Wish-full thinking

Catalogue of '70s Christmas Memories One year, in the mid-’70s, I had my heart set on a Baby Thumbelina doll. Seriously, it was all I thought about in the months leading up to Christmas. She represented the latest in baby doll technology, with tiny arms that reached up, she squirmed and rolled over. Just like a real baby!

T

At least, that’s what she did on TV.

o get in or out of Port Hardy in the 1970s, you had a few options.

You could fly PWA to such far-flung destinations as Comox, or you could take the North Island Princess — a ferry laughingly dubbed the ‘Turtle Princess’ by locals — for a three-hour trip down about 35 miles of Vancouver Island coastline. If you wanted to drive, you waited until the logging road was clear of commercial trucks, which meant traveling on evenings and weekends. Needless to say, we didn’t get out much when we were kids.

I still recall unwrapping her in a frenzy that Christmas morning. Oh, the indescribable thrill of seeing that little pink-cheeked face, that rooted blond hair, those painted-on blue eyes gazing up at me. In went the fresh batteries, on went the switch, and . . . she just kind of laid there — no squirming, no rolling, no nothing. So, we opened her up and flipped the batteries. No doubt, that was the problem. Or not.

The concept of Christmas shopping at a mall was so far-fetched that it didn’t even register as a possibility.

A little shake, a few pats on the bottom.

So when the Sears Christmas Wish Book arrived in the mail each fall — as thick as a city phone book — trust me, it was a very big deal.

And since all that 1970s space-age technology required plenty of gears and hard plastic, there wasn’t much to cuddle under that fuzzy yellow sleeper, so there really wasn’t a whole lot of point in keeping her. Back into the package she went, along with a little piece of my six-yearold heart and the promise that another, working version would arrive before I knew it.

I remember fighting with my brother for first crack at it. Nearly three years older and twice my size, I doubt he considered it much of a fight. And so, once he’d been through it, marked it up for mom and dad and forgotten all about it, it was finally my turn to creep away and devour it, page by page. Forget toques and parkas, boots and pyjamas — everything I came to see was in one glorious section. In those days, I was pretty sure the Christmas Wish Book toy section was as close to Nirvana as I was ever going to come — filled with pages and pages of dolls and stuffed animals that I had no doubt would look magnificent propped on my pink comforter, beneath my Shaun Cassidy posters. Mass production not having quite reached the level of, well, mass, that it enjoys today, you had be sure to get your order in early to avoid disappointment. If they were sold out of exactly what you wanted, instead of sending a heartless ‘out of stock’ notice, they’d package up something that whoever was working in the warehouse that day considered comparable — and there was never any telling how that would turn out.

Every one of my friends had at least one doll from the collection. A lucky few had them lined up like a mini-cotillion on their bedroom shelves.

Think about that as you blast your way through another round of World of Warcraft against some kid you’ve never met, who lives on another continent.

The closest thing an Internet search turns up is a Bradley doll — but I’m fairly sure that’s not it. (Seriously, this is killing me, and nobody in the office has any idea what I’m talking about — so please call or write if you know the answer.) Christmases came and went, one bringing an Easy Bake Oven with its light bulb cooker that, while certainly hot enough to burn several layers of skin off my fingers, never quite managed to solidify the batter at the centre of the tiny round cake pans. Then there was the Fisher Price family with their bizarre, globe-shaped heads and round, wooden peg bodies. They came complete with house, car and equally bizarrelooking dog.

For my brother, it was all about destruction — pellet guns and pop guns, hot wheels and skate boards — if he couldn’t break something with it or do some damage to himself, he wasn’t interested. I remember he got a rock polisher one year. Filled with sand, rocks and water, it would grind obnoxiously away in the basement for weeks on end. I’m not sure if it was simple mischance or a case of buyer’s remorse that found it crashing to the floor one day in mid-polish, never to be heard from again.

It’s been nearly four decades and I’m still waiting on that replacement doll (I’m just sayin’, mom). Then there was the doll that I got to keep for years, and treasure in that “look, but don’t touch” way that every little girl loves. I distinctly remember her being called a Chantilly Doll (though Google disagrees). She came with a bottle of perfume and a giant hoop skirt and matching hat over long, silky hair, with large dark eyes, tiny pink lips and rosy cheeks painted on a nylon face.

COME TRUE FOR

by a single dial. Should that fail to be challenging enough, you could always speed up the dot and/or shorten the paddles.

And, of course, over the years, there was a whole legion of Barbie dolls and everything that entailed.

Nothing.

Help makeholiday

Of course, ‘hands-off’ just wasn’t an option and by the time I was done ‘fixing’ her eye makeup, she looked like a southern belle zombie.

But of course, Christmas wasn’t all about the presents. As a family, we had no shortage of board games — from Monopoly to Clue to Star Wars — to keep us connected. That is, until the advent of Pong changed everything. Kids, try to imagine, if you will, the hours of sheer delight spent watching a glowing dot bounce back and forth across a dark screen, while trying to block it with with a “paddle” of light controlled

We paved the way for you. You’re welcome. And then, of course, there’s the holiday meal. When it comes to Christmas dinner today, turducken (boneless duck and chicken stuffed inside a turkey) is apparently all the rage for anyone unlucky enough not to own a giant deep-fryer. But in the '70s, the only foul on the table besides the roasted turkey was my parents’ bottle of Baby Duck. Whether it’s nostalgia or lack of imagination, I still prefer a very traditional turkey dinner — one with all the old standby trimmings — that inevitably leads to that other timeless Christmas tradition, the groaning and unbuttoning of pants. And of course, in the 1970s, like today, it wasn’t Christmas until the Grinch, Frosty and Charlie Brown had all made an appearance on the old RCA. In 1978 and for a couple of years afterward, Rich Little’s A Christmas Carol was must-see TV every December. Channeling everyone from Edith Bunker to Richard Nixon and Hollywood Squares’ Paul Lynde, Little’s topical humour wouldn’t make much sense today, but you can still find the whole thing on YouTube, if you’re so inclined. Ah, yes, the Internet. Now, there’s something the '70s didn’t have. But without megastore.com to turn to, for sheer anticipation — the whole not knowing if that longdesired item would arrive in the mail in time for eager fingers on Christmas morning — you really couldn’t beat the Sears Christmas Wish Book. The Internet may like to think that it invented holiday shopping at home in your pjs, but we children of the '70s know better.

Merry Christmas. Brenda Anderson, Langley Times brenda@langleytimes.com

Memories, Hopes and Expectations

I

’m sitting down with a glass of egg nog and two tasty butter tarts from my daughter’s kitchen, great accessories to have for writing a Christmas story. The big day is drawing close now and all of us are a bundle of memories, hopes and expectations. Regardless of what our faith is, whether we celebrate Christmas or not, this time of year is a benchmark, a milestone that we use to measure our time here.

crept into our dreams. If I was the first one awake, I would check out the window, but no Christmas snow, just green grass. I would go quietly down the stairs and hear my Mom humming before I’d come into the room. She would have the wood stove fired up and coffee starting to bubble into the glass bulb on top of the coffee pot. We both say Merry Christmas and she puts a finger to her mouth telling me to be quiet for awhile yet.

There is a line from a Christmas song that stirs up some memories, “I’m drivin home for Christmas, to get my feet on holy ground.” I like that. Everyone wishes to be home for Christmas or have all the family home with them. But as families extend and add new twigs and branches onto the family tree, it becomes difficult to have everyone gather in one spot, but when they do and they’re together, warts and all, it surely seems like holy ground.

The tree lights are on, the only light in the living room, and reveal the shadows of large packages that weren’t under there when we went to bed. Our stockings are full. They are not fancy craft fair stockings with our names sequined on them, just big grey work socks with our names written on paper attached by big silver safety pins.

In my Christmas file I have a black and white photograph imprinted Dec.63 on the bottom. My three brothers and I are sitting on the living room floor and my older brother, home on leave from the air force, has a set of dice and is showing us how to shoot craps. This is certainly not a Christmas tradition my Mom wants to start in a good Christian home and even though no money is changing hands, the guilty look on our faces reveals that we are being naughty, not nice. Christmas Eve there was very little under the tree and the anticipation climbed into bed with us and

I can’t touch mine until everyone is up but I can make out a large mandarin orange stuffed in the toe. I’m pretty sure there will also be some hard ribbon candy, with wool and sock lint stuck to it, some chocolates, socks and underwear, and maybe some new mittens. We’ll get to open them first, then breakfast before presents. The cast iron frying pan is brimming with scrambled eggs, maybe a pot of porridge or Cream of Wheat is brewing as well. It only sounds and smells like this Christmas morning. Finally, I get the go ahead to wake up the others. The quiet time is over!

T

he memories come to us from all directions at this time of year. They tumble out of envelopes with Christmas cards from old friends, the ones we were going to call last year when we got their card. Well, we’ll do it this year for sure. Memories are attached to each bauble we hang on the tree. The glued spool and pipe cleaner rocking horse from an ancient kinde garten class looks great beside the expensive Franklin Mint angel we got for that special anniversary. Our hopes are centered on this year’s Christmas. We hope we got the right gift, the right size, the right color. We hope they like it. We hope we have enough money and enough food. Some may be hoping that a loved one may choose this Christmas to return home, hope they can start over. Others may be hoping the relative who makes the best desserts shows up and hope the one that complains too much doesn’t. We hope the weather is good and the roads are clear for traveling. We hope the power stays on and the rain holds off. We hope we don’t get the flu and, most of all, we hope everyone is happy. As we turn the corner on the last week our expectations are high. While we hope for good weather, we expect a little bit of snow, just for Christmas morning. We expect a family dinner somewhere. We expect the turkey will brown perfectly, the glaze on the ham will be just right. The guests expect there will be no lumps in the

mashed potatoes or the gravy and they expect at least two choices of pie. We expect our family and guests will be on their best behavior. We expect tempers will remain calm, children will be polite and teenagers will take off their baseball caps. We expect the best knowing that while we can choose our friends, we are stuck with our relatives and yet, it is their individualism that adds the spices and sauces to our family dinners. It is the most wonderful time of the year shared with relatives that will either annoy you or entertain you. It has been said that two types of people show up at a family dinner, those who help with the dishes and those who talk about their operations. But every visit is a bundle of memories waiting to be unwrapped. Then there are are the ghosts of Christmas past, the family members that won’t be making the holy pilgrimage this year, but we can invite them anyway. Simply turn out all the lights but the candles and the Christmas tree, relax in the quiet of the evening, raise a glass in a toast and say, ‘Merry Christmas, welcome home.’ My family and I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas. When the day is over I trust this year’s Christmas memories will be in the bank, that your hopes were all realized and your day exceeded even your own expectations. May this be one of your best Christmas’ ever, and God bless us every one.

Turn the Pages of Time with these Blockbuster Books

T

here may have been no better time to live then in the 1950s and early 1960s. The world seemed simpler. Kids could leave their bikes in the driveway and parents would leave the front door unlocked. There were good jobs to be had and family seemed to be the focus of this seemingly innocent era. But out of such gentle times came some pretty complicated and fascinating books. Here is a list of the books that topped the bestseller’s list in the 1950s and ‘60s. Interestingly, each has been turned into blockbuster movies, including such cult classics as the Godfather and The Graduate. I’ve included some fabulous and timeless children’s books published in this era that make great reading gifts today.

1

To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee. First published in 1960, this unexpected love story serves up the raw human experiences and becomes an instant classic, winning Lee a Pulitzer the following year. She is best friends with Truman Capote and supports him with publishing the haunting thriller In Cold Blood.

2

The Outsiders by Susan E. Hinton was first published in 1967 about the gang life. Made into a play and hit movie, the story of friendship and violence is still applicable today.

3

One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest by Ken Kesey was written from his experience working at a psychiatric centre while putting himself through

wouldn’t want to explore a world made of chocolate or a giant peach.

school. This book helped change how mental illness is viewed by society.

6

Where the Wild Things Are by Maurice Sendak was recently made into an amazing movie, but the book is what really captures the imagination. Truly loved by adults and children alike, much like the world of Harry Potter of Narnia, you will want to read this and make sure children around you read it.

4

Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss (1960) – Theodor Seuss Geisler was asked to write a book using 220 chosen words that his publisher felt grade one students wouldn’t find boring. It was an attempt to solve a literacy problem back in 1954. Seuss came up with the Cat in the Hat. Next he was bet $50 to write a book only using 50 words. So came along Green Eggs and Ham.

5

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. Also author of James and the Giant Peach, Dahl’s imagination is a great gift for all of us. Who

7

A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess is a cult classic about a criminal who agrees to experimental government testing on him in order to reduce his jail sentence. The future him is something of a surprise.

8

OH CANADA: Dance of the Happy Shades by Alice Munro is the first look at this Canadian author’s brilliant prose. Munro’s writing is so layered and skillful, each book,

each short story commits you emotionally to her words.

9

Leonard Cohen emerges on the scene in 1956 with a book of poetry released in Montreal. He follows this up with a book and his first album Songs of Leonard Cohen, turning him into an international legend.

10

The Graduate by Charles Webb was published in 1963 after Webb finished university. The story of an older woman with a younger man was quickly made into a popular movie. The Godfather by Mario Puzo were first published in 1969. Based on an America-Italian mafia family, Puzo introduced the Corleone family to the world.

Here are a two recent bestsellers that are set in the 1960s

1

11/22/63 by Stephen King is number one on the current bestseller list and is about a time traveller who attempts to stop John F. Kennedy’s assassination which took place Nov. 11, 1963.

2

The Help by Kathryn Stackell is the smash hit story about African American maids taking care of white households in the Mississippi in the 1960s. Taking a good look at racial inequality, this smash hit was made into a fabulous movie now out in DVD this week.

Poinsettia Legend

We Print, Ship & More!

A young brother and sister had nothing to offer to baby Jesus at Christmas. They took the long way to church hoping to find something along the way. Desperately, they picked up some green leafy weeds and brought them into the church. The story differs after the children entered the church. In some accounts, the children lay the weeds at the feet of the baby Jesus, in other accounts before the Blessed Virgin Mary. In either case, the weed suddenly erupts into sparkling red blooms that overshadow all the baby Jesus’ other gifts, and the children rejoiced.

Poinsettia and Mexico

Naming The Poinsettia

The Aztecs called the plant cuetlaxochitl. They used the sap for medicinal purposes and the red leaves as die.

In 1826, Joel Roberts Poinsett noticed the poinsettia by the side of a road in Southern Mexico. Fascinated by the leaves, Poinsett brought it to South Carolina.

The poinsettia’s original scientific name Euphorbia Pulcherrima, or Very Beautiful. Painted leaf and Mexican fire plant until the plant was named Poinsetta Pulcherrima, or Poinsettia.

Christmas traditions:

Baby boomers versus baby consumers. Today we barely do half the baking my grandmother did, and most of the time our desserts are store bought. I have never even had a homemade fruitcake before (but, from what I hear perhaps this isn’t a bad thing). Every year my mom was allowed to choose one toy from the Christmas catalogue, and every year the one gift she always prayed for never came.

Christmas just isn’t the same as it used to be — or at least, that’s what my mother tells me.

G

rowing up in the 1950’s and 60’s in southern Vancouver, my mom was a part of the traditions and festivities that make up a retro Christmas. These are far different from the 1990’s Christmases of my childhood. “It was more about socializing and getting together with the community,” she said. Christmas for her began in October when my grandmother would start making her traditional batch of fruitcake for holiday dinners. “I think the only reason anyone even ate the cake was because it sat for two months soaking in all the rum,” my mom said.

“Every Christmas morning I would get up and race outside to see if my Christmas pony was sitting there under the back steps,” she said. “And every year I would be disappointed when one wasn’t there.” I, on the other hand, would circle every single “girl” toy in every Toys R Us, Sears, Zellers, The Bay and Canadian Tire flyer hoping that I would get them all. Christmas morning was a mad dash of opening dozens of presents, not just one. Afterwards I would phone all of the neighbourhood kids and we would compare the presents we received. We would then meet at the person’s house who seemed to have the “coolest” gift so we could all play with it. Opening gifts was the highlight of the entire holiday.

for decorating. Today we break a sweat from trying to stand the tree up straight, never mind sawing off branches and reattaching them. Many families don’t even use real trees in their home anymore. Instead of having Christmas dinner at the table with the whole family, the kids sat on the floor along the hallway and ate away from all the adults. That, too, never occurred at my childhood Christmas dinners. Boxing Day was open house day where neighbours, family and friends would drop by for leftover turkey sandwiches and socializing – Not a day of shopping madness. “The entire Christmas season was about visiting with friends and family,” my mom said. “It wasn’t full of consumerism like it is today.” This seems to be something missing in our holiday season today. Too often it becomes more about the “things” we receive than the people we celebrate with. Perhaps our modern Christmases need a bit more retro flare.

The Christmas tree in my mother’s home always had to be perfect. After cutting down a wild evergreen, my grandfather would take out the drill and rearrange all the branches to make them just right

Christmas Connection

Bring In Our Homes

The poinsettia became linked with Christmas in 16th century Mexico by Franciscan friars in Christmas celebrations. The star-shaped bracts symbolize the Star of Bethlehem, and the red color the blood of Christ.

Today, people around the world bring Poinsettias into their homes and churches at Christmas to remember the star that led the Wise Men. Or just say Merry Christmas.

New Canadians

Enjoy Christmas in Langley your glass and have a sip.” She assures me that one of your three wishes will come true!

I

n the past five years, Langley has become home to many new Canadians. Some have come here to pursue the Canadian dream, some to avoid persecution and some to escape turmoil in their own country. For these people the idea of Christmas truly is a foreign one but it is a concept that they have come to embrace.

Growing up in El Salvador, Sonia remembers the wonderful family times she enjoyed as a child. El Salvador is not a rich country but its people are rich when it comes to family relationships. On the morning of Christmas day, whole villages turn out to clean the streets. This is because on Christmas Eve hundreds of fireworks were set off and the streets were filled with revellers. The next day once the streets have been tidied up it is off to the beach with

a picnic lunch to enjoy with family and friends. Traditionally, in Mexico and Latin America January 6th, La Dia de Los Reyes (The Feast of the Three Kings) is celebrated as Christmas but today most Latin American Countries celebrate Christmas on the 24th and the 25th of December. This is true for Sonia who will share a meal and be with her daughter and friends. Until 20 years ago Christmas was not celebrated in China. The big event on the Chinese holiday calendar was Chinese New Year. In recent years

In Russia after the 1917 revolution, Christmas was banned along with other religious celebrations. The Russians, being very ingenious people kept the festive spirit alive by transferring their holiday celebrations to the New Year. Victoria is from Moscow and grew up in Soviet Russia. Other than in books she had read she had never heard about Christmas Day. “We had a New Year’s Tree decorated with lights, balls and toys and New Year’s Day was when all the family was together.” In 1992 Christmas celebrations were revived but the holiday is celebrated on the 7th of January in accordance with the Russian Orthodox calendar. Here in Langley Victoria and her family carry on a tradition from her home country. “Just before midnight open a bottle of champagne and fill your glass, on a small piece of napkin write down three wishes, then burn the paper and put the ashes in

the Chinese have started celebrating Christmas but not as a Christian holiday. The majority of Chinese people are Buddhist with very few Christians in their large population. Belinda, Gloria, Vicky and Annie are all from China and though new to Canada have embraced Christmas in a big way. All four have had their Christmas trees up, their houses decorated and they have been ready for the festivities of the season since mid November! For Annie who is from a tropical city on the Southern coast of China, the colour of Christmas is white and being in Canada is as she puts it “a dream come true.” “Many times when I was growing up I was dreaming of a day in the future when I would enjoy a real white Christmas!” she said. Gloria, who is a Christian looks forward to church services with some of her family members who live here. Vicky anticipates the holiday season but will miss her parents and friends who are still in Shanghai. Belinda will probably have the longest holiday season of all as she intends to celebrate right up until Chinese New Year which will take place on January 23, 2012 this year. In Canada, the tradition of Christmas is a long established one. New Canadians are embracing our customs and putting their own distinctive touch on the season.

Old Family Traditions Brought Back

Find New Ways Of Using Ornaments

You don’t have to stick with Christmas ornaments. There is a variety of different objects that create that magical holiday charm you are looking for. Cranberries, Popcorn, Paper Cutouts, Oranges stuck full of cloves and placed around the home as fragrant Christmas balls. Apple slices dried and arranged into wreaths.

You don’t have to use the piece for it’s orignal use. Hang vintage or new stockings and tuck some greenery or flowers inside. Think outside the box and you will come up with interesting ways to use your treasures. Use fabric to wrap up presents or why not use part of the present to cover another present. Example: Flannel PJs wrapped around chocolates with a big red bow.

The computer controlled show has over 12,000 lights, three “leaping arches”, a 20-foot tall “mega tree” with a 3D star and more. The lights are almost exclusively low-power LEDs and the entire show runs off of one standard household outlet. The show is controlled by a salvaged desktop computer running Light-o-Rama software controlling five controllers plus three “cosmic color ribbons.” The show runs Dec. 1 until Jan. 8, from 5 p.m. until 10 p.m. each Sunday to Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Retro Cocktails making a comeback

A passion for Wine & Food by Theresa Harrett Wine Consultant Langley Liquor Store

A

s the Holiday Season desperately tries to take hold of December I find myself longing for simpler times. It is interesting to learn as my children become older, they too insist on re-creating the Christmas Spirit of days gone by. This year I received a unanimous vote when I suggested that spending time with one another would be more beneficial to creating new memories than simply buying gifts. For me, this is proving to be difficult even though it was my idea in the first place. But I must admit there is something exhilarating about walking into a mall mid-December and not feeling the least bit stressed by the buying frenzy of the season. My two daughters, my mother and myself have each chosen a separate day during this month to establish a new memory full of promise and holiday spirit reminiscent of our past , wish me luck. Tara being the oldest daughter, chose first and decided that an overnight stay in Vancouver, dinner at L’abattoir ( a foodies dream ), cocktails at the Vancouver Hotel and dessert at O’Doul’s on Robson should do it. So off we went, overnight bags in tow and the promise of what lay before us swimming in our heads. Bellowing Christmas carols at the top of our lungs led us to the hotel and a stop at the lounge in the Fairmont Hotel kept the dream alive. When the waiter handed out the cocktail lists I was anticipating new flavours and funky drink concoctions with names I couldn’t pronounce and explanations at the ready for my mother. Perhaps even my children would want to know what certain ingredients were, after all, the selling of Wine and Spirits happens to be my career. Ready for the onslaught of questions I was completely surprised when my mother (all of 80 years young) was ordering freely as she was telling the kids about serving these same cocktails when she was young. As I perused the menu I realized that

BC! N I T S R FI

Proudly announces our

1 oz of Grey Goose Pear Vodka 1 oz of St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur Top with Veuve Clicquot Champange

Retro is very much in! A medley of classic cocktails including variations of Manhattan’s, Sidecars, Whiskey Sours, Golden Cadillac’s, Grasshoppers and a variety of fruit flavoured Martini’s dotted the menu. While the past few years have had us indulging in mostly Wine and Beer simply because they are readily available, cocktails have taken a back seat to convenience and after all they are a little intimidating when it comes to preparation, glass wear and garnish. Not only that, but who has the time? At least that is what I thought and then realized that the price of a bottle may appear steep until you realize you’re not going to drink the entire thing. I still have various shades of liquor in my bar that need dusting and perhaps this season is a good time to do it. I began my arduous journey by doing what all mankind do these days... Google! After spending eleven of my junior years bartending I felt I still needed a reminder on the art of a cocktail party and who knows maybe something new was created in the mean time. My first stop was a YouTube video filmed in the Lounge at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. I spent a few minutes watching the bartender create a very decedent champagne cocktail certain to upset not only your pocket book, but your savings account as well. Did it scare me off? Absolutely not. There are ways to make this work and besides I can use the ingredients for more science projects over Christmas.

Serving that holiday nectar here at home would be costly, however, you could easily substitute the Veuve Clicquot for something less expensive as well as the Pear Vodka. Would you want to? well I will leave all of that up to you. There is plenty of bubbles here at the store that would work and Absolut Vodka also comes in Pear. The Elderflower Liqueur is a must. The idea of a cocktail party isn’t new and Retro Cocktails are making a comeback, even the legendary Manhattan has been turned upside down with flavours ranging from vanilla to lychee instead of sweet vermouth. But the original is by far the best and they say that Manhattan’s made with Canadian Whiskey is like no other. So, breakout the bottles and dust off the glassware, it is time to get back into the swing of things this holiday season. For those of you that gave up all of your vintage glassware, go back to the second hand stores, they’re full of them. After all...what well equipped baking section in the grocery store wouldn’t have a jar of maraschino cherries kicking around. Happy Holidays Everyone.. Until Next Time ....................

Cheers to your Obsessions ~Theresa Harrett

n our world of mass production you are hard pressed to come across jewellery with the character and charm found in an old family heirloom. or more than two decades, visitors have been captivated by a magical display of lights, decorations, and displays featured at Christmas in Williams Park. The event returns this year on December 5 and residents and out-of-towners are encouraged to enjoy the sights, sounds, and smells of the holidays during the free, family-oriented holiday celebration. “Christmas in Williams Park is my favorite special event and we look forward to it every year,” said Township of Langley Community Recreation Programmer Alicia Stark, who works with a team of dedicated volunteers to organize the celebration. “I love seeing the smiles on children’s faces and listening to the Christmas carols from those riding the horse and carriages. The smell of roasted chestnuts is unique to our event and one of the reasons people come back every year.” Williams Park is located at 238 Street and 68 Avenue, and every evening between 6 – 9pm, from

“The volunteers on the Christmas in Williams Park Committee work very hard in the months leading up to the event,” said Stark, who noted that the hard work has resulted in a bigger and better event this year. “We are excited to add some new lights and displays which will enhance the festive feel of this years’ event.” The 21st annual Christmas in William Park is free, but donations are gratefully accepted, as all money raised goes back into the cost of staging the event the following year. “This event would not be possible without the many volunteers, service groups, and businesses that support us every year,” Stark said. “Without them, there would be no Christmas in Williams Park.”
