New executive director takes the reins at Lake Lanier Association By Pamela A. Keene The Lake Lanier Association has a new executive director. Gainesville resident Jennifer Flowers’ first day on the job was Monday, July 15. She replaces Joanna Cloud, who now works in the private sector with Marine Specialties Inc. Flowers worked for more than eight years in the Water Resources Department for the City of Gainesville. Specifically, she worked with water conservation and water quality issues, as well as storm-water run-off and environmental protection. “Jennifer’s application was among the first, if not the first, that we received for the position,” said John Barker, president of the association. “She was the first to apply and the last one standing. The board and I feel like Jennifer is the exact best fit for the association going forward. The decision to hire her was unanimous.” Flowers has worked in the water resources arena for the past 10 years. A graduate of the University of Georgia with a bachelor of science degree in ecology, she worked in New Jersey with AmeriCorps on river cleanups, monitoring and public education programs. She also earned her
master’s degree in environmental law and policy from the Vermont Law School before returning to Georgia to work for the City of Gainesville. She was recently selected to participate in the 2019 Institute for Georgia Environmental Leadership, a five-week program with sessions held around the state. Each session focuses on different environmental issues that affect the state. “I am so excited to join the Lake Lanier Association as executive director,” Flowers said. “Already I feel like I know many of the Lake Lanier stakeholders and leadership in the area, plus my experience has put me in the position of being familiar with and understanding water policy and regulations.” During her tenure with the City of Gainesville, Flowers managed community programs and outreach, working with residents and businesses regarding water conservation, pollution and environmental concerns. She also organized public meetings, including setting up a panel to bring together interested parties around the Tri-State Water Negotiations and speaking to schools and civic groups.
Jennifer Flowers.
“I enjoyed all aspects of my work, but particularly my community outreach and education stands out,” she said. “Meeting so many people in the community and learning about issues and how they can be addressed has been very rewarding.” She interfaced with the Metropolitan North Georgia Water Planning District. As a member of the Hall County Green Alliance, she chaired the group’s Land/Water and Public Education Workgroups She also served as a board member for Keep Hall Beautiful, a member of the Georgia Association of Water Professionals and on the Training Advisory Committee.
One of her first priorities will be meeting with environmental, community and governmental leadership to jump-start her work with the association. “Lake Lanier is vital to this area, to Northeast Georgia and the state on so many levels,” Flowers said. “Georgia wouldn’t be what it is – from an economic standpoint, a conservation perspective and agriculturally – without Lake Lanier. And our partnerships with leadership and the community are vital or achieving the association’s mission and purpose.” Flowers is also gearing up for this year’s Shore Sweep, slated for Saturday, Sept. 14. Fishing news
Angling for catfish equal summertime at its best
Have you really and truly lived a good southern life if you haven’t spent a whole day fishing and then fried up a “mess” of catfish for dinner? Catfishing provides great opportunities for new and experienced anglers, according to the Georgia Department of Natural Resources’ Wildlife Resources Division. “Georgia provides plenty of opportunities for folks to toss out a line for catfish,” says Matt Thomas, WRD Fisheries Management Chief. “Catching catfish requires relatively simple gear and is a great way to introduce someone new to fishing, especially kids, so grab your gear and make plans to get out and go fish.” Georgia’s public waterways are home to several species of catfish, including channel, white, blue, flathead and bullheads (consisting of several similar species – yellow, brown, snail, spotted and flat). While you may not catch them often, the larger species, like flathead catfish, can sometimes reach monster weights in excess of 100 pounds – and that’s no tall fish tale! As summertime gets closer to
its peak, WRD highlights Lake Lanier and offers tips on techniques and equipment for anglers of all skill levels: • Lake Lanier – supports lots of small channel catfish (1-2 pounds) lake wide and fewer flathead catfish (10-40 pounds), which can be found up the Chattahoochee and Chestatee arms of the lake. As a rule, the species and size of catfish dictate the fishing line and bait used: • If targeting channel and white catfish, fisheries biologists recommend eight to 14-pound test line and medium-sized hooks (size 2 to 1/0) under a bobber or fished on the bottom. Best baits for channel catfish are worms, liver, live minnows, shrimp, cut bait and stink bait. For anglers trying to land a large blue or flathead catfish, heavy tackle is a must – large spinning or casting tackle with at least 20 to 50pound test braid or monofilament line, large hooks (3/0 to 8/0), and heavy weights (1-5 oz) to keep bait on the bottom. Flatheads are ambush predators that prey heavily upon fish, so live or freshly
killed fish used as bait will increase your chances. In general, anglers should target rocky shorelines, rip-rap areas, points and outside bends of rivers or the submerged river channel. Catfish will stay in deep areas or “holes” during the day before roaming the shallows at night for food. Though most species of catfish are active throughout the day, the best summer fishing is at dusk and during the night. Catfish can be caught year-round, with the best bite typically from early spring through the peak of summer. Be prepared to fish multiple areas and if you don’t get a bite within 30 minutes, try another are until you find some fish. For more information, visit www.georgiawildlife.com. Get a Georgia Bass Slam Catch five different bass species and you’ll have a Georgia Bass Slam! This program recognizes anglers with the knowledge and skill to catch different species of bass in a variety of habitats across the state, while also stimulating interest in the conservation and management of black bass

and their habitats, according to the Georgia DNR, WRD. Georgia’s 10 recognized native black bass species are largemouth, smallmouth, shoal, Suwannee, spotted, redeye, Chattahoochee, Tallapoosa, Altamaha and Bartram’s. Anglers can find out more about these eligible bass species, including images and locations at www.bassslam.com. To qualify for the Georgia Bass Slam, fish must be caught within a calendar year, must be legally caught on waters where you have permission to fish, and anglers must provide some basic information on the catch (length, weight-if available, county and waterbody where caught) accompanied by several photos of each fish. Anglers will submit information to Georgia.BassSlam@dnr.ga.gov for verification. Complete rules posted at the website. What is Your Reward? Well, besides bragging rights among all the anglers and non-anglers you know, you will receive a certificate worthy of framing, two “Go Fish Education Center” passes, and some fantastic and fun stick-
ers (for vehicle windows/bumpers) to advertise your achievement. Anglers also will be recognized on the WRD website, at the Go Fish Education Center and possibly through a variety of social media platforms. In addition, all successful submissions will go into a drawing for an annual grand prize! Don’t have time to dedicate to catch five species of bass, but maybe you have your eye on a lunker largemouth? We have a program for that, too! The Trophy Bass Angler Award program recognizes largemouth bass catches of 10 pounds or greater. These fish are rare, and the data from these catches helps to provide genetics and growth information that is valuable to fisheries managers. Those that successfully submit a qualified fish will receive a certificate, hat, t-shirt and an entry into a drawing for a reward package. For more information visit www.georgiawildlife. com.

Shore Sweep set for Sept. 14, volunteers needed By Pamela A. Keene Mark your calendars for Saturday, Sept. 14. That’s the 31st Annual Lake Lanier Association Shore Sweep. In the organization’s history, it has collected more than 1,000 tons of trash, garbage and debris from the water and shores of Lanier. “With the lake levels high this year, there is even more debris and trash to be collected than usual,” said Bonny Putney, chair of the Shore Sweep Committee. “We are encouraging people to participate this year and bring their friends. It’s a fun and rewarding event.” Volunteers are needed to provide boats to assist with cleanup, walk land-sites and shorelines to pick up trash, and to assist with removing larger debris.
As the event approaches, there will be several sites for advanced drop-off in the two weeks leading up to this year’s Shore Sweep. This year’s day-of event will have 12 sites with captains to help organize removal. They are Aqualand Marina (public boat ramp), Bald Ridge Marina (public boat ramp), Balus Creek (boat ramp), Clarks Bridge (boat ramp), Don Carter State Park (public boat ramp), Gainesville Marina (public boat ramp), Gwinnett Park (boat ramp), Lake Lanier Islands (walkers only at welcome center), Longwood Park (boat ramp), Port Royale Marina (public boat ramp), University Yacht Club (yacht office boat ramp), and Warhill Park (boat ramp). See Sweep, page 14

Lanier Islands Parkway traffic shifted to new lane
By Pamela A. Keene Safety constraints caused a delay of the traffic shift onto the new section of Lanier Islands Parkway, initially slated for early July. The Georgia Department of Transportation had originally announced a date of July 2 for opening the new road, but because of the July 4 holiday, the opening was delayed until July 15. At press time, the road was set to open July 29 and traffic would then shift to the new lanes. “We delayed a second time to ensure that all the safety elements were in place, including signs, striping and guardrails,” said Katie Strickland, GaDOT’s District One communications officer. “The issue was installing the section of guardrails on top of the concrete wall along the new roadway. It required field adjustments so the opening was postponed.” Coming from the lake, the shift begins
at Holiday Marina and ends at Shoreland Drive. The new section includes a new roundabout at Big Creek and Bethany Creek roads. The guardrail installment is now complete. The old roadbed will be removed and Strickland said that GaDOT will work with property owners to tie in driveways with the new route. The work began in the summer of 2017 to widen Ga. 347 from McEver Road to Lanier Islands, increasing the roadway from two to three lanes and installing the roundabout. The $10.4 million project also includes a 10-foot-wide multi-use path on one side and a 5-foot sidewalk on the other. “The original road was designed by considering the topography of the land, and with our technology today, we have been able to create a straighter route,” she said. “The road is now wider and safer.”
Construction continues along Lanier Islands Parkway.

LCKC hopes to win national championship on home waters By Jane Harrison The Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club aims to emerge at the top again after years of heartbreaking finishes at the American Canoe Association National Sprint Championships and Masters Championships. Local paddlers will have an advantage competing on their home waters at Lake Lanier Olympic Park Aug. 7-10. LCKC Head Coach Zsolt Szadovszki expressed confidence in the team’s ability to win back the points trophy. Chances of coming out on top are “humongous,” he said, “because our club and training is growing and our club has a system starting at a young age up to senior level and these are the results of those efforts.” Szadovszki, who moved to Lake Lanier from Hawaii to begin coaching duties in January, doubles as National Team Coach and divides his time between the local and national squads. He said he gives each equal attention “The good news is there are many athletes at LCKC up to the US National Team Level. The ones that are not are motivated to get there seeing us all on the water,” he said. He declined to predict which particular athletes might excel. “It’s tough to single one out because I feel they will all do well.” Seven LCKC members paddling on the national team have experience with the competitors from other teams. Stanton Collins, Owen Farley-Klacik, Alex Lee, Nate Humbertson, Andrew Surles, Edward Surles, and Shaye Hatchette will dip their paddles to

“Although we focus our shoreline cleanup in September, the Lake Lanier Association and our volunteers are actively working to keep Lake Lanier clean,” Putney said. “Through the years, we have developed a very effective program to reduce the amount of trash and debris at the lake, but there is still more work to be done.” For more info or to volunteer, visit lakelanier.org or call 770 503-7757.

tally points for their home team. Szadovszki expects fierce competition from Gig Harbor, San Diego and Oklahoma. Reigning champion Gig Harbor, a scrappy team from Seattle, Wash., beat out LCKC the last time the championship was on Lanier in 2014. With just 42 athletes making the trip across the country, Gig Harbor bested an 80-athlete Lanier crew by 30 points. LCKC, which has won the national championship 11 times, will undoubtedly aim to avenge that loss. The ACA, formerly USA Canoe/Kayak, is the national governing body for the Olympic paddle sports of canoe slalom, canoe sprint and paracanoe. Regardless of what takes place on the Olympic course, Lake Lanier Olympic Park continues to be a favorite for the national event. This will be the ninth time LCKC teams from across the U.S. will race in the championship on Lanier, according to LCKC President Blair Hickerson. About 500 paddlers and coaches representing about 15 teams will stroke toward
winning the Yonkers Trophy, awarded to the team scoring the most points. “We look forward to welcoming athletes from across the country to the beautiful waters of Lake Lanier and the warm hospitality of Gainesville. I personally want to thank all of generous sponsors and volunteers who make this type of event possible,” she said. “Our club is in charge of organizing the entire event: finding officials, volunteers, medal presentations, hosting the banquet,” she added. A “welcome social” for athletes, coaches, family and friends is set for 4-6 p.m. Aug. 6 on the Olympic plaza. Results will be announced at the awards banquet, 6:30-10:30 p.m. Aug. 10, at the Ramsey Conference Center at Lanier Technical College. The ceremony will include DJ music and a buffet dinner. Tickets are $38 and can be purchased at www.lckc.org. Volunteers desiring to help out can also find information at the club’s website.

Prohibition, common sense and rum running on the Jersey Shore Will Rogers once said ”Thank God we don’t get all the government we pay for.” Among the many examples of this was the 18th Amendment, which forbade the manufacture, sale and consumption of alcohol. Not only did it cost the country many millions of dollars in tax revenues, but also set up any number of businesses, both large and small to circumvent the law. Although the major notoriety was concentrated on the large operations sponsored by organized crime, there was a much smaller and possibly more widespread industry of which I know a little firsthand. I grew up in a little seacoast town near Sandy Hook, N.J. where the two major industries were clam digging and lobstering. My paternal grandfather was a bootlegger who actually owned a speakeasy where he sold booze from the “Rum Row,” a line of ships anchored off shore just beyond the three-mile US Territorial limit where the Coast Guard had no jurisdiction. He also sold his own homemade beer and ’shine. Now it’s hard to explain to outsiders how anyone could collect a few dollars from their

friends, row three miles past the point of the “Hook” and row back in with a fortune’s worth of booze … if they didn’t get caught! The small guys usually weren’t worth the Coast Guard’s attention. The commercial rum runners were another story. They had their boats built by Seaman, a thirdgeneration boat builder in Long Branch, who built all the local lobster boats and Coast Guard boats. These weren’t actually the big “Pickets” or “Cutters” but 55foot “Chase” boats designed to do nothing but go fast and catch rum runners. Paradoxically, they were built in the ways along side of the very boats they were supposed to chase! Both had WWI Liberty aircraft engines, but that’s where similarity ended. The Coast Guard boats were built to government specifications with heavy
ribs and scantlings designed by some third year naval architecture student at the Coast Guard Academy. The rum runners were build light and fast, designed by Seaman. I used to sail with an old lobsterman who would tell me stories. It was all very exciting until you realized that the Coast Guard was playing for keeps. Drying out after last month’s rainfall
July proved once again why it, on average, is the wettest month of the year. We pretty much saw storms each and every afternoon, some days more, some days fewer. The rain these July storms produce is really remarkable. There is a program on our StormTracker 2 HD radar where we can use the Doppler to estimate the amount of rainfall the storms produce in an hour. July storms, feeding on tropical air, are very efficient rainfall producers. It is typical for a summer storm to produce three to four inches of rain per hour. However, more often than not, the storms tend to move. There are those occasions, as we have seen, where the steering currents are weak and the storm seems to linger in the same spot. Flash Flood Warnings usually follow because the runoff just overwhelms storm drains. The July storm season is now over and we are moving head-on into the Dog Days of Summer. I am actually amazed at the number of people who really don’t know what the Dog Days are. Although our pet dogs probably are not as active this time of year or as playful, that is not the reason we call the first two weeks of August the Dog Days. It all has to do with a star. The name of that star is Sirius and it’s the brightest star
in the sky. The Greek and Roman astrologists connected the rising of Glenn Sirius in the eastern sky Burns with heat, drought, severe storms, and bad luck. Lanier In Egypt, the appearOutlook ance of Sirius in the night sky was the signal that the annual flooding of the Nile would soon begin. In Greece, it was a sign the hottest part of the summer had arrived. While many think the Dog Days are the times when it’s just so hot it drives dogs mad, that is certainly not the case! As I mentioned, Sirius is the star the ancients associated with heat and storms. It rises along with the sun every morning this time of year. It’s the brightest star in the sky. It’s nickname is the Dog Star because it’s part of the constellation Canis Major, which is latin for The Greater Dog. And now you know why, these are the dog days! If you are up early and would like to see Sirius, it will be rising just before the sun. If you spot the constellation Orion, just follow Orion’s belt toward the horizon. It’s the brightest star in the morning sky. Also, another point. Stars twinkle, planets don’t. I did not want you to be confused because the light from Venus in the morning is a real powerhouse. Legal expert puzzled by lawsuit delay
By Jane Harrison Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp last month poured $8 million more into a water war with Florida in a legal case that appeared stalled as of July 21. The governor’s expenditure from the state’s emergency fund came after more than three months of inactivity on the case docket, which has run cold since March 22. Lack of activity posted on the docket by Special Master Paul J. Kelly, Jr. has puzzled observers of the 2013 lawsuit. “I think Florida and Georgia

The Penn State Law senior lecturer deemed the unprecedented delay in this case “very strange.” Especially unusual is Kelly’s silence after Florida’s March 12 request for oral argument. “Why? What happened?” Fowler wondered. Kelly seemed to be progressing quickly until the docket went blank after a March 22 change of address list. Fowler posited that if the

Hey, can you hear me now? The next few articles will be a series dealing with the five prominent human senses as they apply to safe boating and correct navigation: hearing, sight, touch, awareness, and balance. Let’s begin with hearing. Imagine if your ability to see with unrestricted visibility on the water was quickly reduced to almost zero. You have probably experienced this weather situation driving your vehicle on the roadway. It can be a very disturbing event. When it comes to boating operations, it is best served safely and that includes confidently maneuvering in adverse conditions. If you go out on the water, for whatever reason, you will someday most likely encounter the scenario of low visibility. It comes in a variety of forms; fog, rain, smoke, day or night, and various combinations of all factors. This dangerous encounter doesn't have to be the end of your voyage, but it does require you to engage other senses, especially hearing, to navigate safely through the risky situation. The proficient use of advanced electronics such as Radar, GPS, and FLIR can be of great value. There is no room for error, everything is at stake, with final decisions to be made expressly by you, the person in charge of piloting the vessel. How’s that for pressure?

measured half a foot low in midJuly. Flint River flow at Bainbridge, Ga. just north of Lake Seminole, was running about 10 percent lower than its 67-year median daily discharge. Apalachicola River discharge on the northern end and in the Florida Panhandle, where oyster beds await freshwater nutrients, was running about 10 percent low. Fowler offered a couple of speculations about why Kelly, described as a punctual justice with no back log, might have slowed down on this one. She theorized that the legacy of former Special Master Ralph Lancaster, who died in January, lingers on through Kelly’s hiring of legal assistant Joshua Dunlap, who worked alongside Lancaster during his term as special master.

Lancaster presided from Oct. 2014 until Kelly’s appointment a year ago. Lancaster ruled against Florida, recommending justices deny Florida’s claims because regardless of Georgia’s water use, the court could do nothing because Corps controls the volume of water that flows downstream. Kelly, 78, a senior judge with the U.S. 10th District Court of Appeals in Santa Fe, N.M., originally ruled the existing record, consisting of millions of pages of physical and electronic documents, would be sufficient to decide the case. However, he composed a list of questions about the volume of water Florida needs, the cost of cutting Georgia’s water use, and other inquiries regarding conservation, Corps projects, and irriga-
tion. Both states responded, with Florida following up with a request for brief oral arguments. Georgia posted no objections. Fowler noted that after Kelly hired Dunlap early this year, the pace dropped off. “He was handling it matter-of-factly, moving quickly until Dunlap was hired,” she said. Perhaps it was then that the enormity of the case hit. More than a year before he passed away Lancaster pondered aloud whether he would live to see the case resolved. “It’s a heck of a lot of work to go through the record,” Fowler said. It’s anyone’s guess whether Kelly’s delay might be a tactic to urge settlement. “I don’t know about any settlement discussion,” Fowler said.

This program takes place from April through October. “As the source of drinking water for more than five million people, Lake Lanier’s water quality is vital,” Caldwell says.
“Lanier, like all lakes, collects and holds nutrients, such as nitrogen and phosphorus that flows into the lake from a number of sources, including agricultural, industrial and wastewater facilities, septic tanks, lawn fertilizers and even storm-water runoff. POKER RUN 2019
Volunteers at the heart of Pirates of Lanier Charity Poker Run By Pamela A. Keene Talk about dedicated and loyal. For the past 11 years, Craig Martin has made the six-hour drive from Orange Park, Fla., to Lake Lanier to help out his high school buddy Dan Gordon with the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run. Five years ago, Martin’s buddy Mike Makauskas decided to come along. “It’s funny how you stay in touch with some people,” said Martin as he handed out sealed envelopes with playing cards at Aqualand Marina for the years Pirates of Lanier Poker Run. “And we really enjoy coming up here and visiting with all the other friends we’ve made, being on the water and just having a good time for a good cause.” Gordon and his volunteer crew set up on Aqualand’s gas dock on the Saturday of the Poker Run and handed out cards. Gordon and his Florida friends were joined by Fred Jones of Buford and Joe Abruscato of Cumming. The sun peeked in and out of the fluffy white clouds and a sometimes breeze kept the crew rela-
tively cool as they worked from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closer to shore the team of judges busied themselves with rating sheets and their cell-phone cameras to capture the spirit of the day. Headed by Gordon’s wife Jenny, the team diligently reviewed each boat and crew as it passed by the reviewing area. Her team included Abruscato’s wife Denise, daughters Nicole and Veronica and granddaughter Niah plus brother-in-law Tom Brown
and Miranda Simmons. So just what do the judges look for? “We’re looking for pirates, and the more the better,” said Jenny Gordon. “After that, our main goal is to seek out boats and crew who best embody the spirit and enthusiasm for this children’s charity event. Some people spend weeks decorating their boats. Others wear really creative homemade costumes. Boats have been decorated with skeletons hanging on for dear life, treasure chests bursting at the seams with glittering booty and threatening – but non-functioning -- cannons. At Holiday Marina, the card crew included some familiar faces from the early days of the event. Debbie Williams, wife of the late Rea Williams, handed out playing cards with Steve Damus, one of the original members of Lanier Partners. Damus also emceed the Friday night silent auction at the Captain’s meeting. “We raised some pretty good money Friday night,” Damus PHOTO BY PAMELA A. Have a foot stomping good time at vineyard harvest fests 38 LAKESIDE
By Jane Harrison Folks will be stomping feet and smashing grapes in the hills north of Lake Lanier late this month as vineyards celebrate the harvest. More than 25 wineries dot the North Georgia mountains where clusters of Merlot, Cabernet and Viognier are ripening in the August sun. In Georgia wine country, vines spread from as far north as Blairsville through Dahlonega and westward into Ellijay. As of late July, vintners would not speculate about the potential abundance of this year’s crop. Regardless of the harvest, loads of fun are about to be uncorked at four wineries with harvest festivals coming up. And in case you’re wondering, the grapes stomped underfoot never make it into a bottle. “That would be gross,” a winery hostess declared. Squishing grapes is merely a messy ceremonial recreation. Yonah Mountain Vineyard Crush Fest Want some accordion with your wine? Get that, plus food truck fare, crafts and more at the 10th Annual Crush Fest at the Cleveland vineyard. Owners Bob and Jane Miller, accordion player and guitarist respectively, will be among the musicians serenading grape stompers near the foot of Yonah Mountain. Attendees can bare their feet and step into big vats to dance upon the grapes. Winery spokesperson Jennifer Green said most activities will take place

outdoors at the elegant winery with a large covered patio and spectacular views of the vines and mountain. The tradition attracts more than 5,000 people from around the Southeast, Green said. The day-long festival includes hourly performances from the owners, the Crush Fest Drumline and Atlanta Pipe Band, plus crafts for sale by 10 regional and national artists. • Admission: $40 per person, includes four 3-ounce wine tastings and a souvenir glass, plus all activities. • When: 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Aug. 24 • Where: 1717 Hwy. 255 S., Cleveland Kaya Vineyard & Winery Spirit of Harvest Festival Bluegrass music and barbecue pair well with wine at this rustic countryside vineyard, formerly the home of Blackstock Vineyard outside of Dahlonega. Tasting
room manager Katie Trammel expects the crew will haul plenty of grapes up to the crush pad for lots of squishy fun. “It’s been a great season so far with just the amount of rain,” she said in mid-July. “But you never know” what might happen in the weeks before picking time. Food options include salads, panini, sandwiches and meat and cheese plates from the winery’s dining room. Educational discussions and a trivia contest round out the day. • Admission: $20, includes five tasting tickets, souvenir glass, grape stomping, and educational preview of harvest season. When: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 31 Where: 5400 Town Creek Rd., Dahlonega
Visitors take the tour at Kaya Vineyards.
Paradise Hills Vineyard & Winery Grape Stomp Fest Grape stompers go solo in mini-wine barrel containers, one person per barrel, on the wine patio with gorgeous views of nearby ridges. Live music, vendors, a kids’ tent, and “Lucy Look-Alike” contest bring an eclectic mix to the mountains. Guests can step from the barrel onto paper to put their footprints on a souvenir poster, said hostess/manager Ilke Lander. Admission: $25, includes tastings, souvenir glass When: 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Aug. 31; grape stomping 2 and 4 p.m. Where: 366 Paradise Rd., Blairsville Cartecay Vineyards Crush Festival Move over apple trees, there’s another fruit growing in the Cartecay River basin near Ellijay. Cartecay Vineyard put vines in the ground about a decade ago, becoming the first wine-making venture in apple orchard territory. The site’s original 1890s-era stone chimney rises from a patio and covered stage overlooking the vines near the twostory wood barn tasting room. The winery celebrates the harvest with two days of live music, local craft sales, food truck barbecue, and wine tasting. Guests can crush the grapes in wooden half barrels. Winery manager Alease Purdy recommends touring the vineyard with the See Vineyards, page 52

When it’s too hot to garden, plan your plot 42 LAKESIDE
August 2019
The summer doldrums have struck. Your flowers are showing effects of the heat, and unless you’ve been able to water regularly, they may also look a bit piqued. It’s just too hot to spend much time in the garden. And besides, it’s summer, so if you’re going to be outdoors, at least head to the lake, the pool or the mountains. Keep cool inside and take some time to read the latest gardening books, especially those that may challenge your knowledge and provide great ideas for later this year or even for next year’s garden. Some of the newest titles from Quarto Publishing Group can easily entice you to try new gardening techniques. Most are full-color, soft-cover books filled with projects, tips and new ways of approaching gardening. Here are some of the latest offerings from Quarto, available on the company’s website, www.quartoknow.com, Amazon, or at major book retailers. DIY Hydroponic Gardens, Tyler Baras. Learn how to grow plants in water with tips, plans for systems and recipes for the nutrient solutions to support the

Especially if you live and garden near Lake Lanier, organic gardening can help reduce contamination of the water sources while growing high-quality food. Avoid fertilizers, insecticides and man-made pollutants by learning about true organic and natural gardening. Gardener’s Guide to Compact Plants, Jessica Walliser. Do you have limited space for gardening? Check out this guide to the latest in compact plants and how to use them in your landscape. From column-shaped trees
and dwarf shrubs to mini vegetables and shorter perennials, you can create a big impact in your landscape. Mastering the Art of Vegetable Gardening, Matt Mattus. Explore this hard-cover book that offers insight into multiple varieties of popular edibles, from artichokes and parsley to asparagus and potatoes. Think about trying some cool-season crops with tips in this book, such as lettuces, brussels sprouts and cabbages. No-Waste Kitchen Gardening, Katie Elzer-Peters. Did you know that you can regrow celery, green onions and lettuce from the base of the plants you’d ordinarily throw away? You can also harvest seeds from vegetables for the next season. Learn how with this easy to read book and stretch your food budget while becoming an innovative gardener. Vertical Vegetables, Amy Andrychowicz. Grow more vegetables in less space with information in this book that teaches you how to build functioning trellises, construct wall-hanging gardens or other upcycled everyday objects. In addition to the how-to, the book provides lists of the best
plants to grow vertically. Vegetables Love Flowers, Lisa Mason Ziegler. Companion plantings of flowers and vegetables can create healthier growing conditions by encouraging pollinators and deterring common garden insects. But this book also tells you how to grow the best garden in your climate and which plants to pair for optimal results.
Any of these books can help you beat the heat while cultivating your green thumb in the airconditioned comfort of home. And they’ll inspire you to stretch your gardening skills and have garden-fresh produce all year long. Pamela A. Keene is senior writer for Lakeside News and a Hall County Master Gardener.

Now trending: re-designing and remodeling bathrooms August 2019
LAKESIDE 53
As a design-build firm, we continue to see lots of clients looking to re-design and remodel bathrooms this year. From timeless materials to new cabinet colors and room layouts, clients are looking to update their bathroom spaces to make them both more beautiful and more functional. One of the trends that we’re continuing to see from fixture manufacturers is matte finishes. Whether it be matte black or matte gold (yes, gold is back!), these colors help bring a modern elegance to a space. With a light backdrop, stylish black fixtures are sleek and modern; and matte gold, also known as champagne bronze, is a far cry from the shiny brass most people are trying desperately to get away from. If you’re brave enough, you can even mix finishes; black and chrome work great together, while dark bronze and champagne together provide an updated traditional look. Another trend we’re seeing is warmer wood accents. Of course, the most popular place we see this is in cabinetry; a stained finish on a modern door style gives a sleek, updated look. We also see wood accents in the form of teak in

showers, including shower seats, stools, or bathmats. You can bring in the wood look in the form of floor tile, as well. With simple modern style on the rise, the preference is moving toward more natural finishes and materials with clean lines. One thing I encourage clients to be open to are unique vanity mirrors and lighting. These items can really make a statement and help define the style of the space. There are practically an infinite number of options out there so look to a design professional to guide you to the correct size and look to balance your space. Gone are the plate-glass, builder-grade mirrors and in are mirrors that make a statement. Also out are
the matchy-matchy mirrors that are the same color as your vanity. In terms of lighting, you don’t have to just stick to above-mirror vanity lights. There are single sconces, as well as pendants that can help frame your vanity area, and if you have a large enough space, don’t be afraid to bring in a small chandelier in the center of the room for something unique. For tile, marble- and concretelooks continue to be popular. Marble is not recommended for bathrooms because of its porosity and high maintenance. But manufacturers have created porcelain tile that looks like marble so you can get the same elegant effect. Porcelain tile manufacturers have also mastered re-creating the concrete look tile, for a more modern or industrial look. Again, these go back to the popularity of nature and incorporating natural, or natural-looking, materials. Gray continues to be a popular color in 2019. Many lovely tones of gray pair nicely with light bathrooms and matte black accents. Although, we’ve been seeing some of the colder grays decline, while warmer grays and taupes are on the rise. These warm grays can be used in tile choice, as well

as cabinetry or wall color. More and more designers are including artful sinks in bathroom renovations. These sinks provide unique shapes and designs, adding a striking focal point in a small area, and this includes both vessel and undermount. Just like lighting and tile, there are many more great options for sinks out there. Kohler is especially great at creating beautiful pieces, whether that be a handpainted vessel sink or a subtly patterned undermount sink. In addition to material trends, we also are seeing trends in terms of bathing needs. More and more people are removing their bulky garden or jetted tubs from their master bath and replacing them with large, tiled showers. I hear all the time from people who use their large tubs for storage or washing the family dog instead of actual baths. For those that do still enjoy taking a bath, they are replacing the old standard tubs
with freestanding soaking tubs or air massage tubs. Air massage technology uses forced air to create a milder jacuzzi effect without the tubes and drainage of the oldstyle jets for a much more sanitary and easy-to-maintain system. When it comes to a bathroom remodel, everyone’s style and needs are different. Some are looking for simply an updated, but still timeless, look while others need space that’s more functional. It’s ideal to work with a designer or design-build remodeler when re-doing a bathroom to maximize the space you have and come up with ideas that you maybe hadn’t considered. which, in turn, can have devastating effects on fish stocks and drinking-water.” CRK’s nutrient monitoring program has been approved by the Georgia Environmental Protection Division, which uses the data to make regulatory decisions. The data has helped the state determine that Lanier is not currently meeting state water quality standards, and as a result, the state was required to develop an action plan in accordance with the nation’s federal Clean Water Act. This plan includes a mandated reduction in phosphorus loading into Lanier from permitted wastewater treatment facilities, as well as developing initiatives to reduce non-point source stormwater runoff. Riverkeeper’s work has also resulted in municipalities investing millions of dollars to improve sewage plants around the lake. Neighborhood Water Watch Each week more than a dozen volunteers and interns visit more than 30 sites to sample water in the Chattahoochee River, creeks that flow into Lanier and in the lake including several beach sites. Samples from the headwaters re-

gion are brought to the Gainesville office where they are tested. The tests measure pollutants including e. coli, conductivity and turbidity. If levels are found to be high, then CRK staff work to track the source of pollution. Siltation, Soil Erosion, Sedimentation and Stormwater Runoff Soil erosion can also affect water quality in Lanier. From wave action along the shoreline to increased building and development, excess soil flows into the lake reducing water quality and property values for those who live on the lake. “Sedimentation is one of the biggest threats to the health of our waterways, and laws are in
place that require proper measures are taken to reduce the amount of sediment leaving construction sites,” Caldwell said. “Part of the work of the headwaters office is to ensure that construction sites are in compliance, by regularly monitoring and patrolling these developments. CRK’s work in this area has resulted in state enforcement actions, improved construction practices, and buffer protections at sites that would otherwise have a significant negative impact on Lanier.” Georgia’s Erosion and Sedimentation Control Act restricts land disturbance within 25 feet of creeks, rivers, streams and most lakes and ponds. works with the local governments and the Georgia EPD to identify violations and ensure enforcement and restoration along the streams that flow into Lanier. How you can get involved “From attending events to volunteering, there are many ways to become involved in the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper,” Warner said. “The headwaters office is an integral part of the Chattahoochee Riverkeeper that has members, stakeholders and constituents along the full 435 miles of the river, from its beginnings in north Georgia down to the Apalachicola River.”
Members can participate in any of the Riverkeepers events, cleanups or projects. They also receive e-blasts and the bi-annual RiverChat newsletter as well as a decal for their car or boat. “Memberships also support the Riverkeeper’s work to ensure clean water in the community,” Caldwell said, “providing ways to become involved in being good environmental stewards.” Membership starts at $35 for individuals and $50 for a dual membership. Senior and student memberships cost $15. For more info, visit Chattahoochee.org or call at 678-696-8866.

Poker Run novices travel from Alabama By Pamela A. Keene Mark and Tammy Echols were Pirates of Lanier Poker Run newbies on Friday afternoon before the 11th annual event at Lanier Islands. But the couple from Alabama didn’t waste any time fitting right in and discovering the assets of Lake Lanier. “It’s been great so far and this is a beautiful lake,” said Mark right before the Friday night Captain’s Meeting. “The hospitality has been amazing and we’re very impressed with all that’s going on here at Lanier Islands. Everything is right here at your fingertips.” The couple who lives in Ohatchee, Ala., on Lake Henry Neeley, brought their 30-foot cuddy cabin cruising boat to get their feet wet during their first Lanier Poker Run. “We’ve got a
couple of boats, but I brought the one the wife likes because it doesn’t go so fast.” The Echols’ son Colton and daughter Carley brought two friends, so the six of them were planning to enjoy all the festivities of the weekend. Mark and Jennifer heard about the Pirates of Lanier Poker Run from some neighbors near their beach place. “They told us we’d better come up here and do this fun event,” he said. “We’re all about charities, fundraising and helping people, so it just sounded like a really good idea.” They took a low-key approach to decorating their boat or wearing costumes. “Since it’s our first time, we’re trying to learn all we can,” he said. “But next year we’ll know more about what to
BOATING
do.” Seems like Mark already had some pretty good insight. “I’ve already bought six poker hands and I’ll probably buy some more.” When asked what he’d do if they won this year, Mark said, “I guess we’ll be doing a little shopping.” The Echols didn’t win any booty this year, but they’re not discouraged. “We just packed up on Sunday and drove back to sweet home Alabama,” Mark said. “But we’ll be back probably in about a month without the boat because we really like it here. We’re already planning to come to next year’s poker run. I think I’ll bring a faster boat next year. And we’re going to bring more friends, too.”

astic and supportive, as they always are.” As for Williams, “Rea would have been so proud at this year’s event,” she said. “Everyone was really here for the spirit of the event and very focused on the real reason we do this every year – for the PHOTO BY PAMELA A. KEENE kids.” Debbie Williams and Steve Damus.

A beautiful waterfall with a tragic history 58 LAKESIDE
From below the misty cascade of water free-falling 186 feet into a deep pool that empties into a tiny stream lined with colorful wild azaleas and rhododendron, one would never imagine the dark side of this picturesque natural wonder. Nevertheless, in the wee hours of a rainy night on November 6, 1977, an earthen dam at the top of this breathtaking waterfall gave way, and 176 million gallons of water plummeted into the tiny valley below that is home to Toccoa Falls College. Thirty-nine people were killed, another 60 injured. Most of the college campus was destroyed. Compassionate people from all over the world, who had never heard of Toccoa or the tiny Christian college, responded immediately with their money and their hearts. More than $3 million in funds and hundreds of volunteer workers poured into the little valley to help. Because of that tragedy, the dam and lake were never rebuilt, and every effort has been made to allow Toccoa Falls to return to its natural state. It is 29 feet higher than Niagara Falls and truly one of the most magnificent waterfalls in the “Peach State.” It certainly lives up to the name given by the Cherokee Indians, “Toc-

coah,” which means “beautiful.” Toccoa Falls is within the city limits of Toccoa, Ga. and on the campus of Toccoa Falls College, which is a four-year, fully accredited Christian liberal arts college. It was originally founded in 1907 by Dr. Richard Forrest and his wife in Golden Valley, N.C., which was a remote area only reachable by horse and wagon. The Forrests soon realized that if the college was to grow, it needed to be located closer to major transportation lines. They searched and eventually found the perfect place near the booming town of Toccoa in a picturesque setting of the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. In order to view the falls, visi-
tors must pass through the Toccoa Falls Gift Shop en route to a path lined with colorful flowers, conversational benches, cool breezes and gorgeous natural surroundings that leads about 100 yards to the falls. This trek follows a babbling brook that continues flowing beyond the welcome center through the lower part of the wooded campus of the college. Additionally, the Gate Cottage Restaurant overlooking Toccoa Creek is used for weddings, rehearsals and receptions. It also caters to many civic clubs, organizational meetings, business luncheons and other special events. For more information, call 706-886-6831. The light passing through water that almost changes to an eerie mist before being consumed by the pool below has prism-like qualities that seem to hypnotize those who watch. Therefore, any visit to Toccoa or the almost 100 year-old college would be incomplete without spending a few memorable minutes gazing up at this miracle of nature called Toccoa Falls! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide. Clockwise from top right:
