pieces. Among other things, the rusted sign supports have been sand-blasted, re-welded and re-painted in a smooth powdercoat finish. He said other Langley companies have helped with the project, including Balkan Signs, U-blast, Quik-Shot and Hi-Pro Coatings. He is still looking for someone who can handle plastic moldings. Unrau has been shopping at the IGA, the only supermarket in Fort Langley, for 20 years. He has nothing but good things to say about the Lees, the family who own and operate the store and are known for service with a personal touch. When the Lees modernized the more than 70-year-old building at Glover Road and Mavis Avenue a few years ago, they kept the old-style IGA sign that had been hung outside the entrance five decades ago. When Unrau saw the sign had managed to escape the blaze relatively unscathed, he offered to repair it free of charge. It was the first time he’s ever volunteered for anything, he said. Green unveils election running mates NATASHA JONES Times Reporter
When Mayor Rick Green held a campaign launch at Murrayville Community Hall in the summer of 2008, he attracted a crowd of about 50 people. On election night a few months later, the number of supporters at his victory party numbered about half that. Clearly few had expected him to unseat the incumbent mayor, Kurt Alberts.
On Tuesday night, Green returned to Murrayville hall to unveil seven running mates in the Nov. 19 election, drawing a crowd of just over 200 people. Not all were supporters. Sukhi Dhami, who recently asked for Green to step aside while a special prosecutor reviews the RCMP investigation into Green, was in the room, as was mayoral candidate Jack Froese. Green said his running mates are not a slate. As he introduced them, the candidates came up on the stage,

No plans to dispose of school School ‘integral component’ of district’s plan for Willoughby NATASHA JONES

The Willoughby Town Centre will not swallow up Willoughby Elementary School. That assurance has come from Langley School District secretary-treasurer David Green, after suggestions circulated that the town centre proposal would spell the end of the current elementary school, which is situated on the southwest corner of 80 Avenue and 208 Street. An Aldergrove resident says Langley RCMP ignored her family’s complaints about Internet harassment until someone hacked their home phone and called the Mounties to report a nonexistent multiple murder and hostage-taking. Around 12:30 Monday afternoon (July 25), Louise (who did not give her last name) says she heard a strange noise and stepped outside to discover her home was surrounded by heavilyarmed police who yelled at her to put her hands up while they pointed guns at her. A phone call had come in around 11:30 a.m. from a male caller who claimed he’d killed several people and was holding others hostage at the house in the 27100 block of 16 Avenue in Aldergrove. Members of the Lower Mainland District Emergency Response Team (ERT) moved in with police dog services. Paramedics were on standby. After Louise stepped outside, her two teenage children followed. At first, police wanted to charge the teens with public mischief but reconsidered after the family told them about the Internet harassment. “One and a half years ago we called police to our home because our computer, cell and home phones were all being hacked,” Louise said in an e-mail to The Times. “Our computer was wiped clean three times [even though we] had virus protection and changed passwords often,” she added. The hacker constantly harassed her son,“even sending lewd e-mails and bribes to teachers [and posting] our phone numbers, address and names on various porn sites.” Louise said when the principal at her son’s school phoned police they were told they could do nothing. “We called police out three times and they said ‘just stay off the computer, there’s nothing we can do for you’ even though this person was invading our lives every day,” Louise said. The family even tried to hire someone to find out who was responsible, but were unable to. “Now the same individual called in a fake murder at our address,” Louise said. “Now the police take it seriously because their time was wasted.” The family computer has been turned over to the RCMP Tech Crimes Unit.

Shirley Rempel, who owns Country Lane Antiques in Fort Langley, told Township council on Monday what many other merchants and residents already know: that since fire destroyed the IGA grocery store in January, the village has suffered. “I had no idea what an anchor to business and the community the IGA was until we lost it, Rempel said at a heritage alteration permit hearing. “Please, tonight, get it done. Council approved the permit, meaning that all barriers to rebuilding the store on the site at Glover Road and Mavis Avenue have been removed. Although none of the speakers opposed the proposal for a new IGA store and two other retail/office buildings, some expressed concern about the blank wall facing Church Street. Speaking on behalf of a friend who lives on Church Street, Elizabeth Campbell-Ryder wondered if the building could be sited differently. Architect Bruce Rositch noted that the vast majority of people who studied the design like it, just the way it is. “But they are not all living across the street, commented Councillor Kim Richter. The new grocery store is planned for the corner of the property at Church Street and Mavis Avenue. continued, PAGE 5 BEST BUY - CORRECTION NOTICE

Two men fined for excavating creek DAN FERGUSON

trial in April, his lawyer argued there was no proof the digging caused any damage to fish habitat. The prosecutor said no proof of actual harm was required, only evidence that the digging had been carried out. Judge James Jardine agreed with the prosecution, noting that the record of Grewal’s interview by a fisheries officer showed he knew the work would interfere with a fishery. While Grewal was not on the scene when the excavation work was carried out, the judge said Grewal arranged for the rental of an excavator and did not tell the operator of the machine about the fishery issue.

Two men who illegally dug up Howes Creek near 16 Avenue and 264 Street in Aldergrove have been fined $1,100 for violating the Fisheries Act. Shaminder Mallhi pleaded guilty to two counts of “harmful alteration of fish habitat” for excavating the creek to improve water flow through his property and was fined $1,000 for the Oct. 25, 2008 digging. Mallhi’s friend, Agyapal Grewal, was fined $100 after he was convicted of one count of excavating the creek. At Grewal’s Surrey Provincial Court

Street, Fort Langley Community Association vice-president Connie Blundy called the design “a really excellent use of space.” Misty Van Popta hoped the complex will provide bicycle stands. “Fort Langley is a mecca for men in Spandex,” she said. “A good suggestion,” said Mayor Rick Green. However, no one on council would support Councillor Kim Richter’s motion for bike racks and increased landscaping.
The 11,400 square foot building will be almost 30 feet tall. The parking lot is to the south. The two two-storey commercial buildings are approximately 28 feet tall. Shops are planned for the ground floor, with offices above. The two buildings will be connected by an open, second story balcony above a breezeway. Langley resident facing riot charges DAN FERGUSON Times Reporter
One Langley resident is among the 37 people who have turned themselves in to police for taking part in the Stanley Cup riot on June 15. The Vancouver Police Department’s Integrated Riot Investigation Team (IRIT) said it is currently preparing charges against the 30 men and seven women. Most of them were from Surrey (nine) Vancouver (seven) and Maple Ridge (four). Their names were not released. IRIT said another 111 people are under investigation for potential charges of participating in a riot, assault, assaulting a police officer, mischief, break
and enter, theft, robbery, arson, weapons possession, and possession of stolen property. “There are literally hundreds more [rioters] who have been identified and who will become the subject of an investigation in the coming months, a Vancouver Police statement said. The trouble started in the closing seconds of the game when a thick plume of smoke wafted above the crowd on West Georgia Street in front of the central post office building near the stadium, believed to be from fireworks. Moments later, a car burst into flames and fights broke out. Then, a second car was flipped and burst into flames. People set fires, vandalized property, and looted stores in the Vancouver
downtown core, including the iconic Bay store on Granville Street. Windows were smashed, cars were burned, liquor stores and other retailers were broken into and looted. Police released tear gas to dis perse crowds on Granville and Georgia Streets. Fifty police and civilian experts from around the region are work ing in IRIT, combing through a flood of photos and videos taken by witnesses to the riot. The team said it has cata logued hundreds of images o still-unknown people taken dur ing the rioting that followed the Canucks loss. Any other rioters who want to turn themselves in should call 778 838-2124 to make arrangements.

Township Mayor Rick Green announced his running mates on Tuesday at Murrayville Hall, under the Vote Langley Now banner. From left, Green, Dave Stark, Dorothy McKim, Glen Tomblin, Ben Penner, Tyler deBoer, Tony Malyk and Carla Robin.

Ferguson, Bev Dornan and Jordan Bateman, with Kim Richter the ‘plus one,’ caused him to “reach the point where I cannot sit back any more and watch what is happening to our hard working taxpayers and our community.” Kositsky, the longestserving member of council, “deserves to be respected,” Green said, as he does not attack Green when he disagrees with him. Green and a majority of council have been at loggerheads since his election. “It’s been a very difficult first term,” Green said, adding that most of the incumbents were resistant to change and co-operation, and six of them formed a coalition against him. “This will be a watershed election,” Green said. He called the Vote Langley Now candidates “a group of very independent residents . . . who will have their own individual platforms and individual belief systems.” Saying he has not enjoyed his first term as mayor, Green said, “I refuse to get into the ditch with anybody. I am taking the high road.”

Summer maintenance is the best way to help your car recover. A good rule of thumb is that a change of season equals a change of oil. Changing your car's oil and filter every three months or 5,000 kms, whichever comes first, will ensure that your car operates at peak efficiency. Changing oil regularly is the single most important thing that can be done to extend the life of your vehicle and keep it running smoothly.

ast Wednesday, Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Blair Lekstrom and Langley MLA Mary Polak announced there will be a new design for the Mufford Overpass project. All residents of Langley are anxious to see the latest design of this overpass, which the two MLAs said will alienate less farmland, while sticking to the same basic transportation patterns and location as contained in the earlier overpass proposal. When a design is actually produced that the public can look at and evaluate, then it will be appropriate to comment on the government’s proposal. For now, all we have is a promise that the new design will use less farmland. That’s a good thing — but what we don’t know is how the overpass project will fit into the overall community, and how it will affect the rural areas of Langley within the ALR.

T
he newspaper business involves much more than the news stories that many readers turn to. A vital part of the business is the advertising that each newspaper and news website carries. It is, quite literally at times, the bread and butter of the business. The Times has been very privileged to have had Jean Hincks as our advertising manager for the past six years. With a background of 25 years as an advertising rep and manager, she is knowledgeable, professional, personable and good to work with, as her sales representatives, other Times staffers and customers can attest to. She has now left The Times to become publisher of a sister Black Press operation, the BurnabyNew Westminster News Leader. All of us at The Times wish her all the best. We know we also speak for many people in the community whom she has worked closely with. She has helped businesses, non-profit organizations and community groups with many campaigns. Her ability and talents helped the campaigns to meet and exceed their goals. That’s a level of service that anyone can be proud of.

bbotsford is in the public spotlight for the right reasons. After a decade that saw gang violence, frequent shootings, targeted killings and this city labelled with the dubious moniker “murder capital of Canada” in the national press, the city had a reputation in need of repair. And it is being overhauled. Abbotsford is now statistically doing better than neighbouring municipalities, with fewer crimes, and less severe crimes, according to the Statistics Canada numbers released last week. Overall crime is down 12.3 per cent in Abbotsford, and violent crime is down 26 per cent. Those are impressive reductions, and the numbers confirm a noticeable change in the community. Chief Bob Rich and the Abbotsford Police Department have shown dedication and resourcefulness in tackling crime in this community. They launched a crime prevention and awareness campaign focused on making young people and parents aware of the dangers and myths associated with a criminal lifestyle. Identifying local gang members, and making their lives in Abbotsford difficult, was another important part of the campaign against crime. Joining with Abbotsford’s licensed establishments, they have made this community an inhospitable one for the criminal element. And most importantly, they have brought charges against many of the key players on the Abbotsford crime scene. There is still a lot of work to be done before Abbotsford could boast of being the safest city in B.C. — the department’s goal. But they have made a great start. —Abbotsford News (Black Press) The Langley Times is a member of the British Columbia Press Council, a self-regulatory body governing the province’s newspaper industry. Overpass misses big problem Editor: We now know that a better solution was possible to provide a Mufford overpass, but not require paving 29 acres of farmland. The question is, why did Township council fight so hard against being open to a better solution? Perhaps if the Township and City councils now put their heads together in co-operation, they could seize an even better solution. They recognize the political carrot to fulfill the obligation of the railway forever and provide “an overpass” at the very cheapest cost possible, but at the same time do nothing to alleviate the problem where it actually exists — Langley Bypass. According to TransLink, “an average three-minute at-grade closing time would result in a traffic disruption of 15 minutes. This is for an average twokilometre train, but a fourkilometre train would take at least six minutes to pass and therefore “multiplies” into a 30-minute traffic impact. MP Mark Warawa stated in Parliament “It is estimated that some trains will take 15 minutes to pass through a crossing.” The City of Langley Master Submitted photo Transportation Plan records a Langley MLA Mary Polak andTransportation and Infrastructure traffic volume of 29,000 vehi- Minister Blair Lekstrom looked at Mufford Crescent last week, cles per day presently on Lanwhile a container train passed in the background. gley Bypass. This is projected When the number of trains increases to to grow by 40 per cent, to 33 trains per day, multiplied by the 42-min40,600, by 2021. This will multiply to a ute impact on traffic, that reaches critical 42-minute impact on rail crossing traffic.
Thanks to Wildwood residents Editor: Too often, kind actions are left unacknowledged. On Sunday afternoon (July 24), I was driving out to Langley from downtown Vancouver to visit my parents for dinner. Most unfortunately, my Honda Civic’s transmission decided to give way on the 200 Street hill. So as not to impede the busy traffic flow on that street, as I was losing power quickly, I managed to turn right onto Willoughby Way and the car finally came to rest at the corner of Wildwood Drive. It was evident it would have to be towed to a repair shop, which I had been predicting the week before. Luckily within a few minutes, several people came to see what the problem was. A nice gentleman in a yellow shirt helped me push the car off the road and to the side.
Editor: This is in response to the July 7 article regarding Rozlyn Kromhoff-Francis’s dog being denied admission to Langley’s Canada Day celebration. Anyone who knows me would tell you that I am a dog lover through and through, and a responsible dog owner. I leave my dog at home when I attend public events — always and without exception. This is my rationale for that personal policy: ❒ Not everyone is as enamoured with my pet as I am. Some people are afraid of dogs, some people are allergic to them and some people simply don’t like them. ❒ My dog poops and pees in public. Yes, I carry a supply of baggies and always clean up when he defecates but he still urinates, sometimes in the least convenient places. I think it is less than considerate to have dogs peeing all around public events. ❒ I consider the comfort of my dog. Crowds, noise, perhaps heat, the temptation to eat litter/food on the ground — these are just a few of the factors that convince me that he’ll be much happier in the comfort and safety of his own home. While I do agreed with the suggestion that there should have been advance notice that the Canada Day celebration was a no-dog event, I don’t believe the event organizers should provide dog sitting or doggie daycare. I would not expect the provision of on-site care for my children, and certainly not for my dog. There are simply venues, events and places where dogs should not be allowed. Dog owners and dog lovers, it really is OK to leave your beloved four-legged companion at home. I assure you, he will appreciate the peace and quiet far more than being hauled around a hot, crowded event for a few hours. And dare I say, you’ll have just as much fun (or more) without your pet in tow. For the sake of your dog and in consideration of others, please leave your dogs at home. L. Peters, Langley
Statements questioned Editor: Re: “Seven attend antiGreen rally,” (The Times, July 19). Are you kidding me? At this well-organized rally, Joe Zaccaria is quoted as saying “a lot of calls were received from people who told us that they support us, but would not attend because they felt there would be retaliation from the few vocal supporters out there who think Rick Green can do no wrong. He also stated “they are concerned that Mayor Green and a handful of his supporters would expose them to ridicule.” These comments are exposing him and the other six members of
his group to substantial ridicule. His statement regarding intimidation has very dark implications that absolutely don’t apply in a free democracy like Canada. I think military veterans and serving soldiers would especially take offence, as I do, to a public statement like this and all that it implies. It is a testimony to our freedom of speech, and freedom from intimidation from anyone we disagree with, that Zaccaria and his group were able to hold their rally. Robert Moats, Langley

Shaunna Haidar of Wolfe Subaru offered assistance. Two other people (from a special needs group home in the area) also kindly enquired if they could help. While I waited for a tow in the hot sun, I sat back on the edge of the cool lawn of the house my car sat in front of. The woman who owned the house, Lisa, came out and enquired as to my troubles. She kindly offered me a much needed glass of water. She also stayed and chatted until the BCAA truck came, and we had a lovely conversation. Thank you to the people of Wildwood Drive. Please continue your neighbourliness. It made a rather miserable situation into a pleasant afternoon. Diana Hancock, Vancouver
mass. Traffic will never clear. There will be a total gridlock situation on Highway 10. If, as MLA Mary Polak states, there will be “38 four-kilometre trains per day by 2021,” up from the present 18 two-kilometre trains, and this is multiplied by a 40 per cent vehicle increase, it means 845 cars will be parked on the Langley Bypass and Glover Road while a train passes. This is hardly carbon neutral. So what will the Mufford Overpass accomplish, if you have not solved the real problem on the Langley Bypass? Deltaport’s third berth and Terminal 2 are able to ship 1.8 million TEUs (20-foot containers), but motorists physically and truck drivers legally unable to divert onto Mufford Overpass will sit and wait, and wait. So why does this government want to put the overpass in the Mufford Crescent area, to serve only 16,000 cars per day, rather than benefit the 40,600 vehicles which will use Highway 10 (Langley Bypass) every day? It’s simple. The electorate think they have a great deal, but the railway really has the better deal, forever. It’s winwin? Now I see the wisdom of upgrading Glover Road to a four-lane parking lot. Do the right thing to solve the problem. Make the user pay.Toll the 1.8 million containers which will cross the highway by rail. It’s a mere bag of shells. Dean Holcombe, Langley

Sand volleyball, field lacrosse, field hockey, mountain biking, and rugby competitions were all played in the park, which is adjacent to the Langley Events Centre and R. E. Mountain Secondary. Fire ban still on

Despite the wet, cool summer so far, Township residents are still not allowed backyard burning. The problem with backyard bonfires is that they create smoke that inundates the air with particulates, making breathing uncomfortable for others and causing damage to the environment, said Township Assistant Fire Chief Pat Walker. As well, fires pose a risk of running out of control. While it has been rainy for some time, it doesn’t take long for grass and trees to become dry and extremely flammable when the sun comes out. Campfires are allowed only in regional parks, and only when weather conditions allow. Those who violate the rules can be fined. A burning ban is in place throughout the Township year-round, with the exception of the month of April and from Sept. 15 to Oct. 31.

Smart meter concerns raised at Township council NATASHA JONES Times Reporter
The modernization of BC Hydro’s metering system is intended to be safer, more reliable and cost effective than the current system, and reduce electricity theft. But Hydro’s smart meter technology may also be hazardous to health, polluting homes and the outdoors with environmental poison, a resident told Township council on Monday. Hydro anticipates that its conversion from manual meter reading to the new technology will be completed by 2012. Smart meters record consumption of electric energy in intervals of an hour or less and communicate that data remotely back to the utility for monitoring and billing purposes. The problem, Una St. Clair told council, is that the meters radiate microwave frequency day and night. Unlike cell phones, which expose only the head to non-ionizing radio-frequency radiation, smart meters expose the whole body to what the World Health Organization in May classified “as possibly carcinogenic to humans.” “This is changing across Europe,” St. Clair said, pointing to a Council of Europe resolution that calls for a reduction in human exposure to electromagnetic fields and microwave radiation from cell phones and other wireless devices. The resolution calls on the 47 member governments to impose a ban on mobile phones, DECT cordless phones, WiFi or wLAN systems in class-
rooms and schools. Councillor Jordan Bateman circulated a fact sheet from the provincial Ministry of Mines and Energy which endorses smart meters and claims that WHO “has concluded that there is no evidence exposure to low level electromagnetic fields is harmful to human health.” “Have you spoken to Hydro?” Bateman asked St. Clair. “Consistently,” St. Clair replied, adding that the company has told her that she if she wants her smart meter attached to a part of her property other than her house, she can expect to pay between $6,000 and $12,000. She said that the symptoms of distress in the body are sometimes exhibited before those of cancer appear. “I believe this is a human right, Councillor a democratic right (for people) to Jordan choose their own poisons in their Bateman homes,” she said to applause from the approximately 100 people in the gallery. She asked council to ask the provincial and federal ministers of health to place a moratorium on the installation of smart meters until an independent assessment is carried out and wired alternative solutions are provided at no cost to consumers. A majority of council agreed to her request. Bateman and Councillors Grant Ward and Mel Kositsky did not support writing the letter.

Costco to sell gas NATASHA JONES Times Reporter
Costco’s development permit application for a gas station at its Willoughby location was approved by Township council on Monday. However, the warehouse giant will have to locate the eight-pump gas bar further away from the Amberleigh townhouses on 65 Avenue. The gas bar can now be built on the southeast corner of 64 Avenue and the 204 Street/Willowbrook Connector, a location that the company had initially favoured. A fresh application placed the gas bar on the northeast corner of the connector and 65 Avenue, but after hearing from neighbours, council approved the change. Costco will also have to abide by several conditions. Customers will not be allowed to queue on a public road as they wait to fill up, Costco will have to improve fencing around a children’s play area fronting 65 Avenue, and create a better barrier of trees and shrubs for visual and noise

abatement. Amberleigh residents Sabina and Ernie Weber told council of their concerns. Sabina Weber urged council to deny the application or move the gas bar to the southeast corner — “as far as possible from residences.” She was concerned about pollution from idling cars, the safety aspect of tankers filling the underground gas tanks, and bright lights. Her husband questioned why council would approve a gas bar at the northeast corner of the property when the southeast would suffice. Their neighbour, Jennie Harker, also asked that the gas bar be located “as far away from us as possible.” Traffic analyst Sonia Hennum said that the northeast corner of the 12.80 acre parcel is the least-used part of the parking lot and would have the least impact on traffic flow and parking. “Do you really need a gas bar?” Councillor Kim Richter asked. “It’s something we see as a benefit for our members,” the project’s architect replied.

Rams ready to kick off in Langley

Compete. That is what first-year head coach Jeff Alamolhoda sums up he is looking for from his football team, the Langley Rams. “We need to be able to come out every week and compete,” he said. “If we can do that ... I think we can deem that as a success. “As long as we are competing and fighting and clawing every week and that guys aren’t hanging their heads if we do get one loss here or there.” The Rams, who moved to Langley in the spring after more than 60 years in Surrey and South Surrey, begin the 2011 B.C. Junior Football Conference schedule on Saturday at McLeod Park. The league is for players ages 18 to 22. And the team faces a stiff test to start, the Vancouver Island Raiders. The Raiders and the Okanagan Sun — who were both 9-1 last season — return several key players from last season, so they should both once

The Rams, the Westshore (Victoria) Rebels, Kamloops Broncos and Chilliwack Huskers make up the rest of the league. Alamolhoda said his squad features a strong returning core — about a quarter of the 2010 roster — who wanted to be a part of the organization’s move east from Surrey. “They have a sense of pride that
goes with the Rams, and they wanted to continue with that,” he said. “Those are the guys that are going to fight tooth and nail on the field.” Combining that returning group with a strong crop of new recruits leaves Alamolhoda optimistic. “We have some very good athletes in key spots, including quarterback, running back and some receiver spots, as well as on the opposite side of the ball,” Alamolhoda said. The starting quarterback role will be filled by Nate White, who started about half of last season, missing time because of injury. White threw for 1,160 yards with 11 touchdowns and seven interceptions in 2010. “Coming into camp, he has shown everyone that he definitely has the ability to be a starting quarterback in this league and an elite quarterback in this league,”Alamolhoda said. The coach plans to use the team’s speed to its advantage. Nick Downey, the reigning Canadian Junior Football League special teams player of the year in 2010, is back. Last season, he recorded more than 1,000 return yards and ran back three kicks for touchdowns.
Alamolhoda plans on giving Downey more of a shot on offence. “We will try and utilize him on the offensive side of the ball and get the football in his hands and see what he can really do,” the coach explained. Last year, he rushed for 114 yards on just eight attempts, and caught 15 passes for 397 yards and four touchdowns. The defence will be anchored by corner Jordan Linnen, who earned an invite to the B.C. Lions main training camp and showed well enough to play in a pre-season game. Defensive lineman Kurtis Pedersen, who led the team last year with seven sacks, is also back. “The game is going to be a lot faster for (the younger guys) at first. We just have to make sure that we keep focused, keep our eye on the prize, per se,”Alamolhoda said. “Stay focused and understand it is a process, it is going to be a long process, and we want to accomplish our main goals towards the end of the year. “As long as we get better every week and be competitive week in and week out, that will deem our season a success.”

After spending the past month hitting each other, the Langley Rams will finally get the opportunity to hit an opponent. The junior (ages 18-22) football Rams mark their first year in Langley after spending more than 60 years in Surrey and South Surrey. The team hosts the Vancouver Island Raiders on Saturday (July 30) at McLeod Park. Kick-off is 5 p.m. The Rams were 5-5 in 2010 while the Raiders were 9-1 and are the five-time defending B.C. Junior Football Conference champions. Head coach Jeff Alamolhoda said his troops are raring to go for some game action. “You can’t mimic game speed and you can’t mimic the feeling you get when you have an opponent across from you,” he said. “The guys are real excited; we will be able to hit someone with a different colour jersey on. The team has been training for the past month in anticipation of their season opener. “We have worked hard to get ready for this, now it is just about getting them out on the football field and being able to fly and make plays and have some fun.”

Thunder teammates were competing at the B.C. Lacrosse Association box lacrosse provincial championships over the weekend in Coquitlam. Langley tied once and lost twice in their round-robin games. ••••• After a standout rookie year, Alicia Perrin has been selected to play for Canada in next month’s FISU World University Games (Summer Universaide). Perrin averaged 1.26 blocks per set, second in the conference, and had a team-leading attacking percentage of 25.0 per cent for the Trinity Western Spartans women’s volleyball team. The middle blocker was one of the 12 players named by Volleyball Canada on Tuesday for the World University Games, which run Aug. 14-21 in Shenzen, China. Perrin, the Canada West rookie of the year, was also named to the Canadian Interuniversity Sport all-rookie team and helped the Spartans win bronze at nationals. ••••• It was a tale of two halves for Darren Wallace at the PGA’s RBC Canadian Open. On the back nine during the first and second rounds of last week’s event at Vancouver’s Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club, the 22-year-old from Langley played the tough course 3-under par. But it was the front nine on both the Thursday and Friday which did in the young golfer. Wallace shot those 18 holes 9-over par, a result which had him finish his 36 holes at 6-over par, missing the cut by two strokes. The event was won by the U.S’s Sean O’Hair in a playoff. He finshed 4-under par. Wallace also played the 2004 Canadian Open as a 15-yearold — after becoming the youngest winner ever of the Canadian Amateur Championship.

Langley hammers Hastings Tied at two runs through the first four innings, Langley’s bats exploded in the late going, as they hammered Hastings 12-4 in the championship final at the 23rd annual Drew Henderson Memorial Tournament. The tournament was hosted by Whalley Little League, and the Langley team consisted of 11-year-olds from Langley and North Langley joining on one squad. With the score tied in the final, Langley took control with three runs in the top of the fifth and then put the game out of reach with seven more runs in the sixth, including a home run from Mack Berry. Cole Perrie was named player of the game after going 4-for-4 at the plate and pitching the game’s final two innings. Langley finished atop their pool and edged Whalley in the semifinals.

Thunder through to provincials With the season on the line, the Langley intermediate A Thunder came through in the clutch. The Thunder, backstopped by the stellar goaltending of Giulio del Bianco, came away with a convincing 13-5 victory over the Delta Islanders on Sunday at the Langley Events Centre. The win advances Langley to this weekend’s provincial championships, the first time the team has accomplished that goal since coming to town a few years ago. The Thunder were fourth during the regular season in the B.C. Intermediate Lacrosse League with a 13-11 record in the nine-team league. In addition to the team’s success, Langley received some great individual seasons as well. Brett Dobray led the league with 68 goals, James Baker was third in points with 98, and James Rahe was the team’s top two-way player, finishing tenth in league scoring with 81 points. The Thunder play at New Westminster’s Queen’s Park Arena this weekend for the provincial championships. They are up against Richmond, Coquitlam and New Westminster.
