Keep school land, parents urge board
DOUBLE TIME
School-for-townhouses swap should be cancelled, trustees told DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter
Garrett JAMES/Langley Times
Shaelah Matechuk and Nicole Delage, students at Lavrova Ballet Academy, perform at Willowbrook Shopping Centre on Saturday, May 14. The event was part of an effort by the studio to get more involved in the community and give its students a chance to perform in front of an audience.
If the deal to convert a Langley property into a townhouse project goes ahead, it will end any hope of a school for the Routley neighborhood, a spokesman for area parents told Langley trustees Tuesday night. Pete Pretorius led a delegation of more than 80 parents who oppose a plan that would transfer the unused school site to a developer in return for another location in Yorkson, away from Routley. “We need you to cancel this,” said Pretorius, arguing the board should keep the land even if it has no immediate plans to build a school there. “You build townhouses, the door is shut.” A survey by parents suggests there are about 500 students of school age in the Routley area. The district estimate is smaller at 295, but that is only students enrolled in Langley classes. It doesn’t include children who live in Routley but don’t go to Langley schools, like Pretorius’ two sons who still attend their old school in Surrey for lack of a conveniently located school in their new neighbourhood. Parents were told the board of education will try to arrange a public summit meeting on the land swap on May 31 with the board, parents and Township of Langley all in attendance. continued, PAGE 3

Police dog sniffs out suspect in apt. block from PAGE 1
The woman then said she was going to look for her lost shoe and bolted from the apartment. “She went right out the door [to the interior hallway of the building],” Leroy Flynn said. “Everything was just so fast” By then, police cars were pulling up outside. They were pursuing a green Ford pickup stolen earlier in the day from the 5300 block of 203 Street. The truck was being followed by RCMP when it pulled into the parking lot of the Flynns’ apartment building and two occupants bailed out, running in different directions. A police dog located the woman inside the apartment building. Shortly after she was arrested, a male suspect was picked up nearby. It was all over before the television broadcast finished. Police are recommending charges of possession of stolen property against a 42-year-old man of no fixed address and a 38-year-old woman from Langley.

ing designating a potential school site is not a guarantee, and the district can’t hope that “a school will appear from the sky” just because it owns a lot. Beaumont disputed complaints that parents were not informed of the change of plans, saying the Routley site has not been in the school district capital plan since 2008. Residents were consulted, she added. More than one parent challenged that statement, saying they received no notice. (See page 4 for story about board chair’s apology to Grade 6 student for a remark made during the presentations on the school site).
They were also told the land swap isn’t a done deal. In response to a question by Trustee Rob McFarlane, secretary-treasurer David Green said he understands the agreement between the three parties has not been signed. “The agreement will only be signed by the developer if the rezoning is approved [by the Township of Langley],” Green said. Superintendent Cheryle Beaumont defended the decision to shift the proposed school property, say-

When Grade 6 student Sherry Tung said she was sometimes late for classes because her school is so far away from her home and there was road construction along the route her parents drive, board of education chairperson Wendy Johnson had a solution. “Maybe you should organize your family better so they get up earlier, Johnson told Tung, when the soft-voiced pre-teen spoke in favour of keeping the Routley school property at the Tuesday night board meeting. (See story, page 1). The chair’s comment drew groans, catcalls and boos from the audience. Johnson said she Sherry Tung didn’t mean to hurt anyone’s feelings and if she had, she was sorry. Tung was taken aback. “I think it’s kind of mean, she told The Times as the meeting was wrapping up. Moments later, Johnson approached Tung and her mother to make a direct apology, saying she was trying to make a joke to lighten the mood. “It was not meant in a malicious way, Johnson said, adding she had the utmost respect for Tung’s bravery in speaking before a public meeting. Tung said she accepted the apology, but some parents in the audience seemed less forgiving, complaining that the remarks showed the board doesn’t take their concerns seriously.

Maureen Joyce will retire from her position as executive director of Langley Stepping Stone next month. A wine and cheese reception will be held on June 9.
We will perform comprehensive hearing screening at NO CHARGE for the first 15 qualified callers to determine if you are a candidate for the program.
On to the next step Stepping Stone executive director Maureen Joyce set to retire after 24 years BRENDA ANDERSON Times Reporter
What began in a sheltered workshop 24 years ago has evolved from a factory-like recycling and sorting depot to a cozy, home-like atmosphere where people can gather to enjoy a coffee, work on a computer, play a game or just enjoy the company of others who understand the challenges they face. That is the legacy Stepping Stone executive director Maureen Joyce will leave behind when she wraps up her 24-year career with the Langley mental health agency on June 10. “I think I’ve had the most fabulous dream job,” said Joyce, seated in her office inside the building on the edge of Linwood Park in Langley City. “This kind of work always excited me. It was pure excitement, I always wanted to make a difference,” she said.
And Joyce is leaving her post satisfied that she’s accomplished exactly that over her near quarter century on the job. “A lot of the things I hoped and dreamed — a lot of them I’ve achieved,” she said. “The saddest thing when I came here, aside from the poverty, was the lack of human contact — the isolation, loneliness and emptiness.” It’s not uncommon for people with mental health issues to become cut off from family and friends — their entire social circle — said Joyce. “Now, this is a real community. People come and find purpose to their day, something meaningful to do, moral support. “I can see broken people come through the doors, and within weeks or months I see a change because they’ve found a place where they belong.” About a decade ago, Joyce — through her work with Stepping Stone — became involved with a committee aimed at helping Langley’s growing homeless population. “In 2000, you started seeing the odd person on the streets,” she said. continued, PAGE 6

‘The most incredible ride’ from PAGE 5
As time went on, those numbers steadily increased, and yet raising awareness remained a very difficult row to hoe, she said, but out of the committee’s efforts grew affordable housing initiatives and outreach programs. “Still, many of the people we serve live in abject poverty. That hasn’t changed, Joyce said. Like any non-profit, securing funding has been an ongoing struggle for Stepping Stone. But that doesn’t mean there aren’t ways to get it, Joyce said. “We’ve had to be (tenacious), especially with mental health. It’s not one of those sexier causes. She spoke anywhere people would listen, and rather than take an adversarial stance, Joyce worked to form bonds with other agencies in the community seeking the same funding.
Although she would have liked to have reached the 25-year mark, Joyce knew she would feel it when the time was right to step away. It was around Christmas time last year that she began to sense the end was drawing near, she said. She’s looking forward to working in her garden and putting her new e-reader to good use, and she expects that her three grandchildren will take up a good share of her time, too. But she’s not ruling out finding some volunteer work to fill her time as well. Meanwhile, the executive director offered her thanks to the community for their support and understanding over the years, and to Stepping Stone staff and board of directors, who she described as “committed, dedicated and fun. “This has been the most incredible ride. We’ve laughed
together more than we’ve cried, she said. And Joyce isn’t fretting about who will fill her shoes once she’s gone or the direction they’ll take the agency. “There will be someone great who takes over, she said. “Whoever follows will have their own vision, and they’ll work with the board and the members to decide what that is, she said. “I always see growth, more housing, looking more to younger folks with mental health issues, looking at an aging population. “There are a lot more challenges out there. A wine and cheese reception will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, June 9 at Stepping Stone, 20101 Michaud Cres. Anyone who plans to attend to bid farewell to Joyce, is asked to RSVP by May 27 to Christine at 604-530-5033 or cderksen@ sscss.org.

Students out as college closes DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter
News that Langley College will close Aug. 31 came as a shock to Aldergrove resident Stacey Fleming and her fellow students. Fleming, a busy mother of three, has been working toward her certificate in early childhood education part-time at the college for about two years. The program trains students for a career working in daycare or preschools, Fleming explains. “We’re working with the children before they enter the school system.” The 28-year-old college in Langley has a good reputation. It was recently given an excellent rating by the Private Career Training Institutions Agency (PCTIA), the provincial government body that audits privatelyowned learning institutions in B.C. On Saturday (May 14), Fleming and her classmates were informed the college will close August 31. An e-mail from college director of instruction Claire Guy said the decision “arises as a result of Board of Education’s decisions regarding their budget delibera-

Plans for the Senate
ICBC big for its britches
T
he Conservatives now have a majority government, and Prime Minister Stephen Harper has promised that Senate reform will be on the government’s agenda over the next four years. If that’s the case, why did Harper appoint three defeated Conservative candidates to the Senate on Wednesday? Senate reform is complicated. While Alberta and some other western provinces favour electing senators, Quebec and most eastern provinces are opposed. The four Atlantic provinces actually have more senators than the four western provinces — 30 to 24 — and thus don’t want anything to change. Changing how the Senate is chosen would require a constitutional amendment. Given that no federal government wants to reopen the constitution, particularly with Quebec separatists in high gear for the next provincial election, it is highly unlikely that any constitutional discussion on the Senate will take place over the next four years. However, Harper has also suggested that the Senate could be gradually changed, with provinces holding elections for vacant Senate seats. He would then appoint those elected individuals to the Senate. He has also asked his appointed senators to serve for eight-year terms. He needs to explain in more detail why he found it necessary to appoint three defeated Conservatives to the Senate. Two of them resigned their Senate seats to run in the recent election. All three are from eastern provinces — Quebec and Newfoundland. If Harper has no plans for Senate reform, it is highly unlikely that any future prime minister will be willing to take this issue on. If no government is willing to do so, it is time that the Senate was abolished. It serves little real purpose at present, and is an anachronism at a time when democracy is seen by many around the world as something to strive for — even at the cost of death. Harper must tell the Canadian public why he appointed these three individuals to the Senate just weeks after their defeat, and explain his plans for Senate reform in detail.

he recent proposal by ICBC to raise insurance rates by up to 23 per cent for drivers who get even one ticket caused much concern when it was announced last week. But now Solicitor Shirley Bond has put the brakes on this bold proposition by ICBC, amidst a quickly growing backlash against a Crown corporation that appears to be growing too big for its britches. Currently a driver who commits a moving violation receives a fine and penalty points on his or her driving record. Incurring only one speeding ticket, worth three points, in a 12-month period would not cost a driver anything, but four or more points in that period would. Insurance Corporation of B.C. president and CEO Jon Schubert apologized Monday for floating the proposal, which would have seen drivers who got a speeding ticket having their insurance premiums rise an extra $1,000 on average over three years. This would be on top of the fines for speeding already imposed when they received the ticket. Bond said she ordered the public auto insurer to “go back to the drawing board and rethink the options” for major reforms to the rate structure. While the government was very quick to let the public know it was responsible for ICBC rethinking this policy change, we cannot forget that it was also this government that appointed the decision-makers at ICBC in the first place. This type of unmitigated power is getting out of control and cannot be allowed to go unchecked. At this rate every person in B.C. will soon be a criminal and the federal government might as well just put a fence around the whole province. —Merritt Herald The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Added congestion new standard Editor: Once again, Fat Cat Fassbender is caving into the developers and creating another congested situation on 54A Ave in Langley. When he and Langley City council allowed a development called “The Suede” to build a 69-unit complex with only 81 parking spots, and have their parking garage empty onto 54A Avenue instead of the rear of the complex, like every other complex on the street, it seems he has set the standard for added congestion on Langley streets to be part of real estate developments to come. Now there is a complex of Frank BUCHOLTZ/Langley Times townhomes to be built at the corner where Michaud Crescent, New multi-family complexes such as The Suede have made driving on 54A Avenue a challenge, as it is a narrow street with vehicles 201A Street and 54A Avenue come together. Even though this parked along both sides. new development has a Michaud When asked if the development can Crescent address and an existing change its parking entrance to Michaud driveway that empties onto that street, the I’m sure their Crescent, one of his worship’s hired guns City council is going to allow the developer mail. stated that doing so would not fit into the to change the parking access to enter 54A city’s plan for Michaud Crescent to be a Avenue.
pedestrian pathway? My question to that paid official is how can a street like Michaud Crescent, one that is twice as wide with traffic that moves two to three times as fast as that of 54A, be a “pedestrian pathway?” It doesn’t make a lot of sense to me but obviously, being one of the unwashed masses in Langley, I’m probably not supposed to understand. I guess our saving grace on our newly-narrowed onelane street is the fact that “The Suede” has only sold a couple of the 69 units they have available, and this new development is a year away so traffic has been the same as usual. But don’t worry about the money, Mr. Fassbender. tax revenue check is in the Bill Romswinckel, Langley City
‘Us’ versus ‘them’ council benefits no one Editor: Almost every time I look in the paper and read a comment about our current mayor, letter writers speak about how he has been treated by council. This “us” against “them” attitude is not doing anyone any good. Could our mayor have done anything different to work with council on issues, instead of saying he was bullied and laying blame on others? Mayor Dianne Watts of Surrey, when she was first elected, was in the same sort of predicament with virtually no support from the council that was aligned with a previous mayor. Yet she was able to work with council on the issues at hand and not let herself be
dissuaded or distracted by personality conflicts, such as is happening here in the Township. Now that’s real leadership. This petulance between our mayor and council has been going on since the first meeting of thed current council nearly three years ago. What has the mayor actually done when there has been no leadership during this entire term? I have heard countless times that our mayor is “not done yet.” Not done what? What has he started for that matter? Why is there so much hostility to Jack Froese running for mayor anyways? On his web page, one can see he has been involved with
numerous community groups, the chamber of commerce, Rotary club, and he received an award from the Aldergrove Agriculture Association for his farm. Imagine — a successful businessman and farmer who wants to run for mayor of a farming community. Resume … check. Someone so graciously advised that Froese should “get his feet wet” in municipal politics first. I for one like the confident “jump in with both feet” attitude that he has shown. That attitude is what made the Township originally, and perhaps that attitude is needed now. M. O’Donnell, Langley
Conservatives hypocritical on Senate reform Editor: With just two weeks gone by since the recent election, Stephen Harper appoints one defeated Tory candidate and reappoints two other defeated Conservatives to the Senate. Both had resigned their seats to run in the May 2 campaign. Consider the words found in Harper’s statement to the press announcing these selections: “Our government will continue to push for a more democratic, accountable and effective Senate.” The
What doublespeak. Maybe a question should be asked of our recently-elected MP regarding his opinion on stacking the Senate with defeated Conservative politicians. But perhaps the answer can be found in the November 16, 2007 Hansard in which Mark Warawa was recorded as saying “Mr. Speaker, I appreciate the comments that we have heard from the government House leader. I have also heard from my constitu-
ents that they are not happy with the Senate in its present form. They are asking for changes. They support what the government is proposing. They do want to see an accountable Senate. They would like to see senators elected, so the government’s plan is taking us in that direction.” Hypocrisy abounds. Shane Dyson, Aldergrove
PRICE GOUGING Editor: Please explain to me why it is that Abbotsford stations have dropped the prices on gas, but we have seen no relief on prices in the Langley area. Stations at 216 Street and Fraser Highway are still charging $1.38 per litre. There has been a five or six cent drop in gasoline prices in Abbotsford, but not in Langley. It is simply more price gouging. Gas stations and oil companies show they do not care about their customers. It’s all about the dollars. Debbie Atkinson, Langley
CUMMINS ABUSED Editor: Why is it that when a man with the courage of his convictions like John Cummins speaks his mind, he is lambasted in the press and on the radio? If a person dares speak up about homosexuality, he is subject to all kinds of abuse. On this topic, I believe Cummins spoke the truth. Is that not allowed any more? Are we all supposed to be politally correct, and bow to public pressure? The term “homophobic” is one that gay people coined themselves. We are made to feel that we are suffering from a disease. What utter rubbish. People who favour the gay lifestyle only want free speech for themselves, not for those who may have different views. David J. Standcumbe, Langley
RATS INVITED IN Editor: Re: The green can program. The last thing Aldergrove needs is a chance to attract more rats and mice with sloppy wet kitchen garbage put out in a “green can.” Local stores can hardly keep up with the demand for traps and poison to combat the epidemic of rats and mice in this area. Who thought this through? Or is someone in the pest control business or print company business in line to profit from encouraging more of a feeding frenzy for these pests? Or is this program just a costly print project to fill our recycle cans with? Pat Stockbrocks, Aldergrove

Larry Olson wasn’t going to let a little thing like a broken ankle keep him from flagging the first four-wheel race at the Langley Speedway oval since 1984. He wasn’t deterred by the fact the event featured custom-built ultra-light electric vehicles instead of the beefy V-8s that used to rampage around the track at the foot of 208 Street in South Langley. The Wednesday (May 18) event was the annual vehicle-in-a-box competition by BCIT students. Five teams of future high school shop instructors designed and built electrically-powered fourwheelers that had to fit in a box for assembly on race day. For Olson, who arrived with a plastic brace for the ankle he fractured less than three weeks earlier, it was an opportunity to see powered vehicles rounding the track one more time. As the official starter at the speedway from 1969 to to 1977, Olson flagged more than 9,000 races. Herpes outbreak worries locals Disease affects horses’ nerve cells
A
n outbreak of a severe neurological strain of equine herpes linked to the NCHA Western National Championship in Ogden, Utah, has members of the B.C. working cow community worried about the safety of attending local shows. The “hot” strain diagnosed in Ogden, which is now spreading across the western U.S., B.C. and Alberta, affects nerve cells and can cause permanent paralysis. A recently confirmed case in Armstrong has prompted local equine vets to advise their clients to keep their horses at home. “There is a risk at the moment, but there is no reason to panic. This is not an epidemic, but more likely a sporadic local situation which requires contact with infected animals. The best advice I can give is to keep your horses at home, on pasture, in their normal environment,” said equine veterinarian John Twidale. There is no vaccine which claims to be effective against this strain of herpes, he added, but strongly suggests worried horse owners talk to their veterinarians. According to Twidale, there are different strains of the equine herpes virus. One is a respiratory disease that can cause abortion in mares. The severity of the symptoms of this strain, however, varies from horse to horse. Some horses who carry the virus show no symptoms.Twidale believes it is passed from horse to horse. The first symptom is usually a spike in temperature. “It’s very similar to polio myelitis in humans. Some of the children who got juvenile polio got over it, some were paralyzed. It is an inflammation of the spinal cord and the brain. It is difficult to treat. We treat it with anti-inf lammatories,” said Twidale. Reports from the U.S., however, suggests vets there are also treating animals with human anti-viral drugs and immune system boosters. Working cow shows are being cancelled in both the U.S. and

Deflated? The right amount of air in your tires can help in your fuel consumption efforts. When tires are not inflated enough, they generate too much heat, wear out faster, and give you much more resistance against the roads. Make sure when checking your air pressure the tires are warm. Check to see how much pressure should be in your tires, make sure that you do not overfill. Doing this regularly will give you a smooth ride, and help improve your fuel consumption.

Langley track has rich history
we open at 11:30 am, 7 days a week
from PAGE 10
“We couldn’t get all the cars on the track at the same time so we would run two or three main events in each class. Langley Speedway hosted NASCAR Winston West races in 1971, 1972 and 1978, making it one of only three sites in B.C. to run NASCAR events. Racing ended in 1984 when the regional district parks authority refused to lease it out any more. The track has since been declared an historic site. Volunteers have cleaned up the abandoned oval in recent years, restoring it to the point where it is used for bicycle races and car shows. But the dents on the metal rails remain to show where cars made unplanned exits from the track, including a gouge and crack on the concrete side wall inflicted by an out-of-control car during one race that narrowly missed Olson. He got to brush up his flagging technique about two weeks before the BCIT event during a bicycle race at the oval. “That was a real privilege and an honour to do that and to actually see some kind of racing back at this wonderful facility that we have in Langley, he told The Times. For the ninth year of the BCIT competition, instructor Randy

Larry Olson was the official starter at Langley Speedway before it closed. When he heard it would be used for an electric vehicle contest on May 18, he refused to let a broken ankle keep him from waving the green and checkered flags one more time. Schultz had the idea of bringing motorized racing back to the oval. “It’s nice to come back and revisit the idea of what happened here in a much more [environmentally] sustainable way, Schultz said, watching the student teams assemble their creations. There were three events, a timed assembly of the boxed vehicles, a one-lap sprint around the track, then an endurance run.
The winner was the “Green Guzzler a low-slung design that came with its own stereo system. “We wanted low aerodynamics and we really focused on rolling resistance, Guzzler team member Regan Glendinning said. The red-and-white “Road Warrior design finished second. The three other contestants recorded did-not-finishes, two because of mechanical failure and one because the battery ran down.

“It is looking very positive that we will have workable options for you as early as next week,” Spence said in an e-mail to be sent to the 250 full- and part-time students from Langley, Abbotsford and Surrey affected by the shutdown. Most full-time students will be able to finish their studies by the end of August, but part-timers like Fleming will not. She has at least a year left to go in her part-time studies, and she has yet to hear anything specific from the college. “All we’ve been told is ‘we’re looking into options,’” she said. “Well, thanks.” Fellow student Amanda Mercer, an Abbotsford resident, said the college and students are not responsible for the budget over-

Langley resident Tanya Drury wonders where student academic records will be kept for prospective employers to check. “There are students who just started this course,” Drury said. “It’s shameful.” Student Jocelyn Veer, a Langley resident, wrote a letter to the
district calling the decision “irresponsible” and complaining the district should have given the college more warning. Veer said the funding cuts should be postponed a year. A Nov 8, 2010 review of Langley College by the PCTIA said the “the audit team has determined that students are receiving excellent Early Childhood Education and Health Care Assistants career training in a well-equipped and well-managed educational facility” adding that the audit team “was impressed with the high level of professionalism, dedication, and team spirit evident amongst the staff and students of Langley College.” Langley College is a private institution, which has received funds from the school district to offer certain adult education programs.

May Day activities Monday May pole dancing can mean only one thing — May Day celebrations in historic Fort Langley, the birthplace of B.C. The day’s festivities begin when the first pancake is flipped at 8 a.m. on Monday at the Fort Langley Lions Hall, at the corner of 88 Avenue and Glover Road. Beginning at 11 a.m. the parade will make its way through the village’s main street, Glover Road, followed by the may pole dancing, chicken barbecue, entertainment, rides and a market place in Fort Langley Community Park.
At the Fort Langley Community Hall, there will be face painting, a pie eating contest, children’s crafts, exhibits, a scavenger hunt, and treats from Tim Hortons. The old-fashioned pie eating contest runs in two heats, each with a maximum of five contestants. The challenge is to see who can eat the most pie in three minutes. Heats will go at 12:30 and 1:15 p.m., with the final challenge being held at 2 p.m. Entry fee for pie eaters is $2. Additional pies will be for sale on site. The B.C. Farm Museum, 9131
King St., will also be open for the public to take a glimpse into B.C.’s agricultural past. Admission to Fort Langley National Historic Site will be free, and Parks Canada will have a Centennial birthday cake, grand opening of Šxwimela Gift, new exhibits, farmers’ market and plant sale, and a bike decorating contest at 10 a.m. There will be a Bells and Whistles mini golf at the historic CN Station. This is the 89th year that Victoria Day has been celebrated in Fort Langley.

Township parks win provincial awards Langley Township won two provincial awards of excellence from the B.C. Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA). The environmental leadership award was presented for the Langley Demonstration Garden, and Willoughby Community Park received a parks and open spaces award. “These garden projects raise
awareness and foster appreciation of the natural environment, while inspiring sustainability practices in the homes and gardens of Langley residents and others,” stated BCRPA CEO Suzanne Allard Strutt.“The Township of Langley has illustrated its dedication through the Langley Demonstration Garden and Community Garden projects.”
In the case of Willoughby Community Park, the Township first had to solve the issues of the park’s proximity to the Latimer Creek watershed and how to handle water runoff. Rather than create the usual detention pond , the Township went a step further to develop a landscape guideline for the pond utilizing native trees and shrubs.

Nearly three-quarters of all housing starts were multiple-family units, with a total increase of 21 per cent over last April. “Multiple-family housing starts continue to grow in popularity throughout the CMA,” says CMHC Senior Market Analyst Robyn Adamache. “More than two-thirds of all multiple-family starts in April occurred in the North Vancouver district and the City of Burnaby, reflecting the strong housing demand in these areas.” In the Abbotsford CMA, housing starts totalled 21 for April, bringing the 2011 total to 188. As in Vancouver, multiple-family units
were responsible for much of the increase. Canada-wide, the seasonally adjusted annual rate of total housing starts decreased to 179,000 in April from 184,700 in March, but in B.C., April’s rate of urban housing starts moved from 18,300 in March to 22,600 for an increase of 23.5 per cent. “Housing starts moved lower in April mostly because of decreases in multiple construction across the country and in rural starts,” says Bob Dugan, chief economist at CMHC’s Market Analysis Centre. “The multiple segment market in Ontario and Quebec contributed the most to the overall decline in Canada.” However, urban starts increased by 5.3 per cent in the Prairies and by 10.4 per cent in the Atlantic provinces.
Surrey single-family homes
Highlands provides luxury living by Colin Oswin
Looking to move up a level? Marathon Homes’ Highlands at Sullivan Ridge development (located at 60A Ave. and 146 St. in Surrey) may be just the ticket. Descriptions of the development at the Highlands website feature words like “exclusive”, “premium” and “luxury”, and this terminology is certainly well-earned. The Highlands features 103 single-family homes in six different configurations ranging between 2,696 to 3,488 square feet. Sales Manager Andrea McArthur says each home is packed with top-quality accoutrements, including granite countertops, extensive crown moulding, stainless
steel appliances, six-inch baseboards throughout and tile flooring that extends from the kitchen into the laundry room, the secondary bathroom and even the basement bathroom. During construction, the floors were built using an I-joist system designed to prevent squeaking when people walk on them.
McArthur says all of these elements add up to a luxurious experience for homeowners. “Our standard finishings are upgrades everywhere else,” she says. Buyers can choose from six different exterior colour schemes, as well as three designer colour schemes for the interior. Vinyl siding on the outside is enhanced with wood trim, while cedar fencing frames professionally landscaped front and back yards. Select homes feature a great-room layout, which means the kitchen, dining and living areas are combined into a huge open space. McArthur says
this makes for an easy atmosphere, because family members who are using different areas of the house can still keep in contact. Buyers looking for more traditional layouts can find those as well. “They’re very pleased to see that they have so many different choices available to them,” McArthur says. Each home comes with a finished basement, so each detail (baseboards, carpeting and everything else) will match with the rest of the house. The spa-inspired master bathrooms feature big soaker tubs surrounded by continued on page 3

For families looking to upgrade from a townhome, McArthur says the Highlands is perfect. The surrounding community has elementary and high schools nearby, as well as conveniently located shopping. Recreation facilities can be found at the nearby expansive, 71,000 square-foot Tong Louie Family YMCA. Sisters Sandie Parley (left) and Andrea Zaiser recently bought the Hilltop and plan a celebration on Sunday to mark the 65th anniversary of the Fraser Highway diner.
The Hilltop Cafe is where you’re served history with your burger and fries. The popular diner has survived ownership changes and lows in the economy and, tucked in between a used-car dealership and an RV lot, the diner hasn’t changed that much since it opened its doors 65 years ago at 23904 Fraser Hwy. In March, Andrea Zaiser and her sister, Sandie Parley, bought the Hilltop Cafe which over the years has gained a reputation for its fabulous pies, mountain high burgers, all-day breakfasts, welcoming ambience, and location for a number of films. They plan to put their own special stamp on the Hilltop Cafe, and plan to celebrate the milestone

the restaurant business ing X-files, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Butterfly Effect, and Smallville. Investing in the business was a giant leap of faith for the sisters. “It was like diving off the deep end into a pool we didn’t know,” said Zaiser. They found it challenging at first, “but we wouldn’t change it for the world. We’re having a blast.” She credits Sandie and Kris for the way the business continues to grow. “I’m a very lucky
woman to have Sandie and Kris believe in me that much,” she said, adding that one of the goals is to take the Hilltop Cafe back to its roots:The ‘40s. That means a change in music to swing, big band and jazz. The rodeo posters and baseball hats are slowly disappearing. That ambience will be a delight to old-timers who love to sit and reminisce, and younger customers and those unfamiliar with the cafe. And although the business is re-creating the atmosphere of the ‘40s,
it’s on Twitter and Facebook where customers can find out the day’s specials. These don’t contain deli meats. The beef and turkey are roasted in the kitchen where the soups, hand-cut fries, burgers and those famous pies — lemon meringue, banana cream and coconut cream pies — are made. The Hilltop Cafe is open from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday. Zaiser and Parley hope to extend those hours so that the cafe opens at 6 a.m.

Customers can enjoy a slice of birthday cake on the house. The event promises to offer a healthy serving of nostalgia in a diner which has altered little since it opened in 1946. Just inside the entrance is a collage of photos of people, mostly men, who have successfully consumed the Everest Burger, a long-time menu favourite consisting of three five-ounce burger patties, with bacon, mozzarella, cheddar, ham and farmer sausage. It sells for $19.95. Parley’s son, Kris, is the cook. She helps in the kitchen and the front counter, while Zaiser does “a little bit of everything,” including the paperwork. FASTER, MORE ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS FOR SUSPECTED BREAST CANCER “Our focus is rapidity of diagnosis. We're eliminating unnecessary delays in a one-stop shop environment.” - Dr. Peter Doris, Surgeon and Physician Lead, Breast Health Clinic, Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre
PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE Get a sneak peek inside the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre, located at the corner of 140th Street and Fraser Highway in Surrey, by joining us at our public open house Monday, May 30 from 3pm – 7pm. For more details go to www.fraserhealth.ca
Women within the Fraser Health region will have access to a special Breast Health Clinic that streamlines and significantly reduces the diagnostic process for suspected breast cancer, starting June 1 at the Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre. The clinic, based on the European Society of Mastology (Eusoma) model, will bring together the equipment and specialist’s necessary to provide a definitive diagnosis 99 per cent of the time, in less than 21 days from when the appointment at the Clinic is booked. The current average is three months for diagnosis. Quicker, accurate answers Surrey resident Heidi Kerr, who is currently being treated for breast cancer, recalls how distressing it was to wait six weeks for a diagnosis after having an abnormal mammogram. “The waiting is definitely the worst part,” Kerr said. “The fact that you don’t know: do you have cancer or do you not have cancer?” Much of the delay in the typical diagnostic process is due to several appointments at different locations. The Breast Health Clinic has a multi-disciplinary, integrated approach that provides same-day access
for three key tests – physical exam, medical imaging (mammogram and/or ultrasound) and tissue sample (biopsy) – and ensures coordination between specialists to provide a faster, accurate diagnosis. These tests can often be completed in one visit.
imaging equipment and reduce patient travel within the building. A special waiting room will provide breast health patients with a calming, private space while waiting for their tests when several are performed on the same day.
"I have always had great compassion for the women who are going through the diagnostic cascade for months and all they want to know is, do I or don't I?” said Dr. Peter Doris, head of surgery at Surrey Memorial Hospital and physician lead for the Breast Health Clinic. “We're eliminating unnecessary delays in a one-stop-shop environment.”
Importance of regular check-ups It’s important to perform breast self-exams regularly and have a medical breast exam at least once every 24 months. If you have a change in your breast please see your family doctor. Your doctor can refer you to the Breast Health Clinic at the Pattison Outpatient Centre if further investigation is required.
This “triple assessment” will be supported with Surrey’s first digital mammogram unit, which will produce more detailed images and enable the use of new biopsy equipment that can rapidly and accurately identify a greater range of lesions. Many women will get a definite benign result on the same day, and a large percentage will receive a definitive diagnosis in as little as seven days. Only a small proportion of cases will be complicated enough to require 21 days for diagnosis. Patient-centred approach The second-floor location for the Breast Health Clinic was chosen to provide ready access to
By age 50, women should make screening mammograms part of their regular health routine once every two years. For easy access, the BC Cancer Agency’s Screening Mammography Program has added a new location that will reside within the Pattison Outpatient Centre on the same floor as the Breast Health Clinic. To book a screening mammography appointment please call 604-877-6187.

Business aims to Impress A new Langley business is hoping to make a lasting impression. Instant Imprints, a promotional marketing franchise which produces custom T-shirts, signs, banners, business apparel, school and team clothing and other promotional products, opened its doors at their new Langley location recently with a grand opening and open house. The U.S. based company, which began in 2002, expanded to Canada in 2007. The Langley store, located 6360 202 Street, is the third
Instant Imprints location in B.C. It is owned by Manj and Nick Sidhu. “Instant impressions offers limitless solutions, but only one purpose, helping our business customers promote,” Sidhu said. “We can imprint on anything from pens, golf balls and clothing to cars and buildings.” One unique aspect of the business is that large volumes of an order are
not needed as any size quantity can be ordered. UUUUU The importance of a business’ location is the topic at the Greater Langley Chamber of Commerce breakfast meeting next week. Presenter Mike Rink, the marketing director for Wink Creative, will talk to business owners about the tools to prepare for the next wave of marketing opportunities. “Is your business positioned to capitalize on a location-based future? When

a customer fires up their iPhone or Blackberry, will they find you?” Those are just a couple of the questions he will answer. The event is on Wednesday, May 25 at the ABC Country Restaurant (19219 56 Ave.). Registration is at 6:45 a.m. and the hour-long presentation begins at 7 a.m. Cost is $20 for Chamber members and $25 for non-members. The price includes breakfast. Competing in barrel racing — a rodeo event where a competitor and their horse attempt to complete a cloverleaf pattern around preset barrels in the fastest time — Cunningham won $10 at a local rodeo. “Back in the day, that was a lot of money,” she said with a laugh. As she progressed in the sport, the prize money kept increasing, to the point that as a young teenager, she could “buy a whole new wardrobe” with the $50 prize money. “You get to make a little bit of money and that is pretty enticing,” she explained about the allure of the sport.

Mustangs tops at Eagle Classic It is a three-peat for the Langley Mustangs as the local track and field club captured the most outstanding team trophy at the Eagle Classic. The track and field meet was held at Maple Ridge Secondary on Saturday. Individual trophy winners included Paul Buckingham, 12, and Chloe Hetherington, 13, winning the Debbie Brill High Jump Awards, and Daniel Pavlic, 13, and Jaclyn Pauley, 13, winning the Tara Perry Sprint Awards. In addition to the trophies, four members of the Mustangs set new meet records. Twelve-year-old Drey Blair reached 9.45m in the shot put, Brooke Hoolesma, 12, completed the 1,200m race in 4:13, Megan Champoux, 12, finished the 800m in 2:31 and Josiah Perovich, 10, ran the 1,000m in 3:47. UUUUU Jon Mihic wrapped up a solid season with the Kansas Wesleyan Coyotes with a firstteam all-star selection. The junior outfielder from Langley was named to a first team all-KCAC (Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference) all-star. Mihic finished second on the team with a .394 batting average, and was tied for the team lead with a dozen doubles. He
also had 39 RBIs in 48 games. The Coyotes (37-17) season ended on Saturday with a loss to Lubbock Christian at the 2011 NAIA Baseball national championships. A win would have advanced them to the NAIA World Series. Mihic had two hits and an RBI in a losing cause. The team won both the league’s regular season and post-season titles.
UUUUU Having helped Trinity Western win the national university championship in March, two members of the Spartans volleyball team will look to lead Canada to the gold medal this summer. Rudy Verhoeff and Marc Howatson were named to Canada’s roster for the upcoming FISU (International University Sports Federation) Games. The Games run Aug. 12-23 in Shenzhen,

Josh Brunsch spearheaded the Thunder attack with three goals and an assist, while Cal Slade provided some tough defence and physical play, plus one assist.

Cloverdale a ‘home rodeo’ from PAGE 40
and a couple of concussions — Cunningham just shrugs those off. “Nothing that would make you quit,” she explained. This year marks her 25th appearance at the Cloverdale Rodeo — which begins today (Friday) and runs until Sunday — but first since it turned into an invitational event in 2008. Cunningham, an Aldergrove resident for the past four years, loves the fact she is competing pretty much in her own backyard. Especially since it means she and her Zipper, her running quarterhorse, get to sleep in their own beds at night. She has tasted success at this event before. “It’s top-loaded with those really good people,” she said. “I’ve always
done really well at Cloverdale, I’ve won a ton of money out of there, but I didn’t have my name in the top five, so I didn’t get invited until this year.” Someone backed out and Cunningham got the invite to attend and she didn’t give it a second thought. She said with the level of talent coming to Cloverdale, it’s important to have the right mindset. “When you get to this level, it’s pretty well all psychological,” she said. “You approach it the same way as you do any other rodeo, you don’t change the game plan – what’s been successful in the past – you don’t change the game plan just because there’s more money added.” — with files from Kevin Diakiw/Black Press

For the second straight year, the Langley Olympians proved they are a force not only in the water, but in the stands. The swim club was given the team spirit award, which they also won in 2010, at the West Coast Open Meet in Richmond. Leading the charge in the pool was Chelsea Borrowdale, 11, who achieved her age group national qualifying time in the 200 breast, finishing in 2:59.41. This qualifies her for a trip to Montreal in July and a spot in the age group nationals. She also won a pair of gold medals in the 100 breast and 400 individual medley events. Other medal performances included: Emily d’Entremont, 11, second in the 200 fly; Mackenzie Dong, 10, first in the 100 fly, second in 100 free; Lisa Grier, 10, second in 100 free; Joshua Kim, 9, second in 100 back and a B.C.AA provincial qualifying time, and second in the 100 fly; Renae Ledoux, 11, second in 100 breast; Avery Martin, 10, first in the 100 free, third in the 100 back and 200 back; and Robyn Nakano, 11, first in 200 fly. Eight-year-old Jaime Lavoie also set a new club record in the 100 breast (1:57.42). UUUUU A team of six Olympians swimmers were in Edmonton for the Keyano International Age Group Meet, where they were up against 400 swimmers. Martha Metcalfe led the charge for the Olympians as the 14-year-old won four medals: a gold (400 IM), silver (200 fly) and two bronze (800 free, 200 IM). Hillary Metcalfe, 12, won gold in the 200 breast and bronze in the 100 breast, and Justin Schramm, 12, won gold in the 200 fly and bronze in the 100 fly. Michael MacDonald won bronze in the 1,500 free.

Two years ago, it looked like the Langley Thunder had turned the corner, finally qualifying for the Western Lacrosse Association playoffs with a young and up-andcoming nucleus of talent. But after the team took a step backwards, missing the post-season in 2010, the senior A lacrosse is poised to get back into the dance. “Last year, we didn’t improve, whereas everyone else did, said Gerry Van Beek, the Thunder general manager. Langley never recovered from an 0-4 start to the season, finishing 6-12 and in sixth place of the seven-team senior A WLA team. In 2009, they had qualified for the playoffs with a 10-7-1 record. The goal for Langley and its new coaching staff is to return to the 2009 form the team displayed. “There is excitement in this
room ... to prove we can play well in this league, Van Beek said. “Our team is out to prove we can do this. “Basically, the team is going to be bigger, faster, stronger, he added. “We have added talent in areas we thought we needed to add talent. Some of the added talent included Kerry Susheski and Athan Iannucci, who are both known for their offensive prowess. Susheski is a former rookie of year and league MVP and has 221 goals and 225 assists). Iannucci broke lacrosse legend Gary Gait’s single-season scoring record in the NLL when he notched 71 goals during the 2008 season. He also won the 2007 WLA scoring title and in 84 career WLA games, has 154 goals and 167 assists. The pair should help pick up the slack with last year’s leading scorer Garrett Billings (26 goals, 37 assists) and Stephan Leblanc (20 goals, 40 assists) who are set to join Ontario’s Six Nations Chiefs. Billings, a Langley Minor Lacrosse product, also helped the Toronto Rock win NLL title on Sunday. He scored two goals in the championship game and was second on the
team with 31 goals and 44 assists in 15 games. Rod Jensen takes over behind the bench, and he brings a wealth of coaching experience. Last season, he helped Coquitlam win the Minto Cup, the Canadian junior A championship. And at the WLA level a few years ago, he took an underdog Adanacs team to the Mann Cup, Canada’s senior A championship. Jensen has also coached at the National Lacrosse League level. He will be joined by Darcy Rhodes, Shaun Springett and Fred Kloomp. To be successful, it is as simple as the players carrying out the game plan. “Our players have to fulfill their commitment to follow the program the coaching staff has put forward to them, Van Beek said. “Everything is there for them, they just need to execute. UUUUU The Thunder season begins tonight (Friday) when they play in Victoria. They also face Maple Ridge on Sunday. The team’s home opener is Wednesday (May 25) at the Langley Events Centre against the Coquitlam Adanacs at 7:45 p.m.
