What an achievement, Lifelong Learning is 100 this year! Am gamp! Mae Dysgu Gydol Oes yn cyrraedd ei 100 oed eleni! In 1919 the first Director of Extra Mural studies was appointed at Aberystwyth University and this is when we officially became a department. We are the 2nd oldest Lifelong Learning department in the UK and first to be established in Wales! We are celebrating this momentous year with showcase courses, intensive and newly written modules in a wide range of subject areas and in your locality. I am sure there will be something to interest you, and don’t forget to tell your friends! You could always come on an intensive course and stay on campus at affordable prices or in town near the sea. Why not treat your learning as a mini-holiday? Through joining our learning community you will meet new friends, learn something stimulating, enhance your skills and improve your well-being. It is a well-known fact that learning something new increases your feeling of well-being and if you look at the cost of our courses per hour we are great value!

Yn 1919 penodwyd y Cyfarwyddwr cyntaf ar Efrydiau Allanol ym Mhrifysgol Aberystwyth a dyna pryd y daethom yn adran yn swyddogol. Ni yw’r adran Dysgu Gydol Oes hynaf ond un drwy wledydd Prydain, a’r un gyntaf a sefydlwyd yng Nghymru! Rydym yn dathlu’r flwyddyn fawreddog hon â chyrsiau arddangos, modiwlau dwys, a modiwlau wedi’u llunio o’r newydd a hynny mewn amrywiaeth eang o bynciau ac mewn lleoliadau yn eich ardal chi. Rwy’n siŵr y bydd rhywbeth at eich dant, a chofiwch sôn wrth eich ffrindiau! Gallech gymryd un o’r cyrsiau dwys ac aros ar y campws am bris rhesymol iawn, neu yn y dref ger y lli. Beth am feddwl am eich cwrs fel rhyw wyliau bach? Drwy ymuno â’n cymuned ddysgu byddwch yn gwneud ffrindiau newydd, dysgu rhywbeth i’ch ysbrydoli, cyfoethogi’ch sgiliau a gwella’ch lles. Mae’n ffaith hysbys bod dysgu rhywbeth newydd yn llesol, yn gwneud i chi deimlo’n well, ac os edrychwch ar gostau ein cyrsiau fesul awr, rydym yn cynnig gwerth gwych am arian!

To celebrate our 100th birthday we are offering our loyal Lifelong Learning students and any new students some special discounts. This can be claimed on top of a concession and an early bird discount.

I ddathlu ein pen-blwydd yn 100 oed, rydym yn cynnig gostyngiadau arbennig i ffyddloniaid yr adran Dysgu Gydol Oes ac i fyfyrwyr newydd. Gellir hawlio’r gostyngiad hwnnw ar ben y cyfraddau gostyngedig arferol a’r gostyngiad archebu’n gynnar.

If you have encouraged another student to enrol on a course just give their name when you contact us to receive your discount. A ‘new student’ is someone who has not been on a Lifelong Learning course at Aberystwyth University since 2015-16.

As part of our 100 celebrations we have organised four days of free events during the year. There will be lunchtime tours at the School of Art so you can find out more about our excellent university collections. Plus a series of free lectures held in Aberystwyth on a variety of interesting topics. Everyone is welcome to attend. Please contact the Lifelong Learning Office if you would like to attend any of these events.

Free Taster Sessions Sesiynau Rhagflas am Ddim

During October 2019 we are running taster sessions for four of our courses in the humanities in Aberystwyth. These taster sessions happen a week before the full course begins. Come along for an hour to find out more about the course, meet the tutor and ask any questions you may have. If you like the sound of the course you can then enrol. What’s new this year in Art and Design? Beth sy’n newydd eleni yng Nghelf a Dylunio? Come join us for our 100 year celebrations. We have been busy writing new modules and appointing new tutors to invigorate our programme for the big birthday. Many courses are intensive and over a weekend; why not bring a friend to share in our learning community? Here are a few details of our new courses:

CREATIVE WATERCOLOUR is suitable for all. It is just 10 hours of learning about colour theory and enjoying the movement of paint. No drawing required.

NARRATIVES IN ART is for students who want a meaty course to develop their own visual voice. This is taught in a tutorial module style; students are given a theme to work on between sessions. The tutor will facilitate discussion, support and critique. This is excellent for students wanting to generate a portfolio.

NARRATIVES IN ART - cwrs i fyfyrwyr sydd am gael cwrs o sylwedd i ddatblygu eu llais gweledol eu hunain. JUST INK! is what it says, a whole module studying the versatility of ink. Lots of lovely drawing and painting.

The JUST PENCILS! is exactly the same concept but rejoicing in the techniques of the humble pencil. Did you know pencils aren’t made of lead?

FIGURATIVELY SPEAKING is a distance learning art history module with a twist; you look at sculpture ‘in the round’ and learn some pretty funky information. The ‘live’ assessment requires you to make an audio or film of a sculpture that can be accessed by the public using a QR code. This module has won a Virtual Learning Environment Award.

Our courses enable our students to start with an introduction to digital photography where the tutor will show you how to hold the camera, configure the digital settings, select lens and create a composition. Students can then confidently progress to Wildlife Digital Photography later in the year. We even have a course for budding ecologists on the topic of macro photography. Why not pair it with one of our Ecology and Conservation courses like The Diversity of Invertebrates in West Wales?

This platform is based on tandem learning. Tandem Learning can offer additional help in making the most of the International dimension of the University. By becoming partners with someone who speaks the language you would like to learn or practice, you will take responsibility for your own learning, and by doing so you will be able to discover another culture and another language. We believe this has helped learners to look at the world through different eyes. Members of the Language Exchange Platform are able not only to work face-to-face, but also via Skype with others in Spain. They will be able to work with other Universities in France and Germany.

Students on our psychology courses come from a wide range of backgrounds. Some are studying to gain skills to enhance their employability while others are interested in just broadening their understanding of psychology and practice.

We also offer residential courses at some beautiful locations.

There are no entry requirements for the courses, but in some cases it is helpful for you to have completed entry level courses before progressing to the next stage. If in doubt – just ask! What is Lifelong Learning? Beth yw Dysgu Gydol Oes?

What level is a lifelong learning course? Beth yw lefel cwrs Dysgu Gydol Oes? All accredited qualifications are awarded a National Qualifications Framework (NQF) level, endorsed by the Qualifications, Curriculum and Assessment Authority for Wales. The framework aims to help you make informed decisions about the qualifications you would like to gain.

The Student-Staff Committee of Lifelong Learning provides a formal channel of communication between students and the Lifelong Learning department, and it is an essential part of it. Students from the different subject areas are represented in this Committee. The Student-Staff Committee of Lifelong Learning provides an important forum for staff and students to discuss any problems and issues that may arise. Although the Committee does not have formal policy-making powers, its advisory role is taken very seriously by Lifelong Learning, and the participation of all the students is positively encouraged. The Committee also has a social role and can take initiatives in proposing and organizing social events. I went to LLL classes to improve my painting and to make new friends. Little did I know that the classes would become a gateway for me to study for a Masters in Fine Art at Aberystwyth University. My class tutor encouraged me to apply for the MA, helped with the selection of my portfolio and even waited outside whilst I had the interview tooâ&#x20AC;Ś The end of course assessments might sound daunting but they are not at all... I learnt so much through LLL and would thoroughly recommend them.
