By Pamela A. Keene Lake Lanier’s marinas and boat rental concessions have, for the most part, remained open and operating during Georgia’s shelter-at-home, social-distancing orders. But it’s not business as usual. Marinas, including Holiday and Sunrise Cove, Aqualand and Hideaway Bay have posted large signs urging people to maintain social distancing and not gather in groups. “We’re clearly enforcing social distancing throughout
the property,” said Alex Laidlaw, vice president with Westrec, which owns Holiday, Lazy Days at Holiday and Sunrise Cove. “We’ve hired off-duty police offers to assist on the weekends.” Most marinas’ fuel docks and pump-out stations are open as well, but staff are practicing social distancing and reminding visitors to do the same. Some, such as Gainesville Marina, are still operating their service departments. Boat sales are typically done by appointment.

Boat rentals and clubs Several of Lanier’s half-dozen boat-rental concessions have remained open under the social-distancing mandates. SunRise Sail, the umbrella organization for SunRise Sailing Club and SunRise Sailing Academy is not currently accepting new members, but current members are coming to use the boats as long as they have received the required instruction before the so-
cial-distancing mandate. “Our sailing school has been closed since March, but we are looking forward to phasing in our re-opening,” said Dan Kingery, owner of SunRise Sail. “Our members are coming out in groups of one to 2 for the most part and we’re completely sanitizing our boats between uses. “The lake really looks like the Fourth of July because of all the See Caution, page 22

By Pamela A. Keene Boaters of all kinds around the country will be commemorating National Safe Boating Week with various virtual and interactive activities. In Atlanta, America’s Boating Club Atlanta members have already begun promoting “Wear Your Life Jacket to Work Day,” which is slated to formally take place on Friday, May 15. It’s a precursor to the National Safe Boating Week from May 16-22. “America’s Boating Club Atlanta has been planning activities for several months, but when the shelter-at-home orders were issued, we looked for other ways to draw attention to boating safety,” said Dave Fuller, commander of ABCA, the 250-member boating organization that serves Lake Lanier, Allatoona Lake and north Georgia. “Our members are very committed to boating safety, and as part of our membership we all take the Basic Boating Safety Class.” Members have vowed to wear their life jackets to work, even if they’re working from home or running essential errands. “It’s a way to start the conversation about the importance of boating

The group is encouraging people to pick up trash and debris and submit photos that will be judged by the association for prizes. “With the exceptionally high water levels this winter and spring, the amount of debris on the shorelines has increased tremendously,” said Jennifer Flowers, executive director of the Lake Lanier Association. “Yet, as families look for safedistance alternatives to sitting at home, we created Social Distancing Spring Shore Sweep to achieve two goals: help clean up the shorelines of Lake Lanier and give families a chance to enjoy some time outdoors together while doing something with a purpose.” Although Georgia has been under a shelter-at-home order from Gov. Brian Kemp, the Georgia State Parks and other outdoor venues have remained open for hiking, walking and

safety,” Fuller said. “And we’re encouraging our own members to take photos of themselves wearing life jackets to promote boating and water safety, and to post them to our Facebook page.” Sponsored by the National Safe Boating Council, National Safe Boating Week has been celebrated for decades. Other national and regional organizations including the US Coast Guard, US Coast Guard Auxiliary, Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Army Corps of Engineers, support the program. “We believe wearing a life jacket is the simplest way to ensure the safety of you and your family while enjoying a day on

Marine canvas owners step up during COVID-19 By Pamela A. Keene In early April, several Lake Lanier canvas fabricators set out to make 10,000 face masks. Within three weeks, they’d not only hit their target, they exceeded it by 50 percent. “Thanks to the help of the community, we’ve been able to make more than 15,000 face masks, many of which have been sent across the country,” said Joni Johnstone, who owns Lakeside Marine Canvas with her husband Daymon. “It’s been an amazing response that has ended up not costing a penny because of the GoFundMe page.” The couple reached out to Craig’s Marine Canvas and Tammy the Cover Girl to collaborate. Lakeside Marine purchased 350 yards specialty fabric from Kimberly-Clark, developed a workable pattern, then using Lakeside’s digitized cutting table, cut thousands of masks. Most were assembled and sewed by Craig’s and Tammy’s businesses, along with members of the community who volunteered. “We even had a colleague in the business from Massachusetts who sent us 250 yards of fabric to
cut and ship back to him,” she said. “Some of the masks we’ve made have been sent to people in other states, including New York, Utah and Arizona and Michigan, places where people who are making them here have connections. We sent some to our son who is stationed in Hawaii. Many also were donated to local bus drivers, lunchroom workers, police and fire stations and nursing homes, and they’re making a difference.” Johnstone used the Lake Lanier Boaters Group Facebook page to get the word out, giving
regular updates about progress. Individuals and community groups, including Girl Scout troop 2665, have participated in the project. “Our goal was to make 10,000 masks, and as of April 20, we had made more than 15,000,” Johnstone said. “And we’ve raised enough money through GoFundMe to pay for the expenses, which came to just more than $5,150. I’d say this has been a successful initiative, and it couldn’t have been done without everyone in the community pitching in.”

LAKE LANIER OLYMPIC PARK Venue hopes to reopen in mid-May By Jane Harrison The plaza on the lake lies empty. Canoes and kayaks rest on racks. The rowers aren’t coming. There are no sunbathers on the sand. But, on sunny weekends, the boat ramp is packed. Lake Lanier Olympic Park, usually a destination for warm weather fun and activity, has suspended organized activities and banned beach use until at least May 13. LLOP Executive Director Robyn Lynch said city officials will evaluate potential venue reopening after May 13. That decision will depend on several factors, including state orders, Gainesville City Council direction, and input from local health officials, she said. Lynch reported that although the beach is closed, “the park, picnic areas and boat ramp are open.” The boat ramp, as were many remaining open on Lake Lanier, filled up in early April with boaters escaping their homes into the seeming vastness of the lake. Lynch said she had never seen so many trucks and boat trailers parked at the LLOP ramp on Clarks Bridge Road. LLOP’s closure canceled April’s Food Truck Friday, as well as several Lanier Canoe & Kayak Club activities. LCKC Dragon Boat Team camps and the Gainesville Hall Dragon Boat Challenge have been postponed, said LCKC spokesperson Jim O’Dell. He hopes to reschedule the dragon boat challenge to June 13 to run with another club event, Paddlemania. “If we are still in the throes of covid-19 or if we simply have more teams than we can handle, we will defer this event to Dragons at the Park, 10 Oct.,” he said via email. The Boy’s & Girls Clubs of Lanier’s Rubber Duck Derby, held annually at the park, has been converted to a “virtual” event. Ducks many be adopted at www.rubberduckderby.com. Join the club’s Facebook page on Saturday, May 16 at 2:30 p.m. to find out who won the prizes, including the $10,000 grand prize. Perhaps the greatest hit to LLOP and the local hospitality industry came when the American Collegiate Rowing Association announced it had canceled its national championship originally set for May 22-24.
The ACRA board announced March 30 there would be no 2020 national championship due to “continued significant progression of the COVID-19 situation, and with the vast majority of ACRA Programs shifting from ‘suspended’ to ‘canceled.’ ” “It was a huge blow not only to LLOP but because of the economic impact to this community,” said Lynch, who also serves as Gainesville’s tourism director. Hotels, motels and restaurants took a loss, as did the Lake Lanier Rowing Club, which gets annual fundraising boosts from two large regattas. The March John Hunter Regatta, which attracts thousands of Southeastern college and high school rowers, was one of the first LLOP cancellations. Lynch added that organizers of both regattas are “committed to coming back” next year. Another LLOP event set for later this month may be postponed or cancelled. The John Jarrard Foundation was considering rescheduling The Lake Show concert from May 30 to sometime later this summer or possibly cancelling it for the year. LCKC’s Moonlight Paddle and Kayak Day Camp remained on the calendar for June. Additionally, LLRC planned to start its

As spring dawned on LLOP and the debris from winter rains was cleared away, the lake park looked very inviting. “It looks really great,” Lynch said.

Sticking to your specialty; no questions asked In my opinion, nurses are some of the most competent and capable people around. They are right up close and personal with the patients so they can spot problems immediately and, in many cases, take steps to solve them. They also know when a problem is beyond their ability and are not afraid to call for help. I remember one rainy day in the springtime when my brother Haik and I were sitting around the marina office drinking coffee. We strung a couple dozen of these on a wire and stretched it tight as a banjo string catty corner across the bottom of the spring. Then we replaced the cloth cover and properly assembled the box spring and mattress. It looked perfect, but whenever someone walked across the floor of the bedroom you could hear a faint “jingle jingle jingle.” About this time the girls showed up, amazed that we had gotten everything back together and demanding to know how we had done it. We told them that we don’t ask them how they perform their miracles in the hospital, so
don’t ask us how we do it in the bedroom! Now the Jersey shore is pretty desolate in the off season and there’s not much to do for entertainment except sit around in bars and tell stories. The tale of the “Flying radiator, flexible box spring and the tintinnabulation of the bells in the haunted bedroom” was one of the better ones and kept the gang entertained for months! Mendes has been sailing all his life and on Lake Lanier for the past 25 years. His family owns a marina/bar/restaurant so he has plenty of real life experiences to draw from. Staying social and dining during COVID-19 at Lanier

From the fascinating to the remarkable, Lake Lanier harbors many personalities and places along its shores. Lakeside presents “Shore Lines” – stories about people who live, work and play around the lake and the places that make the area special. By Pamela A. Keene Even with the restrictions of COVID-19, Lake Lanier’s restaurants, social organizations and communities are making it a bit easier and safer for people to stay connected and make the most of the lake and warm spring weather. Many restaurants offer take out, the golf course at Lanier Islands is open for play, and membership groups are thinking of new ways to stay in touch. Almost as soon as social distancing was announced, University Yacht Club’s board of directors put technology to work. From upping its emails and texts to members to creating an online happy hour with music on Friday nights, the club has set a high bar that’s gotten very positive feedback from members. “In these challenging times, our members need their UYC family more than ever,” said UYC Commodore Lisa Wilson. “Although we are missing many of our traditional spring events, such as opening day and Easter egg hunts, we’ve found ways to bring everyone together to continue to feel connected.” The club’s Chef Rudy Kremer and his dining room staff are continuing regular meal service from the club’s full menus, all shifted to call ahead and take out. Orders are prepared and packaged, left in an outside area so that there is no human-to-human contact. The club is also selling unprepared cuts of meat for members to cook at home.
In late March, club volunteers taped the annual Easter Sunrise service for broadcast on Easter morning, complete with music, readings and an Easter message. The club’s staff made dozens of colorful Easter bags for members to use at home with their families. They included candy-filled eggs and other goodies. Using Constant Contact and email, the club sends regular messages and updates. Devotionals throughout the week bring inspirations messages. Friday evening happy hours on Zoom have brought in as many as 60 members to chat, enjoy a cocktail together and enjoy the musical talents of members. “UYC members have been physically distanced, but in no way are we socially apart,” Wilson said. “We’ve had to experiment and adapted to many different technology platforms; some have worked, others have not. We’re getting through the trial-and-error and our members certainly have expressed their appreciation in many ways. We all hope for a resolution to these times soon, as everyone is, but in the meantime, we’re doing everything we can to stay safely connected.” Support lake restaurants A number of lake restaurants are doing take out, either with call-ahead or curbside ordering. Many are offering streamlined menus or daily specials. Skogie’s at Gainesville Marina, 678 450-1310, is doing

take-out and dockside ordering on Fridays from 5 to 8 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. “We’re doing our brunch items from 10 to noon on Saturdays and Sundays, too,” said Tony Jonovitch, owner of Skogie’s. “People can come to our courtesy docks in the marina; we’re calling it dock-and-dine and it’s been very popular.” Smokey Q at Bald Ridge Marina, 770 910-4961, is doing take-out. Known for its pulled pork and chicken sandwiches, it also serves Philly cheesesteaks and pork and chicken tacos. Serving from its full menu, owners Rudy Connor and Judson Holder are open Tuesdays through Fridays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. “Our menu board is out front and people can call ahead or drop by. Just knock on the back door and we’ll take care of you.”
Twisted Oar at Holiday Marina, 770 715-9818, has been doing take-out seven days a week from 11:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. It’s offering its full menu plus daily specials. “Our goal is to help keep our employees as best we can,” said Cary Eubank, owner of Twisted Oar. Port Royale’s Pelican Pete’s plans to be open by late April for dockside take-out, Fridays through Sundays from noon to 8 p.m. “We have the largest number of courtesy docks, on the lake, so we’ll be providing take-out,” said Brian Grill, manager of Pelican Pete’s. “We’ll be using a limited menu to be super-fast, but we’ve also got some new menu items.” Fish Tales at Hideaway Bay, 770 967-3375, and Pig Tales at Aqualand, 678 828-7676, have been doing take-out and dock delivery during April on weekends. As of press time, owner Dale Ozaki had not set specific hours
for May. “We hope to be open and operational in our dining room with regular hours in May, but we don’t feel confident at this point to publish anything right now about May.” Lake recreation Lanier Islands has kept Legacy Golf Club open for golf. “Golf is a good sport for social distancing,” said Missy Burgess, director of public relations and marketing. “We know that people are trying to have some sense of normalcy so we’re also open for people to come out here and bike, hike and walk. Think of coming out to the islands as social distancing with a view.” The islands is not booking hotel rooms, but it is offering villas and lake-house stays. By Jane Harrison The lake is open. Come on in. But, if you’re in a group, don’t do anything to draw attention to yourself. Someone might snap a picture and zip it to law enforcement. Rangers will be dispatched. They really don’t want to have to come after you. That’s one of the messages officials with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers relayed in an April 9 webinar hosted by the Lake Lanier Association. The lake advocacy organization used the internet-based format to allow a few hundred
participants to listen to and question DNR Major Mike England and Corps Projects Manager Tim Rainey about how Georgia’s shelter in place order impacted those who boat, fish, sunbathe and recreate around Lake Lanier. “The response was overwhelming,” said LLA President John Barker. Within hours after LLA emailed members about the webinar, it filled up with participants wanting to know how measures to halt the spread of coronavirus would affect lake outings. Ga. Gov. Brian Kemp’s order was set to expire April 30. Some busi-
nesses could reopen before then. But, as England reported, from its beginning April 3, the governor made exceptions for outdoor recreation. “It does allow you to go out in a boat, to go fishing and hiking” and more, he said. Other messages from the hourlong webinar included: Marinas could open. Dock builders could hammer away. Lake restaurants could serve take-out orders. The 10-person limit also applied to private docks. Fishing guides could help anglers cast from their boats. But England emphasized the main point: “We encourage See Shore Lines, page 19

• Shore Lines Continued from Page 18 folks to stay away from others … try not to congregate.” “The state of Georgia is not closing any boat ramps,” England said, nor did it close any state parks. But, he noted, the state doesn’t own every ramp or park. Some, operated by the Corps, cities, counties, and private entities, were closed. “The governor’s order did not impact our operation … we had already done it” several weeks prior, Corps official Rainey said. All the park restrooms closed, as did some parks and Corps offices; but 24 day use parks remained opened as of April 22. “You can use them, but we’re not encouraging visitors,” Rainey added. England urged lake goers to abide by social distancing guidelines that no more than 10 people
assemble and that non-family members stay 6 feet apart. He said raft-ups are OK, but recommended boaters rope up six feet away from each other. “Don’t tie up boats to make it look like it’s a big party going on,” he said. Same for mooring on islands. It’s fine for folks to pack a picnic and escape on one of Lanier’s scattered islands, but don’t make a scene. “Someone will take a photo and send a complaint (to DNR) and we’ll have to come out and count,” England said. DNR rangers and city/county lake patrols are still out there, he added, but their mission is complaint driven. “There have been a lot of ghost complaints,” he said, including photos showing throngs of people on islands or lines of

cars at parks that were actually taken long before Georgia’s shelter order began. When they got the photos, DNR sent rangers out to investigate. “Nope … there’s no one here. People are making this stuff up trying to get the lake or a park closed,” England said. “There have been a lot of false alarms, false calls.” When rangers found groups not abiding by social distancing guidelines, they separated without incident, he reported. The day to day job of rangers in the six DNR boats patrolling Lake Lanier is “not normal,” England said. Rangers were not stopping and checking safety equipment and registrations to avoid risk of close contact with boaters. But, officers “are still out there on normal patrols” and will write tickets “only for folks who are really asking us to by acting up and cutting up.” That includes recklessness, excessive speed and improper lighting. He also said DNR partnered with the Georgia State Patrol to monitor parking lots at parks and boat ramps. Vehicles parked in the road or blocking gates would be hauled off.
He mentioned that the governor knows just how many people are at parks and on beaches at Georgia State Parks, including Don Carter on Lake Lanier. Indeed, the afternoon after Georgia went under the shelter in place order, two DNR officers stood at the pavilion overlooking the park beach and a helicopter hovered first over the beach and then above the RV campground. “Staff will turn people away once (a park or beach) reaches capacity,” England said. “Georgia’s order did not impact our operation. We had already done it,” said Rainey of federal oversight of Corps operation on Lanier. “We started planning really early with guidance from our headquarters.” Parks not already open for the season stayed closed. All restrooms closed. The Corps office closed and staff began teleworking. Site visits and inspections on dock permits ceased. But some operations continued. The maintenance contractor still picked up trash on the shoreline. Picnickers could still dine at lakeside tables. “We will respond as needed” to complaints about
unpermitted shoreline activity, Rainey said, such as reports of trees being cut on Corps property. The webinar was organized by LLA Executive Director Jennifer Flowers, assisted by membership chair Kelly Marlow, each of whom fielded questions participants emailed in advance or typed during the webinar. One questioner asked about potential transmission of the coronavirus through sand, water or organic material. Say goodbye to stormy April April certainly lived up to its expectations of being the peak of our severe storm season. The Wednesday before Easter, I was in Severe Weather Center 2 and my colleague, meteorologist Brad Nitz and I (Brad is working from home) had the same reaction when we saw the afternoon model run data for the upcoming Easter weekend. We both texted each other about the same time, with the same reaction. OMG! The severe storm parameters were off the chart. The wind shear being predicted was in the ridiculous mode. It looked like what we saw back in 2011, maybe even a little worse. We alerted the news department that we would need all hands on deck, as this would likely be the “big one” of the season. Friday before Easter nothing had changed with the models. It was going to be an epic severe storm outbreak from Texas to North Carolina. We had been alerting our viewers since Wednesday and they were craving new information. Is my county included? How bad would it be? Where would tornadoes be more likely? All great questions we would not know the final answer to until Easter morning. The one thing we knew for sure was the timing. On Holy Saturday, all the models were
in agreement. The storm system with all its fury would be coming in Glenn Easter night and continBurns uing overnight into Monday morning. This is a worst case scenario. Lanier The storms are violent Outlook and scary. It’s in the middle of the night. Moms and dads would be huddled in basements or hallways and bathrooms. The darkness and hour adding to the horror and confusion of horrific wind and rain. And then the storms began. The first tornado warning came around 8 p.m. Easter night. It was for Chatooga County in northwest Georgia. These were going to be long-track tornadoes. We began tracking it on radar, warning people in the path as it moved around 50 mph to the northeast, toward Murray and Whitfield counties. It was a bad one. As it turned out, the EF 2 carved out a path of destruction from Chatooga to Murray counties and five people lost their lives. Another man in Barrow County would lose his life when a tree fell on his house and crushed him. By the time it was all said the done, we had 22 tornadoes in Georgia. The strongest was the EF 3 with winds estimated at 165 mph. We were looking at the wind velocities on radar as we were tracking it. We could not believe it’s size.

boaters,” Kingery said. “I guess people feel isolated enough when they’re out on the water.” At Gainesville Marina, staff is limiting the number of people on the rental dock at the same time. “We’re allowing a maximum of six people, all living in the same household, to rent and we are staggering the boat departure and arrival times,” said Philip Burton, general manager at Gainesville Marina. “Depending on what happens in May, some of our processes may be more relaxed.” Port Royale is continuing its boat rentals within the guidelines,
limiting the number of people on each boat and scheduling rental appointments only by phone. They’re scheduling a maximum of two rentals per hours. Carefree Boat Club, a members-only boat club, has been busy with rentals. “We’ve been packed for members using our tritoons, bowriders, surf boats and fishing boats,” said David Rothwell, owner of the organization that’s based at Lazy Days. “Groups of less than 10, immediate family, are coming out to enjoy the lake, and we’re seeing a lot of first-time boaters.” Rothwell, like other rental out-
lets, said that each boat is thoroughly sanitized and cleaned between rentals. “We’re always accepting new members, so we hope people will come out and give us a try.” Nautical Boat Club, located at Lanier Islands’ Harbor Landing, offers pontoons, wake boats and ski boats. “We’ve been very busy,” said Tim Kiser, owner of the club. “People have heard that it’s a good thing to be outside. Every day has been like a weekend for us.” Before you decide to rent a boat on Lanier, call ahead to check availability and guidelines.

Continued from Page 20 would not know the full extent of the damage until the next morning. When I got up and turned on the news, there was a reporter standing in front of a house that was in the middle of the street. He was in Upson County. That tornado had ripped the house from its foun-
dation, hurled it into the air, and laid it down in the road, mostly intact! I’ve never seen anything like it. It then had to be torn down. There was no one in the house at the time and I could not believe there was not a single person hurt from that tornado! In case you are wondering, the most tornadoes in a single day

Florida blasts judge’s water lawsuit report By Jane Harrison Florida attorneys ripped a special master’s report that put Georgia on the winning end of a seven-year water battle. In its April 13 reply to Special Master Paul J. Kelly’s Supreme Court recommendations, Florida blasted the court official for hearing no witnesses, taking no new evidence, and denying statements from a former special master’s nearly four-year reign. Kelly recommended the Supreme Court drop the lawsuit in his Dec. 11 report which stated that he believed evidence that Georgia’s water use is reasonable and downstream woes in Florida were caused by drought and mismanagement rather than Georgia’s consumption. He also concurred with Georgia’s argument that the cost of cutting water use and imposing more conservation measures in its larger economy would outweigh any potential benefits downstream in the smaller communities on the Apalachicola. The states’ skirmish over water in the Apalachicola-Chattahoochee-Flint river system started after a 2012 drought during which low freshwater flow on the Apalachicola River allowed excess ocean water to intrude into oyster fisheries on the Panhandle. Florida blamed Georgia’s upstream taps on the Flint and Chattahoochee rivers for collapse of the oyster industry and ecological
damage along the Apalachicola. The 2013 lawsuit accuses Georgia of overconsumption and asks the court to equitably allocate water between the states. Initially, lawsuit followers feared Lake Lanier, the largest reservoir on the ACF and a major Georgia water supplier, might be impacted; however, Florida instead targeted Georgia agricultural irrigation on the Flint. The state’s farmers use more water than all other Georgia water consumers combined. In the April reply, Florida argues that Kelly’s “single hourand-a-half hearing” with the states should not flip the first special master’s “core conclusions” following lengthy discovery and a five-week trial. “Special Master Ralph Lancaster placed great weight on live testimony and generally refused to consider testimony from anyone who did not appear and subject themselves to cross examination. During key junctures at trial, he frequently questioned witnesses himself,” Florida attorneys said. Lancaster concluded that Florida had suffered harm and that Georgia’s consumption was irresponsible; but he recommended the Supreme Court dismiss the case because the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers controls the flow through federal dams on the rivers. Thus, he reasoned, court action could not guarantee
relief on the Apalachicola. The court remanded Lancaster’s report. He retired from the case and died a few months later. Kelly got the nod in Aug. 2018. Florida accuses Kelly of improperly throwing out Lancaster’s conclusions about harm and inequitable conduct and dismissing evidence “including the admissions of Georgia’s own officials that their consumption was dangerously depleting flows, and the testimony of those who witnessed the decimation of the oyster fisheries firsthand.” Furthermore, it says Kelly “disregarded Florida’s equal right to the reasonable use of the waters at issue – granting Georgia carte blanche to use much as it wants.” Florida attorneys, led by Gregory G. Garre, a former U.S. Solicitor General who has argued in 44 Supreme Court cases, claim the case culminates “decades of effort by Florida to save the Apalachicola.” He argues that Kelly’s report denies Florida the right to “just and equitable apportionment” of a shared resource under the Constitution. Georgia has until June 12 to reply to Florida’s arguments. Another round of sur-replies are due a month later. The case could potentially appear on the court’s October calendar. Both states have spent in excess of $40 million in litigation costs.

Let’s begin with a maxim that has perception regarding your vessel but in fact is much more profound. “Whatever floats your boat,” was believed to be first used in the mid 1900s; actually referring to making a personal decision about a certain subject or task. It also basically implied indifference which also has a direct reference to boating safety, or the lack thereof. Old Federal Campground closed for repairs By Pamela A. Keene Due to heavy erosion from extremely high water levels in Lake Lanier of the past several years, the Corps of Engineers has temporarily closed Old Federal Campground. “The erosion is severe enough that it has become a safety issue,” said Tim Rainey, operations project manager at Lake Lanier. “We considered closing Old Federal in 2019 because of the damage at that time, but decided to wait another year. Now, we’re at the point that we don’t have much of a choice. “With multiple high-water and nearflood lake levels over the past 18 months, the damage further progressed,” he said. “The lake is still above full pool (as of the end of April), and until the water levels go back down, we won’t be able to fully assess the extent of the damage.” Old Federal Campground at Lake Lanier and other parks at the lake were scheduled to open in late March. However, with the safety challenges of COVID-19, openings have been delayed until at least May 18. “The delay from COVID-19 allowed us the opportunity to fully coordinate the closing of Old Federal with the Mobile District,” Rainey said. “That also includes cancelling the more than 800 reservations for this year at the campground and beginning to process refunds.”

Workouts move outdoors and online during social distancing By Jane Harrison With gyms closed, indoor fitness classes canceled, and team practices called off, some fitness buffs and athletes are finding new venues to keep in shape while social distancing. With outdoor workouts, Zoom training sessions, and online wellness checks, fitness instructors aim to help their clients maintain or improve their strength and endurance. “I’m taking them outdoors and training them,” said Ryan Kirby, who unloads sets of dumbbells at the North Hall Community Center track several times a week. The veteran personal trainer puts his followers through rigorous workouts under the blazing sun, against the wind, or beneath the clouds. One evening last month, he led three North Hall High School football players in power cleans, sprints, and agility moves, then sweated it out in runs and lunges on the infield with an adult bootcamp class. Rising North Hall senior running back Clark Howell lamented that the Trojans could not practice as a team. “We’re not all together,” he said. He looked to the workouts with Kirby and weightlifting at a teammate’s
house to prep for the fall season. A participant in Kirby’s bootcamp remarked she missed her gym, especially the leg press machine. But, a few minutes later, her legs likely burned with multiple sets of walking lunges and 40yard runs. Kirby said that although he “personally thinks it’s safe” to workout in the fresh air, he’s mindful of keeping safe distances. “If you’re running, it’s better to be side by side than running behind someone” where exhaled aerosol in breath might spread to someone drafting behind. He also will split classes into groups of three, stationed at different spots
along the track, and shuttle between them to supervise their exercise. Mandy Smith, owner of Fit Body Boot Camp in Flowery Branch and Braselton, has loaned weights to clients to lift during live Zoom workouts. The video and audio internet platform allows class members to view and hear instructors online and lets instructors keep an eye on clients’ form. Plus, Fit Body offers live Facebook training. “The trainer really pushes during the session, working (class members) super hard,” Smith said. “These are hard times and it’s super challenging to get moti-

vated” to exercise, especially when the usual camaraderie is not possible, Smith added. She said when the pollen settles, she might have clients grab their own yoga mats and weights and head out to the Limestone parking lot. “I know people are still running and biking and trying to stay active,” she said. “I’m missing my clients.”
Teaching infants and toddlers to be safe around the water By Pamela A. Keene May is Water Safety Month to raise awareness about safe practices around the water. In 2019, drowning was the leading cause of death in children ages infant to 4 years old, other than birth defects, according to the website StopDrowningNow.org. The American Red Cross reports that children younger than age 5 have the highest rates of drowning; many of these deaths occur in home pools or hot tubs. Two moms from Gwinnett have taken these statistics seriously. In 2007 Cindy Sachse and Christy Williams began teaching infants and toddlers how to swim in a backyard pool. “Most people don’t know that babies will naturally float on their own, and that introducing them to water at an early age will help them develop the skills to survive in a pool or other body of water,” said Sachse, who with Williams recently opened Gwinnett Swim on Lanier Islands Parkway. “It is really making a difference for families.” Gwinnett Swim’s main mission is working with infants and toddlers, but they work with all ages. It also has changing rooms and bathrooms, including a family changing room. “All Aquatic Survival Instruction (ASI) is one-on-one, and our upper level classes are semi-private and small groups” Williams said. “We’ve developed our program through our own experiences and all of our instructors are CPR- and AED-certified.” Williams has a Bachelor of Science degree in education and a background working with children, which helped the women develop their curriculum.
The pair met in the mid-2000s, when Williams searched out a private instructor for her 6-monthold son. She connected with Sachse. “We just started talking about how important it is to teach infants and toddlers about water safety,” Sachse said. “Drowning can be prevented, and we’re all about giving children the tools to get out of a difficult situation in the water and how to problemsolve. It’s not just a ‘summer activity,’ it's a life skill,” Williams said. In addition to infant and toddler private lessons, Gwinnett Swim teaches adult swim lessons

Gardening: Good for the soul in tough times
If the lines over the past two months at box retailers like Home Depot and Lowe’s are any indication, everyone’s a gardener these days. During the shelter-in-place and social distancing orders, people still found safe ways to be outdoors and stay active. As people long to get outside but still stay home, they’re turning to home-improvement projects. Gardening has topped the list, whether they’re growing vegetables or putting in trees, shrubs and flower gardens. This global crisis has come as the weather turns milder and spring already means that more people are outdoors. But instead of gathering with friends or traveling, they’re looking to their own landscapes for a safe and productive way to have some sort of activity. An explanation of refreshing, piney India Pale Ales It’s mid-April, the air is green with pollen and everything is in bloom. I’m dreaming of refreshing, piney IPAs, yet the evenings are still a little cool for my dreams to come true. So while I drink a Founders Curmudgeon’s Better Half old ale, lets talk IPAs and dream of summer on the lake or grilling in the backyard with friends. To me, there’s nothing more refreshing than an IPA but I’m getting ahead of myself. Your monthly history lesson: IPAs or India Pale Ales were developed in the 1800s to successfully endure long sea voyages and quench the thirst of those in far off countries, purportedly British troops, but non-military buyers lined up as well. A large amount was shipped to India, via hogshead casks, hence the export version of pale ale was named India Pale Ale. IPAs were more heavily hopped than other beers and this helped keep their taste well preserved for the journey. The age of refrigeration was ushered in and IPAs lost favor. Fast forward to 1976, the craft beer age was starting and IPAs regained favor. These days they are quite the sensation with the many different styles and sub categories.

Beer is measured by several standards with one being IBU (International Bitterness Units). It is a self-explanatory measurement, ostensibly to let people know how bitter a beer may be. However it shouldn’t be used by itself as other factors may mask the perceived bitterness. A high IBU may have a maltier profile that would mask bitterness. My advice: Ask for a taste if you think a high IBU may be out of your range. Other measures of beer are the original and final gravity measurements. Typically when we refer to high gravity beers we are referring to the measurements taken during the brewing process. Original gravity (OG) measurements calculate the fermentable and unfermentable substances in the wort before the fermentation process. This simple test gives us
the potential alcohol level when the process is finished. When we are ready to bottle, we test it again to determine Final Gravity (FG) to see how our theory proved out, it’s usually pretty accurate. IPAs are generally considered high gravity beers. They can vary in ABV from 5%-20%-plus when you look at session beers versus a Dogfish Head 120 minute IPA (which could understandably be confused with a barley wine). You won’t find this beer in Georgia due to its high alcohol content but if you ever have a chance to try it, split it with a good friend. There are many different IPAs and now we also have sub-IPAs. They run the gamut from irresponsibly hopped to general public, with an easy drinking hop level. At least that’s how I describe IPAs to my husband. He prefers a more thoughtful beer drinking experience and I am a self-described hophead. I love it when a brewery pushes the limit on their hops, but neither of us wants to be hit in the head with a grapefruit when sipping. Arguably there are 9 different IPA styles and then you have substyles and strength styles. I say
arguably as categorizing them will most certainly cause arguments. • Belgian – made using Belgian yeast, typically on the low side of alcohol percentage, then hopped up. This is more of a hybrid beer taking its cues from standard Belgian golden ales and American IPAs • Black – dark roasted malts give this beer a dark look and a smooth creamy taste with only a mild bitterness • English – hoppy golden ales using only British grown hops • Grapefruit – the peel is often used in the boil in addition to Mosaic hops. Juice is added later to give this style a very fruit forward taste • Imperial/Double – stronger version of the American IPA, high hop flavor and bitterness but not harsh. This is for experienced IPA drinkers! • New England – also known as hazy IPA, this beer has a mild, smooth mouthfeel and is an entry level beer for those sticking a toe into the scary world of IPAs • Session – lower in alcohol than most IPAs (3%-5%) while still retaining a decent hop taste • Triple – if you’re looking for
something irresponsibly hopped, go find a triple. This beer style has triple the amount of hops and more malt to even out the resulting bitterness and give it more balance • West Coast – English & British hops give this type of IPA a big citrus hit that mellows into a bitter piney finish. Then you have variations on how a beer is hopped: • Dry Hopped – adding dry hops to the wort after it has cooled to increase the hoppy taste. Double Dry hopped, also known as an Imperial IPA, uses double or triple the amount of hops and they are added at different times during fermentation depending on what you’re looking for in terms of bitterness, taste and aroma. Wet, or fresh, hopped beers have fresh, non kiln-dried hops added to the wort for a more intense taste. Fruit hopped beers have fruit purée added during the brew process. Home lighting types and trends that add style and function One of the most important aspects of interior design, in my opinion, is lighting. Lighting can set the tone, both literally and figuratively, for a room. Lighting can add style and function to your space. There are three main categories of lighting when it comes to home design: ambient, task, and accent lighting. Ambient lighting refers to soft, natural lighting that allows you to see in a room but is not quite enough for tasks that require extra focus or precision. Ambient lighting is also known as “mood lighting.” Task lighting is more focused, bright lighting that is used in areas where more attention is required, like a kitchen. Accent lighting is used in a space to help illuminate corners or otherwise shadowed areas or accent specific features in a home; because it doesn’t offer a lot of natural or task lighting, accent lighting can also sometimes be used purely for design or decoration. Day Use Parks The Corps operates 35 day use parks at Lake Lanier. Facilities range from parks with boat ramps to those with designated swimming areas, picnic tables, shelters and playgrounds. A staycation spring can be fabulous at Lanier Even a deadly virus can’t stop the beauty of the spring season and rebirth in the natural paradise here at Lake Lanier. Though most everything is closed, partially closed, or suspended, the majority of boat ramps are still open for those who possess or have access to any kind of watercraft! Also, for the first time in several years, the lake is completely full and we are experiencing a “normal” spring. The warmth of the sun has been felt lately and we have experienced some delightful days, so despite this period of “doom and gloom,” Mother Nature has begun to wave her magic wand, and the Earth and waters are coming alive. From having fished this lake for more than 40 years as a fishing guide, my experience tells me that this could be one of the best fishing and wildlife springs we’ve seen in many years. Things have changed this spring at Lanier as to the way we are catching bass during the spawning period. In fact, as the surface temperature of the water crept up, I discovered a new twist on an old method to catch plenty of spotted bass with a lure that was modified for better action. We have been accomplishing this by utilizing Swirleybirds in 1/8th ounce sizes that have been updated by Veterans Fishing Lures (www.georgiafishing.com). These lures have enough weight to take the lure to the desired depth with enough flash to attract bass and other species. The lake has become alive with the sounds and sightings of birds and wildlife that magically appear in every direction. This spring is becoming a special time to enjoy the abundant bird populations and diverse flora and fauna!

We first saw the tiny buds appear on the very tips of tree limbs, then bird songs became more prevalent and now animals are being seen during their mating rituals along the forested red clay banks of the lake. The shorelines have exploded with colors from the dogwoods, mountain laurel, rhododendron and wild azaleas. The return of bald eagles to Lanier has been exciting, and now they seem to be showing up more frequently on the main parts of the lake. Ospreys are also relative newcomers to the area around the lake, but these birds of prey have become more prevalent in this part of Georgia since the stocking rates of striped bass were increased. Because ospreys are normally larger than hawks or falcons and have a white head, they are often mistaken for the bald eagle. Upon closer inspection, one can easily see that the osprey has a dark band across its face and a smaller, less colorful beak than his more well-known relative and even more obvious is the osprey’s white breast feathers. Bald eagles are quite dark underneath. Throughout the spring one can see and hear the most unique bird that has ever graced the waters of Lake Lanier ... the common loon. Loons are divers that are 24 to 40 inches in length and have an elon-

gated body and sharp, pointed bill. They are strong swimmers that propel themselves when diving by using their radically webbed feet. Their legs are attached far back on their bodies, a characteristic that permits ease of movement when swimming but causes great difficulty when attempting to walk on land. Loons are unique among living birds because their legs are encased within the body all the way to the ankle. They can easily swim faster than most fish. Loons are also good fliers, often reaching speeds of 60 miles per hour in the air but requiring an extensive run along the top of the water to become airborne. As always, it will be a sad morning when I go out on Lake Lanier and don’t hear that high-pitched, lonely song of the loon that has warmed my heart throughout this past winter and spring. Despite the terrible virus of
this spring, the always spectacular scenery at Lanier, the surprising wildlife encounters, and the great fishing offers nature’s classroom as a “staycation” to all of us. An abundance of picturesque flora and active fauna are a major part of a continuously changing kalei-
doscope of natural splendor at Lake Lanier! Bill Vanderford has won numerous awards for his writing and photography, and has been inducted into the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame as a Legendary Guide.

Corps opens public comment period for revising firearms possession on its land By Pamela A. Keene The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks public comments on its proposed revisions to regulations governing possession and transportation of firearms at Corps-managed Water Resources Development Projects across the nation, including Laker Lanier. The proposed revision to Title 36 of the Code of Federal Regulations seeks to align the Corps’ regulations with other federal land management agencies, as well as current state and local laws. Comments will be accepted through June 12, 2020. “The (proposed) revision will also eliminate the requirement for individuals to obtain written permission from a District Commander to carry a firearm on USACE-managed lands and waters,” according to the news release issued by the Corps from its headquarters in Washington, D.C. “Since the last amendment of this regulation in 2000, many states have passed laws or amended existing laws to provide for the carrying of firearms by private individuals, in particular for selfdefense purposes.”

DNR postpones youth birding competition Out of safety concerns regarding the coronavirus, Georgia’s 15th annual Youth Birding Competition has been postponed until Aug. 29-30. The popular birdathon involves teams of youth from kindergarten to high school seniors counting bird species statewide, then enjoying an awards banquet at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center near Mansfield. In other event changes announced by the state Department of Natural Resources, the registration deadline has been moved to July 31 and students who complete their senior year in high school this spring or summer will remain eligible to take part in the competition. In early summer, organizers will reassess event plans according to the latest guidelines involving COVID-19, the disease caused by the new coronavirus. Winners of the T-shirt Art Contest, a separate component of the Youth Birding Competition, have been announced. A peregrine falcon by Alston Li, an eighth-grader in Duluth,
landed the grand prize among a record 375 entries. Li’s artwork will be featured on this year’s event T-shirts. Photographs of all art entries will be displayed online and division winners honored during the awards banquet Aug. 30 at Charlie Elliott Wildlife Center. The Youth Birding Competition and T-shirt Art Contest are sponsored by DNR’s Wildlife Conservation Section, The Environmental Resources Network Inc. or TERN – friends group of the Wildlife Conservation Section – and others including Georgia Ornithological Society and the Atlanta and Albany Audubon societies.
