n local car circles, car owners may from time to time forget someone’s name. But if you say, “You know, the guy with the purple truck”, or ‘He’s the guy that has the red T-bird convertible,” everyone will know who you’re talking about. The guy with the purple truck in Langley is Clay Clemas. Clay is a long time Langley resident and has supported the Langley Good Times Cruise-in since it began. “I always try to be the first one registered every year,” says Clay with a smile. “I really enjoy car shows and the Langley show, here in my home town is one of the best.” In the early years of the Cruise-in, Clay volunteered by marking parking spots on the streets or stringing barrier ropes in Douglas Park for the Concours de Elegance display. Clay has been to many shows over the years and his collection of dash plaques and memorabilia is a testament where he has shown his vehicles. “Hot August Nights in Reno is one of the biggest shows in North America, I have been to that and our Langley Cruise-in rivals that show for the organization and the variety of cars on display.” Currently Clay has 2 cars that he takes to shows, his 1951 Ford pick-up and his 1980 Camaro Z28. His vehicles consistently win trophies and praise wherever he displays them. The Camaro is a stock vehicle while his pick-up has been totally restored from the frame up. “I bought the truck on-line from Saskatchewan, I was impressed with the pictures. When they delivered it I was dismayed to find it was a junker.

“It gives us a chance to reminisce about the cars we gave away and share some good

Apparently, the pictures on the internet were taken about 30 years before.” Clay found the original owner and learned a lot about the history of the truck and then went about the restoration project. “I’m a specialist at taking things apart,” Clay explains. ”I rely on the professionals to put it back together and we have so many talented body men and painters in Langley you cannot only get a great restoration done and you’re supporting local business.” Clay found out that the original owner had paid about $1400.00 for the truck new. Since the restoration, Clay has had it appraised and insured for $45,000.00. “Not too bad for a rusty junker from Saskatchewan,” Clay remarks. The first few years Clay entered a 1966 Cadillac convertible that attracted lots of attention. Clay recalls one Cruise-in memory with the Cadillac. “One Cruise-in year, we went to the Hillcrest Drive-in until 1 a.m. On the way home the water pump let go. I had a box of spare parts and sure enough there was another pump in there so

I worked most of the night to get it going, cleaned up and went downtown to line up. I wasn’t going to miss the show.” Clay is happy the show is back on, mostly for the impact it has on local charities. “I have a family member that is a cancer survivor so I know how much the local organizations do. I’m glad to have a chance to give back in some way.” In addition to the fundraising, Clay points out that the event is a great day for the families. “I enjoy seeing people of all ages looking at the cars and listening to them tell stories about their Dad’s car or their Grandpa’s truck. It gives us a chance to reminisce about the cars we gave away and share some good memories. “I think it’s nice that our city can provide something the whole family can enjoy. There is lots to do and lots to see and most people don’t get to see all of it in one day.” Like so many other car owners, Clay enjoys showing off his vehicles and talking about them. “I’m going to miss the Friday night cruise to the drivein this year. It was a great part of the show and my wife Lorna and I enjoyed waving back to the crowds that gathered along the cruise route.” “The whole week-end is a social gathering, including the swap meet at Kwantlen on Sunday. It really shows off our town and we’ve got to meet some great people and make some good friends.” Clay Clemas is great ambassador for Langley and like so many local classic car owners, he is proud to be a long time supporter of the Langley Good Times Cruise-in.

long with many delighted car fans, families and businesses, the City of Langley is giving Cruise-In a warm welcome back. The event not only means a lot to the hot rod community and local charities, but it is also very important to the City of Langley itself. “It’s great exposure for the City. It brings a lot of people into the downtown,” said Langley City Mayor Peter Fassbender. “It’s a great event that draws people from all over, predominately from the northwest here and from Washington state especially. But we have had people who have come from England in the past − there was even a couple of people from Australia that I had met, so we have many people that come here and it’s just a great event.” With crowds upwards of 100,000 expected to flood the streets of Downtown Langley, there are many opportunities for promoting the City, but also many precautions that need to be taken. Increased policing, manning of barricades and security for the hundreds of hotrods parked on the streets all need to be taken into account to ensure the event stays family friendly and safe. Mayor Fassbender recognizes these challenges that come with hosting such a large event, and acknowledges that not everyone may benefit. He agrees that some businesses may be impacted negatively from

the street closures and large crowds, and that residents in the area may be disturbed. But on the flip side, it is a great chance for locals to get out and enjoy their community, and there is also a large marketing opportunity present for merchants to take advantage of. “It reinforces our sense of community,” Fassbender said. “Those [businesses] that see it as a marketing opportunity get exposure to a lot of folks. I think there is a business value that comes out of it for the downtown, if not on the day than in the future because people see that we have a lot going for ourselves,” he added. There are many other good things that Cruise-In brings to the City, as the mayor points out. It helps raise large sums of donations for local charities that benefit the Langley community, it unites the businesses and residents together and it creates a great family event for people to go out and enjoy. “Cruise-In is a wonderful event, it’s a great family day, it’s a great day for people who love cars. When you see the crowds, you see people of all ages who come out and walk the streets, and that’s a good thing,” he said. “To me, with all of the challenges that come with closing down the city for a day, the benefits I think outweigh that.”

he Ultimate Garage raffle is back, and once again is living up to its name. Worth a staggering $19,974.31, this year’s Ultimate Garage takes three truck loads to transfer all of the tools and parts in the package, which are donated to the raffle by Lordco Auto Parts and its suppliers. “It has almost everything a home shop would need,” said Mike Coates, branch manager of Lordco Auto Parts in Langley. “Anyone that has a shop established already or just a little garage at home would find it really useful.” For several years Lordco has been sponsoring the Langley Good Times Cruise-In by building a “garage” worth of tools and equipment to put up for raffle. All proceeds go directly to the Cruise-In charities, which Coates says is the best part of the whole kit. “I am a hot rod guy, I see cars all the time so I don’t usually go to other car shows. But the one thing I like about the Cruise-In, and I think it makes it different than other car shows, is

it’s 100 per cent charity,” he said. “And I think it’s just awesome that they do that. It pushes me to put together a great garage.” The entire kit will be on display at the CruiseIn in front of the one-way portion of Fraser Highway at Glover Road. The only part missing will be a Rotary Evolution 9,000 lb. four-post hoist, which takes an incredible five hours to set up, and five hours to take down. With a value of over $3,000 this is one of the most expensive items in the kit. “The four-post hoist is really neat because a lot of people don’t have them. A lot of backyard guys would really like it,” Coates said. The Ultimate Garage has everything car savvy you can think of. There are service carts full of tools from Seattle Tool, Lincoln oil drains for oil changes, oil filter wrenches in almost every size from Plews, an electric pressure washer, and an engine crane and engine stand with a floor jack and jack stands from Performance Tools. And with even more pieces ranging from me-

Worth nearly $9,000, this is by far the most expensive item in the kit, and something that Coates says will be a real eye catcher. “There’s a flat bed truck separate just for the tool box because it is 10 feet long alone,” Coates said. “It’s just so big. I’d love to have all of the garage, but I think that the tool box is the biggest. All the tools will be able to fit into that no problem.” And all of this can be yours for only $10. Tickets are on pre-sale at Lordco Auto Parts, 5825 200 St., from the last week of August until the day of the event, with the remainder sold at the Cruise-In at the souvenir tent (located beside the Ultimate Garage display). Cost is $10 for one ticket or $25 for three. With only 2,400 tickets issued, they are sure to be a hot item.

angley Good Times Cruise-In will feature some of the hottest cars and trucks on the show circuit, but it’s on the following day that you’ll have your best chance to purchase one of them, or to look for that elusive part. The annual Swap Meet and Car Corral will take place Sunday, Sept. 11, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the parking lot at Kwantlen Polytechnic University, just off of Highway 10 and Glover Road. Steve Paul, past organizer of the event, says it may be a small meet, but it’s large on popularity. “It was decided a few years back to extend the venue of the Cruise-In, and what we found was, people were showing up on Sunday, and there was very little going on,” Paul explained. That’s how the swap meet got its start, and today, it generates thousands of dollars to be split between Langley Cruise-In charities, and the Kwantlen Polytechnic University Foundation. Proceeds donated to the foundation will go towards Kwantlen’s sponsorship program for stu-

dents who can’t afford classes. There are two components to the Swap Meet. The first is the actual parts swap, which will offer everything from rusty door handles for that rare make and model, to new tools and more. The second component is the Car Corral, where you pay $20 per parking stall to put your car in the mix, and up for sale. It could be a finished, show-quality hot rod, or a project waiting for a motivated new owner. Paul says the popular Car Corral featured at the Swap Meet, was started out of necessity. “People who were showing their cars in the grand event on Saturday would have ‘for sale’ signs on their cars, and often times, potential buyers can’t find the owners in the maddening crowd so they could try the car out. “So we decided to put in the Car Corral component, and it’s one of the biggest presences at the swap.” Paul says it brings the buyer and seller together, and raises money at the same time. “It’s an excellent venue for people who are at-

tempting to sell their cars,” he said. Lori Watts, organizer of the swap this year, says they’ve had up to 200 cars and 50 vendors in the past. “The car sale has been quite large in size and the swap meet much smaller in the past,” she said. “But it’s always been a great turnout.” Make sure you come with an empty stomach, too. The Rotary Club of Langley will be hosting a breakfast and lunch throughout the day. Have an old box of parts sitting around collecting dust? Or how about that project car that never really got off the ground? Pull them out and take them down to the Kwantlen parking lot. “It’s been largely successful and a win-win for the event and participating charities,” Paul said. Pre-registration is optional for both the Car Corral and the Swap Meet. Either call the Chamber of Commerce, 604-530-6656, or visit them at 5761 Glover Road for entry forms. It’s nice to know they are all over the Pacific Northwest and beyond.” Blair got his start at the age of five by drawing heavy construction equipment with his Dad. “My Dad was a heavy equipment operator and we started drawing bulldozers and trucks, then in school, I was the guy that was always doodling cars on my notebooks. When I was 18 I started drawing caricatures and that led to some commission work and the art became a sideline job and a hobby.” Blair has produced art work for other events including the Langley International Festival and the local Harley Davidson dealer. “I do a lot of work for individuals as well. I have done cats and dogs and caricatures of owners with their cars for birthdays or anniversaries. The car guys really love it and I do it in all different mediums so there is a variety. My wife and family are very supportive and they have gotten used to the door bell ringing and someone showing up with a box full of photos.” Blair has produced work for the Langley Times and newspapers in Ontario and also does design work for B.C. With 13 top prize trophies to be won in a variety of categories, there’s sure to be a unique collection of motorcycles from all makes and models. “It’s about the pride and joy of owning a bike. It’s people who have made them shine, and are now showing them off,” said Ingrid Barnes, organizer of the Bike Show ‘n’ Shine. Everything from sport bikes to vintage, tour, metric and cruisers will be present. Plus some special custom 2012 bikes will also be on display from Barnes Harley Davidson. “In the past we have had 60 plus bikes, so we are hoping for a great turnout again,” Barnes said. Sponsored by Barnes Harley-Davidson in Langley, Barnes says that she loves being a part of Cruise-In every year to help support the local charities. “We want to be part of the Langley community,” she said. “Barnes Harley-Davidson is a familyowned business and we really do believe in community. And I think that sometimes people have a stereotype of bikers. But we have huge hearts and we love to do things for charity and more than anything support local charities. We want to give back to the community.” This year the Bike Show ‘n’ Shine is featuring the band Richard Stepp, which will be playing a variety of 50’s and 60’s rock n’ roll hits all day long. They will also be collecting donations from motorcycle parking for the general public, which will be in a portion of the casino parking lot. Barnes says she is looking forward to a fun-filled day of fundraising and spectating at the Cruise-In this year. “I just love the atmosphere of Cruise-In,” Barnes said. “I love the sounds. There’s the sounds of rumble in the early morning of the cars coming and the roar of the bikes. The smiles − everyone’s happy. This isn’t Disneyland, but it’s the happiest place in Langley. Everywhere you look people are smiling.” Both a bike and hot rod enthusiast (her husband Greg Barnes owns a 1937 Chevy in pewter), Barnes says that the Cruise-In encompasses more than just shiny chrome. “I love people watching, and I know it’s about the cars and bikes but it is also people’s reactions to them. It’s great for the owners to see people love their cars. It’s a boost for them,” she said. t won’t be long now until Jay Finlay of Sun City Arizona tunes up her 1953 Mercury Monterey convertible, gives it a good shine and heads north to Langley for the Langley Good Times

Cruise-in. No doubt she will hook up with other classic vehicles on the way from Idaho and Oregon. Still more will be on the way from Issaquah, Sammamish, Bellevue and Seattle as the Langley show draws a good crowd from Washington State. The ferries will bring a large contingent over from all parts of Vancouver Island. More will head south from the Cariboo and the Okanagan and join up with others from the Kootneys. Still more will climb over the Rockies from Alberta. Some of the ‘Trailer Queens’ make the journey safe inside specially designed trailers while the more adventurous car owners pack a tool kit and spare parts and make the drive. Even though the Lower Mainland boasts a huge collection of vintage and classic automobiles, Langley has become a major draw and a very popular show for all types of automotive enthusiasts from all over. Whether they are in a British car club, a vintage association or an individual with a rat rod, they are all glad the show is back on this year. Rick Lewis from Ottawa has been a regular attendee at the Good Times Cruise in. When asked how he came to find the Langley show, Rick replied,

“I have family in Aldergrove, Chilliwack and Whistler. I discovered the Langley Cruise-In during one of my many family visits some years ago and have made a number of trips back specifically co-ordinated to coincide with your show. I believe I have made it for 3 or 4 shows now. “I have been to the Barrie Ontario show twice as well as Carlyle and Hershey once each. I have a 1957 Chevy two door 210 (for 29 years now) and a 1966 Mustang Coupe (for 12 years now). I have been going to car shows for over 30 years now and I would rate the Langley show as the best in Canada. I am so glad that you will be having the show again this year and I wish you continued success for the future.” Rick’s brother Regan and Dad live in Aldergrove and they also attend the Cruise-in. Regan has a number of antique and classic cars including several Model A’s and his Dad has a very nice 1931 Ford Victoria. You could say they have the car bug in the family, and like many other families they use events like the Cruise-in as an annual reunion. John and Helen Hicks travel from England and have used the trip to purchase vehicles while they are here. They have made close friends with local car people and with help from the locals they have purchased Model A’s and shipped them in containers back to England. They now often stay as guests of the local folks while they are here. If the visitors don’t have friends or relatives in Langley, there is plenty of

the truth. Strumming out a mix of rockabilly, blues and surf music, his band “kind of grabs all styles from the 50s and 60s,” he said. Returning for the second year to Cruise-In, Dick Cash will once again be entertaining audiences with their expansive repertoire from good old rock ‘n roll and Johnny Cash covers to original soulful songs. Hynd describes the music of Dick Cash as “really raw and kind of primal.” “It’s timeless. It’s not complex, but it has a good beat to it. Everyone can relate to it,” he said. Formed in 2006, Dick Cash was created rather nonchalantly between Hynd and his old highschool buddy Torin Opper (bass guitarist). They were working a day job together and playing in two separate bands, when they decided to collaborate and form one of their own. Since then they have gone through three different drummers, with Langley’s Bob Schwartz taking the role now. The name of the band, although often thought to be a play on Johnny Cash, has nothing to do with the country music legend. It actually surfaced from an inside joke between Hynd and a friend of his in another band. “I give credit [for the name] to my friend. Literally we were in different bands and he was at a gig. He has a real dry sense of humour, so when I said ‘Mark, how was the gig?’ he said ‘we played well but it was dick cash.’” Hynd always joked that he would start a band called dick cash, and eventually he actually followed through with it. “It kind of fits that name on all levels so it works,” he said. “It’s a simple name, but always open to debate.” This is Hynd’s fourth band since he entered the music industry in 1996, and he says this time around, “pardon the cliche, but I had to get back to the roots.” “My favorite song to play is Lonesome Hound by the Beat Farmers. It’s the epitome of the lonesome, driving at night song. Like that David Lynch lost highway type. siast, Hynd says no one in his band currently owns a classic car, but they are all definite fans of them. “I used to have a ‘67 Ford Falcon, that I really liked,” he said. “I had it about 10 years ago and it was mint and gorgeous.” The hot rod crowd is the perfect audience for the timeless music of Dick Cash, and they have played at numerous car shows in the past, including the Fraser Valley World of Wheels car show and auction. “The Cruise-In is a great event,” Hynd said. “It brings everyone out there. It’s nice that it is back and it’s cool that it’s a community thing. This will be the sixth year Steve Elliott, aka Elvis Elite, performs at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In − an event which he says he is very excited for. “Car shows are one of my favourites to perform at. I feel like I can be a real part of them,” Elliott said. “Elvis, the classic cars and the type of music we do, it all fits in with the Cruise-In.” A hot rod enthusiast himself, Elliott is the proud owner of a ‘56 Ford, which he uses during performances. “I’m not like some of those car guys who own 20 cars and never drive them. I have one and I drive it,” Elliott jokes. “But having a ‘57 Chev, baby blue with a white soft top, would be great. One day.” Elliott has only had his alter ego for about 10 years. mong the glamour and the glitz of hotrods showing at the Cruise-In this year is a large, green and very unconventional ride. A mobile homeless shelter, right smack in the middle of Douglas Park. But this is no ordinary shelter. The Temporary Homeless Relief Shelter (THRS) is a 40 ft recycled shipping container that can be trucked to any location in the Lower Mainland. Outfitted with eight heated rooms, it can be set up and dismantled in only 30 minutes, making it a perfect portable back up for overflowing shelters during the winter. “It’s one of those things where you see a problem and you say ‘we have to do something about it’ and you just go out there and do it and see what happens,” said Richard Rotteveel, head of special projects for Shadow Lines Transportation Group.

It will be displayed on Saturday, Sept. 10 at the Langley Good Times Cruise-In for public tours and public education on how it is supposed to help relieve the issue of homelessness. “The major challenges have been for people to understand that it is a temporary solution,” said Rotteveel. “The groups that operate the units are happy with it and it definitely has filled the needs required for overflow.” The project was originally dreamed up by Rob Reid, owner of Shadow Lines Transportation Group, and has cost him over $100,000 to bring to life. With top capacity holding 240 shelter beds per month, Reid believes it will bring much needed relief to shelters and homeless people in Metro Vancouver. Within each shelter unit are eight heated rooms, equipped with upper and lower bunks, LED lighting, and fire-retardant pillows and mattresses. The unit also

includes a washroom with handicap accessibility, a diesel furnace, smoke and emergency alarms, and steel insulated doors. Each individual room has space for one person and their cart or two people with no carts when maximum capacity is needed. “We’re working on some projects with it,” Rotteveel said. “I’ve got a lot of interest for its use on the Island and there’s a group from Ontario coming out in August as well to take a look at it to get some ideas. So there’s a lot of interest in it. It’s got a lot of discussion going.” However not everyone is as enthusiastic about the project. Rotteveel says they have had problems clearing usage with local municipalities. “Problem-wise it is getting more of the municipalities to understand how to zone it properly and sort it out in their own minds how they want to zone it and

how they want to license it. That to me is a challenge, that they have been trying to decide ‘how do we deal with it.’” This became evident in Chilliwack where the THRS was used by the Salvation Army in January to keep homeless people out of the snow and cold at night. Rotteveel says the temporary shelter was working very well, until the Salvation Army was told they could no longer keep it. “No one is quite clear how it came about but they were told that they were not allowed to use it in that parking lot anymore. We were asked to remove it, much to their disappointment and to our disappointment, but these things happen,” he said. Rotteveel hopes that attending events such as the Cruise-In will help educate the public and local governments about their initiative.

he number of cars lining the streets at Cruise-In is nothing in comparison to the number of people about, and according to the Downtown Langley Merchants Association, this is good news for business. Although support from the business community has not always been on Cruise-In’s side, Teri James, executive director of the Downtown Langley Merchants Association, says this is rapidly changing. “There was a time in the not too distant past, where there was a misconception that the CruiseIn was run by people who got paid and that tended to change everything because the road closures were a little iffy and things like that,” James said. “So the DLMA specifically made it their mission a few years back to educate the businesses and community that this was run strictly by volunteers and that all the money went to charity. And

suddenly the road closures weren’t as large an impact, it was more of an ‘oh wow that’s really awesome’ than the opposite.” James says that most businesses have learned to embrace Cruise-In and use the massive crowds to their advantage, especially in the restaurant and retail sectors. “I would dare say that the Cruise-In brings in more people in one day than any other promotion, event or marketing strategy combined,” she said. “Sometimes there’s some businesses out there that think outside the box and that make the most out of the day and have Cruise-In specials.” Beyond the economic benefit, there is also a camaraderie that builds from hosting such a large community event. “It’s also an event that pulls the business community together as well. Everyone’s so into doing their own thing and running their own business that it takes an event like this to make everybody realize that they have neighbours, and that there is an

opportunity to come outside of their stores and enjoy the day. And it’s just because they’re busy and they’re trying to make a living,” she said. However, James admits there are some businesses that feel negative impacts from such crowds. She points to places such as walk-in barbers that may not do as well during Cruise-In as on regular business days. Nonetheless, the DLMA says it is a strong supporter of Cruise-In and is once again supplementing the cost of festive painting of windows for downtown businesses. By the end of July there were already 45 businesses signed up, more than in any other year in the past. “It’s going to be really cool downtown,” she said. “The businesses are really on board this year. [The 45 businesses signed up] are more than what we’ve ever had, by far. That’s more than double what we’ve ever had. It’s another testament to the fact that the businesses appreciate the fact that it’s back.”

ince its inception in 1997, Cruise-In has been invaluable to many local charities. All three of the official charities Cruise-In is supporting this year, The Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, Langley Stroke Recovery and Valley Therapeutic Equestrian Association, have expressed their gratitude for all of the hard work that goes in to making such an event. At the end of the day it is far more than a flashy car show − it is about fundraising to benefit the local community. Langley Good Times President Riccardo Sestito estimates that over $1 million has been raised for local charities since Cruise-In began. Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Based solely on volunteers, the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary is an integral part of the Langley Memorial Hospital. As one of the major sources of funding for the hospital, the donations they raise are used to directly

support patients through the purchasing of new hospital equipment and other volunteer duties. Places such as the hospital gift shop, lotto booth, vendor tables and Penny Pincher Thrift Shop on 56 Avenue are all run by auxiliary volunteers. “One hundred per cent of money donated to us from Cruise-In will be put directly back into the hospital,” said Diane Thornton, president of the Langley Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. “We have no paid staff so we can direct our funding into much needed equipment for the hospital.” They majority of donations go into the purchasing of new hospital equipment and supporting volunteer programs. The Auxiliary usually does two pledge drives per year in June and December where they will purchase equipment based on a wish list provided by the hospital. In years past this has included buying new beds for some of the wards and furnishing the pediatric ward when it was newly-opened two years ago.

With so many needs in the hospital, the work the Auxiliary does benefits a diverse group of people in the community ranging from infants to seniors. “Every penny goes into this,” Thornton said. “Everything donated to us is a direct benefit to the community.” The Auxiliary also runs volunteer programs in areas including residential care, resident comforts, acute care, patient comforts, pastoral care, meet and greets and youth volunteering. They usually get most of its funding through the Penny Pincher Thrift Shop, donations in memory of loved ones, bequests from estates, grants and cash donations, so extra support from the Cruise-In gives them even more means to help the hospital. “We were very pleased to hear they would be back again. It is a great community event,” Thornton said. “Thank you to Cruise-In for choosing us. We are very grateful. Working with the Cruise-In in the continued on next page

Langley Stroke Recovery The Langley Good Times Cruise-In is the main supporter of Langley Stroke Recovery, and without them the organization would not be able to stay afloat, says Marilyn Piticco, coordinator of Langley Stoke Recovery. “They love our program and the reason we have been able to be there is because of them,” she said. “We just would not have been able to do it without them.” A branch of the Stroke Recovery Association of BC, Langley Stroke Recovery provides support and services for stroke survivors to integrate back into normalized life. Focusing on improving areas of mobility, speech and communication, mental stimulation and counseling, the organization truly adheres to their slogan, ‘there is hope after stroke.’ “Recovery from stroke does happen,” Piticco said. “They can get their speech back, moving their arm again can happen, and walking with a walker instead of sitting in a wheelchair can happen.” Because of past support from the Cruise-In, Langley Stroke Recovery has been able to expand their programs to offer better rehabilitation resources for stroke survivors.

She was able to create a new website, extend the time of speech therapy sessions, hire counsellors and create resource office hours at the Walnut Grove Community Centre, where they are located. “Because of having their funding for so long, the continuity has allowed me to plan and dream and make the organization what it should be,” Piticco said. However, because Cruise-In was cancelled last year, she had to decrease operations back to only two days a week. Piticco says if Cruise-In had been cancelled again this year, Langley Stroke Recovery would have been put in jeopardy. “If this one hadn’t come up we would not have been able to continue, I’m not sure what we would have done, but it would have been drastic,” she said. “They are our main supporter and the reason we are able to offer the programs we have.” Piticco attributes Cruise-In as the lifeline that keeps Langley Stroke Recovery alive. “I was always praying that someone would come along and do a big fundraiser for us, and we were so lucky to be chosen by the Cruise-In over the years,” she said. Providing assistance for special needs children and adults, VTEA offers therapeutic horseback riding to boost physical, mental and emotional well being. Siobhan McKenzie, office coordinator at VTEA explains: “It’s practicing hippotherapy which utilizes a horse for physical exercise. For example, this is great for someone confined to a wheelchair who does not have use of their legs. When they’re on a horse, the horse’s movement actually stimulates the exact same movement as a human walking. It helps develop muscle tone, upper strength and body core strength that would not be developed because they are confined to a chair. It really develops a lot of

muscles that wouldn’t be used otherwise. That’s the physical part. But it also builds confidence and provides a sense of freedom.” With 80 to 100 clients in their programs each year, donations to VTEA go directly to benefit the riders. “The money goes wherever it is most needed,” McKenzie said. VTEA primarily runs private classes, where the program is individually tailored to the specific rider. However they also offer some group classes for returning clients who are more experienced riders. “We have 10 acres of trails, they’re beautiful. They’re sensory trails, and especially for a kid with autism this is huge,” Mckenzie said. “There’s lots to capture their eyes and stimulate their imaginations.” McKenzie says that it’s supporters like the Cruise-In that keep their programs going. “We run month to month, and being a non-profit we definitely struggle,” she said. “Every penny counts. That’s the message being sent by the Langley RCMP, in response to the outpouring of street racing and burnouts that occurred on Cruise-In weekend in 2009. “I think residents in Langley can anticipate seeing a significant increase in the number of visible police resources on the Friday evening prior to the Cruise-In,” said Supt. Derek Cooke, head of the Langley RCMP detachment. Along with officers from the Langley detachment, members of the Fraser Valley Integrated Road Safety Unit, bike patrollers, foot patrollers and possibly neighbouring detachments will all be used. Additional street closures are also being considered along with highly visible police road checks. The goal is to keep the Cruise-In a fun and safe event for families to enjoy for years to come. The RCMP hope that a stronger presence will deter people from driving their hot rods dangerously. “From the perspective of the police, the biggest single change

This will also be the first Cruise-In Lynda attends without her husband — something she is very nervous about. “Bob passed away on January 7, it was a Thursday I think, and the very next day in the Langley newspaper it was announced that Cruise-In was cancelled for 2010. And my very first reaction was ‘that’s Bob.’ Bob said ‘if I can’t go to the Cruise-In nobody’s going to it,’” Lynda said. Cruise-In also happens to fall on their wedding anniversary, Sept. 10. “I’m a little nervous about that day period. But I’ve got to go. I can’t not go, it wouldn’t be right,” she said. “The Cruise-In was the highlight of our year. And that’s how we celebrated, because I’m as much of a car guy as he was.” So far, returning back to the car world has been difficult. “We would do everything together. I was one of the gals that was always there. It’s been a bit of a shock. I’m hoping having the car will get me back into that whole social scene,” Lynda said. “At first it was hard to even go to shows because it’s mainly guys. Girls are good at coming up and giving you a big hug but guys don’t know what to say, so they just avoid you. But this is the second season of car shows so people are getting used to seeing me by myself. And they know my brothers. I don’t feel so much like a circus freak anymore.”

She is very excited to finally be able to show it off. “I can’t believe it’s mine,” she said. “It’s been a long process and I am looking forward to being able to sit in the driver’s seat and drive it around.” Bob wanted his hotrod to be more than just your average car, and that’s what it has become. “This was his dream, and now it’s come true,” Lynda said.

Deborah Kulchiski, executive director of Tourism Langley, says that any large event in the City or Township is likely to boost local tourism. “Any type of event really has a twofold opportunity for the role that we play in marketing our community,” she said. “We recognize that local residents and people from within our region and from our province are going to travel here to come to Cruise-In day.” Kulchiski says this is the perfect opportunity for people lured to Langley by the car show to explore the area and find out what the community is all about. “People may build their vacation plans around [Cruise-In] and stay in our community and in our region. But we also have the opportunity to encourage people to stay in Langley longer than they may have originally planned,” she said. By promoting some of the tourist spots in Langley, Kulchiski believes that traffic from Cruise-In can benefit the entire community.

Kulchiski says that festivals and events hold a significant impact on the community and on local businesses. Something as large and distinctive as Cruise-In gives a certain brand to Langley and helps to establish it as an enticing place to visit. “Events such as Cruise-In strengthen communities, because it is a unique activity,” she said. “It helps us build awareness to Langley.” Beyond attracting foreign visitors, Kulchiski believes the Cruise-In is very positive for local residents as well. “It also ultimately is not just an economic benefit, but events also contribute to the quality of life for residents,” she said. he newest director of Cruise-In this year, Eric Taylor, claims he woke up one day and found himself in the role. “I didn’t have any choice,” he said. “Lori Watts emailed me one day and told me I was in.” Taylor has been involved with Cruise-In for several years organizing the marketplace, and believes it is the best event in Langley. “The Cruise-In is my favourite event of the year,” he said. “The first thing I do in January when I get my new calendar is mark off Cruise-In weekend.” He even marked his calendar with Cruise-In last year too, despite the show being cancelled, and made a point to have his own hotrod weekend. The father of two has been living in the Langley/Cloverdale area for most of the last 37 years, and has spent 28 years in the steel industry. He is the proud owner of Valley Cut Steel in Port Kells, and says he is lucky to have a job with flexible hours to help accommodate the work required for Cruise-In. Taylor has always had an interest in cars and believes much of that influence came from his own father who was a mechanic. “With friends we would always try to name the cars (year, make

f you invite tens of thousands of people to your party, you’d better be able to entertain them and look after them when they arrive. The Langley Good Times Cruise-in Directors are all volunteers and unlike some other major car shows, there are no promoters or event planners that get a percentage of the proceeds. But the Directors realized early on that six or seven people could not handle a show of this size by themselves and the call went out for volunteers. People were needed to man barricades, register entries, prepare food, sell souvenirs and park cars. This year there will be 160 volunteers, many of them coming back year after year to support the Cruise-in and make it work and make it look easy. Fred Moncton has been working on the parking crew since 2003 and is currently the Parking Coordinator for the event. Fred is a lifelong Langley resident and the owner of Moncton and Co. Who better to put in charge of parking than someone who grew up knowing all the side streets and back alleys? When asked how he got involved as a volunteer Fred smiles. “I bought my classic car, a 1967 F-85 Cutlass convertible from Harold Wellenbrink in 2003. Harold was in charge of parking the cars at that time. I asked him if I could park my car in front of my business on Douglas Crescent on Cruise-in day. He said sure if I came early enough and seeing how I was coming early I could help park cars.” Fred has 21 volunteers returning to the parking crew this year. “We have an experienced group of very loyal guys who take the job seriously. We have to reach a compromise to please both the show entrants and the general public that is delayed trying to move around the city.” “I tell my crew that they have to keep cool and not create problems. If a car owner starts to give them a bad time, I tell them to smile and tell the guy how great his car looks, that usually cools the situation. At 6 a.m. we are the usually the first face to face meeting they have with the Cruise-in or Langley and we have to make a good impression.” Fred noted that the first few years the cars were brought in from various entry points and it led to confusion and delay as the number of entries grew. “We would see both the drivers and the cars boiling over as they had to sit and wait. We toured the City and came up with a plan to stage all the cars at Kwantlen college and bring them in one entry point at Fraser and 204th. Harold Wellenbrink, Harold Swift and Larry Watson are Traffic Control persons and they manage three teams stationed in the downtown core with Creighton Wilson as the Show Access Control. carts and hand held radios and the cars are moved systematically to designated areas without any delay or confusion.” “We are proud to say that car shows from the Okanagan and other lower Mainland locations have asked us if our crews will come and manage the parking at their events. One year two gentlemen from England who are paid to stage a large car show there spent a long time with me to get some insight on how we parked so many cars in so little time.” “We do a lot of pre-planning and we listen to feedback from the entrants if there is some way to make it better. We are always conscious of safety and we like to leave more room between cars than other shows because we know there are strollers and belt buckles than do damage to expensive paint. The car owners like the extra space.” “We have no problems getting volunteers but we strive for quality volunteers, the people who are prepared to work and understand we are dealing with rare and high priced cars.” Fred estimates he puts in about 300 volunteer hours in his position and this includes pre-event meetings and a post event wind-up and critique to see if they can do better next year. “I’ve lived in Langley all my life, swept floors for Charter Electric downtown and went to the movies on the main street on Saturdays, so I am glad that we can keep bringing people to the downtown area and I get a chance to give back.” If you want a different perspective of the Cruise-in, come down to the corner of 204th and Fraser Highway at 6 AM on Sept. 10th and enjoy the gleaming chrome and the heavy metal thunder as it goes by, and throughout the day, say thanks to the volunteers in the orange vests, they make it all work.

efore Riccardo Sestito took on the role as president of the Langley Good Times Cruise-In, he wore several different hats. He first jumped on board as the risk manager, a position he was recruited for by a past Cruise-In president. “It was my first year attending the event and I saw nothing but liability nightmares in terms of how it was laid out,” he said. Shortly afterwards, his money management skills landed him the position as treasurer. “I became known as ‘Mr. No Fun,’ he said, chuckling at the memory. “The other directors would pass an idea and I’d have to say no, it won’t work money-wise or liability-wise.” Perhaps his most unusual title has been ‘crapper jack,’ a name he rightfully earned being in charge of setting up the toilets, a task he still does today.

“It’s a dirty job but somebody has to do it,” he laughed. “Even the president.” It wasn’t long before the father of three became the Cruise-In’s vice-president, a title he held for five years before becoming president. “It’s been a lot of fun being a part of the Cruise-In board of directors,” he said. “I think it’s the goofing around we do. Other directors in the past will say the same thing, we’re like a family. It doesn’t matter how long the meetings are, we have a sense of humour about the whole thing.” Every year Sestito sees the Cruise-In as a challenge to raise more and more money for the local charities. “It’s what the event is all about,” he said, also sure to credit the dedicated team of volunteers who come back year after year to give their time and energy to the event. “There are many who have been with us since day one,” he said. “Without them there is no way we could pull it off.”

All of the directors, including Sestito, are also volunteers who do not get paid for their time, which in many cases equates to a full-time job. “The day of the show is pretty tough. There’s so much worrying and running around that you can’t help but ask why we doing this? But after everything is done and over I always say, ‘okay, I can do this another year.’ “ But this may just be Sestito’s last as president. “This year may be my last year as president, I would like to focus on my three girls and get them more involved in building hot rods with me,” he said. “I want to make sure that when I do leave that anyone taking over the position, or come aboard are going to have the same vision that all of the past presidents have had for the Cruise-In.” Taking a break would also give him more time to dedicate to his own classic cars. “I’ve always enjoyed cars and would like to put more time into it if I could,” said

Sestito, who is also in the process of building a 1960s-70s diner in the upstairs of his newly-completed shop. He has even gotten his wife involved in the hobby, with his recent purchase of a 1960 Thunderbird convertible for her. “I am in the process of restoring it slowly, do a bit of work during the winter months and she drives it during the summer, she just loves it,” he said. Sestito bought his first classic car back when he was 16, using every last dime of the money he saved from his paper route. Unable to afford the insurance, he kept the car in his garage. “My dad said I was crazy, that it was an old junker but it was untouched, a virgin car. I’m its third owner,” he stated proudly. Perhaps it was fate which brought Sestito in contact with the car’s first owner while attending the Cruise-In during his first year attending the event. “This man came up to me and said ‘that’s

– volunteering a labour of love my car,’ ‘’ said Sestito. “I had repainted it and fixed it up but he just knew by the way it stood.” It turned out the man was indeed correct. As a boy growing up in a sleepy suburb of Toronto, Mitch Desrochers developed a strong interest in custom cars. Every afternoon he and a few friends would ride their bikes past a custom car clubhouse, which was always alive with activity. “There would be lots of men outside working on their cars and we’d stop and watch,” he recalled. “Eventually they asked us if we’d like to come and look at some of the cars. From then on, I was hooked.” As a director on the Cruise-In board, Desrochers is thrilled with the excuse it gives him to live and breathe classic cars. Not that he needs one. The Surrey resident is the proud owner of his own classic beauty, a 1968 gold Chrysler 300, which he loves to polish and keep in tip top condition. Since he first found out about the Cruise-In back in 2001, the family man hasn’t missed a single show. “I just think it’s great to see that many vehicles in one place,” he said. “That and the fact that we’re all volunteers raising money for local charities. There just isn’t anything out there like this.”

Before becoming a director, Desrochers took photos of classic cars at the event for his employer, putting him on a first-name basis with many of the directors. He then helped as one of the directors on the sponsorship committee, a role he has since taken over. “I am involved as a director because I like to give back. I feel fortunate to be able to help people who need it. It just seems the right thing to do,” he said. Although the past month has felt like he’s been working two full-time jobs, he admits he’s having the time of his life. “We have fun and really enjoy each other’s company. We all get along very well,” he said. Lori Watts is living proof you don’t have to be crazy about cars to be a big fan of the Cruise-In. For the Langley resident, the camaraderie between the directors, the enjoyment of the participants and the support the event gives to local charities are all aspects which bring her back year after year as a member of the Cruise-In board of directors. “I love that this is an event that interests all ages from kids to seniors, and it also gives me a chance to give back to my community and the opportunity to raise money for our local charities,” she said. Having been on the board as a director since its incep-

tion in 1997, Watts has watched the Cruise-In expand over the years from its humble beginnings into a thriving community event that attracts car buffs from all over North America. What many people aren’t aware of about the Cruise-In is that it started with a simple homework assignment completed by Watts. “I had just finished a marketing course at BCIT and as a final assignment we had to come up with an idea for a free public event,” she said. For Watts, a classic car show immediately sprung to mind. At the time, she owned a gift shop in downtown Langley and was a member of the Downtown Langley Merchants Association. During one of the regular meetings, a fellow member by the name of Helen Stoddart suggested a classic car show in downtown Langley. Having already done the leg work for her school assignment, the two worked together to bring the event to life. Through her involvement with the Cruise-In over the years, Watts has met some amazing volunteers, many of whom she’s made long-lasting friendships with. It’s also provided her with the opportunity to meet with volunteers from the various charities the Cruise-In has

for the cruise-in directors supported, and find out what they’re doing for the community. “You just don’t know what people are doing to help others less fortunate until you ask, and it makes it all worthwhile when you find out,” said Watts. Her favourite part of the Cruise-In happens every year without fail on the Saturday, the day of the big ‘Show and Shine.’ “The morning starts for us at about 4 a.m. It’s always cold and misty and there are people scurrying back and forth setting up barricades and tents. Before you realize it the sun starts to rise and the fog starts to lift, as you hear the first rumble of the cars as they slowly parade downtown. The parking crew are madly waving their arms directing the cars to their parking spots,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how busy we are, we always stop what we are doing and take in this moment. It’s what makes all the hundreds of hours of planning worth it.” Keith Wilson is a self-confessed “car nut” who has been an active part of the Langley Good Times Cruise-In for many years. He keeps very busy with his cars, all 300 of them. They can be spotted in every nook and cranny of his Cloverdale home. His model cars may not be the type of cars on display at the Cruise-In, but they are just as special to him. “I’ve loved them ever since I was a kid,” he said. “I’ve got all different sizes of cars, trucks and motorcycles. I don’t do any airplanes or boats, I stick with automotive, mostly classic cars. They are everywhere in my house.” His hobby has even won him several awards. He has entered contests from Kelowna to the U.S. His wife doesn’t seem to mind if he spends several hours a day entranced as he pieces miniature car parts together. Wilson has been a director for the past six years, after initially working with Cruise-In as a volunteer. He got involved, not only because he loves cars, but also because he loves the fact that Cruise-In raises money for worthy local charities. Wilson, a retired sales rep, is hoping that this year’s Cruise-In will set new records in the amount of money it raises for charities. But he also loves the overall show. “When you see 400 classic cars in one lot, it takes you back 40 years,” he said. Cruise-In director Dick Hooper may not know a whole lot about cars, but he is a wealth of knowledge when it comes the community of Langley. The longtime local resident and retired electrical contractor is a member of the Sunrise Rotary Club and the Rotary World Help Network.

“I’m a very busy man,’’ he laughed. For Hooper, the philanthropic activities that he participates in are his passion. “I find it enjoyable to give back to the community,” he said. “It has always been good to me. Raising money for the community for different charities just gives you a good feeling to know you are doing something worthwhile.” Beyond the charity beneficiaries, he also believes CruiseIn has a positive impact on the Langley community as a whole. “As a retired business person, I also recognize the great contribution an event of this magnitude has on the local economy. Thousands of people, some from around the world, visit Langley and discover it truly is the place to be,” he said. The grandfather of two has been actively involved with the Cruise-In since it first planted its roots in Langley City back in 1997, taking only two years off in between to rest. “It’s hard work, but it’s even harder to stay away,” he laughed. The Cruise-In has also provided him with a wonderful opportunity to bond with his granddaughter. “She’s very interested in cars,” he said. “She has worked at the Rotary booth for several years. It’s great to have her there.” Although he’s a fan of viewing the classic cars, you won’t see him driving one anytime soon. “I like to admire cars but in terms of working on them, no. I just like something I can get in and drive any day in. I’m just fine with my mini-van,” he said. But with that said, Hooper does admit that his favorite car is a 1964 Ford Fairlane sport coupe. “I owned one new back in the day, and I wish I had never got rid of it,” he said. Audrey Stebanuk along with husband Gord have been Langley residents and business people for over 35 years. The Stebanuks enjoy their car hobby for the camaraderie. “We’ve won lots and lots of awards,” Audrey admitted, “but the wonderful people that have become and remain life long friends through the car hobby is cherished just a little more. “It’s nice to know when you do a car up that it’s recognized, but makes me equally happy to see somebody else receive an award for their hard work.” Stebanuk says that those who take on this hobby for life become part of a unique community. “It’s a little world with a congregation all its own. Wherever you go, you run into someone you know and that’s through having the cars. We all have the same hobby and an interest in resurrecting these old pieces of iron. “It’s a hobby and through it, you meet some phenomenal

people.” The Stebanuks are also the former producers of the Abbotsford Collectors Car Show & Auction and have been involved with the Langley Cruise-In for 10 years. As for their private collection, some of the vehicles have been with the Stebanuks for some time. “Some are just the cars we had growing up and, of course, we’ve always liked cars,” Audrey said. Their gated Langley property hosts a setting steeped in car collector dreams. Countless show-quality vehicles, countless more in various stages of restoration, and a strong 1950s theme, which embraces a general store, canteen and service station. And while she may be a driver of the vintage collection, it’s Gord who gets full credit for putting the mechanicals together. “He takes the cars right down to nothing and starts with the body. Every nut, screw and grommet comes out of that vehicle and is redone, either replaced with new stock or reconditioned.” Her favourite is a black 1959 Bonneville convertible. “I’m a convertible person, I love them. But I also love the muscle cars we have, the 440s and the Hemis,” she said. She said the Bonneville she owns was built the first year of the wide track. “It’s wider than the average vehicle, and it’s long. You kind of have to build your garage around that car,” she laughed. As for Gord’s favourite, she suspects it’s the Hemi car he rebuilt. Finding the right part for a specific vehicle has always been a challenge, admits Audrey. “They’re all fairly challenging,” she said. “But there are some great outlets and within the network of car collectors someone, somewhere is always willing to point you in the right direction.” When she’s not busy with her seven children, 17 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren, Audrey does various charity work, including supporting the Centre for Child Development and Langley Flight Museum. And when asked if she’s ever spent any time broken down on the road with the vintage collection, she replies: “No. When (Gord) rebuilds them, they run pretty good.” “Langley is a community that is bursting with car enthusiasts. We enjoy being with people, enjoy the challenge,” she said, endorsing Langley as a pit stop for some of the best car hobbyists in the world. “I think Langley is the car capital of B.C.” Come September, the Stebanuks will once again be part of the action at the Cruise-In, Audrey on Registration and Gord on Staging.

fter months of planning and anticipation, the day of the show finally arrives. Hundreds of hours of meetings have been held with Directors and volunteers. Deliberations with the City have fine tuned the logistics of the event and discussions with the RCMP have satisfied the traffic and security concerns. All the promotion has been done, the t-shirts and souvenirs are on display and the organizers are waiting for the only two things they can’t predict, the crowd and the weather. As with any outdoor festival, fair or display, the weather plays a major role in the success of the event. Historically, the first two week-ends of September in the Fraser Valley are beautiful autumn days. The original organizers chose this end of the summer, holidays are over weekend as the dates for The Langley Good Times Cruise-in. The first events exceeded everyone’s expectations. The cars kept coming, the crowds kept getting larger and the rave reviews from visitors and exhibitors spread quickly. Langley City in September was the ‘Place To Be.’ In 1999, Dennis Gage, the host of the TV show My Classic Car, was invited to Langley. His show is watched all over North America as he visits car shows or amazing garages or hot rod shops. Dennis and his film crew spent the day in Langley, touring, signing autographs and shaking his head in amazement. When the Langley segment of the show aired he told his audience he had seen many one-of-a-kind vehicles and foreign cars he had never seen before. He declared the Good Times Cruise-in as “one of the top ten car shows in North America.” The year 2000 was ‘The year of the Monsoon.’ It started raining during the night and as the cars were gathering at five in the morning, the locals were convincing the visitors that the rain would stop by sun up. At eight they were being told it would stop by ten. At ten they were promised it would end by noon, and at two, when everyone was soaked through, they weren’t listening any more. By four-thirty as the Mayor took to the stage to hand out the awards, the rain stopped and the sun poked through. But most of the crowd had hung in and
