At a special place in the northeastern headwaters of Lake Lanier, rushing water once turned a wheel to grind corn as moonshiners wheeled by on a narrow winding river road to escape the law. For the past 50 years, potters have thrown clay on wheels at The Mark of the Potter located on the Soque River in Habersham County. Conference Center at Lanier Islands moves another step closer to reality By Pamela A. Keene Building a new conference center at Lanier Islands has taken another step toward reality. The second phase of research and study is expected to be presented to the board of the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority in the coming weeks. “The LLIDA board authorized $695,000 for additional study in Phase II, and that will determine concepts of what the project may look like,” said Bill Donohue, executive director of authority that oversees the operation of Lanier Islands on behalf of the state of Georgia. The first phase, which began in mid-2018 at a cost of $185,000, included market evaluation, research and feasibility, as well as the financial ramifications and economic impact of building a new conference center at Lanier Islands. Once that research was reviewed, the LLIDA board authorized further study to determine the building’s plan and scope. “We expect a report from the contractors that will include concepts of what the building might look like, including number of
rooms, the amount of meeting space, parking and other amenities,” Donahue said. “One of the deliverables will be an estimated price tag for the project.” The proposed new conference center is expected to replace the former PineIsle Resort which opened in 1974. That property was demolished in 2008, three years after it was closed by its most recent operator, Marriott. Virgil Williams and Lake Lanier Islands Management Company took over the lease and management of Lanier Islands in 2005. The company holds a 50-year lease. In these early stages, there is no specific timetable for completion, which will be dependent on a number of factors including securing funding and approvals by the Corps of Engineers and other government entities. The proposed new conference
center is expected to bring additional economic impact to Lake Lanier, Hall County, Northeast Georgia and the state when it is completed. However, there is no specific timetable for the project. Donohue said he and the LLIDA board members are hopeful that the conference center will become a reality.
“It’s moving along at a good timeline and the contractors have been doing great work,” Donohue said. “The project has been received with a great deal of interest and enthusiasm.” The next meeting of the Lake Lanier Islands Development Authority is scheduled for June 14, at Legacy Lodge at Lanier Islands.

Special Master has other legal callings, Florida and Georgia wait
By Jane Harrison The senior federal judge overseeing the near 6-year-old Florida v. Georgia lawsuit over water apparently has other legal callings. While Florida and Georgia awaited Special Master Judge Paul J. Kelly, Jr.’s response to a March 12 request for oral arguments, the judge heard at least three cases in Albuquerque and Roswell, NM. Kelly, age 78, 26-year judge on the U.S. 10th Circuit Court of Appeals in Kelly Santa Fe, sat in on and issued orders with other justices in an appeal of a drug conspiracy case April 25, an immigration appeal May 6, and fourth amendment violation case May 13. Summaries of the cases appeared in an opinions archive from late April through mid-May on the appellate court’s website. As of May 20, Kelly's most recent order on the Florida v. Georgia docket appeared March 22, basically an address list for efiling case documents. The long-running lawsuit stems from Florida’s accusation in Oct. 2013 that Georgia uses more than its share of water from a river basin that flows from the Georgia mountains to the Florida panhan-
dle. Lake Lanier is the largest reservoir on the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system that is regulated by U.S. Corps of Engineers dams. Kelly, known for straight-forwardness and punctually, was appointed Special Master last August after Supreme Court justices asked him to take over after they remanded the recommendations of former appointee Ralph Lancaster. In the months that followed, Kelly told states’ attorneys he already had enough evidence to decide the case, but asked them to answer specific questions. He left open the possibility for brief oral arguments. After states submitted findings, supplemental briefs and rebuttals, Florida asked Kelly for a chance to argue its case. The public docket showed no response from Georgia or Kelly by late May. The docket also offers no hint at why there is an apparent delay. Since he is a federal judge, Kelly’s pay as special master is covered by the federal government, rather than Florida and Georgia. However, both states still must pay their own attorneys for time spent on the case. Each has spent in excess of $40 million in the on-going litigation.

A spinner bait, a Lanier Baits 3.5 Swimmer, and even some top water have been productive, and of course a worm. The Georgia Blade Spinnerbait on shallow rock has remained good for us in recent days in the wind, as has swimming a Lanier Baits 3.5 Swimmer on a 1/8 pound jig head. The fish we are catching remain shallow in most cases focus on 15 feet and less. Points, humps, rocks, docks, all have fish on them. When the fish aren’t chasing, the worm on a shaky head is hard to beat. A whacky rigged Senkos is also a good option in the worm category. For our sportfish, it’s all about water temperatures, so the bite will follow the water temps, which follow air temps. We now start the transition to summer mode. We have some hot weather moving in now, which should push a lot of lake fish off the banks and into slightly deeper and cooler water. If we are lucky, we’ll get some cooler days in the weeks ahead, which will slow down this transition to summer and extend our excellent spring fishing opportunities. Our trout streams are still holding out real well, thanks to the cool nights. Also, with the cessation of heavy rains, many of the largest streams have now dropped to safer levels for wading and fishing. Antiques market celebrates 16 year anniversary Lakewood 400 Antiques Market, which attracts thousands of shoppers each month from across the Southeast, is celebrating its 16th anniversary this month. Spider Diaper prevents boat messes

Keene A call from a marina in Oklahoma more than a dozen years ago opened a whole new line of product offerings for Shade Tree Fabrics, a Georgia company specializing in shade cloth for the agricultural and horticultural industry. “When I got the call, I never even realized that people would have problems with spider droppings on their boats in slips,” said Jimmy Harris, owner of Shade Tree Fabrics, which now sells Spider Diaper across the country. “(The caller) described the problem, then we sent the marina some sample weights and thicknesses to find the best product for them. And since that time, we’ve been selling Spider Diapers to boat owners across the country.” The custom-made product is mounted below the roof of boat slips and catches debris and droppings before it falls onto boats and docks. It’s owner-installed. “We are hearing that some people are using poison to control the issue, but we understand that it is illegal to use poisons on the lake,” Harris said. “This is a safe alternative to ridding your boat and dock from spider droppings.” The product has a seven-year warranty against UV damage from the sun. Vision 2030 continues to expand, bring art to public spaces
By Pamela A. Keene Gainesville artist Mary Frances Hull has a heart of gold – and china and glass and tile. Her latest work, a large-scale mosaic entitled “Heart and Soul” now graces a wall on the lower level of the parking deck in Gainesville’s Downtown Square Commercial District as part of the Greater Hall Chamber of Commerce’s Vision 2030. It was installed in April. Made from bits of recycled fine china, glass and other recycled items, “Heart and Soul” is 8 feet high and 8 feet long. Paisleyshaped pieces featuring owls, chickens, fish and other subjects capture glittering images that combined make a heart-shaped piece of public art. The project was funded through a gift by Allen and Meg Nivens to the Public Art Fund of the North Georgia Community Foundation. “This project was years in the making, with intricate designs on each of the pieces,” said the artist-in-residence at the Quinlan Visual Art Center in Gainesville. “It’s created by a special mosaic technique called pique assiette, which originated in France. Using broken ceramics, including cups, plates, tiles and found objects, the term pique translates to ‘to snag,’ ‘to filch,’ or ‘to snatch away.’ The pieces are used to create a picture.” Hull is known around the

Hull teaches mosaics and pottery art classes at the Quinlan Visual Arts Center and works with both children and adults. She is a founding member and coordinator of the ReHatched Art Market at the Spring Chicken Festival. She has created programs specifically for at-risk children and teens through her work with Avita Community Partners, the Gainesville Housing Authority Innovation Station, the Boys and Girls Club and the YMCA. Mary is also a “Healing through the Arts” Instructor helping patients with Alzheimer’s disease at the Guest House in Gainesville. Vision 2030’s public art project has catalogued and/or installed more than 250 works. An immigrant’s odyssey from Constantinople to the American dream My Armenian grandfather was born in Constantinople (now Istanbul), Turkey in the 1870s. When he was about 14 years old, the Turks were systematically eliminating the Armenian population by killing off all the men and boys and selling the women into harems (yeah, it really happened, check it out!). They escaped on foot and after a chase ran up the gangway of an English ship, hoping for sanctuary. The Turks wanted to come and take the boys, but the British captain would not allow them on board. The cops went back for reinforcements and the captain simply cast off the dock lines and put to sea! In the 1880s there was no such thing as radio or modern patrol boats to chase them. Haik and his friend thanked their rescuers and became part of the crew. They assumed that they were going to England on the “Boyd of London.” To their surprise, they were headed to New York. They were put to work in the galley and peeled so many potatoes that

Papa swore he’d never eat one again! The first stop was Gibraltar and the ship’s Purser jumped ship as soon as they docked. The Captain asked Papa if he could do “cyphers” (arithmetic) and he said “of course.” Papa had been educated in a German Military Academy, so he was good at math, and spoke several languages. He gladly left the potato peels and became the new Purser. When the ship docked in Brooklyn several weeks later, he was listed as “ship’s crew” rather than “immigrant” and thus he never came through Ellis Island. He decided to stay on in New York City. He got a job and became a US Citizen. Men worked six days and got Sunday off back then. Each Sunday, Papa would take a street car out to the shore and hang out at a
yacht club in Brooklyn. There happened to be a sunken boat in one of the slips, and someone said “Hey Haik, you want a boat? Get this thing to float and it’s yours.” Taking the challenge, he got his buddies together and raised the old skiff off the bottom! He gradually disassembled the engine and smuggled it piece by piece back to his rooming house in a suitcase. Over the winter he rebuilt the engine. The following summer after work every Saturday, Haik and his crew would motor his boat 15 miles across lower New York Bay and up the Shrewsbury River to camp out on the beach. As they passed by the hills of Highlands, NJ, he would point up to them and tell his friends how they reminded him of his family home on the Bosporus in Constantinople. He said that one day he would own a house on top of the hill with property running all the way down to the river. They all scoffed at him for having such an unattainable dream, but they enjoyed the weekend trips down to the shore. Papa worked in a new science/art called Photo Engraving in its earliest days. In the 1880s
this was tantamount to designing computers in the 1960s. He gradually worked his way up and wound up owning the company and starting up several other businesses. Eventually he built his “house on top of the hill with property running all the way down to the river.” This is where my mother was born, and I was raised. Papa died at age 102. He was sitting at his desk giving dictation to his secretary with a cigar in his hand. It slumped down on his lap and his secretary thought he had fallen asleep. She took the cigar out of his hand and realized that he was dead. Papa had outlived three wives. He had five children, and countless grand, great-grand and greatgreat-grandchildren. He left $25,000 to each of his kids, $5,000 to each of the rest of us and $21 million to the Armenian church! Now this was the 1970s, when $21 million was real money!
When my mother and all her brothers and sisters wanted to contest the will, I asked her, “Mom, how much money you got? The Armenian Church has $21 million to hire the best lawyers in New York, and you want to fight that?” Papa was totally lucid up to the very end and he knew exactly what he was doing. What he left us is in our genes, not in a bank account. I’m just happy to be remembered and all I’ve got to say is “Thank you, Papa.” I think of him often especially when I’m out at sea or on the lake, using the natural motion of the wind and water to get me where I want to go. We all have to play the cards that we’re dealt and make the best of it. Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. His favorite line: “You can’t make this stuff up.”

Wondering what kind of summer is ahead
Spring is just about over and summer is just beyond the horizon. The summer solstice is Friday, June 21st at 11:54 a.m. As far as spring weather, I think we did rather well. We did have several low end tornadoes causing minor damage along with some minor flooding due to heavy rain and runoff. We are heading into summer with a healthy surplus of rain and a full lake. Our long-range models are showing a continuation of above average temperatures. However, there seem to be too many variables in play to determine potential rainfall. The Climate Prediction Center is giving a 50/50 chance of above or below average rainfall for the summer. Even in this month there are too many variables to give anything else but a 50/50 chance of above or below normal rain. With a prediction of hotter weather, there will be a concern for a lot of evaporation from Lake Lanier if the rains don’t come on a regular basis. How much evaporation? It’s a tough question given all the variables in play but let’s take a closer look at what happens in a typical swimming pool. Normally pools lose about a quarter to half inch of water per day due evaporation. That would equate to roughly losing 2-4 inches of
water per week. For an average size pool, that could be about 30,000 to Glenn 50,000 gallons per year. Burns You can imagine how much water we could lose in Lake Lanier, Lanier which is 38,000 acres Outlook and 59 square miles of water! If it turns out we don’t have our average monthly rainfall for June of 3.94 inches, July usually comes through. July is the wettest month of the year for north Georgia. We average 5.28 inches. Remember the rainfall outlook can’t be determined because of too many variables. We could end of with very little rain or maybe a lot. Since 1996, we’ve seen as little as half inch for the entire month. That was in the year 2008. However, we also seen as much as nine and a half inches of rain, which occurred in 2013. So, we wait and see. As far as temperatures are concerned, the average high in June is 86. With an above average temperature prediction, that means we’ll likely be in the 90s. Might want to get the old A/C tuned up. It may be working overtime this month. June is always a fun month. The water temperatures warm up enough for a comfortable swim. C.A.S.T. for Kids/Lanier seeks boats, captains for fishing event

Keene Building on its success last year, C.A.S.T. for Kids/Lanier is seeking boats and captains for its 2019 event, slated for August 10. “We would like to introduce up to 40 youngsters with special needs to our program and fishing this year,” said Laurie Morgan, who helped her son Jackson Morgan, now 14, create the North Georgia event as part of a school project. “Last year we had 28 kids and 28 volunteer captains, so we’re increasing that number for 2019.” C.A.S.T. for Kids is a national initiative of the C.A.S.T. for Kids Foundation that, according to its mission, “enriches the lives of children with special needs, supports their families, and strengthens communities through the sport of fishing.” The program on Lake Lanier is managed by volunteers. Morgan starts early to recruit volunteer boats and captains. “You don’t have to know how to fish,” she said. “We have volunteer fishing guides who go on the boats with the kids and a parent, plus another helper from our group.” The organization provides bait, tackle, life jackets and other items for participants. Following a morning of fishing and prizes,
lunch is provided for the volunteers by the Georgia Barbecue Association. Other funds are provided through donations. “Many of these youngsters have never been fishing and may have never even been on a boat,” she said. “It is so rewarding to work with them and see the joy on their faces as they fish.” The young anglers come from various organizations around Northeast Georgia, including Miracle League Baseball, Jacob’s Ladder and Extra Special People. “Truly, you don’t need to be a fisherman and you can bring your pontoon or cruiser or any boat that can accommodate the kids, their guide, helper and parent,”
Morgan said. “The most important thing is that we have our captains lined up and committed by the end of June or early July so that we know how many participants we can invite.” Morgan asks that boat captains register at www.castforkids.org (search for Lanier event) or call her at 678 852-4957 or email her at lmorgan624@aol.com for more information by early July at the latest. “The objective is to help kids with disabilities know that they can accomplish anything,” she said. “This is a wonderful way to become involved in a worthwhile community program and spend a day on the lake.”

One of the biggest misconceptions by inexperienced boat drivers is that the vessel will act like a vehicle on a roadway. That may be true in some aspects, as if driving on ice or a slippery surface, but that’s where the resemblance abruptly ends. Comprehending how your craft reacts under all conditions is a sign of good seamanship and remarkably increases boating safety. There is a remedy – a control point to Advance and Transfer – that is so easy to master, all operators can perform this action effectively. It is mandated in the USCG Rules of the Road in various sections, with the most profound being: Rule 8 – Action to Avoid Collision. Keene When Joanna Cloud announced that she was stepping down as executive director of the Lake Lanier Association in late April, new board president John Barker knew what he had to do. “After I had about a three-day pity party for myself and the association that Joanna was leaving, I realized that we needed to immediately start our search for a new executive director,” Barker said. “I have just become president and the association has recently undergone some organizational restructuring, so we sprang into action.” In short order, the board received nearly 50 applications, mostly from people who live in Northeast Georgia. Barker and the search committee spent much of May culling through resumes and narrowing the field to less than a half dozen for further faceto-face interviews. “The candidates we’re looking at are excellent,” Barker said. “We hope to have someone in place by July 1, which is a pretty aggressive schedule, but it’s very doable.”
The board is also undergoing a bit of reorganization, announced at the April annual meeting by then-president Wilton Rooks. Barker explained that the new structure is intended to decentralize many of the functions and programs of the group. “We have created four vice president positions and grouped related functions under their leadership,” he said. “This will help streamline communications and reporting within the organization.” The new vice presidents and their areas of responsibility are Billy Powell, administration and staff, handling financial and administrative duties; Sheila Davis, marketing, to oversee membership, communications, advertising and social media; Rich York, operations, to oversee on-the-lake initiatives such as Shore Sweep, the islands’ rip-rap installation, abandoned and derelict docks and vessels; and Mike Berg, political action, building relationships with key influencers and overseeing the group’s legislative initiatives. Budapest: A safe, beautiful European destination

In the past few years, most European cities have thrown their borders wide open to a mass migration of people with questionable character and extremely different culture from the war torn Middle East. Hungary, however, has been able to maintain their unique traditions by carefully screening the masses with strict immigration laws. Therefore, Budapest is today one of the most beautiful and safest destinations for tourists to visit in Europe. The old Hungarian city of Budapest can take you back to medieval times with a simple turn of the head. One can easily walk to many of the most interesting historical places like the Margarate Bridge that was partly designed by the famous French architect, Gustave Eiffel, the Palatinus Buildings, the Lánczy House, the Haggenmacher House, and the Mahler House, where Gustav Mahler lived when he directed at the Opera House. Only a stone’s throw away stands the Western Railway Station where Gustave Eiffel’s name can still be seen on the iron columns of the glass hall. This area also offers evening entertainment, restaurants, pubs and coffee shops. Probably the most famous of these is the New York Coffee House, which is considered one of the most beautiful coffee houses in Europe. The Parlament, the St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Opera are all within walking distance. The first settlement along the Danube at Budapest was around the time of the birth of Christ. Later the Romans came and built roads, baths and numerous other buildings. They were then defeated by the Bulgarians who built the fortress cities of Buda and Pest on each side of the river. The Hungarians finally captured

the area around the 9th century, but didn’t join Buda and Pest until 1873. To really enjoy any visit to Budapest, walk down to the Danube on the Pest side and follow the promenade along the river to the Chain Bridge, then take the walkway on the bridge across to the Buda side. Buy a ticket for the tram that is to the left of the tunnel. This unique vehicle travels to the top of Gellert Hill on a 48 percent grade for about the distance of a football field and affords you one of the most picturesque panoramas in the world! The tiny side streets in the Castle District give a feeling of going back to the Middle Ages. Hidden courtyards, beautifully restored houses and colorful coat of arms along the way. All major streets in the Castle District meet at Holy Trinity Square which is right in front of the Matthias Church. In ancient times, this square was the main marketplace and the site of many public executions. That anything survived after World War II is amazing ... considering the devastating air raids by Allied bombers during 1944 and 1945, and the Russian bombardment and siege of the city in early 1945. became a communist people’s republic in 1949, the government viewed buildings in the Buda Castle District as symbols of the former regime and destroyed most of them. Despite all the wars and devastation throughout history, Budapest is still one of the most photographic cities in Europe. The Pest side of the Danube River is fairly flat and houses most modern commercial growth, while Buda contains the treasures of the past, including the royal history of the Hungarian people. The two cites joined become the phenomenal mixture of past and present known throughout the world as – Budapest! Keene Four engineering brothers, a handful of college students and inspiration from an inventive father are the impetus behind Ottodock, a fully autonomous dock management system that will soon be in beta testing on Lake Lanier. When network engineer Tom Torre and his family moved to Lake Lanier in 2016, he was plagued by consistently low lake levels that prohibited enjoyment of the lake, resulting in constantly manually moving his dock. Eighteen months later, winter rains drove lake levels up, and up and he was faced with keeping his ramp above water. “After a year of pushing the dock in and out, it was time to in-

Imagine a senior citizen being able to move a dock with the push of a button, or part-time lake dwellers remotely controlling their dock from anywhere at any time. Guests can choose from three fresh fish entrees each week, plus salmon, chicken, prime rib and other specials. Opened on Memorial Day weekend, it will continue through the summer. “Our goal is to provide an excellent assortment of seafood focusing on what’s fresh,” said Chef Michael Klein, culinary director for Lanier Islands. “We are creating specials that will change from week to week in addition to popular items like our steamed snow crab legs and spicy Cajun peel and eat boiled shrimp.” Some of the newer items include mussels with pasta in a hand-crafted wine sauce, shrimp scampi and dry-rubbed St. Louisstyle ribs. The Sidney’s fresh salad choices include cole slaw, potato salad, smoked salmon and handcut seasonal fruit. Freshly prepared vegetables supplement the entrée selections. The biggest question about having our house painted turned out to be really simple. My husband Rick said he’d do it, but I convinced him that hiring a professional would save time and an immense amount of wear and tear on Rick and his ladders. After chatting with friends and putting the word out on Next Door, a crowd-sourced localized website, I called three contractors based on recommendations. That’s about right for a home improvement project. Rick and I agreed that price was a secondary consideration to having a good fit with the contractor. Turns out that the “survival of the fittest” approach helped make our decision for us. The first contractor we called took two days to even return my phone call. Then his subcontractor showed up late and seemed rather disinterested in spending time to assess the job. I had to call three times afterward to get a written estimate. The second contractor, recommended by a friend in my former subdivision, called back promptly, set up a time for the free estimate a few days later and

even showed up a little early. Already a great sign as far as I was concerned. The third contractor took three days to return my call, set up a time several days later, then called at the last minute to ask for a postponement until two days later. He said he had worked all day and the traffic was too bad for him to show up that day. Mickey Mitchell of Red Letter Painting, www.redletterpainting. com, who sent his estimate when he said he would, got the job, not just because he was the only contractor who responded. From the minute he stepped on our property I knew, even without reviewing his estimate, that I wanted to hire his company.
His promptness was just part of the reason. He explained his process, from pressure washing not only the siding but also the patio and decks to removing the downspouts of our gutters to explaining that his crew would be draping landscape plants next to the house to avoid any damage from ladders. Mickey’s estimate arrived by email when he said it would and it included details of services to be provided. After we agreed with the cost, he kept in touch with us by text and phone about when he scheduled the job. He told us he’d arrive on a Monday around 8 a.m. and actually got here around 7:30 to start prepping, clearing our decks and patio of furniture and thoroughly pressure washing over the next couple of days. As the job progressed, they caulked, cleaned the gutters, removed the downspouts to be painted, then either removed or taped over exterior light fixtures and doorknobs. Windows were covered with thin plastic to protect from overspray as they painted our Masonite siding with a brand-new color.

We added haint blue, a southern tradition to protect a home from evil spirits, on the ceiling of our front porch and rear deck. It also helps give a cooler look in the summer. Trim was next so the covers came off the windows and doors. The brushes came out as several crew members set to work. Then they replaced the gutters and light fixtures, and I though the job was complete. Wrong. Mickey and his crew put back all the furniture and
even washed the outside of our nearly 30 windows. I’ve never known of a contractor who really cared about his work as much as Mickey and Red Letter Painting. So, in a nutshell, here’s what I suggest if you’re thinking about hiring a home-improvement contractor. Examples include: • Launching a program with 284 solar lights to increase nighttime boating safety • Creating public/private partners partnerships to remove nearly a dozen abandoned boats and derelict docks from the lake • Increasing the effectiveness of the association’s 30-year Shore Sweep lake clean-up to total more than 1,000 tons of trash, garbage and debris from the lake • Growing the group’s annual budget from $127,000 in 2010 to nearly $421,000 in 2017 • Raised awareness of boating safety through educational campaigns such as the 100-foot rule • Worked with the Georgia Legislature on multiple issues, such as passage of the Georgia Boat Registration law. Recognition Cloud and the association have
received numerous recognitions including the 2013 Organization of the Year, presented by RiversAlive; the 2015 Statewide Community Greening Award from Keep Georgia Beautiful; the 2016 Hall County Green Alliance Recognition’ and a Georgia House of Representatives Proclamation of Lake Lanier Day on February 12, 2018. In 2016, the association was awarded The Environmental Group of the Year by Gwinnett Clean and Beautiful. Cloud was presented that year with a Certificate of Appreciation from the Corps of Engineers by thenColony Jon Chytka, Mobile District Commander. Cloud began her new position with Marine Specialties Inc. in mid-May. “You know, if you’d asked me when I took the position at the Lake Lanier Association a decade ago, I never would have told you that this gig would have turned into what it has become,” Cloud said. “With the support of the board and our members, I’ve been able to create something to make things a little bit better on Lake Lanier.”

Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. All day use parks close daily at 10 p.m. Boat launching is allowed at all hours unless otherwise posted. Alcoholic beverages are prohibited in all parks. Picnic Shelters Picnic shelters are available at several Corps’ parks around the lake. They can be reserved for a fee. Call the Lake Lanier Management Office at 770-9459531. Day Use Fees Day use fees are charged at some park areas which have boat ramps or beach areas. Mark of the Potter celebrates 50 years in Lanier headwaters
By Jane Harrison At a special place in the northeastern headwaters of Lake Lanier, rushing water once turned a wheel to grind corn as moonshiners wheeled by on a narrow winding river road to escape the law. For the past 50 years, potters have thrown clay on wheels at this peaceful artists’ paradise and marked their creations with their initials. The Mark of the Potter, formerly the site of Grandpa Watts Mill on the Soque River in Habersham County, celebrated its halfcentury last month as a haven for potters and those who seek their wares. Many of the visitors, artists, and founders’ ancestors who mingled by the river returned full circle to muse about the past and make plans for the future of what’s hailed as the oldest craft shop in Georgia. Sharon Bucek, whose brother Jay operated the shop and potters’ studio for 30 years, led tours starting on the side porch above where the beautiful Soque sparkled on a hazy morning. History streams from the site, where the original 1920s era Hills Mill
was rebuilt during the Depression by Robert Watts and his father, Allen “Grandpa” Watts. “Wagons would come up to the door and it would open up for them to drop their corn,” Bucek said. “They socialized and caught up” at the center of community life, which was also one of the few businesses around. The mill operated until the mid-1960s when the Watts family shut it down after high water on the Soque destroyed the machinery. It sat abandoned until the late 1960s when John and Glendal LaRowe, an engineer and nurse from Atlanta, started life anew in the Georgia mountains. Glen, who was losing her vision due to Macular Degeneration, retired from nursing and put her hands on clay. The couple remodeled the upstairs of the old mill as their abode, set up a studio, and opened Mark of the Potter in 1969. They lived and worked there until 1985 and eventually moved into Lanier Village Estates in Gainesville. Glen died in 2008 at the age of 88. John was 94 when he passed away in 2014. spattered with corn husks and mill dust, now foots racks and tables holding faces hewn in clay, pitchers, mugs, platters and vases, all marked by the potter who made them. Original mill wheels have been reworked into display tables. Rusted turbines and conveyors adorn the walls. Downstairs, visitors can duck

able items “is not an easy way to make a living,” but that his designation as one of the six resident potters has sustained him and his art. “I’ve been here such a long time and have such a following I can’t imagine doing anything else,” he said. ter Ursula Vollrath on the shores of Lake Lanier in the 1970s. She now handles about 100 to 200 pounds of clay a day. Dean’s hands worked the mud to show visitors how to turn a lump of earth into a beautiful, functional vessel. The initial phase, centering the clay on the wheel “is harder than it looks,” she said. Although the clay they kneed and shape is not native (it’s shipped in from south Georgia suppliers), each potter mixes in their own recipe of ingredients to make it their own. They make glazes – brilliant blues, reds, greens, earthen tones – at the studio.
Two visitors from Valdosta were among those making annual pilgrimages to the shop last month. Betty and Augustine Martinez said they’ve been coming up since the late 1990s to see the river, fish and meet potters. On each visit, they add to their pottery collection. Dollie Barron Merritt recalls taking pots out of the kiln and greeting customers when the LaRowes opened shop. One of the craft shop’s first employees, she says the clay’s in her blood. “It’s in my DNA,” she said of the pull to come back monthly from her home in Greenville, S.C. She
plans to retire on family property near the Soque. The shop’s current owners, Mayte and Chad Peck, inherited it from the Bucek family in December 2018. “I’ve been coming here for at least 20 years,” said Chad, who’s well grounded in the legacy laid down. “We want to maintain the traditions and legacy of this iconic place” at the interface of family, art and nature, Mayte said. “People feel at home here.” The Pecks greeted dozens of long time customers, artists and family friends on the day they’d planned since before Christmas.
Chad said his goal “after this” involves creating electric energy with turbines, a modernized concept from the mill’s past. The building contractor with an eye for detail said he’s looking into potential grants to construct multiple turbines in the river to supply power to the whole facility, including the kilns and possibly a couple of rustic cabins. In the meantime, young potter Dalton Foret, a recent Savannah School of Art and Design graduate, is grateful to get his foot in the door working the cash register and helping out where he can. He first visited on family vacation six
years ago and felt the call of earth and water. “It’s my dream to work here. I aspire to be an in-house potter,” he said. Look for his abstract mark on fresh functional stoneware fashioned from hands in love with an old mill, a river, and an ancient craft.

While vacationing, give beach-nesting birds their space Kids Fishing Events teach basics
Georgia’s beaches are not only vacation hotspots, they’re top spots for nesting shorebirds and seabirds, and for migrating species fueling up for long flights to the Arctic. American oystercatchers, Wilson’s plovers and least terns use sites such as Little Tybee Island, Pelican Spit off Sea Island, Cumberland Island and the southern end of Jekyll Island. Among other species, black skimmer, royal tern and gull-billed tern also nest on beaches and offshore sandbars. When nesting, human disturbance is a significant threat for these birds, which also face risks from native predators and high spring tides. Pets can be destructive, too. Visitors to Georgia beaches can help beach-nesting birds and migrating species by: • Avoiding posted sites. • Walking below the high-tide line. • Watching birds from a distance. • Backing away from any nesting birds they accidentally disturb. Adults frightened from a nest will often call loudly and
exhibit distraction displays, such as dragging a wing as if it’s broken. Sometimes the birds will dive-bomb people who get too close to their nest, said wildlife biologist Tim Keyes of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources. Keyes also encouraged visitors to leave dogs at home or keep them on a leash when visiting a beach where dogs are allowed. Owners who let their dogs chase shorebirds can be fined for harassing federally protected species. There are several coastal areas where pets are excluded by regulation or law and owners can be cited for bringing a dog. These include the beachfront portion of Little Tybee Island, Pelican Spit, Satilla Marsh Island, and St. Catherines Island and Little Egg Island bars. (The bars, Pelican Spit and Brunswick Dredge Island, another key nesting site, also are closed to people.) Beach-nesting birds nest above the high-tide line on wide, terraced beach flats or in the edge of dunes. In Georgia, the birds lay eggs in shallow scrapes in the sand from mid-March through July. After hatching, chicks hide on the beach or in the grass. Dis-
turbance by people or pets can cause adult birds to abandon eggs and chicks, exposing them to extreme heat and predators. On a hot day, “in as little as 10 minutes the eggs can be cooked,” Keyes said. The threats are similar for migrating seabirds and shorebirds. The coast provides vital stopover sites for species such as federally threatened red knots flying from South America and the Arctic. Red knots flushed from feeding might not gain the weight needed to survive their more than 9,000-mile migration. A Beach Stewards program powered by volunteers helps monitor least terns nesting on St. Simons’ busy East Beach. Take a beach break in North Carolina’s Onslow County

Keene Fried shrimp for breakfast, dozens of whole sand dollars on the beach, wildlife and outdoor adventures, a strong sense of Americana and patriotism, the country’s longest-operating USO, and the largest U.S. Marine training base east of the Mississippi are just a few of the reasons to make a trip to eastern North Carolina, Jacksonville and Onslow County. A direct hit from last October’s Hurricane Florence devastated the area, so our scheduled trip there was postponed until last month. Three journalists, two from Atlanta and one from Daytona Beach, spent four days exploring all there is to do in this treasure trove of adventures, history and culture in this laid-back part of North Carolina. OnlyInOnslow Tourism manager Donna Hammonds knows this area well, not only because she has lived here for a good while, but also because her husband is a retired U.S. Marine Captain who trained recruits at Marine Corps Base Camp LeJeune, until he retired a couple of years ago. She made sure that we visited a balance of historic sites and memorials, great places to eat local seafood and specialties like fried fruit fritters, African-American heritage sites, parks, waterways
sunset cruises, team-building trips and wildlife tours on the New River. However, we visited their waterside home on the New River for a chance to learn about their love of the area and to tour their cruising yacht.
