in writing to support it for a fixed period. If voters in Quebec choose to vote for the Bloc and, in some ridings, elect Bloc MPs, that is their right. We live in a democracy and candidates from all sorts of perspectives run in every riding across the country. However, MPs who are committed to taking Quebec out of the country and, as recently as last weekend, pledged to do everything within their power to assist the provincial Parti Quebecois in doing so, should not have their hands even close to the levers of power. By definition, they want Canada to fail. They want to show Quebeckers that a federal system does not work. The Bloc should be a spent force. It formed after the failure of the Meech Lake Accord and, at the time, had some legitimacy. Meech’s failure and the rejection of the Charlottetown Accord angered many Quebeckers. But that was more than 20 years ago. The only reason the Bloc still thrives is because of federal subsidies to political parties. It raises minimal funding on its own, and wins many of its seats by virtue of splitting the vote. Polls show that only about one-third of Quebeckers support separation. The best way to have those numbers fall further is by working on positive initiatives which help all parts of the country, and by other parties pledging to have no truck nor trade with the Bloc.

he NDP in B.C. just took a big step left with the election of Adrian Dix as party leader, and we’re sure the B.C. Liberals couldn’t be happier with the outcome. Dix is a return to more familiar territory for the New Democrats, whose traditional base of support lies with unions. Dix has also been around since the days of Glen Clark, so his roots with the party run deep. But these two things ultimately could be the NDP’s undoing in the next provincial election. There are many in B.C. who fear that a Dix-led government would mean higher taxes, higher government spending and a higher level of regulation for business. Many also deeply fear a return to the Glen Clark years of government and it will be difficult for Dix to shed the fact he was Clark’s chief of staff, who was later forced to resign as part of the Casinogate scandal. If the NDP were serious about winning the next election, Mike Farnworth was the logical choice. He presented policies with a broader appeal to the more moderate voters of the province, many of whom are itching for a change from the HST-tarnished Liberals. Farnworth was the candidate to really give Christy Clark a run for her money in the next election. But with Dix at the helm of the NDP, a Liberal win is pretty much money in the bank. —Salmon Arm Observer (Black Press)

Langley ‘held us up and didn’t let go’ Editor: We would like to thank the people of Langley for their outpouring of support for our family, during the most stressful time of our lives. Please forgive our tardiness in doing so. On Nov. 6, 2010 at 4:45 a.m. in Nashville, we received a phone call telling us that our son, Ron, had been hit by a train in Seattle and only had hours to live. We left immediately to be with him, and after spending 60 days in Harborview Hospital, we fully expected him to survive and return home at some point. We were completely devastated when he passed away on Jan. 4. Throughout the entire ordeal, there was one constant that gave our family the strength, the hope and the faith, to just keep hanging on, to not give up, to continue trusting God for a miracle. That constant was the friends, the families, even strangers whom we had never met. They supported us with prayers and good wishes, phone calls, hospital visits, hugs, letters, financial gifts, food, drinks, treats. They just kept coming. Firefighters filled the ICU hallway on a regular basis. They were there to support us and to let Ron know how much they cared about him. They sold “Team Dunkley T-shirts” to raise money to help the family with expenses. Langley’s business community held fundraisers and blood drives, all being done in honour of Ron. Your newspaper kept people informed as to what was happening on a weekly basis. It was all so overwhelming to have people like Mayor Peter Fassbender visit Ron twice

in Seattle, and pray with him. Kenny Richardson from Pastime Sports donated hundreds of memorial plaques, which he personally had made for the funeral. The staff at the Rendezvous Pub donated their meat draw monies to the Dunkley Family Fund. Gabby’s Country Cabaret staff held countless 50/50 draws, with proceeds going to the Dunkley Family Fund. There were tree-chipping fundraisers put on by the local firefighters. Many businesses helped to gather donations for the family fund, including Starbucks, Tim Hortons and several local retailers. The day Ron’s body was returned to Canada, a parade was held in his honour to “Bring Ron Home.” The fire department arranged to meet him at the U.S. border, which actually shut down for one and one-half hours, and had flags flying at half-mast. People lined the highway, hundreds of them, to watch the procession carrying Ron to Henderson’s Funeral Home. The parade consisted of fire trucks, rescue vehicles, ambulances — first responders from all over the Lower Mainland. Tony Crawford took pictures of everything that was happening, in order to give our family as many wonderful memories as possible. They are memories of just how much our Ron was loved. Ron’s “Incredible Journey” memorial service was held at Christian Life Assembly, our family church home. The City of Langley, RCMP,

City fire department, Township fire department, and many other local fire departments donated their time to take part in the service. Senior pastor Brent Cantelon led the service. Mayor Fassbender and retired Langley City fire chief Jim McGregor, shared memories and stories about Ron, which made us laugh and cry. There were 1,600 people at Ron’s memorial service, and outside there were over 600 firefighters and other first responders lining the church driveway and street as the funeral procession made it’s way to Langley Lawn Cemetery. The RCMP guarded the intersections as it passed by. Our amazing son, Ronald Dale Dunkley, now lives forever with Jesus. We can accept that, but we do miss him so very much. Sign vandalism worst ever, says campaign manager Editor: I would like to thank the many concerned citizens who have contacted the Mark Warawa Conservative campaign office regarding the alarming number of incidents of theft and vandalism of Conservative Party election signs. In the past seven federal elections, I have never seen so many blatant anti-democratic acts, including the theft of signs from private property and malicious vandalism. Reality check needed on TV election reporting Editor: The media (CTV in particular) is so flagrantly biased towards the Liberals that a reality check needs to be done to counter the slurs, innuendos, and half-truths. TV news plays and replays the mud-slinging by the opposition parties, but does not equally play the answers of Stephen Harper to each of the accusations. For example, they continually play clips where Harper is slurred for the contempt charge (voted by the opposition), and there is incomplete information about the ruling of the Speaker of the House. You never hear “prima facie” mentioned nor the whole story about the non-confidence vote coming after the opposition The

threatened an election if they did not get all they wanted in the budget. They continued to make the threat, after negotiation time was long past. The slurs regarding a senator’s fraud charges are continually played, but we do not see anything about the privy council’s part in clearing him. Harper is continually blamed for things he knew nothing about. The slurs continue to be thrown regarding two girls being asked to leave the Conservative rally, but we do not see repeated references to the RCMP’s apology for their part in that situation. Editor: The egg is one of the most recognized Easter symbols. Unfortunately, it takes a certain amount of hunting to find a humanely produced egg. People who don’t want their eggs to come from hens in cages (as 98 per cent of eggs do in Canada) should shop carefully. Only certified organic eggs guarantee the hens a better life — uncaged, with access to the outdoors and a nest in which to lay their eggs. Organic farms are also inspected regularly, so you can be sure that you’re getting what you’ve paid for. Regular eggs, with their dizzying array of labels like “farm fresh,”“vegetarian feed” and “Omega-3” are the product of extreme and unnecessary suffering. Hens are kept in wire cages in tiers piled on top of each other, stuffed into a cage with five to seven other hens for their entire lives. They have no access to the outdoors and no opportunity to perform hard-wired behaviours such as wing-flapping, nesting and foraging. Until they are transported to slaughter, they never feel the sun on their backs or the wind in their feathers. Their beaks are cut off to stop them pecking each other from frustration. Even labels such as “freerange” and “free-run” can be misleading, since there are no regulations in place to ensure the standards. Science is clear that hens suffer in cages. Yet battery cages are still the production method of choice in Canada. Only you can change that — when you pay a few cents more for a certified organic egg. Relay For Life set for May 27 Langley Relay For Life’s volunteer organizing committee is counting down the weeks to the 7th Annual Langley Relay For Life Event at McLeod Park on Friday, May 27. “Langley joins over 53 B.C. communities in bringing Relay to life each year, and we are a community committed to the fight back against cancer,” said Diana Beglaw, volunteer survivor chair and captain of Team Funtastic. “I don’t think there’s any one of us who doesn’t know someone who has been touched by cancer. On May 27, we invite everyone to come out and support our friends, our families, our community,” she said. “Every step taken and every dollar raised makes it possible for the Canadian Cancer Society to invest in lifesaving cancer research, lead crucial cancer prevention initiatives and deliver caring practical and personal support to people living with cancer,” said Shannon Todd Booth, Langley Relay For Life’s co-ordinator. “Together, we continue to make a difference in the lives of Canadians fighting cancer.” Participants may sign up as individuals, team captains, or as team members. LFES students shine in coin ASHLEIGH BEAUDOIN Times Reporter

Langley Fundamental Elementary School (LFES) students took a fundraising opportunity and made it shine for the Gandidzanwa Primary School in eastern Zimbabwe. The school took a step outside Canada’s charitable bounds to partner with the Hear Africa Foundation, and raise funds for an underprivileged school in Zimbabwe by hosting a coin drive. It exceeded all expectations. The drive had a goal of $10,000, to build two new classrooms and a library. These additions would be the school’s first proper classrooms, because the Gandidzanwa school has very minimal resources and the students have no furniture to sit on. In the first two days, LFES had raised half of their goal.

“Each class was given an empty milk jug,” said Ginny Sawatsky, school parent, and one of Hear Africa’s founders. “The kids just took it from there.” The Hear Africa Foundation originated in Sawatsky’s backyard, with clothing and small donations, and it exploded into the charity, to give aid in Zimbabwe and promote learning in schools like Gandidzanwa Primary. The organization is volunteer-run, but is thriving as a result of efforts like those of LFES students. LFES began its relationship with the Zimbabwe school two years ago, when students in two classrooms wrote letters to students in Zimbabwe. The students were inspired by the cause of helping others and the $10,000 goal was reached within the first four days, with funds reaching $15,000 by the end of the week.

The drive was slated to end on April 15 (last Friday), but students asked to have an extra weekend so that they could do more fundraising. The students of LFES exercised their charitable muscles and raised $17,903. “It started off as a coin drive,” said Sawatsky, whose daughters attend LFES. “When we first talked about $10,000 we were very nervous that it was way too much. We thought it would take way into the next school year.” Students were creative with their fundraising tactics, going further than just collecting coins. They sold items, held bottle drives and one family built 25 bird houses and then sold them. On the first day of the coin drive, the students were shown video footage from the Gandidzanwa school, where the students could be seen sitting on the floor or in classes outside on the ground.

zanwa a partner school with LFES and will maintain a connection with the students in both countries and help the schooling community in Zimbabwe grow. “This is going to be our main fundraiser that we do,” said Alan Wiebe, principal of Langley Fundamental Elementary.“It’s a really neat connection we’ve got going there.” He said a partnership with the Gandidzanwa School will create a long-term, tangible relationship to a project that his students can see. With the extra money that was raised, the foundation will consult with their director in Zimbabwe, who is connected to the school, and decide what the next step will be in making the school a better space for students to learn in. Residents who opposed a cell phone tower in their rural east Murrayville neighbourhood had the backing of Township council, which refused to endorse Bell Mobility’s plan to erect a 164-foot monopole in both 2007 and 2008. Thus it came as a shock when earth-moving equipment was brought in last month to clear land at 23537 40 Ave., less than 100 feet from Lisa Grover’s home. In a letter to council, Grover pleaded for help.

Valley homes sales hit ﬁve-year high for March. Fraser Valley Real Estate Board records its best March since 2006. Home sales had a huge month in March, with sales hitting five-year highs. The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board (FVREB) recorded 1,818 property sales last month, marking its best March since 2006. Sales jumped by 16 per cent over March 2010, which saw 1,565 sales in total. March also saw a jump of 42 per cent in sales over February, when the FVREB processed 1,279 sales. Back in March of 2006, 2,072 sales were recorded. Board President Sukh Sidhu says the overall demand was strong, but it wasn’t spread across the Valley as a whole. “For example, sales of single family detached homes in White Rock/South Surrey

increased by over 150 per cent in March compared to last year, however in Abbotsford they were down by almost seven per cent,” he said. Sidhu added that the number of new properties being listed for sale jumped by 11 per cent, rising from 3,038 new listings in February to 3,376 in March this year. Real estate prices also rose in March, but that jump was not quite as dramatic. The benchmark price for detached homes in the Fraser Valley hit $519,628 last month, an increase of 0.9 per cent over the March 2010 price of $514,787. Townhome prices remained relatively flat, rising from $326,307 in 2010 to $327,328 in March of 2011.

Castle Hill is just five minutes from Fort Langley, but owners will never know it once they step onto their property. Other builders involved with the project include Wallmark Homes, Wescraft Residential Builders and Clay Construction Inc. “Every lot is a unique setting,” Foster says. “I was showing the home (recently) and there were deer walking through the yard.” Potential homebuyers have told him they love the location of the subdivision and the lots, Foster says. The open-plan layout of the homes has also been popular.

Homes at Castle Hill are close to historic Fort Langley, three local golf courses and the Fraser River, as well as numerous shops, restaurants and other services. Housing sales up 16 per cent Valley realtors have busiest March since 2006 The Fraser Valley Real Estate Board processed 1,818 property sales in March, an increase of 16 per cent compared to 1,565 sold during March of last year, and an increase of 42 per cent compared to February’s 1,279 sales. In March of 2006, there were 2,072 sales. In terms of sales on the Multiple Listings Service (MLS), the numbers mean that Valley realtors had their busiest March since 2006. Board president Sukh Sidhu said that “We are seeing strong demand in Fraser Valley but not

necessarily for every product type in every community.” He noted that sales of single family detached homes in White Rock/South Surrey increased by more than 150 per cent in March compared to last year. However, in Abbotsford sales were down by almost seven per cent. The property type that saw the largest increase in sales in Abbotsford during the month of March was condominiums. Sidhu added that in addition to sales volumes, the number of new properties being listed for sale increased by 11 per cent, going from 3,038 new listings in February to 3,376 in March. This gave buyers more choice during one of the most popular times of the year to house hunt.

March finished with six per cent more active listings on the MLS than in February — 9,228 compared to 8,680 — but still six per cent fewer compared to the 9,828 listings that were active during March, 2010. Regarding prices, the benchmark price for Fraser Valley detached homes in March was $519,628, an increase of 0.9 per cent from the price of $514,787 one year ago. The benchmark price of Fraser Valley townhouses in March remained on par yearover-year going from $326,307 in 2010 to $327,328 in 2011. The benchmark price of apartments was $249,463 in March, a 1.1 per cent increase over the $246,673 cost in March, 2010.

Pitney Bowes, Redwoods team up for Earth Day In an effort to enhance a local Langley green space, Redwoods Golf Course and Pitney Bowes have teamed up to combat global warming in celebration of Earth Day (April 22). As one of Langleyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s designated green spaces, Redwoods golf course is preserved by the Township of Langley, but this year, the two businesses are using Earth day to make a difference in the communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recreational areas. Pitney Bowes, which specializes in facilitating business communication needs, and Redwoods teamed up yesterday (Thursday) to work on improving the grounds area by the golf course by adding to its greenery and maintaining what is already there. The Redwoods staff will plant

new trees, clean and repair the grounds with the help of the Pitney Bowes staff. As a home to more than 70 unique species of birds, Redwoods trees play a part in the bird population of the community. The staff will be working on cleaning and repairing the bird houses that house some of these species. Once the trees and bushes around Redwoods shed their leaves and fall to the roadside on 88 Avenue, they cover the garbage that litters the side of the road, leaving it covered for the winter months. Now that winter is finally over, the leaves will be cleared by the hard-working staff of Redwoods and Pitney Bowes.

Canada calls for Spartans coach

There will be no resting on his laurels this summer for Ben Josephson. After coaching the Trinity Western Spartans to a Canadian Interuniversity Sport national championship in volleyball, Josephson could have kicked back, relaxed and gotten ready to defend the title next season. Instead, the 31-year-old will join Team Canada as an assistant coach at the World University Games (FISU Games). “I am really excited to have the opportunity to work with our national B team this summer,” Josephson said. “The message coming off of our

Bos admits with a smile he would have no problem standing his ground and delivering a hard foul if necessary on his lifelong friend, if that is what the game called for. “We would probably be the worst of friends (during the game),” added Ehman. That is what happens when high school comes to an end and players used to being teammates for the past five years, head their separate ways. But for the two Langley chums, their friendship stretches back even further, as they first met as kindergarten students at St. Catherine’s Catholic Elementary School. And ever since they were in the fourth grade, the pair have also been teammates on the basketball court. But starting next year, the on-court partnership comes to an end as the 18-year-olds head their separate ways in pursuit of a university education and some post-secondary basketball at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level. Ehman is off to Ontario, where he has commwtted to attend the University of Waterloo. Bos is also heading east, albeit it much closer to home, going to Kamloops to play for the Thompson Rivers WolfPack. “Oh yeah,” said Holy Cross coach Matt Lechasseur, when asked if Ehman and Bos are competitive. “Every little thing is a competition, whether it is drills, or who hits more shots, or who had more assists. “They find a way to compete in everything.” Lechasseur has coached them for the past three years and said the pair’s graduation will leave a big void for the team. “They are really hard working and pretty dedicated to what they are doing,” he said. “They are great leaders for us.” Ehman was drawn to Waterloo for its academic reputation, and for the

championship season was that we will have to work twice as hard if we would like to do it again. By spending the summer with the national team and having the chance to work with some of our nation’s best players and coaches I hope to learn and grow as a coach to better help our group make another run at a national championship.” Josephson will assist Larry McKay, the head coach of the Winnipeg Wesmen. This is Josephson’s second stint with Canada’s national program as he was on the coaching staff in 2005 when they finished 10th at the FISU

chance to play. Bos had considered attending an Ontario school, which would have made the pair conference rivals, but ultimately chose to stay closer to home. Both are excited to play at the next level. “It will be a different experience,” Ehman admitted. “(But) it will be nice to learn a different kind of game.” Bos, a six-foot-six small forward, knows it will be a whole lot tougher competing in the Canada West conference. He watched both his future conference rivals Trinity Western and UBC play this last season — they won silver and bronze, respectively at the CIS national championships — and knows just how tough things will be. “It will be a challenge; it is just scary to see how good some of those guys are,” he said. “But it is exciting.” The pair are walking into different situations. Ehman is expected to get the chance to contribute right away at Waterloo. The Warriors play a high-tempo game and expect scoring from their guards. “He will fit right into that because he is very athletic,” said Waterloo coach Tom Kieswetter, whose starting point guard has graduated, meaning Ehman will have a chance for some minutes as a freshman alongside another returnee at the position. “We expect him to run the team, quarterback the attack and get some points out of him,” he said. Kieswetter has not met Ehman, and is relying on video he has seen. “He is very creative and very good in getting by people.” Thompson Rivers coach Scott Clark tracked Bos all season after first seeing him at a Centre for Performance Basketball BC camp. “I was impressed with how hard he worked,” Clark said, stressing that work ethic is essential to success. “No player comes in as a freshman ready to contribute. “What you are looking for is a kid who has those physical characteristics and has the ability to work and develop into the type of player you have a vision for.”

Games in Turkey. “Any time you have the opportunity to represent your country at any event, it is an honour,” he said. “I have had this opportunity in the past and cherish it deeply and am honoured to be getting another chance to wear our country’s colours at a sporting competition. A former Spartans player, Josephson has been head coach for four years, and guided the team to a CIS gold and silver the past two seasons, respectively. The World University Games are August 12-23 in Shenzen, China.

United tames Fury Three goals in opening nine minutes lead to Langley rout GARY AHUJA Times Sports

Langley United scored an early knockout punch, striking in the first minute and then building a 3-0 lead by the nine-minute mark of their semifinal game. After that, the U13 boys’ soccer team cruised to a 6-0 shellacking of the North Vancouver Fury on Saturday at Willoughby Park. The teams were playing in the B.C. Coastal Cup semifinals, and the win advances Langley to the championship game on April 30 against the Ladner Celtics. The game will be played in Richmond with the winner moving on to the provincial championships in July. After Langley scored two goals fairly quickly, the Fury had no answer. “We started strong and they were taken aback, a bit shellshocked,” said coach Scott Howey. “We were in full control by that point.” Ethan KanoMcGregor scored the first three goals and then Mattias Jahn made it 4-0, Kano-McGregor and Wyatt Gilbert added second-half scores. “It doesn’t surprise me, by the results we have had this year,” Howey said about his team’s convincing victory. “I was a little bit more surprised since it was a Cup semifinal (game).” He also credited midfielder Dean Ellenwood for some

outstanding passing, and the defence duo of John Kasper and Eric Chmelyk, for eliminating any attacks the Fury tried to mount. Playing for the Coastal Cup title does not surprise the coach. “We have a very strong squad,” he said. “They have worked hard to get to this

point; they definitely deserve to be where they are.” In the finals, they will face a Celtics teams which is very stingy. The teams met earlier this season in Conference Cup play, with Langley winning 2-1 in extra time. “They frustrated us, it definitely won’t be as easy as a game as the semifinal,” Howey said. “The kids are excited and they are looking forward to it.”
